This is a stupid question, but I'll go ahead and ask it anyway. What happens
when you to export to PDF? Is there any particular reason you need a DVI file?
(It's an old format and not very well supported. PDF is a much better
alternative.)

t was that Lyx still didn't work. I already had Python installed on
the PC when I performed the installation. I wonder if that makes any
difference?
I'd be grateful for some help as I am very keen to try out Lyx and I am very
disppointed that I can't seem to get over this first hurdle.

The LyX UserGuide doesn't explain the "Options: Do Translations"

Is it possible for me to change something in Lyx so that the latter
format is default since I use this format the most? (I can then use
\citet{smith} for the former when needed)

This is where I get to- trying to set up my preferences here. Trouble
is I'm not sure of the arguments required to convert from

the list and then click back on "ear" to get it to be placed into the

And so on with the next wrong word etc.
Sorry for lengthy route - Its far easier and quicker to see this
happening in Lyx than to try and describe it.
Can anyone else confirm this?

Hi Lukas;
I've just made these into a .bib file, see attached. For me using Qt Lyx

Sorry that does not fix things for you.

Even this though has not resolved the problem for me. Now I just use
.eps images throughout and put up with not viewing them in the lyx gui
but rely on viewing them in the DVI preview instead.

it will allow me to modernize. (I don't actually have to do much

Being able to work from within LyX, in a manner very similar to the way

that it's all open is even better.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you're going to go the customization route, this might be of help:

It talks about creating a custom layout for an existing document class.

The child is being worked on and updated elswhere.
The only way I can get the master, foo.pdf,
