Oh hey, I didn't realize you were on Lake of the Woods.

I've been watching "The Canadian Angle" on the MeatEater YouTube channel. Lake

I knew a fellow who bought a new Lincoln Town Car around the early 70's
- not certain of exact year. It was one of the huge Lincolns. White,
with a white leather interior and a white vinyl top. Cannot recall if it
was the landau part vinyl or full top - also had the opera windows I
believe. A real land yacht but an absolutely beautiful car. It was
almost new when it got totalled. He was travelling through Wisconsin
sometime around late February or March when the spring thaw was in
progress and some rocks rolled down a hill onto the highway. He dodged
at least one but went over top of another. He nailed the rock with the
oil pan, transmission pan and the rear end. The insurance company wrote
it off. They were not prepared to replace the whole drive train.

His name was Floyd and he and his family had a cottage on the bay where
we are on Lake of the Woods. They had an early cottage and then built a
newer one some time around the early 1950's. My father helped build the
2nd one and did work for them on and off for many years, including
docks, boat houses etc.  They had a cottage there from some time in the
30's or maybe 40's but had never been there in winter. They wanted to
see it with snow so they drove up from Moline, Illinois and my father
took them in to the cottage by snow mobile. They were just there for
part of the day and then headed back south. They likely stayed over in
International Falls, Minnesota and then headed south again the next day.
This accident happened on their way home.

Poor old Floyd has been gone now for many years but we remember him and
his family fondly. He owned the Shetter Fude Furniture Store in Moline,
Illinois.

Well, being outside the 4yr/50Kmi warranty.at least they paid
something. How disappointing to have that happen though.

Looking back, any warning/symptoms before the chain let go? I think the
defective chain TSB only covers Jul '92 - Apr '94 built models.

http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/OM60X/OM60x_Timing_Chain_TSB.pdf

If an original 3.5L OM603 engine has made it 20yrs/150Kmi and currently
has no issues, I would think it's safe to assume it not a Rod bender.
Many did have issues though (usually just outside of the warranty, IIRC)
I'm not sure if a definite answer of why this was occurring has ever
been found out.

The only theory I know that explains the fact that #1 rod is almost always the
first to fail is head gasket failure and oil going into cylinder #1.

OM601/602/603 always tended to get head gasket leaks at the front, the larger
bore of the 350 seems to increase the likelihood of the oil going into the
cylinder instead of outside the engine.

The only theory I know that explains the fact that #1 rod is almost always
the first to fail is head gasket failure and oil going into cylinder #1.

OM601/602/603 always tended to get head gasket leaks at the front, the
larger bore of the 350 seems to increase the likelihood of the oil going
into the cylinder instead of outside the engine.

You know, I love my 126 SD, I loved my 123 TD, and I wouldn't mind having a
124. But I'm not sure I'd have a new MBZ, even for free. IMO, reputation
was (and WAS is the operative word here) Mercedes' strongest asset. One
story like this overrides hundreds of positive reports. Major engine
failure with less than 200K miles is just unacceptable for a modern car with
scheduled maintenance.

But I'm sure MBUSA isn't interested in my opinion.

That's probably the case for the vacuum/boost controls upstream of the
wastegate, but the version I have had a boost hose running directly from the
turbo to the wastegate, and it allowed me to run over 16 psi boost--that is,
before it began dumping copious amounts of oil into my exhaust stream (long
story - bad rebuild). It's definitely a later model turbo because it
doesn't have the ARV incorporated into the inducer housing. But like you
said, there are lots of little changes between the engine series. I suspect
those challenges are easily overcome by determined DIY-types, but the
engines aren't direct drop-ins in any case.

I'm reasonably sure the long blocks are interchangeable.
You either move the entire engine wiring harness (if going 126 to 126)
or pull the IPs, manifolds, etc, and keep everything with the car but
the engine. All those bits are newer on the 350 anyway, no need to
replace them with 1987 parts.

Would a 87 300SDL motor drop into one of these 90-91 350SDL cars
with out any modifications?

Other than the slightly different glowplug system, I'm at a loss to think of
too many reasons why a .96 can't be substituted for a .97 If I came upon a
good deal for one of those rigs, that's exactly what I'd do. But then
again, I'd rather stick with the E-class anyway.

The preglow system is different (not any big deal at all), the computer
control is different, the EGR control is different, the wastegate is
controlled differently, The ignition/fuel shutoff is electrical rather
than just vacuum. There are LOTS of little things that MUST be
addressed. They can probably all be solved, but it isn't a slip-in
exchange.

There must be a cutoff date for many of those things to appear, because I
have an IP and turbo unit from a '90 or '91 603.97 engine, and none of their
functions operate differently than my 603.96 engine. I'd be willing to bet
the W140 w/603.97 engined cars all have the newer systems in place.
