Looking for an old MacVisionaries podcast

2015-11-20 Thread Mike Busboom
Hello everyone,

Quite some time ago, an individual did a podcast in which he use an Apple
Bluetooth keyboard, and moved apps into various folders on his iPhone or iPad.
When I went onto the Applevis site, the place where I believe the podcast was
located, I was unable to find it. Perhaps I missed it, but I looked sort of
hard.

If anyone knows where this podcast is, I’d appreciate knowing. If the podcast
is no longer on the site, would someone be willing to send me a Dropbox link if
they happened to have downloaded and saved it?

Thanks and kind regards,

Mike

RE: how do i begin?

2015-11-20 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Zoe,

When you say a USB key, are you referring to one of those little key-fob like
devices that are smaller than the size of an average finger? If so, I’m not
certain I would use such a device to serve as the storage media for my backups.
All things being equal, they are remarkably slow. While these little USB keys
are marvelous for quickly transferring or even transporting data files, they
would definitely not be my device of choice.

If you have the money, I would recommend that you go to your local technology
retailer and purchase a portable USB hard drive. In the USA, for example, one
can acquire such a device at Best Buy for approximately $50.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

2015-11-20 Thread Zoe Fiogkos

So what do I do now? How to I back up my system before attempting the

Zoey,

I could be wrong but you use TimeMachine to back up your system. Think
of it as a Windows Backup.
I hope someone can give further clarification.

RE: how do i begin?

2015-11-20 Thread Zoe Fiogkos
Ok I have an external but it's got a lot of music and stuff on it. I could
transfer things onto the little key and make room on that for the back up. If
you around in an hour or so, look for my mail if you can to help me proceed
with the external. On the external there is a section that says mac I don't
know if I have to connect it and click that tab and do something or what?
Anyhow if anyone can chime in here I would appreciate it. For now let me make
room on the c gate.

Hi guys, I have decided to upgrade my mac, and took the advice of a member who
said to back up my system. Apperantly I need 28.8 gb of space to back up and I
have I u s b key that has 59 gb of space so my questions are two, but let’s
begin with the first.
Do I need to format this key somehow to use with the imac? Or do I just
connect and ready to go?

Do the following
Voice over and m m

This is control option m m and you are in the extra menu across the top of the
screen
Now voice over and right arrow to you hear time capseul then voice over and
down arrow in the menu to what you want
The first is backup and if you do a voice over and spacebar it will start the
first backup and it will take a while for the first one just let it go.

VMware interface

2015-11-20 Thread E.T.
Windows 7 is installed and running pretty good now. I am using full
screen mode as I do not intend to in both OSs a great deal once I finish

I have VM set to use the Windows 8 keyboard profile as it seems the
best choice. Couple things I have experienced is one, if I switch to OS
X and go into Finder, I have trouble navigating there. For example, I
may want to navigate to the sidebar but I cannot stop interacting with
the view browser.

2nd thing is, I get phantom windows a lot when I am in OS X.

Would appriciate any tips on resolving these two things. Thanks.

how to keep iTunes from starting

I thought I remembered a keystroke that would keep iTunes from launching

Anybody know this keystroke?

Re: Sprint launches LTE+ service

2015-11-20 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Just wish to know, can’t you get a good pay as you go service from US if you
can’t afford contract?

I have a Pay as you go plan but once I have put the credit on it, I can spend
the same credit to get an all you eat data add on with excellent voice calling
minutes which last for 30 days. However, I rarely use the voice calling
minutes as everyone I know has an I phone so I take advantage of I message and
Audio Face time both is free and all you can eat data unlimited when I’m out
and about. Of course I use wireless at home so no cost at all.

Just interested to know.

Thanks.

RE: should it be taking this long?

2015-11-20 Thread Zoe Fiogkos
Thanks chris but unfortunately the back up failed because even though c gate
gives me the option for mac and pc it tells me something about paragon, sorry I
don’t remember exactly and it says its not compatible, and then it tells me if
I want to make the disk mac only but I cannot do that because it wants to erase
all my files.
I have my music, files, documents, etc. I view and use these files with
windows and I cannot get rid of them. So now I’m stuck again. Since I can’t
use the 64 gb stick I have and the 2 tb c gate drive is not compatible, I
cannot back up the mac, therefore I cannot upgrade to el capitan either. So I
spent 3 days killing my brain trying to figure out things on the mac and now it
looks like it was all for nothing.
Thanks
Zoe

I think it really just depends on how much data you are actually backing up. I
have a friend who backed up about 300GB of data to Time Machine, and from what
I vaguely remember her saying, it took somewhere around 5 hours.

2015-11-20 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello Scott.

I have 4G. I think you can get various kinds of speed is here, but I'm not sure.

I am on three, so I am familiar with their network. 4G comes at no additional
cost.

It is very fast!

I forgot to add one more thing.

With 3, I can for example go to the USA and use my network and only get charged
as if I was calling from the UK. 3 has agreements with certain countries that
you can go there and get charged the same as if you were calling from your
country of origin.

Kawal, there are all sorts of options in the states now which is a real
improvement over how things were. You can buy pre and post paid services from
the big carriers here now, T-Mobile has a very flexible set of plans and then
there are the resellers / rebranded services that have even lower cost and pay
as you go options.
For example here in the states my plan is $100 US monthly which I think

I thought I remembered a keystroke that would keep iTunes from launching
automatically when I plug the iPhone into my mac. Sometimes I just want to
charge it and not have it sync and do all the other crap that it does when
connecting a phone.
Anybody know this keystroke?
Thanks,

Re: Option t for opening text edit

2015-11-20 Thread Chris Gilland
First off, option+T shouldn’t open Text Edit, unless you’ve gone in and changed
that shortcut. Normally by default, option+T, provided, obviously, that
keyboard commander is enabled, should announce the time of day.

Re: should it be taking this long?

2015-11-20 Thread Chris Gilland
I think it really just depends on how much data you are actually backing up. I
have a friend who backed up about 300GB of data to Time Machine, and from what
I vaguely remember her saying, it took somewhere around 5 hours.

RE: back up failed

2015-11-20 Thread Zoe Fiogkos
First of all I don’t know how to do that. Second of all I have a lot of files
on there that I use on my windows pc. That’s why I tried to install the drive
on the mac and when it said option for mac and pc I said yes but unfortunately
it says something like about paragon and that it’s not compatable. So now I’m
stuck again. Don’t know what to do.

Oh, you probably have paragon ntfs installed, and I’ll bet you anything that
your drive is partitioned as ntfs instead of mac journaled extended. That
would explain it, if so.

Re: back up failed

2015-11-20 Thread Chris Gilland
That can be done in Disk Utility, but yeah, if you have a lot of data on the
drive, then you’d definitely not want to go that avenue… especially not if you
plan to use the drive both on Windows, and also on the mac. Sounds like at
this point, you’re unfortunately kind of in a catch 22 situation.

Chris.

2015-11-20 Thread Chris Moore
Hi,
We don’t know what the mac installer did to your drive. To use time machine
you need a mac partition. One approach would be to use disk utility to create
two partitions on the drive: one for TM backups (mac) and a second for your
data files (ext fat).
Let us know what disk utility tells you about the current partitions on the
drive.

Re: VMware interface

2015-11-20 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Yes, don’t use Unity. Switch in and out of full-screen mode with
Control-Command-F (check Window menu), or carefully operate the VM in
single-window mode only. In the View menu, turn off the showing of everything
in full-screen (not strictly necessary, but safe and cool). Now in global
Preferences, set the showing of the menu bar to “Never”. You should not have
problems navigating in OS X or Windows, nor any phantom window then.

One more thing: sometimes VoiceOver gets “Stuck” if it was running while you
are in a VM. The remedy is to minimise transitions between operating systems,
or turn VO off while in Windows. A good idea anyway, of course.

RE: ok got an external now what?

2015-11-20 Thread Zoe Fiogkos
Let's start from the beginning. I have no personal files on the mac that I
want saved. I have been trying to learn the mac and in doing so I've run into
so many problems that it looks like no one on the list can explain accept to
say it might be mavricks and older versions of pages. So I decided to upgrade
to el capitan but to do so people on the list said I should back up at least my
system. So I have a u s b stick capacity 64 gb and time machine says I need 28
gb of free space. Someone on the list said not to use a stick for a back up
because they are slow. So I pulled out my external which at the store the guy
told me I could use for a mac and windows. I've been using this drive for the
last few years to back up important documents, mail messages, pictures, videos
and music all with windows. I plugged the drive into windows and it said I
have one and a half tb of free space. It said something in the properties
ntfs. On the drive there is something called mac install dmg. I think the
rest you guys no. now you guys are telling me something about disk utility.
Please be patient with me, but what is that? What exactly are you guys telling
me to partition? My external or my iMac drive?

Re: back up failed

2015-11-20 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Don’t format that disk and don’t use it for Time Machine yet. Get a copy of
your data onto a second external drive first. That USB key will probably do
just what you want.

Time Machine wants Mac OS X Extended volumes for backups. That means
destroying any existing data on the device. Moreover, Time Machine wants to
consume as much space as there is available, so sharing Time Machine with other
uses is not a good idea.

When you’re up and running with El Capitan, shove your important stuff onto
iCloud Drive, where you can’t accidentally format the drive.

Don’t rush into anything. There is a tomorrow. :)

Re: ok got an external now what?

2015-11-20 Thread Brian Moore
Hi. Okay, first question, do you have things on your external that you
want to save?

if yes, we have a problem and you can't use that drive for a timemachine
backup as this will erase the content on the drive.

if no, , then we can make this work but we will have to make changes to
the drive to make it operate on mac. by default, mac can not write to a
drive with the ntfs file system. This is changable but not without a
complicated install process that is really beyond the scope of this message.

Sorry have not been following this whole thread so people may have
already given these instructions.

if you are okay with loosing the stuff on the drive, write me privately
and I can give you instructions on how to make this drive work with mac
in a whole bunch of detaill that should make it easy.

because I am in Toronto like you still might be, we could do some of
this on the phone as well.

Brian.

Hi,
We don’t know what the mac installer did to your drive. To use time machine
you need a mac partition. One approach would be to use disk utility to create
two partitions on the drive: one for TM backups (mac) and a second for your
data files (ext fat).

Let us know what disk utility tells you about the current partitions on the
drive.

Chris

Hi Zoe,

No. The USB key really is too slow for a backup device, although it might work
for that. I’m suggesting simply that you ensure that the files you value most
dearly are somewhere other than either that Mac or that External hard drive.
That’s all. Once you’re sure your data is safe, then you may go ahead with
wiping, backup, upgrade, and so on.

Cheers,

would explain it, if so.

I think it really just depends on how much data you are actually backing up.
I have a friend who backed up about 300GB of data to Time Machine, and from
what I vaguely remember her saying, it took somewhere around 5 hours.

How to Delete or "Forget" a WiFi Network in Windows 10

2015-11-20 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

To those of you using Windows 10 on your Mac, the following piece comes to
us courtesy of SimpleHelp.com.

If you are using Jaws 16 or later, I strongly suggest that you use the Jaws
Touch Cursor to navigate dialog boxes.

Enjoy and Good Luck,

Mark

How to Delete or "Forget" a WiFi Network in Windows 10

This brief guide will take you step by step through the process of removing
(also known as "forgetting") a Wireless Network in Windows 10.

Two of the most common reasons for deleting the connection settings of a
wireless network that you've previously connected to are:
1.
Troubleshooting a connection that no longer works.
2.
To stop your device from automatically connecting to networks you don't use
regularly (particularly helpful for laptop and tablet users).

Here are the quick steps to take in order to remove a wireless network from
Windows 10:
1.
Click the "Start" button and select Settings

2.
Select Network & Internet

3.
Select Wi-Fi from the column on the left side of the window. From the Wi-Fi
panel now displayed on the right side of the window, scroll down to and
select/click Manage Wi-Fi settings

4.
Scroll down to the Manage known networks section. From the list of all of
your "known" (saved) Wi-Fi networks, select the one you want to delete by
clicking on it once. Once it's been selected, a Forget button will appear.
Click that button to remove the associated Wireless Network.

5.
Select each of the other networks you want to delete (if any) and repeat the
"click Forget" process.

That's it!

I am so sorry, Zoey, that you are feeling this way! This should absolutely
*never!* be the way anyone should have to feel who is learning a new piece of
technology. I don’t care if it is an I O S device, a Windows machine, a mac,
etc.

I unfortunately do not have calling to Canada from either a lan line, or a cell
phone, however, I’ll tell you what. Even if you have to talk to me this way
through the Windows side of things instead of the mac, I’d be absolutely
thrilled to talk to you over Skype, or Facetime, if that would help.

I promise that you will get this.

Let me just encourage you by saying this: though I am a very very advanced,
and very quick learner, the mac did take me some time, after only using Windows
to get used to. It wasn’t so much I didn’t understand it, nor that I didn’t
know how to do certain things with the mac. I just found it a bit awkward.

The biggest thing for me was, I was patient, and didn’t allow myself to get
overwhelmed. When I started to feel frustrated, I put the mac aside, and just
took a break.

Please don’t be so hard on yourself. And please don’t beat yourself up! We
all have different learning levels, strategies, and processes for learning
certain things. For example, I do better when someone actually takes my hand
and guides me step by step. Once shown, I generally can figure things out once
I know the basics. On the other hand, others may find this method very
frightening.

You have to find a balance of what works best for you with your given
circumstances. And, not a single person should tell you you’re asking too many
questions. I’m sorry, but anyone doing that is a neurotic jerk!

Anyway, I hope this at least gives you some encouragement/motivation. Don’t
ever feel that there is a stupid question. The only stupid question is the one
you fail to ask.

Chris.

Re: VMware interface

2015-11-20 Thread E.T.
By menu bar, are you referring to the Applications menu? I set that
to Never and things looked to get a bit goofy. I will go at it again
later and look at what happens when I change options one at a time.

I also turned off the full screen mini bar, not even sure if I used
that yet.

Its better. I did find I could not use the standard Windows
selection method when holding control key and selecting non contiguous
files. Can that be the Windows 8 keyboard profile?

I will disable VO while in Windows. Its a bit strange to be in
Windows and accessing the Apple menu bar.

Thanks as always for your help.
