gentle wiggling back and forth along with pb blaster got them out. I can see

Yes, cheap cheap modem, does have a 'custom' mode for the firewall which allows

[MBZ] Stainless Steel Brake Lines

2015-06-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Would be interested to hear anyone’s direct experience with using SS brake
lines versus the stock rubber lines, and what exactly the difference was.

The S500 needs brake lines, so I found a set of stainless lines made by
Goodridge and ordered them tonight. About the same price as OE lines from the
dealer from the looks of things.

It’s my understanding that SS lines give a much firmer pedal than rubber lines.
If I find this to be the case, I’ll definitely replace the lines on the SL500,
as it’s always had sort of a soft pedal. Lots of people in the R129 forum on
BW have reported this as well.

What you say is not true. I don't know if it ever was, but it definitely
is not now.

In fact, the opposite is true. The latest revision of the "Interstate
Truck Driver's Guide to Hours of Service," was published by the Federal
Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in February 2013 to help
explain their regulations. On page two, it discusses "Personal Use of a
Commercial Motor Vehicle" saying,

It is possible that occasionally you may not use a truck
in commerce at all. You may be moving your personal
belongings to a new house or, as a hobby, you may be taking
your horses to a horse show. As long as the activity is not
in support of a business, the Federal hours-of-service
regulations do not apply to you.

If you are not operating your truck in commerce, you are
not subject to the hours-of-service regulations.

The hours-of-service regulations do not apply to anyone using a personal
vehicle, even if he has a CDL. Reading 49 CFR Part 395 would be very
helpful in correcting your mistaken ideas.

[MBZ] I killed it Jim! Then, fix it Bones!

2015-06-29 Thread clay via Mercedes
The 300d (76) has been sitting for a while. I seem to have killed the
connection from the key to the starter. The glow circuit seems to work, the
key turns and lights up the dash bulbs as normal, but when I turn the key to
engage the starter, Nothing.

I have been removing wires from the door and other non-essential(?) items.
Thinks like AC and window, sun roof. The window wiring went out the firewall
to a box (passenger side) that had fuses and wiring block, but also an
ancillary pig tail that went under the fuse to a relay? with four wires. A
heavy red, a heavy black and standard ground (brown) and another wire. I was
messing with this bunch just prior to the no start.

What I need to do is divest as much as I can from the key and put it all on
dash switches. I need a kill switch, glow, ignition, start, and want the
lights divorced from the spin dial. Any tips?

[MBZ] OT Firewalls

2015-06-29 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I finally fixed an email problem which has been bugging our household for a
couple of months. We've been able to receive email on our email client -
home computer, but couldn't send most of the time. Email worked fine from
our smart phones.

I called AT&T tech support (second call in a few weeks) and we spent about
30 minutes making sure I knew how to enter my username and password and
setup the right email servers and ports and such, and the lady said the
next two steps were to temporarily shut off my computer firewall and then
delete and reload MS Outlook.

Firewall!

Checked the DSL modem / wireless router settings, shonuff the required port
for sending was blocked. Shut off the firewall, can send just fine...

Re: [MBZ] OT Circuit Board Repair

2015-06-29 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
Some time ago several on the list suggested solvents for removing the coating
on the boards in the climate control units in 123s. However, don't remember who
they were at the moment or which solvents they suggested.
Surface mounted components that have leads of adequate length can be snipped
close to the old component and the new components leads can then be soldered to
the old lead without heating the board providing that there is enough room to
use pointed heat sink clips on the old leads next to the board. I use surgical
misquito forceps if there is room because they are heavier and absorb more heat.

Something in that environment is probably conformally coated, meaning in order
to desolder any components you have to burn through the conformal coating.

When you burn through the conformal coating, you usually need enough heat that
it damages the board and causes the foil to delaminate. Not to mention the
possible thermal damage to any components nearby.

Re: [MBZ] San Antonio hotel

2015-06-29 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
That reminds me of staying in a hotel in Las Vegas NM one night when on
our way from Houston to Taos we got stuck by a snowstorm with 2 kids and
2 poodles who did not really get along (dogs and chirruns) so we had to
get 2 rooms and eat in shifts to keep all the individuals happy.
Anyway, it was a cool old hotel, from back in the 1800s. Flash forward
some years, I am watching the movie No Country for Old Men and there is
a scene where they are sitting in an old hotel having a conversation,
and I think "That looks familiar" and it was that very hotel lobby.

If anyone is ever in Austin, there is a neat old hotel there called the
Driscoll.

Somehow a dog with one ear up and one ear down evokes a positive response, while
the owner probably spent a bunch of time when it was a puppy either trying to
make them both stand up with paper cups or trying to make them go down with
bubble gum. Given the environment, I suspect the owner of this one couldn't care
less.

There are some choice interior parts there, incredibly choice considering it's
Dallas.
If it were within driving distance, I'd like to find a W116 with seats like
that.

Mitch.

[MBZ] cdl or not

2015-06-29 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

i know a fair bit about the DOT

it'squite complicated, sort of like the FAA (the dot is not happy until you
are not happy)

to drive my isuzu npr (about 12,000 gross) i have to have a dot number and a
dot program

i have to have a dot medical (like the faa) every 2 years …. $45 at a
chiropractor (who actually did a thorough job and checked everything)

only fluid taken was urine checked for diabetes

but since i am under 26,500 or whatever the max non CDL is, i do not have to
have a drug program (no testing) and i can drive on a car license

i have to keep logs etc and i have 3 notebooks of BS (mostly printed out forms
from the dot site and manuals)

i have to do annual and driver inspections etc

i just make sure i am in order when i go out on the interstates and have to go
to weigh stations

all this is for just me driving one truck

and it does't matter if i claim i am driving NOT for business … it all still
applies

there are some farm exemptions and for carrying BEES

i have to pay an interstate tax or something of $75 per year

i had a dot guy come and do a safety inspection (at my office) … that means
look at my paperwork

he was a nice good old boy and gave me a gold star …. he said it was pretty
perfect

It took me probably 20 hours to get it all together and looking right

i used to have a CDL when it was a class 5 or something in georgia but never
used it, so let it lapse

i'm actually thinking about getting an RV and towing machines behind that and
dot would probably not bother me

i am not subject to the DOT regs when driving a car or motorcycle etc
thanks,

xx rick
