Craig,
I have a Big Red Van as well. 1990 Chevy G20 Beauville. It pretty worn out
inside, clearcaot is gone and its end pretty beat up. The running gear and
engine are in excellent condition. Are you selling yours?
If so, where are you located. I maybe interested.

Re: [MBZ] 1983 240D Lower Ball Joint

2019-03-09 Thread Mike Esh via Mercedes
Thanks Floyd! I got the drivers side apart and used a little heat from a MAPS
torch and several swings of the hammer and it is out. I will order the
Lemorder ball joints today.

While going through my parts drawer I came across a new engine mount which
prompted me to look at the ones in the car. I noticed the ones in the car
looked clean and new but appear to be flattened out. There is no oil or
anything on either one of them. The new mount that is out of the car sits up at
least 3/4 of an inch higher than the ones installed in the car. And the engine
acts like it needs new mounts as there is what sounds like metal to metal noise
and vibration when the car is lower idle speeds. The noise goes away if I rev
the engine a little.
I’m guessing it is not normal for them to be that depressed after installation
and someone probably put in some cheaper brand when they replaced them. I
think I will go ahead replace those as well. Is Lemforder the correct brand of
engine mounts to go with?

[MBZ] Fwd: Monark nozzles - Update

2019-03-03 Thread Mike Esh via Mercedes
I installed the new Monark nozzles in the 85 300D. I did not follow the
Mercedes Source tutorial to carefully disassemble the injectors, boil each one,
meticulously clean and blow dry each one of the parts or sand the mating
surfaces. I believe I am what my wife calls a, “ready, fire, aim,” type
personality. My typical process is to get the job done and if it doesn’t work
out or turns out poorly, go back, read the instructions and then do it again.
Everything appears to have worked out well this time. I did keep all individual
injector parts together and processed each one separately. Pop tests on my
new $89.00 Pop Tester all came in a within 50 pounds of 2000 PSI. They were
with installed with new washers and return hoses and torqued to about 80
pounds. Engine performance seems to have improved, no leaks, idle is smoother
and hopefully, miles per gallon will improve. The old injectors were pretty
pitted and two of them had a poor spray pattern and one of those popped off at
about 500 PSI.

[MBZ] Fwd: Hearing test and leaking exhaust.

2019-02-21 Thread Mike Esh via Mercedes
I am having more and more trouble hearing people talk in regular conversation
and it gets even more difficult to hear if there is background noise. So I
downloaded an iPhone app and using my headphones I tested my hearing. Results
are below if anyone wants to see them. I completed the test several times with
different apps and the results were all similar. I am going to talk to my Doc
about it and investigate getting some type of help.
I imagine most of the folks on this list are young and in excellent health
however, if there are any old farts out there that could help me avoid some
pitfalls and share any good information or make any recommendations I would
appreciate it.
I talked to my sister about it and she told me she has her ears cleaned by a
specialist every year and it has improved her hearing. Does anyone have any
experience with that?

Benz Question. I am working on the 83 240D I bought a couple of months ago and
it sounds to me like it has an exhaust leak, but I cannot find any leaks. I am
listening to it from the front of the car, under the hood and comparing it to
my 1985 300D, and the 240 is definitely louder. I have carefully felt around
the exhaust manifold, the down pipe, and other connections and could not feel
any leaks or see any black residue. Is there a better way to determine where
it could be leaking? Are the 240D’s prone to leaky manifolds or are they just
typically louder the 300D? Any insight?

Thanks,
Mike

[MBZ] 1983 240D Parts -

2018-12-03 Thread Mike Esh via Mercedes
Does anyone want to sell any of the following. I am placing an order later
today for my newly acquired 1983 240D

Autohaus AZ wants almost $30.00 for a visor clip! Does anyone have a used one
they would like to part with or know where I can get a used one? I am checking
local junk yards. Any color will do.

Also looking for:
Gas/oil filler cap.
Yellow vacuum check valve for door lock system.
Hood Pad - with or without heat shield.
Center driveshaft support with bearing and bearing if not included.
Transmission filter and gasket - Autohaus has two listed, a Meyle and a Mann.
Mann is about $7.00 more and gasket must be ordered separately. Thoughts?
Clear fuel filter(s)
Canister fuel filter(s)

Update on condition - It is running well and going down the road straight and
true. Not stopping as well as it should.
Put new rubber brake lines on all 4 wheels and new pads on the front. The
front pads were soaked with what looked like brake fluid. installed new
caliper on left front. ( it was in the trunk) Did not see any leaks around
other calipers.
Working on vacuum system -
Brakes feel like vacuum assist is intermittent.
Shifting is erratic as well.
Discovered broken line to door locks. Will test drive after that is sorted out.
I’m sure more parts will be need as time goes on.
Mike

work done, remove.
Or just use a floor jack.

hauling it back on a tow dolly.
I will get the address if anyone is around and could take a look.

[MBZ] Austin TX trip

2018-05-01 Thread Mike Esh via Mercedes
Just got back from Austin, TX trip driving the 85 300D It performed flawlessly
and was a very comfortable and enjoyable trip. It took me about 23 hours each
way with a 3 hour nap in the middle. Interestingly my MPG was better on the
way down than on the way back. Probably due to a trailing wind on the way down
and a head wing on the way back. Also, I was driving an average of about 5
miles per hour faster on the way back.

Spent the week helping my daughter around the house and property. She is
leasing a 2.5 acre lot and is operating a Musicians Hostel. She has one home,
one studio, 3 small out buildings, 3 travel trailers, a large garden and about
a dozen chickens on the property. All of this in the north end of the city.
It is quite the setup! She has 4 long term guests as well as several others
that only stay a couple of days or a week at a time. Not something I would
enjoy, but to each their own.

This daughter is the one who loves the older Mercedes. She drove my hand me
downs over the years. A 1973 220D and a 1981 300TD. The 220 was crashed into
and rusted away. The 300TD rusted away and is currently donating
parts(including engine and transmission) to an 85 300TD that will be ready to
drive in a month or so. Her favorite and mine was the 220D. She is currently
driving a 1990 Chevy conversion van who’s body is showing its age. The engine
is the reliable 350 V8 with about 180,000 miles on and going strong.

Mike

[MBZ] Trio to Austin TX from Michigan

2018-04-18 Thread Mike Esh via Mercedes
I am driving from Kalamazoo, MI to visit my daughter at 5213 Jim Hogg, Austin
TX. (love that street name) I’m leaving this Friday and returning on or about
next Friday. I will be driving my 1985 300D. Does anyone in-between/on the
way (within reason) need anything picked up and delivered? It might be kinda
fun to swing by Kaleb”s Mercedes Ranch to see his collection and visit a bit.

I was considering driving a 2016 Hyundai Veloster that I was selling for a
friend. Thanks goodness we sold it. It only had 7000 miles on it and sold for
$11,000 to a dealer in Kalamazoo. The friend bought it for $20,500 then died
about 6 months afterwords. I delivered it Kzoo from my home in Whitehall, about
a 2 hour drive. It was a very uncomfortable ride. I just did not fit well in
the seat and it was difficult to get out of. I’m 61, 5’10 and weigh 220
pounds. It drives and handles very well. One odd thing is that the warrantee
from the new car does not transfer to the new owner. Each new owner must
purchase a new warrantee package if they want to. Is that normal? I have not
bought a new car since 2005.
Thanks,
Mike

[MBZ] Scam Bolts? Was Re: MB Canada

2018-04-09 Thread Mike Esh via Mercedes
No Benz content question.
2011 Subaru Outback - Cam bolts.
I brought my daughters car in for alignment after my indy replaced tie rod ends
(he can’t do alignments). Shop calls and says they can’t align it properly
because it doesn’t have any “cam bolts” and it needs new “cam bolts”. I asked
why and he says that it doesn’t have any because of the struts. I ask to talk
to the tech and he says the cam bolts are worn out and they can’t adjust the
slightly negative camber. I ask how much and they say 80.00 for parts and
labor plus the original cost of alignment I say, just adjust as close as you
can with existing “cam bolts”.
I honestly don’t know if it has/had cam bolts or not but it sure sounded like a
scam to me. Does anyone know for sure if this can be an issue?
Thanks,
Mike

[MBZ] Trashed my heater valve

2018-01-23 Thread Mike Esh via Mercedes

I'm still working on intermittent heat in 85 300D and ruined the monovalve

took it out to look at the insert for leaks I pulled the wires off the
transformer.  Does anyone have a extra used one laying around they want to get
rid of?  By the way the valve had no leaks in it.

[MBZ] New Heater Question was Re: Monovalve Static test out of the car?

2017-11-28 Thread Mike Esh via Mercedes

The heat in my 85 300D is difficult to regulate each time I start out.  If I
have the temp regulator set for anything other than all the way cold it blows
major heat until I rotate the regulator all the way to cold, then wait for it
to blow cold.  After doing that I can regulate temp pretty well although it
seems like the temp is set way to cold on the regulator.  Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Mike
p.s.  Sold the 84 300D vegoil vehicle and all equipment for $500.00. Original
price of vehicle was also $500.00.  It was not running well, very low power.
The rear cylinder compression was low.  After testing, I determined it was not
a valve issue.  Oil in the cylinder during the recheck and compression
returned.  So glad to have room in the garage again!  After all expenses I
think I saved over $5000.00 over the life of the vegoil project.

I removed the bolt but I could not remove the spring.  It looks like a ball

That is my thought. I believe the spring may have been weak enough to lower the
pressure in the pump to the point where the fuel wasn't filling the injector
pistons all the way especially the last ones in line. It may also have advanced
the timing some. In the injection pump on the GM 6.2 and 6.5 when the ignition
is turned to start a wire that goes to the injection pump pulls the relief
valve open which the manual says, if I remember correctly, drops the pressure
in the injection pump to 0, retarding the injection timing by I think 4 deg.
The normal pressure in there is about 10-12lbs. My thought is the same thing is
happening here even though the pumps are different the principle is probably
the same.

In any case the more even idle and the quieter engine under power as well as
the better response seem to point to that conclusion. Though I really need to
do that 2mm chain stretch test to see what my chain stretch actually is. The
quick and dirty method says around 4-5deg but that's not very precise.

Anyway even the manual recommends stretching the spring to 27mm if the pressure
is low. No I didn't check the pressure but given the age of the car I have
little doubt that it wasn't where it once was when new.

My next little project is to put an electric pressure gauge on the line between
the final filter and the pump to keep track of the pressure while driving. This
should tell me when my filter is getting to the point of needing a change.

The actual ball joints are cheap, good ones are only like $30 ea. The required labor is
not cheap. I think my last ones (for W126) were TRW and they are fine. Replacing them
requires removing all the brake stuff and then removing the steering knuckle, which
requires a couple cheap presses. Most folks beat out the old knuckle with a big hammer (4
lb min). Pressing in the new one requires a special press tool (like $300+) although
there is a cheaper and effectie "pipe-like" tool (available on ebay) that you
use with a 12-20 ton press. A few folks have reported success using a standard C-clamp
ball-joint kit but I'm skeptical that this would damage the new joint. I did the job
without using spring compressor (although I have one); the shock and wood block (under
the LCA) held the lower control arm while the knuckle was removed. But replacing most of
the other rubber (except upper control arm) will require a good spring compressor.

approaches hundreds of thousands of band files.

By increasing the band files size Time Machine doesn’t have to open these
massive numbers of files when backing up or restoring. This is especially
difficult if you’re backing up over a network share.

I can elaborate privately for anyone who is interested. It’s a fairly simple

[MBZ] 1985 300D - Intermittent glow light while driving

2015-06-25 Thread Mike Esh via Mercedes
Last night while driving home my glow light flickered on and off several times and then on my way to work this morning it came on several times while driving. At one point it stayed on solidly for more than a minute. Then it flickered a few more times and went out and did not come back the rest of the drive. I am concerned the glow plugs are coming on when not needed and will eventually burn themselves out. In addition to this issue the horn is only working intermittently and when I try to activate the horn (with the key on and the car not running)the dash lights dim as if it is trying to work. The only work I have done recently was to replace rear calipers, change out one heater to block hose and spray the underside of the car with undercoating. I checked and rotated all fuzes. All looked good. Any thoughts on what to look for?

Thanks,
Mike

That is the classic symptom of master cylinder failing.
Fluid getting past the main seals.

Often, if you move the pedal hard and fast it will still
"catch" and once there is pressure the seals usually seal. A
slow, gentle press will allow the pedal to sink to the floor.

I failed to find a kit. But I did not check with Classic
Center. And I have 123s, not 115s.

Oh yeah. *sigh*

Absolutely! If the coolant level is too low, it will not circulate into
the heater. No warm coolant = no heat! Low levels with some splashing in
some times = intermittent heat.

The engine will run normally even when the coolant is too low to circulate
in the heater.

Before testing anything else, fill the radiator!

Check the coolant regularly, and certainly before any long trip!

on April 5 and departing Austin on April 11. We will need to rent a
car. Does anyone know of any deals/favorable places to rent from.
Looking for something fun to drive and kinda sporty. There will be 8
of of us and we will have use of my old 1990 Chevy conversion van that
she took with her when she moved to Austin. She has been there for
about 2 years and loves it. Also, is there anything we "must do/see"
while we are there? Looking forward to having some fun and eating well.
Thanks in advance,

[MBZ] Off Topic - Reliable electric dimmer switch

2014-09-04 Thread Mike Esh via Mercedes
Does anyone have a source for a a good, long lasting, and reliable dimmer switch for my kitchen and bathroom lights. The kitchen needs to run 7 can light lights and the bathroom has twelve 40 watt globe lights. I have replaced both of them twice over the past couple of years because they begin buzzing, become erratic and and eventually not working at all.

In addition, can anyone make a recommendation on the type of light to use in my
kithscn that is long lasting, economical and delivers a nice quality light that
is not to harsh? Does anyone know of a website that could help? I currently
have a variety of incandescent, florescent and LED's.
