 I've never had a case on a train where my luggage wasn't with me all the time.

3-4 years ago I did a bike ride down to Savannah. Stayed the night with my 
cousin then figured I would ride the train back to charleston then bike to 
where my truck was parked, which would have been like 15-20 miles but that was 
ok. She dropped me at the train station, which was nice. Once the staffers got 
done yow-yowing in back and one came to the counter I asked for a ticket and 
she said it was full. Really. Then there was this whole conversation about my 
bike and whoever loaded bags was not there, or something about no room to put 
it in the bag queue, something stupid. It’s a 12lb bike so not like it needs a 
lot of muscle to deal with it. Anyway I bailed on the idea. 

There was a car rental place right next to the station so I went there, got a 
car for a bit more than the train ticket cost, drove back to an office about a 
mile from where my truck was, a guy ran me over there, then I drove on home, 
probably got there before the train would have arrived. No hassle no drama no 
gummint “workers” to deal with. 

I was kinda looking forward to the train ride as I had heard it was very pretty 
going along the coastal marshes and all. Oh well.

There’s a pool run by a bunch of members of a rail fan group I follow for 
Flagstaff that is based on how late the Amtrak trains are.

trains do from Boston to CT. After CT the rails are shared and not welded so 
you slow down to 45mph max...
Real high speed rail would cut down on air traffic because trains can leave 
from inside the city and deliver you to a point inside a city. For Boston to 
NYC for instance the train takes 3 hours (should take 2 except for slow track 
in CT), an airplane takes 20 minutes but then you've got an hour at the airport 
heading out and half an hour coming in (at least) and at least an hour (and 
$50) to cab from the airport into the city.Plus train seats are bigger, way 
more comfortable, food and drink is available or you can bring your own. You 
can get a 4 top if you're with friends. Much more civilized than flying.
It irritates me how badly the US has bungled rail travel...

KC-135 and E3 AWACS fly over/near our house all the time - both based on the 
707. We can easily distinguish them from the other jets out of Tinker AFB - the

remember what it was, but it had two Rolls Conways in the back.  Very noisy

I would not be entertained to find something that would fall out of the sky 
needing reboot mid-flight.  At least a train has rails to either remain on or 
fall off at a meager 60mph, not hundreds of knots and tens of thousands of feet.

We have KC135s in Tampa at MacDill AFB. Can’t get that close to the base to 
plane watch, but I do try to catch the traffic on my scanner and step out so I

I've heard it called Jack Welch disease, but it's really Bably Boomer Tantrum 
disease.  Long term planning doesn't extend past tomorrow at breakfast, and 
squeezing money out at any cost is all that counts., once the husk is dry you 
sell the company and buy another.  The only thing that counts is getting what 
you want the instant you want it!

Been watching this coming for decades, and it's why we have "supply chain" 
issues.  Half the energy wasted in the world is used shipping raw materials all 
over the world to make goods that are shipped back

We used to have Douglas, then McDonnell-Douglas, then they merged with Boeing, 
unfortunately although the name Boeing survived, it seems like the engineering 
culture of the old Boeing was dominated by the business culture of MD.

The L-1011 was probably the best of that generation,  sadly it never sold as 
well as the DC-10, which was NOT the best of that generation.

It's probably a custom build of Windows that has only the drivers and features 
it needs for that specific hardware and application. The Windows kernel (NT) is 
pretty solid -- probably at least as stable as the Linux kernel. It's the 
drivers and hardware of dubious quality that are the source of most Windows 
instablity.

The aircraft avionics have proprietary  custom coded OS's that have to pass
very rigorous testing before they are certified for use. That having been
said, I use a non-certified device for navigation that runs on embedded
Windows (can't remember what the official name is). It's never failed us in
10 years of use. The same company sells versions of the software that runs
on Windows, Android, and IOS - very nice to have the exact same software on
whatever platform you have.
The main selling point of the embedded Windows device is the 1200 NIT
screen and that it doesn't do anything else - dedicated to navigation.

Some of the airbus reboot efforts could be stymied by the built-in backup
batteries in most of those devices (EFIS).

L-1011 was very advanced for its time. I believe it was the first commercial 
airliner with auto-land. If the engines hadn't been sole-sourced wirh Rolls 
Royce they might have been more commercially viable.

Sort of wish Lockheed had stayed in the commercial market but the L-1011 was 
their swan song.

Don't know much about avionics but I would imagine anything flight-critical is 
a real-time OS such as VxWorks.

Passenger entertainment systems? Mostly Windows-based, from what I've seen.

Had the reboot delays on a regional Embraer a few years ago. After the third or 
fourth attempt to get the systems up, running, and happy, they gave up and 
called maintenance. All these electronic systems are modular so they just 
swapped a module and we were finally on our way after about a 45 minute delay. 
I guess we should be thankful it happened at an airport where they had 
maintenance staff and parts on hand.

I’m gold, but that’s really the bottom tier for American. I’ll probably make 
platinum this year with all my trips back and forth to Flagstaff. I should 
probably get a rewards card of some sort and milk that, too.

It’s not too busy today, my flight to DFW had plenty of open seats. Most likely 
how they got me into first to PHX. As a gold member they automatically upgrade 
on the PHX-FLG flight because it’s so short (138 miles).

Yep sounds like American and airbus. I doubt you have status so surprised you 
got a first class upgrade. That had to have pissed off others that were on the 
upgrade list.
