[MCN-L] El Anatsui | FREE & Interactive Tour
Hi everyone, I hope that you are well. On behalf of the team, I would like to invite you to join us this evening (7PM ET / 4PM PT) for Considering Topography, featuring the work of El Anatsui. Following our two week break (we missed you) - join us tonight, as together we explore the work of El Anatsui, a sculptor from Ghana who currently lives and works in Nigeria. As both a sculptor and teacher, Anatsui’s career has spanned more than forty years. Known for his repurposing of alcohol bottle caps into large-scale hanging installations, Anatsui’s art weaves together the discarded materials of production, trade, and consumption made prevalent in Africa during the colonial expansion of Europe and the Americas. His sculptures have been collected by major international museums. This includes the British Museum (London), the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the de Young Museum (San Francisco), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Guggenheim (Abu Dhabi), Osaka Foundation of Culture (Osaka), the Tate Modern (London), and the Museum of Modern Art (New York). [MCN-L] BitCurator Users Forum 2021 Call for Proposals - EXTENDED
*The call for proposals <https://bitcuratorconsortium.org/forum/#cfp> deadline for BitCurator Users Forum 2021 <https://bitcuratorconsortium.org/forum/> has been EXTENDED!* We will welcome submissions through *June 4, 2021*. *The 2021 BitCurator Users Forum will be held virtually October 12-14, 2021* . An international, community-led organization with 35 member institutions, the BCC promotes and supports the application of digital archives tools and practices in libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural heritage organizations. In previous years, the BitCurator Users Forum has focused on sharing strategies, approaches, and best practices for using digital archives tools and methods within processing workflows in archives, libraries, and museums. While we still encourage proposals in these topic areas, we also invite community members to explore themes that focus on areas such as starting from scratch, iteration and scalability, implementing “good enough” practices, issues pertaining to access and discovery, and hearing from intersecting perspectives and new voices. The Program Committee welcomes participation from organizations and individuals working outside of academic and special collections libraries, members from BIPOC communities, students, and new professionals. *The BitCurator Users Forum is open to all. You do not need to be a BCC member or user to submit a proposal and/or attend the event. Please note that, like last year, this year’s registration rates will include a $0 option. We will also consider waiving registration fees for speakers.* *About the BitCurator Users Forum* The BitCurator Users Forum brings together representatives from libraries, archives, museums, and related information professions engaged in or considering digital archival work to acquire, better understand, and make available born-digital materials. The two-day forum will balance discussion of theory and practice of digital archiving and related digital analysis workflows with hands-on activities for users at all levels of experience with digital archival methods in general, including the BitCurator environment, and other tools for use in digital analysis and curation. *Program Committee* The BitCurator Users Forum is organized by the BCC’s Program Committee: Elvia Arroyo-Ramirez, UCI Libraries, Leadership Team Brian Dietz, NC State University Libraries, Leadership Team Lourdes Johnson, SJSU iSchool 2019 Graduate, Leadership Team Shira Peltzman, UCLA Libraries, Leadership Team David Cirella, Yale University Libraries Elizabeth Dunham, Arizona State University Jessica Farrell, Educopia Institute Wendy Hagenmaier, Georgia Tech Mary Jackson, NYU MIAP 2020 Graduate Monique Lassere, Houghton Library, Harvard University Thandokazi Maceba, UCT Libraries, University of Cape Town Margo Padilla, New-York Historical Society Caitlin Perry, Educopia Institute Kelly Phillips, Northern Arizona University Alice Prael, Yale University Libraries ___ You are currently subscribed to mcn-l, the listserv of the Museum Computer Network (http://www.mcn.edu) To post to this list, send messages to: mcn-l@mcn.edu To unsubscribe or change mcn-l delivery options visit: http://lists.mcn.edu/mailman/listinfo/mcn-l The MCN-L archives can be found at: http://www.mail-archive.com/mcn-l@mcn.edu/

[MCN-L] New publication and call for feedback on The Collective Wisdom Handbook: Perspectives on Crowdsourcing in Cultural Heritage
Dear MCN, You might have seen earlier calls for participation in our collaborative writing project, or our surveys asking for perspectives from project stakeholders or volunteers on crowdsourcing / citizen science / online volunteering projects in museums, libraries and archives - here's the result! The first version of The Collective Wisdom Handbook: Perspectives on Crowdsourcing in Cultural Heritage <https://britishlibrary.pubpub.org/?utm_source=blog_medium=blog_campaign=community_review> is now available to read online. And not just to read – we're also asking for comment from people with expertise and experience in the topics we cover, from crowdsourcing to citizen science and history, to online volunteering and digital engagement with museum, library and archive collections. Your knowledge might be drawn from academic practice, from volunteering as a crowdsourcing participant, or from helping run, develop, or analyse outcomes of participatory projects. We authors are excited to open up our work for review and comment from the wider community from now to mid-August 2021. Community review is a vital part of the overall process of documenting the 'state of the art' in this field, particularly as our book was written in two intensive week-long 'sprints' <https://collectivewisdomproject.org.uk/activities/>. Our writing team <https://collectivewisdomproject.org.uk/participants-and-credits/> already represents perspectives from a range of disciplines. However, we believe that the book would benefit from additional connections to related fields, practitioners and scholarship. We particularly welcome comments that complicate or add nuance to our text. We encourage you to suggest example projects, case studies, blog posts and publications we might have missed. There are a few ways that readers can leave a trace on documents on the pubpub <https://britishlibrary.pubpub.org/> platform – you can highlight text, comment on specific lines, or comment on a document as a whole. You'll need to create a free pubpub account to do this – full details on how to set up an account and comment are available <https://v3.pubpub.org/pub/howto>. So how do we imagine comments or highlights might help our readers improve the book? - You can let us know what resonates – you can highlight text, or comment on specific lines of text with any language appropriate to you, from '+1' to 'ya!'. - Did we get something wrong? You can offer a correction in a comment. - Would the book be better if we included additional references to other projects or publications? Please let us know! - We'd also love to hear about how you might use the text – you could comment on chapters that might be particularly useful for specific uses, and let us know how they could be even more useful for you. Please bear in mind that your comments will be read by the authors as is, and that some generalisations are necessary when covering such a broad topic in just two weeks. To put it another way, please try to avoid being the dreaded 'Reviewer 2 <https://amlbrown.com/2015/11/10/how-not-to-be-reviewer-2/>' and keep your comments constructive. How this process affects the book is as yet unknown. It might lead to minor edits or more substantial updates – it depends on the response to this community review process. We will of course credit and thank any commenters who make a substantial contribution. We're also thinking about peer review models for specific chapters, perhaps something like a 'respondent' to a talk or panel discussion. If you're interested in exploring that with us, please email digitalresea...@bl.uk and include 'Collective Wisdom' in the subject line. We are lucky to work in a field with a generous, thoughtful and passionate community of practitioners, academics and volunteers in crowdsourcing and digital participation around museum, library and archive collections. We look forward to learning from your comments, questions and suggestions. The *review period for this publication will close on August 9, 2021*. After this, we’ll begin re-editing to incorporate feedback (and fix oddities in referencing etc.) and produce our final version of the book. We hope to find a 'traditional' publisher to help distribute and position the book where it can best reach our readers. [MCN-L] Dreaming of A New Collections Management System: Episode 4 Recording
Dear Colleagues, On Tuesday, May 18th, we had another fabulous discussion in our Dreaming of a New Collections Management System webinar series. This week’s conversation brought honest and critical discussions on a range of topics: getting institution-wide buy-in on adopting decolonizing or DEAI practices; institutions connecting with their local BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities; establishing institutional NAGPRA and DEAI policies and procedures for collections management and documentation; and developing customizations to collections management systems to meet NAGPRA and DEAI needs. This week Kara Vetter, Nicole Allen White, and Mikka Gee Conway shared where each of their institutions are in the process of implementing DEAI and NAGPRA initiatives and embedding those into their collections management practices. If you missed this inspiring conversation, you may find a recording of the session on our Youtube Channel <https://youtu.be/vUkIhlXq4OY>. In the next segment of our series, we will be looking to raise the profile of some of the lesser-known Collections Management System Solution Providers to learn more about how their systems are being used and adapted to meet the challenges raised in our series. The next webinar session is scheduled for June. We will share more information on this webinar in the coming weeks. Until next time, we wish you well! I got a similar result - no message seems to have been broadcast, and the list claims that, so far, no messages. This may need some further tweaking and testing - glad to help, if so. ari > On May 19, 2021, at 8:37 AM, Richard Light wrote: > > Hi, > > I tried posting to the new address from Thunderbird, but nothing > appeared. [MCN-L] Bill Traylor | FREE & Interactive Tour
Hi everyone, I hope that you are well. On behalf of the team, I would like to invite you to join us this evening (7PM ET / 4PM PT) for Considering Worlds, featuring the work of Bill Traylor. Bill Traylor is regarded today as one of the most influential American artists of the twentieth century. A Black man born into slavery in Alabama, he was an eyewitness to history: the Civil War, Emancipation, Reconstruction, Jim Crow segregation, and the Great Migration. Traylor would not live to see the civil rights movement, but he was among those who laid its foundation. Starting around 1939 - by then in his late eighties and living on the streets of Montgomery - Traylor made the radical steps of taking up pencil and paintbrush and attesting to his existence and point of view. The paintings and drawings he made are visually striking and politically assertive; they include potent distillations of tales and memories as well as spare, vibrantly colored abstractions. When Traylor died in 1949, he left behind more than one thousand works of art. [MCN-L] FREE IS Webinar: Covering the Gamut of Spectral Imaging
Covering the Gamut of Spectral Imaging: Intro to In-depth Presented by Fenella France (Library of Congress) and Dave Wyble (Avian Rochester LLC). The term "spectral imaging" is used often and can include a range of imaging options. Understanding what spectral imaging is, how to capture it, and how it can expand insights into collections with greater access to non-visible information will help attendees consider the costs and benefits. A focus on the multimodal component and links to conservation and preservation imaging and color rendering implications for soft-copy display will further explain how to make decisions about what imaging techniques to use. [MCN-L] DCMI Webinar - __May 19__ (correction) Modeling Intangible Entities in the Cultural Domains for Digital Archiving Inbox
This webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, May 19th, 2021, 21:00 UTC and is free (but registration required). There are a variety of new cultural domains for which we need to design metadata schemas. It is widely recognized that data models are crucial to design metadata schemas – we need to identify objects for which we create metadata. This webinar aims to present a set of generalized data models designed for metadata about resources in cultural domains such as intangible cultural heritage and popular culture. The presenter will first introduce the generalized data models and then discuss data models designed in the Media Arts Database project and related projects in which they are involved. Learning objectives for the webinar * Data Modeling for Digital Archiving of Cultural Entities: Fundamental aspects to model tangible/intangible entities in the cultural domains for organizing them as a digital collection. * Data Modeling for Media Arts (manga (Japanese comics), animation, video games, new media arts and performing arts): Data models as a foundation for metadata schema development in new cultural domains as a case study. * From Item-centric organization to Content-oriented organization of metadata for digital collections: Shift in the organization for digital collections from traditional item-centric resource organization to content-oriented resource organization in the Internet and Linked Open Data environments. About the speaker Shigeo Sugimoto received his BE, ME and PhD degrees from the Department of Information Science, Faculty of Engineering at Kyoto University and specializes in software engineering and computer languages. He joined University of Library and Information Science (ULIS) in 1983. ULIS became the Faculty of Library, Information and Media Science at the University of Tsukuba (iSchool@Tsukuba) after an institutional merger in 2002. He has served as a faculty member for over 35 years in Tsukuba until his retirement in 2019. He is now a professor emeritus at the University of Tsukuba. He first attended Dublin Core Workshop at Canberra in 1997. Since then, he has been actively involved in the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI). He is a member of the Governing Board of DCMI. [MCN-L] New Video Channel Launch from Hammer Museum
Hello - I’m excited to share with the community the launch of Hammer Channel from the Hammer Museum. https://channel.hammer.ucla.edu This new video platform presents over 1,000 talks, performances, conversations and more from the Hammer Museum, going back to 2005, including programs ranging from art and film to politics and activism. The site is built on a DAMS (AssetBank) that puts all of our video content in one place. For audiences, the site is organized much like a streaming service. Made possible by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Hammer Channel allows users to search, clip and share our many programs. Transcripts of every program are included on the site, making these programs easier to search and a great resource for scholars and students. The site was created by the amazing team at Cogapp, and they have made the underlying code and the framework open source. We hope this model can be replicated at other institutions, and that what we learned can be a significant resource for other museums and nonprofits who have a lot of video content to manage and publish. Numerous talented individuals in nearly every department of the museum contributed to the site. Phil Leers managed the creation of the website, in collaboration with myself, and Cogapp made the build. We had a huge team of staff who put in hours of time behind the scenes, preparing each and every video, transcripts, and the metadata for upload to the new site. Cogapp wrote up a great and comprehensive case study of the project: https://www.cogapp.com/work#/hammer-channel/ Read about Hammer Channel in this Los Angeles Times: story. https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2021-05-05/hammer-museum-channel-streaming-events We'd love to hear any feedback you have, and are happy to answer questions. Feel free to contact me or Phil anytime. Susan Edwards sedwa...@hammer.ucla.edu Phil Leers ple...@hammer.ucla.edu And I am sure the team at cogapp would be happy to discuss as well. Enjoy! [MCN-L] the universe of metadata
Good afternoon— We're beginning to assess our collections metadata; specifically, we want to make some decisions about whether and how to restructure it and clean it up. Since we don't have a metadata specialist on staff, we're looking outside the organization for insight. Our collections are mixed: archives, photographs, paintings, 3D objects (including small watercraft). Can anyone advise me on the best schemata to use for these varied holdings? How would any of you approach the structuring of mission-specific metadata which doesn't fit intuitively into existing formats? We're aiming for maximum interoperability to increase ease of sharing digital collections with larger/other repositories. We're grateful for any suggestions. [MCN-L] Applications open for free digital preservation workshop for US-based individuals offered by DPOE-N
The Digital Preservation Outreach & Education Network (DPOE-N) is excited to offer a free virtual workshop for US-based library, archives, and museum professionals focused on digital preservation and audiovisual media... *Introduction to Digital Preservation for Moving Image and Sound <https://www.dpoe.network/workshops/>* Virtual Workshop | Thursday May 27th and Friday May 28th, 2021 | 2:00-5:00pm EST *Description:* Moving image and sound materials were challenging to steward in the analog era, and now with the turn to digital preservation, an entirely new set of challenges are presented for collection managers. While there is clear overlap between digital preservation of static material and time-based media, many unique factors are involved in the latter, including characteristics such as multiple codecs within a container, multi-track audio recordings, obscure analog video formats, handling large files, and so on. The workshop will provide an overview of factors like these, alongside exercises to assist in working with moving image and sound material in digital preservation activities. This two-day workshop is designed to provide an introduction to digital preservation with a focus on the moving image and sound asset lifecycle. Alongside digital preservation fundamentals, attendees will learn about current advances in the field, format identification, what audiovisual materials to prioritize for transfer, readying materials for digitization, quality assurance and metadata for the purpose of digital preservation. An introduction to a selection of software tools, and some hands-on work will be incorporated. Participants will come away with practical skills and methods for crafting and implementing a digital preservation workflow for audiovisual materials in their collections, and a basic knowledge of the purpose and application of technical metadata. Time will be reserved for participants to sign up for one-on-one office hours so that individualized questions may be addressed by the instructor. *Details:* This workshop is being hosted by the Digital Preservation Outreach & Education Network (DPOE-N) <https://www.dpoe.network/> in partnership with New York University Moving Image Archiving & Preservation (MIAP) program and Pratt Institute School of Information. It is being offered *tuition-free*, thanks to generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. *The application for this program is now available online at:https://bit.ly/dpoen-movingimage <https://bit.ly/dpoen-movingimage>* *The deadline to apply is May 10, 2021.* Applicants must be located in the United States or US territories. The program will be limited to 25 participants, so we recommend that you do not wait to apply. Successful applicants will be notified by May 15, 2021. *Instructor:* Lauren Sorensen is a consultant specializing in moving image preservation and conservation, digital preservation and access. Over the past fifteen years, Sorensen has been employed by institutions such as Bay Area Video Coalition, Library of Congress, Canyon Cinema and as a consultant has assisted institutions such as the City of Los Angeles' Department of Cultural Affairs, Glenstone Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others with all manner of digital preservation and access activities. She co-founded the now seven-years running AMIA/DLF Hack Day, and is a contributing author in the forthcoming book Archival Accessioning by Audra Eagle Yun. She has previously served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Moving Image Archivists, and is currently on the editorial board for The Moving Image journal. She holds a Master of Arts from New York University in Moving Image Archiving & Preservation (2007), and a Bachelor of Arts in Film & Digital Media from University of California, Santa Cruz (2003). -- *Erin Barsan | Digital Preservation Outreach & Education Network (DPOE-N) Program Coordinator* pronouns: she/her/hers (what's this? <https://www.glsen.org/sites/default/files/GLSEN%20Pronouns%20Resource.pdf>) *PRATT INSTITUTE* School of Information 144 West 14th Street | 6th Floor | New York, NY 10011 (212) 647-7693 | ebar...@pratt.edu | dpoe.network <https://www.dpoe.network/> _______ You are currently subscribed to mcn-l, the listserv of the Museum Computer Network (http://www.mcn.edu) To post to this list, send messages to: mcn-l@mcn.edu To unsubscribe or change mcn-l delivery options visit: http://lists.mcn.edu/mailman/listinfo/mcn-l The MCN-L archives can be found at: http://www.mail-archive.com/mcn-l@mcn.edu/
[MCN-L] Lynette Yiadom-Boakye | FREE & Interactive Tour
Hi everyone, Join us tonight LIVE at 7PM ET / 4PM PT for Considering Complication | Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, facilitated jointly by mark, and you. Lynette Yiadom-Boakye is a British artist and writer acclaimed for her enigmatic portraits of fictitious people. The figures in Yiadom-Boakye’s paintings are not real people – she creates them from found images and her own imagination. Both familiar and mysterious, they invite viewers to project their own interpretations and raise important questions of identity and representation. “I learned how to paint from looking at painting, and I continue to learn from looking at painting. In that sense, history serves as a resource. But the bigger draw for me is the power that painting can wield across time.” Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. In this tour, we embark on a process of unlearning. Together, we explore the construction of narrative. Through close looking, we ask: what constitutes site, place, and time? How might we be complicit in the definition of self? How is identity constructed? Register HERE for your FREE e-TICKET and join us LIVE every Wednesday at 7PM ET / 4PM PT <https://www.eventbrite.com/e/149933604447> (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/149933604447) Looking forward to seeing you later. [MCN-L] BitCurator Users Forum: Call for Proposals now available
The BCC Program Committee invites proposals for the 2021 BitCurator Users Forum, to be held virtually October 12-14, 2021. An international, community-led organization with 35 member institutions, the BCC promotes and supports the application of digital archives tools and practices in libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural heritage organizations. The BitCurator Users Forum is open to all. You do not need to be a BCC member or user to submit a proposal and/or attend the event. The deadline to submit your proposals is May 28, 2021. [MCN-L] You're invited | FREE & Interactive Tour
Tonight LIVE at 7PM ET / 4PM PT Considering Openings (Part 2) How do we locate ourselves in a cinematic world when the image and the sound seem at odds with each other? About this Event Join us tonight at 7PM ET, April 21st, for Considering Openings (Part 2) with Matt. In this second of a series in which we consider the opening moments of a film, we will view and discuss the introductory scenes of two films by Francis Ford Coppola - Apocalypse Now (1979) and The Conversation (1974). The openings of these two works are unique in their use of sound to guide the viewer into the world of the film and indeed, the characters in it. We will consider the uses of both diegetic and non-diegetic music and environmental sounds in both of these films. What sonic cues indicate a particular mood? How do we locate ourselves in a cinematic world when the image and the sound seem at odds with each other? In what ways does music change our reading of a scene or an environment within a film? Register HERE for your FREE e-TICKET and join us LIVE every Wednesday at 7PM ET / 4PM PT <https://www.eventbrite.com/e/149927891359> ( https://www.eventbrite.com/e/149927891359) Looking forward to seeing you later. [MCN-L] Call for Proposals: iLRN 2021 Guided Virtual Adventures
+ CALL FOR PROPOSALS: GUIDED VIRTUAL ADVENTURES iLRN 2021: 7th International Conference of the Immersive Learning Research Network May 17 to June 10, 2021, on iLRN Virtual Campus, powered by Virbela ... and across the Metaverse! Technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Education Society, with proceedings to be submitted for inclusion in IEEE Xplore(r) Conference theme: "TRANSCEND: Accelerating Learner Engagement in XR across Time, Place, and Imagination" https://immersivelrn.org/ilrn2021/author-present/guided-virtual-adventures/ + Guided Virtual Adventures are small-group guided tours of 50 minutes in duration to various social and collaborative VR/AR/MR (XR) or other immersive environments and platforms. Tour destinations may be: - a third-party XR/immersive platform with which the tour guide is familiar (e.g., Altspace, Mozilla Hubs, Facebook Horizons, Vive Sync, Somnium Space, OrbusVR, Second Life, Minecraft, World of Warcraft); - a specific virtual environment that the tour guide, their institution/organization, or someone else has developed within a third-party platform; - a platform that the tour guide or their institution/organization has developed, and/or specific environments within that platform. The tour guide leads participants into the virtual spaces, co-discovering and video-documenting the learning potential and engagements found there for sharing with the wider iLRN community. # Selection Criteria and Requirements # - Preference will be given to proposals that involve environments/platforms that are freely and openly accessible. iLRN also reserves the right to place limits on the number of tours of platforms/environments of a certain type or that address a particular target audience/application vertical. - Where possible, it is strongly recommended that multiple offerings of the tour are made available so as to cater for potential people in different time zones. - Guided Virtual Adventures are expected to produce, in the course of conducting the adventure, a video recording of the immersive/XR experience through which educators and others in the iLRN community might gain a sense of what the XR space is and how it might be useful for learning, teaching, and/or assessment. *** NOTE: Guided Virtual Adventures are intended to be social activities. As such, platforms and environments to be toured must support interaction among multiple users, and participants must be afforded such opportunities for interaction. Product demos or workshops/tutorials in which participants either passively "sit and watch" or undertake individual activities in isolation of one another are not suitable for the Guided Virtual Adventures program. *** # Fees/Charges # Nonprofit organizations and educational institutions may offer their Guided Virtual Adventures, if approved, at no cost to them. Companies wishing to offer Guided Virtual Adventure tours involving their commercial products and services may submit proposals for consideration, but may be asked to contribute a modest fee commensurate with the size of their companies that will help support iLRN's nonprofit mission. Participants in Guided Virtual Adventure tours will not be charged any fees, but in order to participate must give their consent to having their video and audio activity during the tour recorded. # Submitting a Proposal # Please use this form to propose an iLRN Guided Virtual Adventure: https://forms.gle/6fjkStbbwZXespE48 # Timelines # Proposals for Guided Virtual Adventures may be submitted at any time, and are reviewed, accepted, and scheduled on a rolling basis throughout the calendar year. However, prospective tour guides specifically looking to offer their Adventures during the iLRN 2021 conference should endeavor to submit their proposals as soon as possible (ideally no later than May 1st) as the number of slots available is limited. Proposals received after all of the available slots have been filled will be considered for offering on dates/times before or after the conference. Prospective Guided Virtual Adventure tour guides can generally expect to be contacted within 2 weeks after submitting their proposals. # Contact # Inquiries regarding Guided Virtual Adventures may be directed to adventu...@immersivelrn.org . [MCN-L] In 2 hours | Delmer Daves, Spike Lee & Alexander Sokurov
Hello everyone - I hope you are well, Matt here with your weekly invite :) Tonight (7PM ET / 4PM PT) we explore the work of Delmer Daves, Spike Lee, and Alexander Sokurov in Considering Art : Considering Point of View. About this Event The subjectivity of the camera invites us not just into the events that unfold within a film, but experiencing those events through the gaze of a character or entity within the film - or even asking us, as viewers, to become a ‘character’ within the world of the film. Together we ask: Narratively, what does a POV shot provide that a more standard ‘third-person’ shot does not? How does a POV change our relationship to the events within a film? To our relationship with the characters? In this tour we will view examples from recent and historical films that have broadened the use and meaning of point-of-view shots within the cinematic experience. Registration is FREE and open to ALL. Please feel free to share within your networks. [MCN-L] Tonight | Agnès Varda & Fritz Lang
Hello everyone - Matt here with your weekly invite + 3 new events just added. Tonight (7PM ET / 4PM PT) we explore the work of Agnès Varda & Fritz Lang. About this Event In this first of a series, we will view, consider, and unravel the opening scenes of two films from the 20th century. A film’s opening scene is an entryway into a world being built before the viewer’s eyes, through the decisions of a filmmaker. It is the moment that we, as viewers, begin to temporarily suspend awareness of our surroundings and our disbelief that the events about to unfold on the screen are illusory. What do the earliest moments of a film tell us about what is to follow? How does an opening scene become a short film within a film? Why are these first glimpses into the world of a film, along with the very last moments in the film’s ending, so crucial to our understanding of the film as a whole? Registration is FREE and open to ALL. Please feel free to share within your networks. [MCN-L] Sharing our interactive, mobile-friendly digital map (free & open source)
Hi, folks! We wanted to share our latest mapping work, hoping it might help our peer institutions. When COVID first hit, we were tasked with creating a digital alternative to paper maps that would help visitors wayfind on their personal cell phones. Several months later, the project is in a usable state and we've open-sourced the code so other institutions can benefit. You can see the online example of our map <https://map.fieldmuseum.org/> or point your developers to the project on Github <https://github.com/arcataroger/openlayers_indoor_map>. You're free to use and modify this as you see fit. Please note that we will not be able to provide much support, due to limited resources. Visitor features include: - Usable on both desktop and mobile devices - Clickable points of interest with a popup description & picture - Variable levels of detail based on zoom & importance - Permalinks for floors & points of interest - COVID one-way flows (also useful for one-way exhibitions) - Relatively lightweight and fast, with additional assets lazy-loaded in the background Staff/editor/developer features: - Doesn't require any proprietary/paid software or service, just staff time. Can be created and launched with $0. - Integration with a headless CMS so editors can make changes (text, images, colors, etc.) without any coding - Created with geospatial standards in mind for broad compatibility with other web mapping platforms (geoJSON) - Thorough readme and detailed comments in the (messy, sorry) code This project was built over several months after an exhaustive look at the commercial marketplace. Although many commercial indoor mapping solutions exist (Here.com <https://venues.here.com/products/maps-sdk>, MazeMap <https://www.mazemap.com/>, IndoorAtlas <https://www.indooratlas.com/>, MapsIndoors <https://www.mapspeople.com/mapsindoors/>, WRLD <https://www.wrld3d.com/3d-maps/indoor-mapping>, among others), we had a budget of $0 and could not afford to outsource this. We consulted with several GIS & mapping professionals (thank you, AMNH!) and determined this could be done using free geospatial software (QGIS <https://qgis.org/en/site/> + OpenLayers <https://openlayers.org/>) with a series of labor-intensive workarounds. Most free online mapping tools are meant for outdoor use, so the bulk of our work (aside from manually digitizing floorplans) was in tweaking OpenLayers to display the floors of an indoor museum. This is the culmination of those months of tweaks, and we hope you find it helpful on your own mapping journey. For general questions, please contact our developer, Roger, at rt...@fieldmuseum.org. For technical issues, it's best to file an issue in Github <https://github.com/arcataroger/openlayers_indoor_map/issues> so it can be properly tracked (but email is ok too). Thanks! Sincerely, The Digital Team at the Field Museum, with thanks to our friends in Exhibitions, IT, and the Keller Science Action Center _______ You are currently subscribed to mcn-l, the listserv of the Museum Computer Network (http://www.mcn.edu) To post to this list, send messages to: mcn-l@mcn.edu To unsubscribe or change mcn-l delivery options visit: http://lists.mcn.edu/mailman/listinfo/mcn-l The MCN-L archives can be found at: http://www.mail-archive.com/mcn-l@mcn.edu/

[MCN-L] Digitization Partners
Hi all, Hope everyone is doing well. I'm working with some folks on a digitization grant, and I was wondering if anyone on here and good recommendations for partners we can collaborate with to help on the mechanics of the process e.g. different formfactors from posters to newsprint to photographs to sculptures and other 2-D art need to be scanned/photographed. Also, on the post-processing (not cataloging or presentation layers just yet, but more cleanup, normalization, etc.). Huge plus if the firm or group of folks is in Oakland, but as long as their process travels, that can be budgeted for. Please feel free to reach out either by email (s...@pac.bz) or on here so others can benefit from the answers as well. Thank you so much, and I hope everyone has a lovely weekend. [MCN-L] Tonight | Mika Rottenberg
Hello everyone - Matt here with your weekly invite. Tonight (7PM ET / 4PM PT) we explore the work of Mika Rottenberg. Join our community this evening for a sensory delve into the world of artist Mika Rottenberg. This interactive and exploratory tour led by mark aims to immerse participants into the highly textured, sensually active, and brightly colored world of plastic, capitalism, politics, and desire. Navigating a diverse portfolio of work and mediums, we aim to explore the consequences of our continual thirst for the 'new,' the 'cheap,' and the 'luxurious. We ask: How is luxury established? Who ultimately pays the price for our access to global 'free' markets and systems? When/where/can this ever end? Registration is FREE and open to ALL. Please feel free to share within your networks. Eventbrite > https://www.eventbrite.com/e/145369053753 MeetUp > https://www.meetup.com/Considering-Art/events/276842100/ *** Argentina-born, New York-based artist Mika Rottenberg is devoted to a rigorous practice that combines film, architectural installation, and sculpture to explore ideas of labor and the production of value in our contemporary hyper-capitalist world. Using traditions of both cinema and sculpture, she seeks out locations around the world where specific systems of production and commerce are in place, such as a pearl factory in China, and a Calexico border town. Through the editing process, and with footage from sets built in her studio, Rottenberg connects seemingly disparate places and things to create elaborate and subversive visual narratives. By weaving fact and fiction together, she highlights the inherent beauty and absurdity of our contemporary existence. *** About your facilitator: mark (he/him/they/them) develops and produces access platforms, programming and communities with a view toward activating art as a tool for positive political, economic and social change. The three volumes are: *Conversations with Museum Directors*, *Towards a New Reality*, and *Case Studies*. They are available together, separately, and as an eBook edition. [MCN-L] Online workshop, 6 April: From museum documentation to digital data curation. Challenges and opportunities for open access
Dear colleague, SILKNOW is a EU-funded research project that tries to improve the knowledge of silk heritage through digital technologies. Part of our goals are the dissemination of open access culture among textile and fashion heritage organizations. For more information, check http://silknow.eu/ <http://silknow.eu/> We are preparing a compendium of best practices for the cataloging of textiles, and related digital data management. To this end, we have organized a workshop where heritage professionals are invited to share the challenges they face when inventorying and cataloging their textile holdings, and when sharing openly that information. It will take place on Tuesday, 6th of April, from 3pm to 6pm CET. (A first call was disseminated in February but the event had to be postponed.) PROGRAMME 3.00 to 4.30 pm CET: From museum documentation to digital data curation. Focusing on the transition from analogue information to digital data management, i.e., how textile collections are being inventoried and cataloged. 4.30 to 6.00 pm CET: Challenges and opportunities for open access. Interoperability, semantic web tools, licenses and institutional requirements. We ask you to confirm your attendance at i...@silknow.eu <mailto:i...@silknow.eu>. If possible, we also ask you to complete this short questionnaire, which will help us prepare the workshop sessions: https://forms.gle/CAEYBZKFBYuRw1rg8 <https://forms.gle/CAEYBZKFBYuRw1rg8> It is not necessary to answer to it before attending the workshop, but we would appreciate it a lot. SILKNOW has already made public several outcomes: (https://silknow.eu/index.php/our-results/ <https://silknow.eu/index.php/our-results/>) A virtual loom that serves as a digital memory of historical weaving techniques. Thanks to its 3D visualization it shows the warp and weft in depth. A specialized multilingual thesaurus in silk with more than 800 terms on techniques, materials, machinery, motifs, among others, available in 4 languages (English, French, Spanish and Italian). An exploratory search engine and a space-time map with about 40,000 records from different museums. Kind regards, MA. Register here. <https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/5216164447216/WN_uuJHGLhzQmi0IhTAkLpgGQ>* In the past few weeks, we’ve seen an unprecedented wave of media buzz around “NFTs,” a.k.a non-fungible-tokens. In light of these headlines and hype, today there are more questions, concerns, and unknowns than there are answers about the ways in which NFTs may impact museums. While recent news has begun to illuminate the potential applications of NFTs in arts and culture, this technology also comes with a number of environmental repercussions and other obstacles that must be explored. Join Brendan Ciecko (CEO @ Cuseum), Mark Sabb (Senior Director of Innovation, Marketing & Engagement @ Museum of the African Diaspora), Holly Shen (Former Deputy Director @ San Jose Museum of Art) & Clara Blume (Deputy Director & Head of Art, Science, and Technology @ Open Austria) for a webinar conversation about NFTs and their potential impact on museums. This discussion will bring together various perspectives from the museum, art, and technology sectors to unpack the topic of NFTs, discuss concerns, and share ideas about the potential implications and opportunities for cultural organizations. We’re still only beginning to understand how NFTs may impact museums - join us for an educational conversation with the main goal of helping prepare us all as this topic evolves. [MCN-L] 笠Mike Kelley
Hello everyone! Tonight we explore the work of Mike Kelley in Considering Culture. Join us as we explore abjection, youth, class, and the divide between high and low culture. Tickets are FREE and open to ALL. Please feel free to share. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/considering-art-considering-culture-registration-145317142485 Together, we aim to explore the hidden meanings and mysterious constellations established within this prolific artist's work as psychology, philosophy, art theory, kitschy craft mediums, and awkward adolescent scenarios push against art's hierarchical history. In this tour, we ask: who/what defines culture? Where does it dwell? What becomes of background noise? And, most importantly, just what did that bear say to the monkey sitting opposite? Looking forward to interacting with you at 7PM EST. All the very best, Matt Check out our other programming here: https://linktr.ee/considering.art *** Oh, Hi. [MCN-L] Disappearing images on Matterport tours
Greetings! Has any Matterport users ever experienced images disappearing on their Matterport tours? And by "disappearing"- I mean that when you are viewing the final tour and you hover over the mattertag, the UI only displays a narrow black rectangle. Some further information: * We have consulted with their customer service, and they decided that this wasn't a priority to debug * The images are in a publicly accessible hosting site. We have not touched or altered the links in any way * The links still work in other applications, just not in Matterport * The image files are JPEGs * We are using Flickr as the workaround but I don't love the solution because you can't view a larger image in the little pop up. * It feels like it broke overnight. * It's not all images, it's just some images. Would appreciate any wisdom or other workarounds. Thanks! ___ You are currently subscribed to mcn-l, the listserv of the Museum Computer Network (http://www.mcn.edu) To post to this list, send messages to: mcn-l@mcn.edu To unsubscribe or change mcn-l delivery options visit: http://lists.mcn.edu/mailman/listinfo/mcn-l The MCN-L archives can be found at: http://www.mail-archive.com/mcn-l@mcn.edu/

[MCN-L] Dreaming of a New CMS Webinar Series Survey
Good Morning All, As many of you are already aware, the Balboa Park Online Collaborative (BPOC) has been hosting a webinar series called Dreaming of a New Collections Management System (CMS) where we have been inviting Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums (GLAM) professionals to speak about their experiences with collections management systems and some of the challenges they have faced. In future sessions, we will be providing opportunities for CMS Solution Providers to speak on how their CMS addresses the many challenges GLAM professionals face. To help facilitate these sessions, we would like to share a survey with everyone to get feedback on what challenges they would like to see CMS Solution Providers address. This is to ensure that we don’t miss anything of interest to the community. To record responses we have created a Google Form for the community to share their thoughts and opinions. You may find a link to the Google Form <https://forms.gle/u5SX7cu4o4KdE4gn8>here. If you have any questions or concerns about this survey, please feel free to reach out to me at any time. Together we venture into the work of two important contemporary artists’ whose practices feature the use of text : Jenny Holzer and Barbara Kruger. In vastly different approaches, both artists measure our expectations of written text, often questioning the boundaries of private and public thought as relating to our experiencing of language. In this tour, we will examine the roles of voice, context, scale, appropriation, and how language is ultimately transformed in each artist’s practice. *>>>Tickets are FREE and open to ALL. Please feel free to share. * https://www.eventbrite.com/e/140930253181 Looking forward to some facetime with you at 7PM EST. All the very best, Matt www.considering.art *** *About Us.* Oh, Hi. [MCN-L] The Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) announces the 2021 Spring Professional Development Grant Recipients
MARCH 1, 2021 The Board of Directors of the Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) is pleased to announce the Spring 2021 VRAF Professional Development Grant in the amount of $500 to Brian Watson, a Doctoral Student at the University of British Columbia’s School of Information, and $500 to Steffi Terasaki, the Curatorial Assistant/Assistant Registrar at the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle. Brian Watson plans to use the funds towards a Certificate<https://libraryjuiceacademy.com/certificate/xml-and-rdf-based-systems/> in XML and RDF from the Library Juice Academy. These languages are necessary to build compatibility between Homosaurus<https://homosaurus.org/>—an international, community-maintained LGBTQ linked data vocabulary system intended to function as a companion to broad subject term vocabularies, such as the Getty or LCSH—and other major thesauri used in GLAMS cataloguing. After completing the certificate, Brian plans to finish a complete mapping of Homosaurus to LCSH and Getty, as well as expand the number of terms in Homosaurus specifically connected to visual resource description. This work would allow the vocabularies used in the GLAMS sector to more ethically and inclusively represent intersectionality in their holdings, which would have the additional benefit of making intersectional identities more visible within cultural heritage institutions. Steffi Terasaki wishes to gain a foundational knowledge in digital visual resource management, including born digital material; become an active participant in the museum and archives community around digital asset management in order to learn from/collaborate with her colleagues; and gain hands-on experience with managing a project through workshops. To accomplish these goals, Steffi will use the grant funds to attend: the Society of American Archivists Basics of Managing Digital Collections Online course<https://www2.archivists.org/prof-education/course-catalog/basics-of-managing-digital-records>, the 2021 Visual Resource Association conference<http://vraweb.org/2021-chicago/>, and the Summer Educational Institute for Digital Stewardship of Visual Information<https://seiworkshop.org/>. The VRAF Professional Development Grant Program reflects the broad mission of the VRAF to support professional development in the field of visual resources and visual information management. The grant can be used to participate in a professional development opportunity of the grantee’s choosing (such as a conference, symposium, workshop, online education), or to enroll in relevant research activities (such as hands-on field work or a site visit for scholarly purposes). [MCN-L] Dreaming of a New Collections Management System: Episode 3 Recording
Many thanks to those who were able to attend the third episode of our webinar series Dreaming of a New Collections Management System (CMS), and an even greater thank you to our wonderful panelists (Dan Brennan, Dr. Steen Dupont, Richard Light, and Jack Ludden) for sharing their time and experiences with us this week. We had another fascinating conversation covering technical challenges in current CMS. Some of the challenges we discussed included how a CMS fits in a museum’s technical ecosystem, discoverability in a CMS, mapping data in and out of a CMS, and data validation. For those who were unable to attend the live discussion, but would like to view the recording, we have now posted the video on our Youtube Channel <https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNXjDskOT1gYZucgmUvXf_Q>. You may access the video directly at the following link: https://youtu.be/mXruV_PqzD4. We would also like to announce that we are looking for participants in our next webinar which will focus on DEAI challenges in managing collections data and collections management systems. If you are interested in participating in this panel, please reach out to us at ak...@bpoc.org. [MCN-L] Submit Your Project For The 2021 GLAMi Awards
***Submit Your Application For The 2021 GLAMi Awards*** The GLAMi Awards (formerly Best of the Web) recognize and celebrate the most innovative digital projects in the cultural heritage sector each year. https://mw21.museweb.net/glami-awards/ Applications are now open for the 2021 awards. Submit your projects for consideration by March 19. We have made a key change to the eligibility rules for this year: any project, regardless of its initial launch date, is eligible for consideration if it was in active use between March 2020 and March 2021. We’ve made this change to recognize the fact that some of the most interesting work undertaken by museums this year involved repackaging or promoting previously moribund content from the institutional archives. Submission Link: https://mw21.museweb.net/glami-submission/ We have also made a number of changes to the Awards categories and format this year. Some of these changes are responses to suggestions made by jurors and participants in years past; others arise from an acknowledgment of the unique challenges of 2020. All of the changes have been made with the idea that the GLAMi program is at its best when it recognizes projects that address the most pressing issues faced by our staff and our audiences and that offer solution that are instructive and transferable to organizations of all sizes and types. If you are planning to enter a project or projects this year, please read the guidelines for submission carefully, and feel free to contact the Awards co-chairs, Heather Hart and Susan Chun, with any questions. This year’s categories are: --Interactive and Immersive. These projects connect with audiences that want to DO something. The category includes in-gallery and online interactives, multimedia installations (including soundscapes and videos), VR/AR, mobile applications, audio tours, and broadcasts (including those on social media platforms). --Resources for General Audiences and Families. The category features digital content for adults and children, including teachers, families, classes, and independent visitors. Examples include exhibition microsites, teacher resources, lesson plans, plan-ahead and post-visit content. --Resources for Scholars and Researchers. The category features digital content intended for study and research, including collections online, digital publications, and a primary source and archival content. Materials prepared for aggregation in networked resources may be considered in this category. --Marketing and Promotion. Materials and projects developed primarily to familiarize audiences, press, and donors with an organization’s programs and activities should be submitted in this category. Examples include social media campaigns, digital advertising campaigns, online press resources, annual reports, and fundraising campaigns. --Tools and Professional Practices. This category returns after a brief hiatus. Projects in this category serve staff and the community at large using hardware, software, and other digital tools to enable more effective, efficient, or far-reaching practices. Examples include business and content systems, infrastructure, databases, and communications systems. --Design. A special category for exemplary design intended for new or redesigned websites, apps, and multimedia resources. Judges will consider a project’s graphic design, UX design, and accessibility. Organizations may submit their projects for consideration in one or more of these six categories. Winners will be announced in a plenary session at 4pm central time on April 16, 2021. In addition to the six main categories, a Special Jury will consider projects—including any submitted in the six main categories—for special awards that recognize innovative and effective solutions to real-time concerns facing museums and their audiences. This year’s awards will focus on social justice issues and on outreach by organizations to audiences affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Special Jury prizes may recognize an entire project or site, or one small aspect of an organization’s digital presence; these prizes are focused on impact and innovation.
