1985 300TD has high pressure in the radiator tank even when cold. Runs low on coolant, but only about twice a year, no visible leak. Mileage has decreased from 26 - 21mpg, no detectable loss of power. Performed coolant chemical test for leak, which was negative. Is this the head gasket?

I have adjusted the valves. I set the intakes for 0.005 instead of 0.004 because I didn't have the proper feeler gauge. None of them were particularly tight. It still idles rougher cold than I would like. The car seems to make good power even with a bit of blowby. I wonder about the valve guides.

No the skidplate is has not arrived yet. It basically sounds like tapping on a bell housing with a small hammer. Worse when the car is cold and pointing downhill. Almost certainly coming from the torque converter or immediately adjacent within the housing. I will see if I can shoot a video.

The fuses are not good just because they look good on the part that burns through. My wipers kept crapping out on me recently. I greased all the fuse ends, which worked for a bit, then I would simply rotate the offending fuse in its holder whenever the wipers quit, which also worked temporarily

Ok so I have rough idle, knock loudest after start but now I can still hear it after motor warmed up, instant start, decent power, rebuilt injectors, compression of 290 in #4 and 390 in the others. Seems like a bad valve guide as I can hear air leak near #4 at the head when turning it by hand.
