Thanks, Gigi, that's a great tip. So I guess command-v pastes the formula and
command-shift-v pastes the result of the formula? That's good to remember.

Re: Accessible and Automated OCR Workflow

2014-03-16 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi Keith,

Three more questions.

1. What do the following lines do? Do they test whether the file is a
text-based or image-based pdf? Do I need to customise any of that stuff (e.g.
the MyFile thing), or do I simply copy and paste it as is?
set myFile to POSIX path of theFile
set theResult to do shell script grep -i 'encoding' quoted form of myFile
  /dev/null  echo 1 || echo 0
if theResult is 0 then

2. Do I need to have those .wav files for it's done etcetera for those alert
sounds to work? I guess I can just change that path name to point to one of the
system files and it should work? Or I could just remove that line entirely?

3. Do I need to enter the version number for PDFPen?

Cheers,
Nic

Re: Resizing objects in the latest version of Keynote

2014-03-16 Thread Daniela Rubio
Hello Chris:
The results are the same, but the logistics are different. On the new Keynote,
you have a formatter tool, and you can change those parameters if, on the
slide, you select the text box, and then you go to that formatter. This new
keynote is kind of smart, and it gives you the possibilities regarding the kind
of content selected on the slide.
If you upgrade and need some help, just let me know. I find this new keynote
just great and work much better than in the old version.

Re: system dialogues displayed

2014-03-16 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Sometimes you'll hear that announcement when a third party app like Adobe
Reader has an update ready. Things like Adobe Reader and Flash have their own
updaters that run in the background and when an update comes available, it is
announced like this. Try the Application chooser (VO-f1-f1) or the Window
Chooser (VO-f2-f2) to see if either brings up the offending System dialog.
Usually, it is the Application chooser for these.

Re: Apple Script saving .aiff file

2014-03-16 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
Tracy,

Just in case you did not find the say command instructions from the Standard
Editions dictionary, here they are.

und to play
say v : Speak the given text
say text : the text to speak, which can include intonation characters
[displaying text] : the text to display in the feedback window (if different).
Ignored unless Speech Recognition is on.
[using text] : the voice to speak with. (Default is the system voice.)
[speaking rate number] : the rate of speech in words per minute. Average human
speech occurs at a rate of 180 to 220 words per minute. (Default depends on the
voice used. If “using” is not given, the system speaking rate is the default.)
[pitch number] : the base pitch frequency, a real number from 0 to 127. Values
correspond to MIDI note values, where 60 is equal to middle C. Typical pitches
range from around 30 to 40 for a low-pitched male voice to perhaps 55 to 65 for
a high-pitched child’s voice.
[modulation number] : the pitch modulation, a real number from 0 to 127. A
value of 0 corresponds to a monotone in which all speech is at the base speech
pitch. Given a pitch value of 46, a modulation of 2 means the widest range of
pitches would be 44 to 48.
[volume number] : the volume, a real number from 0 to 1 (default is the system
volume).
[stopping current speech boolean] : stop any current speech before starting
(default is false). When false, “say” waits for previous speech commands to
complete before beginning to speak.
[waiting until completion boolean] : wait for speech to complete before
returning (default is true).
[saving to any] : the alias, file reference or path string of an AIFF file
(existing or not) to contain the sound output.
When “saving to” or voice-modifying parameters other than “using” are given,
text is not displayed in the Speech Recognition feedback window, as it is not
used to produce the speech in that case.
Best wishes,

Jonathan

tagging people in Facebook

OK so I've been told that if you put the # symbol before a name in an FB post,
that will tag the person. For some reason it only adds a link to the first

Also, when I use the Tag people in your posts feature, it doesn't tag them but
says I'm with them.

What am I doing wrong? :)

Using Safari and Mavericks on the FB Mobile site. Otherwise I love the

I was under the impression that the at sign was what you needed to use. Using
jaws for Windows, if you type of person's name, you should see a list box of
suggestions. Pressing enter on that will tag the person. This doesn't seem to
be at all reliable, and I don't find other screen readers able to do this on
windows. It seems I tried it with voiceover on the Mac, and wasn't successful,
but I could be wrong about that.

Re: Calendar in iOS

2014-03-16 Thread David Chittenden
Actually, the list button does work. Its function has changed from iOS 7.0.

When in the month view, list button now activates the month list view from iOS
6 calendar. In other words, with list button activated, double-tapping a date
selects it rather than opening it, and the appointments appear in a list below
the month view. I prefer this method because it permits me to quickly go
through a day and schedule new appointments for my patients at the end of each
session. I, therefore, am very glad Apple has placed this functionality back
into the calendar month view.

Re: disk aid

2014-03-16 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn

Best wishes,

Jonathan
OK, you should be able to get drag and drop to work also as long as both
positions are visible on the primary screen at the same time. The best way to
do this in Mavericks is to use the tabs.

1. Open up the applications folder.
2. Click command-T to create a second tab.
3. Navigate to the source object.
4. Initiate the drag.
5. Move OV to the Tab bar of the applications tab
6. Initiate the drop action.

On a related note: Has any body tried using the VO command to drop item on a
hot spot?

Give it a shot and let us know if you were successful in getting it to emboss.

Can I merge multiple HTML files into one file.

2014-03-16 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi.

I need to merge a lot of HTML files into one file. Can anyone tell me how I can
do it. I found a tool on the internet but a rather expensive tool for that in
my opinion, but if there is no other way to go, I may buy it.

Thank you an advance.

Best regards Annie.

Re: Can I merge multiple HTML files into one file.

2014-03-16 Thread Geoff Stephens
Annie -
I wouldn't buy a tool to do that. But it may depend on how many files you
mean. You can open the files in an editor and just concatenate them by saving
the entire file. A lot of modern word processors will open HTML files and you
can simply open multiple files and then save them as a single file.

It is also possible to approach this from other angles depending on your goals.
I don't know much regarding how to go about handling something like this with
the Mac but used to deal with it in Windows.

Nevertheless, this is a pretty simple thing, and I wouldn't think it would be
necessary to spend any money to accomplish it. Maybe it would be good to know
more about what you need to do.

Re: accessible thesaurus

2014-03-16 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Quite right Jim. Here's how I did it.

1. Open the widgit bar menu from F12.

2. Select dictionary from this drop down.

3. Type in or paste in the word you wish.

4. Now, from the pop up menu just to the left of the text box, select either
dictionary or Thesaurus.
5. Now, press return. That'll do it.

Many thanks Jim.

I got BrailleBlaster to run in terminal finally with the following message.
The Braille facility is not usable. See the log. Do you wish to continue?
I said yes and it opened the program I guess. I guess I need to read some

Ray I thought there used to be a keystroke defined to open dictionary but I

I just used spotlight and typed in dictionary and it opened quite nicely.

Re: Apple Script saving .aiff file

2014-03-16 Thread Keith Watson
Tracy,

I am not sure why you want to save a file out for this. Maybe a little more
context would help. In any case you can add a delay before the say statement.
Maybe something like this.

beep
delay 1
say Hello World using Tessa

Not sure exactly how to incorporate the beep without some Google Foo but you
get the idea.

One reason I'm doing this via Apple script instead of save to iTunes as a

Re: Apple Script saving .aiff file

2014-03-16 Thread Keith Watson
Tracy,

Ok, so your later note says that you are doing exactly what I suggested in my
earlier reply. Serves me right for not reading the entire thread. Although I do
stand by my request for more context. So are you wanting to create a wav file
with the beep and the text spoken by that voice in order to incorporate it into
another script using do shell script “afplay ~/path_to_file/sayit.wav”? If so
why not just leave the lines in the script.

Irrigardless, I will look into it and get back with you in a bit, if not in the
morning.

Yes, and I found out it works. My husband, who used to teach Excel for

For my simple uses, yes, putting the shift with the command v pastes the

Re: tagging people in Facebook

2014-03-16 Thread Teresa Cochran
It's hard to review what you do on any screen-reader, but this method has
worked consistently for me. While writing your status, press the at symbol
(shift-2 on the keyboard) immediately followed by the person's name or a large
part outhe name and press enter. Finish the status. When you review your post
on your wall with Voiceover, it will say the name with a link and menu, which
indicates the person has been tagged.

OK so I've been told that if you put the # symbol before a name in an FB
post, that will tag the person. For some reason it only adds a link to the
 first word.

Also, when I use the Tag people in your posts feature, it doesn't tag them
 but says I'm with them.

What am I doing wrong? :)

Re: Apple Script saving .aiff file

2014-03-16 Thread Keith Watson
Tracy,

Ok, so here is what I have come up with. I don’t think that it’s what you want
but its a start.

set filePath to ((path to home folder as text) Documents:) as text
set fileName to foo.aiff
beep
delay 0.5
say Hello World using Tessa saving to filePath fileName

I suspect that you want the beep included in the aiff file and I am not sure
exactly how to accomplish that. Maybe you could concatenate a beep.aiff file
and foo.aiff together to get what you are trying to accomplish. If thats even
the case from my interpretationn of your earlier emails.

I have no idea what suddenly brought this on, but this morning when I tried to

to be nonexistant, and now all my messages seem to be in my inbox folder, which
also belongs to my hotmail acount, which I rarealy use anymore, and is now
loded with 500plus messages.
I can VO+right arrow around and eventually find my gmail folder, but it never
has anything in it, along with the folder for my business acount, but for some
reason, when I press whichever letter is supposed to be associated with each
folder, GMail for example, the computer just makes noise and won't bring it up.
I have no idea what to make of this, considering the fact that I haven't done
anything to change my settings, and can't seem to figure out how to fix this.

Sorry for the delay in getting back with you on this. The wife had me working

particular folder with an action that says, if all of the following, extension
is pdf do the following. run AppleScript with the code I sent. then move the
file to wherever you wish.

2. Sorry I forgot that I left my It is done Imperious Leader! wav file in

3. No you don't need to enter the version number. But you do need to remove the

set theResult to do shell script grep -i 'encoding' quoted form of
 myFile   /dev/null  echo 1 || echo 0
 if theResult is 0 then

 2. Do I need to have those .wav files for it's done etcetera for those alert
sounds to work? I guess I can just change that path name to point to one of
the system files and it should work? Or I could just remove that line
 entirely?

 3. Do I need to enter the version number for PDFPen?

 Nic

Re: Accessible and Automated OCR Workflow

2014-03-16 Thread Keith Watson
Ooops, don't think I quite answered your first question in full. theFile is an
alias to the file that Hazel is performing the action on. So that line of code
calls a shell script to look at the file for a specific string. If its there
then the file is already OCR'd and nothing needs to be done to it. If its not
there then OCR it.

 Hi Keith,

 Three more questions.

 1. What do the following lines do? Do they test whether the file is a
text-based or image-based pdf? Do I need to customise any of that stuff (e.g.
the MyFile thing), or do I simply copy and paste it as is?
set myFile to POSIX path of theFile
set theResult to do shell script grep -i 'encoding' quoted form of

Anne,

I have a friend who owns ABBY. I will ask him to play with it a bit to see if
it can be substituted.

I have both ABBYY FineReader Express and FineReader Pro, neither were in the

way to determine whether an API is available?

 Nick,

Depends on if ABBY has included an API for AppleScript. I can't tell you as
I don't own it. I do know that PDFPen uses ABBY for their OCR. At least that
is what I have seen in my Applications folder.

As for the tabs in AppleScript. They are just for readability. Keeps the
different sections of the script straight in my head.

 Hi Keith,

 Thanks a bunch for that!

Just a couple of questions. First, generally, are the tabs significant in
Apple Script? I suspect yes but I've never learnt Apple Script so I'm not
 sure.

Second, do you have any idea if ABBYY FineReader is scriptable and could it
thus be used instead of PDFPen in that script? Without any training or
anything it seems ABBYY FineReader gives me better results generally.

Thanks again and all the best,
 Nic

Re: download progress reports using itunes on the mac

2014-03-16 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Press cmd-option-4 to open your Downloads window while in iTunes. You can then
Interact with the Downloads table within this window to check the progress of
each item being downloaded. If you are only downloading one item though, there
is no real need to open the Download window, simply go to the LCD panel, and it
can be accessed in there. If it is displaying the current song or something
like that, just press the Show Next View button in the LCD panel and you
should get the Download progress.

HTH.
