Rare? They are the typical 15" wheels that came after the venerable

"Bundt Cake Wheels". IIRC the 124 wheels of that era may be hard to
come by and better looking in my opinion.
I went past a place in Harlem last week that sells any used wheel

Mark,

Here's a photo of the real tools:

http://www.w124performance.com/images/tools/OM60x_serp_belt_tools.jpg

Cost of the tool via Rusty should be under $100. I recommend buying
the tool if you intend to own OM60x engines for any length of time.
Otherwise, some people say you can slip a small Allen wrench into a
hole in the pulley, and brace it against a rib on the water pump. I've
not done this myself but others claim it works OK... just don't break
the water pump. With the stubby hex socket and spinner tool shown in
the photo above, the fan can be pulled out without removing the
radiator.

:-)

Larry,

Here's a spreadsheet with performance data (from sales brochures and
TDM's) for most all 124's, plus some assorted 123, 126, 140, and 201
data:

http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/other/acceleration_specs.xls

Spec for your car is 12.8 seconds.

That is what my car has on it now, and I would like to upgrade to the 8

I'm glad this crap isn't too popular around here. NY State has the

it has reached epidemic proportions.
These ads are not for the weak at heart but seem to drive the point
home. My hat is off to Thomas Seibel for his efforts to stem meth

Hey Luther, I was wondering about that. I know I read on the list where
someone lubed it. I think someone said they poured a few drops of ATF down
there. I may follow your recommendation of the Marvel oil though.

Question is:

You say squirt the oil "into the column lock". Forgive my ignorance, but
where exactly are you referring to the oil being squirted?

The column lock is an item located inside the steering column, no? Which
would mean I must disassemble the column partially to do this lubing? OR are
you saying that the oil should be squirted into the area that the tumbler
plugs into?

Thanks!

Me too, Earth City, MO. You're near Chicago, right? CACH?

Standard-sized, boxed packages are thrown onto converyor belts which
ferry them through the hub, where all sorts of bad things can happen in
the event of a jam. Upon reaching the loading dock, they may be loaded
on the top or the bottom of the trailer, where they may or not be
crushed, depending on luck and packaging quality. Irreg items (big,
unboxed, or over 70 lbs) are carried through the hub on a cart where
they won't be smashed or thrown about. They're the last thing loaded in
the trailer and are never stacked, so you really are safer shipping
unboxed. This is all academic, though, as a rear hatch is big enough
that it qualifies as an irreg whether boxed or not.

The VIN number is a US VIN number. I expect it was built to US specs for
European delivery - VERY common thru the mid '80. Many/most gray market
cars had to have the speedometer and the headlights converted to US
standards in the early/mid '80s to be legally imported so that doesn't
help. The car appears to have precisely the equipment that a US car came

There is a little additional noise, little consequence in performance

little tight, cold engine starting is compromised or even prevented.
It's important that valves be checked and adjusted before freezing

And I was under the impression that the 2.5 turbo can kill it
in 200-300kmi. This one has 296k on the clock. Probably just
worn out. Maybe Johnny B wants another 190D after his wife
claims the 2.0?

The 722 series transmissions wear every time they shift and hardly wear
at all while in gear running. So to minimize transmission wear, minimize
shifting. During the 10 years I was driving from Pittsburgh to
Washington DC and back weekly, I counted the number of shifts that my
300TD made on the trip and the number of shifts that my 190Ds (with
automatics) made. The 190D shifted not quite twice as often. Around town
the number of shifts was much closer to the same.

That corresponds with the average life of the a 722.4 transmission in a
201 vs a 722.3 transmission in a 123/124/126. In city driving, both
transmissions give similar life (150-200kmi), but in highway service,
the average 722.3 transmission will last quite a bit longer (all other
things being equal). I believe that the BIGGEST factor is engine power.
The more powerful engines allow the transmission to last longer by
allowing the engine to propel the car satisfactorily with many fewer shifts!

I was under the understanding that the 722.4 was more or less
immune from the B2 affliction that pestered earlier 722.3s.

The B-2 piston shattering was unique to the 722.3 transmissions, but the
722.4 B-2 pistons or bands CAN fail and the resulting symptom is
exactly the same. They don't fail nearly as often because the parts were
redesigned (just as the revised, replacement 722.3 parts were).

2006-03-30 Thread Curt Raymond
Larry,

I mostly agree with you. I've spent the better part of a month slowly
defunking my '85 190D. Considering the overall neglect I've seen throughout the
car the grunge doesn't really surprise me. I need to schedule a trip to get
detailed (courtesy a gift cert from my in-laws). A real steam cleaner would be
just the ticket for removing the grunge thats pushed into the carpets, I got
the upper layer of slime off.

As a side note the coffee sachet I mentioned the other day has done its job
admirably. I'd used some glue inside the car and the smell was hanging around
bad, since putting in the coffee last week (about 2oz of coffee in a little
packet I made from a papertowel folded over) its pretty much gone.

That said when I was a teenager I'd spend countless hours cleaning and
meticulously detailing the inside of my '84 Ford Tempo. The interior of that
car was sweet. There wasn't any surface rust either but a bunch of places with
paint that was only vaugely the right color. The floor was rotted to bits
though. Every year I'd peel back the carpets and fiberglass up the holes. Then
jack the car up and use sheetmetal screws to attach stovepipe (cheap and
available) so it'd pass Maine state inspection.

I am always amazed at people who take photos of their stuff that's for
sale
but fail to clean it up - trash on the floor and in the console, etc --
stuff that would only take a few minutes to do but would make a big
difference in presentation. A clean vehicle says (to me at least) that
they
made an effort to take care of the car - and keeping it clean is very
low/no
cost.

Oh well, perhaps I'm too picky?

Most budget rebuilds (no matter what the warranty) have been cleaned,
painted and BROKEN parts have been replaced - no more than that. If the
bearings have not failed, they are almost NEVER replaced. If the old
solenoid operated, it will often NOT be replaced. If you are selling the
car, it's an inexpensive way to get it going. If you'd like a modicum of
reliability, DO NOT BUY A BUDGET alternator or starter

[MBZ] best way to get pepto out of tranny

Fixing to swap out the radiator on my 190D and then need to get the
pepto out of the tranny. My thinking is I will drain the pan and
converter, fill back up with fresh fluid, , run it for a little bit.
Drain pan and repeat until fluid is good. Then pull pan and change the
filter. Anybody got any other ideas?

Brian, you need to lube the column lock. I had the exact same issue with my CD

~Update on my tumbler saga: After having the dealership try to ship the

By themselves, none. But they do allow you to jack up the fuel

There's a fellow on mercedesshop, I believe the name is Brent, who made an
air/water IC for his 617. This allowed the IC to be conveniently situated
near the turbo and intake manifold. Very good for brief bursts of power,
an IC full of cool water takes a few seconds to warm up.

Yes, clearance is the reason they are shaped like that. I use the
Hazet set, made specifically for the purpose. They cost somewhere in
the $50+ range when I bought them many, many moons ago. They paid for
themselves with their first use and made me $$ with subsequent valve
adjustments.
Properly made wrenches can keep you from rounding the adjusters and

figured in. YMMV

Interesting note on the hazards: When I switch them on, only the right

I guess that is why the dealer asked me today "was your 90's wagon a
euro or Japanese model?"
but don't they drive on the left side of the road? Then again we do
see various benz around here imported from Asia,

and those do have the steering wheel on the left.

On the topic of reman. starters: I know that getting one from a McParts is
frowned upon, but I must admit I got one from AutoJoke with a lifetime
warranty. The thing that I noticed tonight is that the solenoid has the name
Bosch stamped on it, and the main starter body has made in Germany, or some
such on it. So it appears to be a rebuilt original equipment unit.

I thought that the much sought after Bosch solenoids could only be found at
the pick & pull.

Re: [MBZ] New tumbler is different

2006-03-30 Thread Zoltan Finks
Update on my tumbler saga: After having the dealership try to ship the
correct tumbler replacement to a wrong address, I re-gave them the correct
address, and I finally saw it tonight. It looked right this time, I popped
it in in 10 seconds, and it is a fit!

Here's the beauty: It came with a key! The incorrect one they sent me at
first did not come with a key, and as some of you may recall, I was quite
puzzled over that.

Here's the problem: The problem was NOT the tumbler. I was quickly able to
get the column to lock me out after installing the new tumbler. Fortunately
my patented "kicking, turning, and twisting" technique got it unsiezed
before too long.

Oh well, at least I have two new dealer-cut keys now.

But I still have to jump through a hoop to ensure no lock-outs. This
consists of: When I arrive at my destination, I find the mid-point in the
slop of the wheel and hold it there. Then I - in a split second - turn that
key back to the zero position and back to position one, thereby satisfying
the requirement that it be completely turned off before allowing starter
engagement again. I then leave it in position one - ready for the next start
- and lock the doors. (or if in a bad neighborhood, go ahead and remove
tumbler).

Re: [MBZ] Turn Signals Out

2006-03-30 Thread Zoltan Finks
Very pleasant news this evening! The signals started working great! It
didn't take many flicks of the hazard switch to affect a change. What a
great feeling to have them working again for no money and no work! (my kind
of repair). Thanks for the reminder that operating the hazard switch can
affect it.

Interesting note on the hazards: When I switch them on, only the right side
blinks (F and R). The way to get all four going at once is to switch the
hazards on, then turn the L side turn signals on.

The bent wrenches are totally unnecessary. Valve adjustments are easy to do
with standard open end wrenches, just use a good light so you can see exactly
where to place them. The only thing you might consider is file or grind one
down to make it a tad thinner to grab the lower nut.

Don't get Clay started on P-N-P's and parts removal with crowbars/hammers...
Or the minorities that use them

AAAaackk! That's a fear of mine. My late Dobie was reliable (could leave a
fresh biscuit on the dash and leave him in the car for hours (at night -
temperate weather) and it would be untouched when I'd come back. But I have
a maniac of a 1 year old now. Whole new ball game. Sorry to hear about your
console!

Re: [MBZ] /8

2006-03-30 Thread Dimitri Seretakis

The Chev is now a valuable collector car. The
/8s ain't.

Don't know about that. According to Mercedes Classic Magazine (? issue 2 yrs
ago), the /8 is achieving collector status, at least in Germany. The car was a
mundane model and therefore accessible to middle class folk. The car is
therefore dear in the the hearts of many 30 year olds like myself who grew up
with these cars.

My understanding is it's better to have them on the loose side if your
having problems getting it just right vs. tight. Is this right?

I never used the "official " wrenches. I have never even seen them, other
than in pictures. I have always used just plain open end (combination)
14mm wrenches. You need one that is thin. Lately I have been using a
cheap combination wrench that has been ground to make the jaws thinner, for
the bottom nut. I have never needed a big wrench. YOu need to watch the
spring cap (where the big wrench goes) to be sure you compensate if it
turns. Most of the time, if the valve is closed as it must be to adjust,
the valve cap will not turn. There is an art to knowing where to set the
top nut so when you tighten it and the lock nut together, the gap is
right. Don't expect to get it right the first time. You may have to do
some valves many times before you gat that particular one right. when you
think you have them all right, turn the crank over and check each pair
again as they come up. (You will notice that 2 cam lobes will be pointing
more or less up at the same time, one intake and one exhaust) When you
can do this repeatedly and get the same reading, then you are ok.

I used to have an old S wrench that was 1/2 x 9/16 open end. If worked
perfectly to fit around the cam towers and injectors to hold the lock
nut. The ground down cheapo 14 mm is its replacement.

You also need to get the feel of how to use feeler gauges. it is right
when the proper thickness gauge can slide in the gap, but there is a
noticeable resistance. If you have to force it in, you are too tight. If
it has no resistance, the valve is too loose. There are also go-no-go
feeler gauges. These have two thicknesses on each blade. My set was from
Snears. The thick part was .002 inch thicker than the thin part. I will
often work with two blades out, one at the setting I want, and the other
.001" thicker. I want the first to go and the second not to go in. It
isn't necessary, but it is a way to check your work as you go. I believe
in being verdamt sure the valves are right before i put the cover back
on. I have never burned a valve from misadjustment in 30+ years.

Tch??!

Re: [MBZ] Water injection on OM603 - update

2006-03-30 Thread Dave M.
By themselves, none. But they do allow you to jack up the fuel
delivery (relatively) safely, without destroying the motor. Seems most
stock Bosch pumps can't deliver more than, say, 20-25% power gain over
stock, without modifying the pump via larger elements. So on an OM603,
that should take us from 148hp (stock) to something around 170-180hp
with stock pump, exhaust, and turbo. If you're willing to change the
intake, exhast, and send the pump to Myna Diesel, the sky is the
limt... the Finns have dyno charts showing 450hp from a stock
long-block 603.

That's not encouraging.

I just sent him a message letting him know that his car is not grey
market and that the 300SD was a US only model.

It could well have been a European-delivery US model. Didn't
DBAG offer that around then?
