nife into the slot around the case because of mfgr's glue
overflow onto the rubber around the case/cluster.

That’s probably the biggest hindrance to getting them out - the rubber seal
ages and pretty much anchors the thing in there. The hooks won’t do it in this
case, you need brute force.

On one older instrument cluster, I had to run a thin steel putty knife
around to break the "seal" between the rubber and the dash - then I could
push it out from the back.

Let’s just say this: If you want to pull the cluster, try pushing it out from
the back first. If that doesn’t work, buy a set of hooks.

So, I should not need hooks?

That and they’re more accessible from the back as well.

Do these work for all of the older MB's? IE - my 1976 300D?
I need to do something about my dash lights rheostat that no longer
permits any light. It used to work if I wiggled it around a bit, but not
any more. Makes any driving at night a bit difficult and somewhat
dangerous as I cannot see my
Absolutely not. I bought mine from my dealer just a few months ago. All over
the aftemarket, too.

Craig,
Just got my official MB pulling hooks out of the tool chest. Here’s what I can
tell you:
Part number: 140 589 02 33 00
Length of wire: approximately 6” from handle to hook
Hook length: 3/16”
Wire diameter: ~ 2 mm
There is a black line approximately 2-1/2” up from the end with the hook.

For the official MB pullers:
- What is the diameter of the wire?
On my 124 cars, it is tight compared to my 123.190. The speedometer cable is
responsible.

If you can, great. If not, there’s enough slop in the jacket/cable that you
can pull the cluster out partially enough to get your hand back there to
unscrew the collar that holds the cable in place. I can’t get a good purchase
on the collar when everything is in the dash, so I pull the cluster

Certainly. It’s just held in by friction, and that’s if a previous remover
didn’t toss the little rubber pads that are on the sides of the cluster that
often fall out/off when it’s removed.
Otherwise, take your improvised “J” hooks and insert them at the top corners of
the cluster between the p

I used heavy coat hanger wire bent into a “T” for years until I finally popped
for a set of the official MB pullers a year ago. They are stout!!

Fashion a couple of hooks from some really stiff wire, insert in the same
area that you would for a 123 cluster, rotate and pull out.
BUT before you do that: Unhook the speedometer cable to provide some slack
to avoid putting a kink in the cable. It is anchored below the dash under

In wanting to work on the speedometer/odometer of our '90 E300D, I need
to get the instrument cluster out.
How do I do that? Any tips or hints?
Thanks,
