My bad. You’re talking about a cut-out on the overhead feeder. I’n thinking
of a interrupter or sectionalizer, which look identical but are often used to
replace the older fuse holders.

No, it's a fuse, when it blows up it blasts open the connector too, but
then they have to come replace the fuse with the stick, then close the
knife with the stick too. Those guys are pretty good at doing that on a
floppy 20ft stick.

That would be a circuit interrupter. Those are the things you see on a pole
near the transmission line that look sort of like a big knife switch with some
curly wires at one end.
They're essentially a circuit breaker and will make a loud "pop" when they open.

Speaking of which - our outside AC compressor is ugly but not that old.
Is
it OK to spiff it up with a fresh coat of paint to match the house color

It's usually the fuse that blows on my line out by the road when a
branch hits the lines that are above ground as they come back to the
pole in front of the house. Sounds like a shotgun going off.

Not uncommon. I've had it happen as well. Fortunately, other than heat or AC,
you're still pretty much functional.
I had it happen in a house in Indianapolis in the dead of winter around 1:00
am. Lucky for us our gas furnace was on the leg that still worked.
I would have gone back to bed if it
