question about teathering with an iPhone

2009-07-30 Thread Mickey Quenzer

Hello all:

I am considering getting an Iphone. I would replace an ATT 8525 which
I currently have with ATT.

I would like to have a couple of questions answered please!

1. Can you tether an Iphone to a laptop?

2. Can the Iphone be used as a wireless router?

I am needing to have internet on a computer at church and want to use
the 3G network connection.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Eric,

Tell ya what I have not seen anything that says it is truly 30% more than
other hardware. However, even if that were true, I'd gladly pay 30% more for
a product that is of a higher quality than most other similar devices on the
market. In fact when you start to consider and compare the cost of a PC to a
Mac the PC is less expensive. THis is partially because vendors such as
Dell, HP, etc. get paid by vendors to install trial software etc. on the
machines sold. There are a lot of things that help to reduce the price of
PCs.
Also, consider the fact that many handset manufacturers are practically
giving phones away to move them. THe carriers subsidize the handsets and
then there are the offers of by one get one free etc. APple does not have
to make such deals and yet people will stil purchase the product. So, what
does that tell you? Apple sets the price and if you want the product you
will pay for it. If not, then you did not want that product. Hey I
traded/sold a G4 Mini for $200 and it was about seven years old. Could you
sell a seven-year old PC for about a third of its original value after seven
years? Probably not.

Honestly I hear you, but I just do not agree. There are people out there
who have other disabilities or have no disabilities at all and have the same
issues as you. My point is Apple nor any company should be expected to
subsidize anything for anyone and I am including myself. There are companies
like Gizelle that takes older equipment and resells it. A lot of times you
can get a very good deal on a machine. There are also other companies that
do something similar. So, there are sources available, but I just see no
reason for APple regardless of how much money they have to get into the
business of providing machines at a reduced price for someone with a
disability. I think your number exercise is leaving out the larger community
of people with disabilities. YOu start adding in all the different types of
disabilities you will see the cost would go up substantially.
You know nothing is easy and we all have to work with what we have
available to us. I never said it would be easy or seem fair, but if you have
food to eat and a place to live I think you have the basic needs met. This
whole idea of redistributing the wealth of companies and individuals is
unreasonable and counterproductive, and that is what you are advocating.
I think the fact that APple does not charge for VoiceOver is a
considerable advantage because hey you aren't buying a $500 computer and
tacking another chunk of change on top just to get a usable screen reader. I
think that counts for something. :)

about $30 in the hole each month).

this computer and 1 handheld radio are about the only things I own
outright (and the computer is about 4 years old).

now, if I were employed, I wouldn't even have these problems. I would be
living in a slightly nicer place (outside of gang territory), paying my
taxes, having real health insurance, and buying real food (not the cheap
crap chock full of chemistry and virtually no food value).

you are right, too, that apple doesn't HAVE TO reduce their prices. they
could garner an even bigger share of the laptop and desktop markets if they
did. they don't HAVE TO offer some discounts to those who are disabled, but
they could and it wouldn't hurt their bottom line at all.
Yes, I could save up only IF I were able to. hell, the internet I had to
beg from a neighbor on a wireless node.

so yeah, I have a lot on my plate that wouldn't be there otherwise

The backup on your computer should preserve the data and kind of what you
might think of as the shell of how your apps were configured on your screens

for those apps.

However, if you look around the store you will notice that albums no
longer have this button, and instead work like iOS and just feature a song
number which is dimmed. So I guess the store is still very much under
 construction.

I do subscribe to iTunes Match. This is great for my music. Unfortunately
iTunes Match doesn't cover all my movies, TV shows and, most important of
all, my audiobooks. These are also all a bit too big for Dropbox so I have
to do old school 20th Century back ups on the ground. :)

All the same, I think I might end up just getting the Airport Extreme and
using external HDs for the back ups which I can store off site.

I'll always use Dropbox though as it's so much more than just a cloud back
up service. In fact, the cloud back up is just a cool side effect. The best
part is that it keeps all my devices in sync. Create or edit a file on one
device and the others synchronise within seconds. Plus your back ups are in
the cloud. Not like Time Capsule back ups which are on site, so if anything
bad happens to your computer there's a good chance the same will happen to
your Time Capsule. IN short, I agree with Kawal that Dropbox is so much
 cooler than Time Capsule.

Thanks for all the tips, Kawal! You're motivating me to pay that extra to
 get an Apple Airport.

 Cheers,
 Nic

few years ago, my employer purchased an iMac for our classroom. I'll admit
that, for a couple of years, I truly hated using the Mac, which I think was
more due to my 20-year windows bias. After listening to a lot of tutorials
and rummaging through a lot of Web sites, I've gotten to the point where I
absolutely love using the Mac and would be quite pleased if I could get one
for my next computer. I'm on this list to ask questions as they arise and I
also just want to do a lot of reading and try and catch up on gaps in my

I'll tell you that even when I despised the Mac I clearly saw its benefits
and I probably could have given a talk to 100 people and might have been able
to convince most of them to at least consider switching from Windows to the
Mac, even while I was going through my own love-hate relationship with it. I
think that my recent purchase of an iPhone also helped me to warm up to Apple

 iOS and Yosemite this fall.
thanks for being there and I'm glad this list is available.

You would used the dongle for the device that does not have Bluetooth I think.
That Logitech keyboard has three buttons at the top of the keyboard just to the
right of the escape button which are for each device.

There is a button on the back of the keyboard that you press to get it in
repairing mode.
So this step would be one. Press the button that you want to configure.
To press and hold the button on the bottom of the keyboard for about two
seconds.
Three go into the Bluetooth setting on the device that you want to use and pick
the Bluetooth keyboard double tap on that too. It should say connected.
Now that keyboard is paired with the device that you selected.
Call me if you have any questions.
Take care.

Hi Dave,

Yes, I remember that now. You are still in Mojave. Well, a couple of things
to mention.

1. Apple will not update anything other than security patches for Mojave now.
So, contacting Accessibility will give you some possible assistance, but Apple
will not address an issue like that in an older OS.

2. I wonder if your issue has to do with physical keyboard contacts more than
an accessibility issue. That is, maybe your key presses are not always
reacting as they should. You can test this by turning on your Keyboard
commander and pressing any of the keys in that combination to see if they are
responding on every press.

I have we have a PayPal debit card and I use that all the time to transfer

make sure that card is selected when you transfer money.

Re: Turning voiceover on and off quickly

2021-10-31 Thread Mickey Quenzer
You need to set up the accessibility shortcut to be voiceover if you have it
set up correctly when you see the accessibility shortcut it should say
“Accessibility ShortcutAccessibility Shortcut, VoiceOver”
If it doesn’t say that, you need to go double tap on that and look down until
you see the word voice ability voice over and double tap that item to set that
as a shortcut the shortcut is what happens when you click the side button three
times.

Hi,

You are correct in that you did not say about triple-tapping on the screen.
That was someone else who was trying to help, so I mentioned that so you did
not try to do it and find out that it wasn’t what you were looking for.

Yes, using Siri as Dave mentioned is totally an option. Alternatively, go to
Settings, Accessibility, then scroll to the bottom of this screen to the
Accessibility Shortcut item. Make sure that it is still set to toggle
VoiceOver on/off. You only want it to have VoiceOver selected, otherwise it
will bring up a menu of choices instead of simply turning off/on VoiceOver.

What I meant to say is that I used to press the home button 3 times rapidly to
disarm voice over and 4 times to turn it back on.

This allowed my sighted wife to help me create a new contact for example.

I'm not sure how by simply turning the volume of voice over up or down would be
of help in any circumstances and would still burden the sighted person by it's
interference.

Incidentally, time mentioned Serie for turning voice over off and on.

Do you mean that I'd press the home button for a few seconds, until I hear a
tone then say something like "Serie, turn voice over on" or whatever.

Thanks guys for any assistance.

Very best wishes,

Andy Logue.

Hi,

Actually, a three-finger double-tap does not toggle VoiceOver on and off. The
three-finger double-tap toggles on/off VoiceOver speech, but VoiceOver gesture
navigation remains on. This would be problematic for a sighted user as their
normal gestures would not work as expected. Therefore, you could confirm that
the Accessibility shortcut is still set correctly as Doug suggested, or you
could use Siri to turn VO on and off.

Re: Should I upgrade to Ventura?

2022-10-28 Thread Mickey Quenzer
Hello Donna:
What makes you hesitate about upgrading your Mac?
what subjects do you teach and what programs do you use? That might help us
figure out what would be best for you.

Try turning off Audio Ducking, and see if that makes any difference.

Hi,

I've noticed lately that my vo volume tends to vary at times. It mostly
happens when I am scrolling through a website. I am running big sur on a 2013

While this isn't a huge deal, it's very annoying to me so I'd like to fix it.
Anybody know why this happens and what to do about it?

Thanks,
Cait

Finding out which song is playing in the music app

2023-03-27 Thread Mickey Quenzer
Hello:
I have iOS 16.4 running on an iPhone 12 pro max.
I’ve just noticed that when you’re in the music app you cannot tell which
song is being played.
Does anybody know if there’s any specific settings you should have set up
an order to make this happen? I used to remember that it said now playing
before the song name. Any suggestions would be appreciated thanks!
