I have driven the entire length of both I-5 and I-84 here in Oregon
at 75mph without being passed once. Since you will get a $500 ticket
within minutes for going 24mph over the speed limit, I rarely see
people driving that fast. I have driven in almost every state in the
country, and WA-OR seem to be the worst for speeding tickets. I don't
have any problem with keeping up with traffic in my 240d.

In Nevada however, people do get away with going that fast.

I wonder if it could be replaced with the 80s GMC/80s Volvo 740 Squirrel
cage fan mounted facing inward on the engine bay side of the firewall. It
would require cutting a hole in the firewall from the outside, and a
little bit of thin sheet metal work, but would result in an order of
magnitude more airflow, and 5 minute blower fan replacement in the future.
These fans cost $30 and come with a 2 year warranty from Napa auto parts.
I would much rather see people mutilating their W115s to fix a faulty
factory design, then scrapping them for newer cars.

Tyler

If you can crawl up in the place the blower services, a few large
computer fans with the neon lights would work. I thought about it, but
decided it was easier to just replace the thing.

I think the Smartcar wouldn't be as dangerous as a motorcycle or
bicycle. For one thing, when you see one in person, you realize that
they're quite tall. Unlike some older small cars, which had low
rooflines, the Smart is easily visible in mixed traffic. Secondly, it
reportedly has quite a strong safety cage around the passenger cabin,
which should help prevent injuries in low-speed, in-town sorts of
accidents. In higher speed collisions the lack of mass and the lack of
available space for crush zones would be more of a liability.

I think the biggest problem is they're just plain expensive. At $30,000
it's priced way out of the normal economy car segment. You could, for
example, buy two Honda Fits for that price -- each of which would carry

The tricky thing about squirrel cage fans is they usually need a
volute-shaped housing to get any real efficiency out of them. You can't
just hang them in an open space and expect good results.

W, I grant you only a nutbar would want to see all of Route 66 in

sales-wise here. They literally had to ramp up production destined for the
Canadian market. It is selling like wildfire in Montreal, not sure about
Toronto, and the dealers in my area (a smaller urban market, under 1 m
population) are quite happy too (though it took a lot longer to catch on
here).

Also sales of the other new small cars (Versa, Yaris, the small Suzuki) are
extremely good. It almost seems like half the market has jumped into smaller
cars while the other is hugging its SUVs. Our government is, or was,
considering relaxing some safety standards enough to allow other 'micro'
cars (VW Lupo and the extreme small cars on sale in the Japanese market) to
come in here as well. Anyway, put a Smart next to a Yaris and frankly I
don't see a massive difference when it comes to highway driving in one.

Re: [MBZ] DaimlerCrysler's latest blunder

2006-11-07 Thread John M McIntosh
LIkely the price you see is for the current DOT approved importers,
say $15K for the car, $1K to alter to DOT standards/etc, 14K extra
profit to cover DOT paperwork/bribes/politics/scandals/lawsuits/etc.
Up in Canada we avoid the extra $15K of price gouging by buying from
mercedes/smart directly, and the cost for mercedes to meet Canada
Transport Standards isn't an extra 15K... From what I've read that
includes adding side reflector markers, altering the headlamp/fog
lamps since the fog lamps are a few fractions of an inch too close so
they can't be fog lamps, and some metal/welding in the door to
improve the side impact rating.

PS find instructions on the internet to revert lamps back to euro
spec... and I note base price of smart in canada is under $15K usa.
Although most people I know have ones that run upwards of 22K or so,
however they tell me have you looked at the price of B class, with a
little clicking on the options you can achieve pricing over $55K! So
22K is well, not much...

Hmm. I did a web search and that's what I came up with for the MSRP.
Maybe they're selling at a significant discount.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Oregon Speed Limits (was DaimlerCrysler's latest blunder)

2006-11-07 Thread Tyler Backman

The freeway speed limit in oregon is 65mph maximum, and 55mph near
cities/urban areas. I live in oregon, drive a lot of miles each year,
and get pulled over very quickly if I exceed the speed limit. I have
been pulled over (warning, no ticket) for going 64mph in a 55 zone
with the speed of traffic. There are many areas that are continuously
monitored speed traps (such as I-84 in hood river county, or I-5 in
Salem), and they will pull almost everyone over who goes 10mph over
the speed limit. I think there are very few state cops, because the
highways are almost entirely patrolled by county cops which are very
abundant. Small communities seem to use traffic tickets as a major
revenue source for their government. Washington is much worse in this
regard then Oregon. In Pacific, WA and Pomeroy WA you will get pulled
over and ticketed for doing 2mph over the limit, and the fines are
excessive compared to other states.

I have never been pulled over for speeding in any of my diesel
vehicles, but my gasoline volvo 740 turbo is another story :-

I am genuinely surprised that you found Oregon drivers to drive fast,
since I have been surprised by much faster people drive in most of
the other states I have driven in (especially Nevada, California, and
the midwest).

I've noticed that consumer reports bases their reliability data on
average cost of maintenance over the first few years, and their
safety data on cost of repairs for minor accidents. I think these are
both fundamentally flawed because a car that is expensive to maintain
can still have fewer breakdowns and last longer before it is
completely worn out than a car that has cheap maintenance
requirements. As for safety, I personally am more concerned about how
much damage will be done to me, rather than to my vehicle in the
result of an accident. Who cares if the airbags cost twice as much to
replace, if they are more effective at saving your life or preventing
serious injury? Basically, they will say that a cheap american car is
safer and more reliable than a high end european car, while the
european car will provide much better protection to it's passengers
in a crash, and still be on the road decades after the american car
is worn out.

The issue is that the original blower is a flat unit bolted against the
firewall and then the rest of the climate control is bolted up behind it.
You have to drop the entire climate control system to get to the blower

OK - I can't say I have looked that closely but if it is so difficult to get
to the blower motor assembly on these
cars, is it not possible to come up with some sort of retrofit setup? Cut a
hole and mount a blower in place of the
radio - who knows but why give up on a car just because the blower is hard
to get to?

Check out how hard it is to do a 97-03 Ford F150. The engineers have not

Really quite a deal, that. I've seen that very unit auctioned on
eBay for about $70, I bought mine for $18 and used it exactly once
so far, on the Albatross. Worked perfectly well and proved that it
did not have particularly low compression.

I've noticed that consumer reports bases their reliability data on
average cost of maintenance over the first few years, and their
safety data on cost of repairs for minor accidents. I think these are

completely worn out than a car that has cheap maintenance

Yes, and further the whole concept of crash testing in North America --

I recently spent some time at the site for the European crash test
authority, which does dynamic testing (offset impacts where both the test
vehicle and the target are moving, with variable angles of impact) and some
of the results were horrifying... for cars that get four or five stars here.

2006-11-07 Thread R A Bennell
I would agree totally. No reason to scrap a car just because it is difficult to
repair something of this nature.
The vehicle is old enough to be relatively simple compared to many today with
computer controlled doodads. It would
not be mutilating the vehicle if it was done well. Think of it more as an
upgrade to something that was not quite
up to spec at the outset.

Yup...a lot of times with one bad plug, the engine will start, but idle
slow and rough because the cylinder with the bad plug is misfiring. As
the engine warms up a little bit the cylinder with the dead plug will
eventually follow along. Often during the time when it's misfiring
you'll see white smoke (actually unburned diesel mist) from the exhaust.

Low compression on one cylinder can also cause this, but a bad plug is
much more likely.

The easiest way is to remove the black plastic cover on the fender and
disconnect the plug that connects the glow plug wiring harness to the
relay. Now select the ohms function on your meter, ground one lead to
the engine block or battery negative terminal, and probe each pin on the
plug with the other lead. You should read a low resistance for each
one. (I forget the exact value, and the resistance of the test leads
enters into it, but they should all be roughly equal.) If one comes up
infinite, or with a very high resistance, either that plug is bad or
it's become disconnected somehow.

Good to know. Anyone measuring that should bear in mind that cheap
multimeter test leads often add 2 or 3 ohms all on their own. Low
resistance values are very hard to measure. (This is why the most
accurate way to test glow plugs is with an ammeter.)

a Diesel Engine Compression Tester - $18 - I'll probably buy one of

a Fuel Injection Pump Pressure Tester for $8 - at this price I gotta buy
one
even if I only use it once.

Lots of other stuff also - but this caught my eye -

Have you checked the price of a MB rebuilt one? I think the wholesale

Not too bad. Price seems lower than a 240D with the same miles on it.
If it were nearby, I'd take a look at it. I bet it's almost as fast as
a non-turbo LeSharo. ;-)

Better yet, buy that rig and keep your eyes open for a wrecked car with a
turbo 617 in it. Then you could hold 4th gear on hills.

Wholesale price on just the transmission from Mercedes is $2290.00.
Retail is $2550.00. Then the converter is $810.00 wholesale and $1010.00
retail. Seems a better deal to buy my complete unit for $1595.00.
