Hello Mojca, I seem to have run into the same or similar problems as Otared Kavian. I followed the instructions on the ConTeXt wiki, but the command ''luatools --generate'' gives the error message: 'LuaTools | error unable to identify cnf file LuaTools | error unable to identify cnf file LuaTools | no cnf files found (TEXMFCNF may not be set/known) LuaTools | LuaTools | runtime: 0.008 seconds', regardless of the directory from which I issue the command, and though there is a 28 KB file texmf.cnf sitting in /usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf/web2c. As you succeeded in updating ConTeXt, luatex binary and ConTeXt scripts manually, could you please share the method with us. I for one am not sufficiently trained in unix to go there all by myself. (I'm working on a G4 PowerBook under OSX-10.4.11) Thank you in advance. Hi Mojca, Thank you for your help. My problem is not over though, and a new problem has turned up. The first steps you described, In NTG-context Digest Vol 51, issue 81, message 8, worked, that is, with sudo. However, the last four commands, "texexec --make --all", "texexec --make --xtx --all", "luatools --generate" and "context --make", returned the usual error messages (with and without sudo and and issued from any directory along the path "/usr/local/texlive/2008/bin/universal-darwin"): RBs-Powerbook:/ robert$ sudo texexec --make --all sudo: texexec: command not found RBs-Powerbook:/ robert$ sudo texexec --make --xtx --all sudo: texexec: command not found RBs-Powerbook:/ robert$ sudo luatools --generate LuaTools | error unable to identify cnf file LuaTools | error unable to identify cnf file LuaTools | no cnf files found (TEXMFCNF may not be set/known) LuaTools | LuaTools | runtime: 0.009 seconds RBs-Powerbook:/ robert$ sudo context --make sudo: context: command not found In addition another problem has turned up: I cannot use Context anymore, with TeXlive-2008 and TeXshop. When typesetting a file I get the following message: "/Users/robert/Library/TeXShop/Engines/context.engine: line 3: /usr/texbin/texmfstart: Permission denied" Line 3 of context.engine reads: texmfstart texexec --pdf --passon="-synctex=1" "$1" I already changed permissions of file texmfstart.rb to: Owner robert, Read & Write. [NTG-context] Indenting first line of paragraphs
Hi, I would like to have the first line of paragraphs indented but the command "\setupindenting[medium]" (or small or big ) does not produce anything, on none of my machines (all Macs), and neither with TL2007 nor TL2008. [NTG-context] ConTeXt and LilyPond problem
Dear All, I am trying to get the combination of ConTeXt and LilyPond working. I copied the example that I found on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/LilyPond , changing the setups a little (I don't have the font Adobe Jenson Pro). Processing it with mkiv from april this year and earlier produces a pdf with both zapf texts and in between the text: [[output file missing. The log-file says: - t-filter . cached output file 'lilytemp/LilyPond-ConTeXt-example-27-06-16-templilypond-0.pdf' missing. Rerunning filter sh: lilypond: command not found t-filter > file 'lilytemp/LilyPond-ConTeXt-example-27-06-16-templilypond-0.pdf' cannot be found - Indeed there is no file lilytemp/LilyPond-ConTeXt-example-27-06-16-templilypond-0.pdf . With LilyPond.app itself, using TeXShop as the editor, I have no problems. (But I have never been able to get it working from Terminal, generating only messages like "cannot execute binary file" and "Permission denied" even after running sudo chmod u+x .) Dear all, and in particular Mojca Miklavec and Jean-Pierre Delange, who reacted to my first call for help, I think I have solved my problem. Somehow I managed to get Lilypond working from Terminal. Then I placed the ConTeXt-example with the LilyPond filter that I tried to compile in the same directory als the lilypond binary. Compiling it, as usual, from TeXShop it still did not start LilyPond and the .pdf still had: "[[output file missing" where the musical example should have been. However, compiling the file from Terminal did work. [NTG-context] ConTeXt and LilyPond, another question
Dear all, Inserting LilyPond scores or snippets into a ConTeXt file gives very nice results, better than inserting LilyPond pdf's as floats. So far however, using floats has the advantage that they can be given a caption, that ConTeXt gives them a number, that one gets a list of floats in the ToC, that they can be indexed etc. etc., things that, as far as I can see, are missing when entering LilyPond code directly into the TeX-file and use the filter. Does any of you know how this handicap can be overcome? Or else, would it be possible either to add these facilities to the filter or create some other means for providing the LilyPond examples with a caption and a number? One my project files, that In previous versions of the standalone mkiv compiled
without any problems, doesn't compile in the standalone I installed recently
(version 2016.07.18 16;26).
It gives me an error warning hat I don’t understand:

file, TD-Ch0-R1-index-UTF8-4CUP.tex, that gives me problems.
What can I do about this (other than compiling with an older version of mkiv) ?

[NTG-context] Hyphenation errors (again or still) in recent mkiv
Dear all, In the setupfile of my project I have \mainlanguage[en]. The font used is Verdana. With mkiv versions till october 2015 the hyphenation of English words was always correct. The same files compiled with mkiv of july 2016 (version 2016.07.18 16;26) give hyphenations that are definitely wrong. Some examples: begi-nning, pr-ocedure, adequ-ately, st-yle I made some tests with Linux Libertine sans and here also the earlier mkiv's gave correct hyphenations, the july version wrong ones. So it seems that ref. hyphenation something is wrong with this mkiv-version. Or do I now have to use something other than \mainlanguage[en] ? BTW, I found a similar discussion on this list at the beginning of february. Apparently the problem either was not solved or has returned. Thanks in advance for advice. Hi Hans, I'm afraid I'm lost here. When I copy what you write you get and paste it into my example I still get, with Verdana 10 pt, no hyphenation errors with mkiv version 2015.10.09 21:28 and some with mkiv version 2016.07.18 16:46: marv-elous and di-scriminate. So doesn't it show that at least the two mkiv-versions differ in this respect and that when using the new version something extra or different has to be done in the setups to get the correct hyphenations? Fortunately I still have kept some of the older ConTeXt-versions, so my project will not suffer from hyphenation error. But I suspect that reliance on older versions should not have to be necessary. No difference in this respect: they produce the same hyphenation errors in an English text. To complicate (perhaps) matters a bit: I did some tests with German, French and Italian texts. Compilation with different mkiv - versions produced no differences and no hyphenation errors. So far I found hyhpenation errors only in English texts compiled with recent mkiv's on a Mac. [NTG-context] Strange problem with Blockquote
Dear all, I have a small but nasty problem with the book I’m (still) working on. Its 10 chapters contain many Blockquotes, and they all come out as intended except one, in the first, unnumbered, chapter “Introduction". That particular blockquote v]comes out like the others only as far as its width and its fontsize are concerned, but unlike the others it insists on keeping the same interline distance as the main text. Even that would not have been too much of a problem if it had not spoiled the layout by pushing a rather large float off the page, leaving a large gap. This particular chapter is input by means of the Frontmatter file, as is Ch1, which also contains several Blockquotes, that come out OK. When I process this chapter “Introduction" separately with the same setups the blockquote also comes out allright. When, as a test, I input that chapter again, the second time through the Bodymatter, then again it comes out allright (while the blockquote in the real Ch0 keeps its large interline distance). I have tried the following: - add the setup for the blockquote to the Frontmatter file - add the setup for the blockquote also to the Ch0 file itself - add \setupinterlinespace[small] in the text just before the blockquote and \setupinterlinespace[reset] after it. None of this has changed the interline distance of the blockquote one bit. Is there anybody on this list for whom this problem is or sounds familiar and who knows a remedy? If not, which information would I have to give to make a diagnosis possible? (It may be evident that it is impossible to show the problem in an MWE.) Thanks in advance for any help. I did try to insert this code where I thought I might help, though must admit that I'm not sure what to do with the argument [frontpart]. In my projectfiles, admittedly rather a mess, there is nothing with the name frontpart. Anyway, with or without this or some other possibly more appropriate argument, nothing changed the behaviour of this, or rather a blockquote in this first chapter, not even surrounding the blockquote itself with \setupinterlinespace[small] ... \setupinterlinespace[reset], as I wrote in my original post. But, while I was writing this reply it occurred to me that maybe there might be some local variant for \setupinterlinespace[small] and, yes, I found \setuplocalinterlinespace[line=4ex] on the ConTeXt wiki and this does the trick. I need a pagebreak in the ToC to avoid a widow.
So far I used the method given in sept 2010 in
https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2010/052739.html, and still on
http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Table_of_Contents#Forced_Page_Break, but it does
not seem to work anymore.

A few months ago this could still be accomplished by inserting into the

"\placelist[chapter,section][criterium=text,extras={1.2=page}]" in the text.
But now, with the same version of mkiv, nothing happens.
Has this method of forcing a page-break in the ToC mysteriuosly diswppeared or
do I use the worng command?

Presently I’m restyling a PhD-dissertation to make it conform to the

One of the items is the form of the chapter-heads.
What would be needed on the first page of a chapter, Chapter 1 for instance, is:
- Chapter 1 (midaligned, boldface, smallish size (\tfa))
- some vertical space
- Chapter title (midaligned, SmallCaps, slanted, \tfc)
- some vertical space
- (for some chapters) Chapter subtitle, (midaligned, SmallCaps, slanted, \tfb
or smaller)
Furthermore I would need a header with the chapter-title on the even-numbered
pages and the section-title on the odd-numbered pages.
The problem here is that some of the chapter titles are too long for this and
they overlap the pagenumbers in the header.
That is why I would need a shorter form of the chapter title and in some cases
a main title and a subtitle.
As far as I know, in the command to start a chapter there is no possibility to
introduce, in addition to the special version of the title for the ToC, another
special, shorter, version of the title for the header. nor a subtitle.
I use:

[NTG-context] Problem with setup for fonts
Dear all, I’ve been “out of ConTeXt” for a few months. In the meantime some things seem to have changed quite a bit. My present task is to handle the typesetting of the revision, for an external publisher, of my wife’s PhD thesis. I stumbled on a problem with fonts. I can typeset the book in its present version and the revised chapters with mkiv versions till mid 2016. The version I recently installed, on 23-08-2017, does not recognize the setups for the font selection anymore. The MWE below shows the problem. The older mkiv’s give Verdana, the present version some different font, probably the default TeX font. Unfortunately it has not helped me for I have no idea how to set the parameter \Umathquad\textstyle. Just loading the fonts, as I believed you suggest in your mail, does not change anything: the compilation with a 2017 mkiv still stops at “ 7~$\xrightarrow[none]$~6 progression ”. However, when I use the older font calls, \usemodule[simplefonts] \setmainfont[Verdana] it compiles correctly files containing arrows ( $\xrightarrow[none]$ ) with the pre-2017 mkiv's . With my 2017 mkiv it still compiles correctly albeit not with the specified font but with latinmodern-math.otf. (Btw, I found the same behaviour for other fonts, such as: dejavu, times, palatino, bonum, lucidanova, lucida, garamond, libertine, gentium, xits, courier, and cambria.) For me the simplest solution would be to keep working with pre-2017 standalones for documents that contain these arrows (for musical tone- or chord-progressions ) But it intrigues me why some process that worked perfectly in many generations of mkiv has suddenly stopped working in the recent mkiv's. [NTG-context] Endnotes - How to place all endnotes in a separate chapter?
Dear list, How can I collect, in a separate (unnumbered) chapter at the end, or in the Backmatter, of a book, all endnotes from the previous chapters, as lists per chapter (for example in sections in this chapter "Notes", with, preferably, the chaptertitles as sectiontitles of that chapter) My setupfile contains, on the subject of notation, only: \setupnotation[endnote][way=bychapter,bodyfont=10pt] and each chapter now ends with: \placenotes[endnote][height=\textheight] which neatly gives a list at the end of each chapter. [NTG-context] Subjects on this list - general request
Dear all, Considering all complaints about the difficulties to find, in the Garden, or in the NTG mail archive, answers to specific problems, wouldn't it be a good idea to ask everybody to clearly state the subject of their message, preferably starting with the most important keyword, and in particular to avoid (no subject) or [***SPAM***], and similar things as subjects. Also, if you forgive me, subjects like "upto current" or "Bug in \column" are not really helpful when on tries to search in the archive for a solution to a specific problem. In the last-mentioned example, wouldn't "\column, Bug in - " or even "\column, Bug in \column" be better? More specific subject titles in the mails might save some of us hours of unfruitful searching and lots of teeth grinding. This is probably not the first request on this topic but, if so, I thought it would do no harm to repeat it. Thanks in advance. Dear all, I would like to have in my document floats, i.c. musical examples, that basically have the same number, for example, Ex. 3a and Ex. 3b, with text in between and possibly not even on the same page. It seems that it can be done (Wiki-page Command/setupfloatsplitting) but I have no idea how to to accomplish it for figures. Alternatively can one create a combination of two figures but separate the two elements spatially? And if so, how? Thanks in advance for any advice. A few days ago (10 April 2013, Vol.106, Issue 25) I posted a question about
giving related but not necessarily adjacent floats the same number, as for
example Fig. 2a and Fig. 2b.
In the meantime I found a, not very elegant, solution that only partly
satisfies me.
Here is a working example: (I trust the cow and the mill can be found).

This way "a" and "b" become part of the caption text, resulting in: Figure 2

of Figures. This is not what I would like.
Is there a possibility, when not using Combinations, to get: Figure 2aA
small ….. etc?
Wherever possible I use Combinations but in some cases examples to be combined
are very different in size and shape and/or too large to fit on one page
together, so that one of them gets cut off.
Is there a possibility, when using a combination of figures, to split it, in
other words, to separate the figures spatially, to allow them to appear on
consecutive pages, and maybe even allowing some text in between?

Thank you for your reaction and your suggestions.
Indeed, it is not exactly what I envisaged. I would be happiest if there were a
way to add a and b as a suffix to the number, like Figure 2a.
With combinations it is easy to have a general Caption and specific captions
for the components of the combination. But for the List of Figures I see no
other possibility than, for instance "2 Dutch scenery. a. Cow, b. Mill".
In fact I have no problems when I can make use of a combination, but, as I
wrote, sometimes combinations are impossible for lack of space on the page.
What you describe as a challenge for Hans could be perfect, I think, provided
an itemization can be interrupted and continued on next page. (I tried your
liitle code snippet but ConText would not have it.)
Splitting a float combination might turn out to be simpler. Only I have no clue
as to how to achieve that.

Thank you, Marco, and Alan, for your suggestions.
As I wrote, wherever possible I use combinations for related examples, and they
only give problems when the examples are too large to fit on the same page.
The solution with itemize does not help here. With small enough figures the
results seems not too different from that with Combinations. With large figures
stacked vertically the lower one still gets cut off (and with it also the
caption when it is placed underneath the figure). If somehow a pagebreak could
be inserted between the two items, then this solution would probably work.
But I have no idea how to achieve this. Inserting \page between " \startitem A
cow\stopitem" and "\startitem A mill \stopitem" changes nothing.

To include in a text several graphics that for some reason must have the same

the separate figures). I have tried to use "group" as the label for
referencing, as it is the only argument that all figures have in common, but my
trials failed and I have no idea how to accomplish this. (The wiki is too vague
for me on this point.)

[NTG-context] Problem with horizontal space in List of Figures
Dear list,
Using Hans' nice method to place in a document several figures with the same
number, separated by text or on different pages, I run into difficulties with
the List of Figures. Apparently ConTeXt does not make enough space to
accommodate the figure numbers and the groupsuffix, as the example shows.
(Sorry for the large number of figures but I needed a double digit number of
them to show the problem. None of the other elements, titles, captions etc. has
any significance for this problem.)
In this problem the chosen font, Verdana, seems to be an essential factor. With
many sans fonts there is no problem, for example not with Iwona, Arila,
Helvetica, Calibri. Optima, Trebuchet MS. But others, for example Lucida Sans
and Sathu give the same problem as Verdana.
Unfortunately I have to use Verdana for my project.
What can I do to create a little more space for the first column of the List of
Figures?

[NTG-context] Bibliography, replacing repeated authorname by a dash
Dear List,
I'm typesetting a PhD thesis. The university has strict and not quite standard
specifications for the Bibliography and one of these is that if an author's
name is only given with its first entry and must be replaced by a dash in the
following entries.
Is there anybody on this list who can give me a method worthy of ConTeXt? (I've
no experience with Lua myself.)
I did find a hack, i.e. replacing in the .bbl-file the author's last name by
"\hl[4]" (and omitting his initial) the second time, as shown in the minimal
example. But that requires modifying the .bbl-file manually, a task which I'd
rather avoid, but will do if necessary.

[NTG-context] captions in float combinations
Dear list, In two-column combinations of figures, the "subcaptions" for the individual figures are always placed at the bottom, below the figures, regardless of the position of the main figure caption. In my project I have all figure captions located above the figure. How can I move also these subcaptions to the top, to a position just below the main caption? Thanks in advance for any advice. It took me a while to harmonize your new float with my other floats in my document setups. These are all placed on the left side of the page and that caused yor float to move almost off the page. There is, however, another complication which makes that unfortunately I cannot use your solution "out of the box" in all situations. The paired figures in my particular project are often of different size, in particular of different height, (but small enough to be placed side by side). The author wants not only the figure captions at the top, but also the figures themselves. I did not mention this complication because, a) I had found a hack to place both figures at the top, and b) I had not expected that the solution for the problem I posted would be a new type of float instead of a new type of combination. So now the captions are at the top but the figures are not. (Law of Conservation of Misery) I will use your solution when the figures are of the same height and can be placed at the bottom You're far more experienced and ingenious in these matters than I am, so perhaps you have a solution for this additional problem, positioning figures of different sizes at the top too. Hi Marco, hi Aditya, Thank you very much for the solutions you have proposed for my problem, that of making a side by side combination of two figures of unequal height with both the figures and their (sub)-captions located at the top. In order not to make this mail too long I simply refer to the ntg-context Digest numbers and message number containing the proposed solutions: Marco's in ntg-context Digest, Vol 111, Issue 23, Message 1, and in ntg-context Digest, Vol 111, Issue 24, message 5, Aditya's in ntg-context Digest, Vol 111, Issue 24, message 4 These solutions give me all the possibilities I need. When I just want both figures in the combination to be located at the top without subcaptions I will probably use Marco's second proposal, which is both simpler and far more elegant than the hack I found myself. If I want them at the top with subcaptions I will use Aditya's method, which, by the way, is nearly identical with Marco's first solution, but for two arguments for \externalfigure, the fllename of the figure and [location=top]. Hi Marco,
I would be very interested in being able to use this macro, integrated or not,
since in my project there are numerous figures with lots of references to them
throughout the entire text, and \at{page}[] is not satisfactory for me.
I tried the code you supplied by pasting the whole lot into a TeXShop-file,
and, when that did not work, in Alphax, processing the latter from Terminal,
but in both cases I received an error message that I do not know what to do
with. Strangely enough it complains about an error in line 1 even if that
contains a commented out comment.
I reproduce the error message here, hoping that you, or somebody elsm, can see
what I did wrong.
(I apologize on behalf of TeXShop and Alhax for the length of this message.)

Presently I'm experiencing a problem with urls that, hopefully, the ME will
demonstrate.
It seems to me that something must have changed in the source since the end of
september.
The example works with mkiv of 24 sept, but not with that of 3 november and
later.

Thank you Wolfgang. This works and it will very likely also work for my
project.
I'm afrraid though that I left out an important detail, namely that the ToC
itself must be mentioned in the ToC.
What I'm expected to emulate is the following: (with real pagenumbers of course)

So my real question should have been: Is there a way to place the ToC in an
unnumbered chapter, which should not be at the very beginning of the book?
But you have suggested the answer already: Changing \title{Contents} to
\prechapter{Contents} does just that. Clean solution for an, imho, odd request.

You can also use urls there, as far as I know. For consistency you would still need a bibl style file, for which I used a tweaked version of bibl-apa.tex. (which is in ~//tex/texmf-context/tex/context/bib) And a last thing: I input not the BibTeX database but the .bbl which I generate separately. I can tweak that if necessary or to add specific features, like horizontal lines in the Bibliography for repeated author names. (Another requirement which I personally don't like). Maybe all this is rather unworthy of ConTeXt but it is comparatively easy to accomplish and it works. I hope it helps. [NTG-context] (Combined)lists, two questions
Dear all, I have a few issues with the Table of Contents and with the List of Figures 1 How can one force a page break after some section. In my present setup I have a Chapter 4, sitting lonely at the bottom of the first page of the ToC, with its sections on the next page. I have tried \completecontent[3.7], as described on p. 53 of "ConTeXt an excursion", but that does not work for me (I'm on mkiv). What can be done about it? 2 My list of figures gives the complete captions, some of which are long. Those exceeding their allotted space break off, which is OK, but there are some that run up against the page number, which is ugly and unclear. What can I do the create a little more space between caption and page number? In general, of most if not all of the 38 possible arguments for \setuplist, as shown on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/, I do not know what they do and how they can be used. Thank you, Wolfgang. My apologies for my late reaction.
As for my first problem, the link you gave showed me what I needed. Problem
solved.
As for my second problem, the relative dimensions of the three columns in the
List of Examples, I could no see how I could create a representative ME in a
short time, so instead I experimented with the many parameters for \setuplist
and eventually found a satisfactory solution.

Hello Peng,
For a Bibliography with separate sections you can use the following
work-around:
Suppose you want a section "primary sources", for which you have the bibfile,
say, ps.bib, and a section "secundary sources", for which have the bibfile
ss.bib.
The first step is tro to make for each of them a .bbl-file with, what I would
call, a "bbl-generator.tex":
\setupbibtex[database=ps.bib,sort=author]

\setuppublications[alternative=apa] %or any other style
\starttext
\stoptext

This can be processed with mkii or mkiv. It generates a lot of auxiliary files,
including an empty pdf, but the only important one is "bbl-generator.bbl",
which you rename to ps.bbl or ss.bbl according to which of the two bib-files
you used.(= did not comment out)
The other files you need are two .tex-files with the complete set of
\nocite[]'s of the two databases. Personally I never used \nocite{*}. If you
use a Mac with BibDesk it is quite easy to make such a file. It gives you some
extra flexibility.
You can then generate the sectioned bibliography with:

Hi Peng,
I'm not quite sure I fully understand what you want, so I just tried making
separate lists.
Now for some reason that I don't understand no list appears in a subsubject.
However if you use instead SUBCVHEAD as an unnumbered section with
\definehead[SUBCVHEAD][section]
\setuphead[section][header=empty,number=no,style=\bf,after={\blank[small]},before={\blank[small]}]
and if you add \page after
\placepublications[criterium=cite],
then you get separate lists with unnumbered titles.
I hope this is what you want. If not, maybe someone les on this list can help
you.

The first is to put everything in the "booklet" category and enter everything except author names, year of publication and city (or publisher) in the title. The second is to make a .bbl file and edit that, including ordering small caps where you want them, just as in a normal .tex-file. In your project you input the edited .bbl-file, not the .bib-file. This way you can use all the nice mechanisms of ConTeXt for citing, footnotes and bibliography without having to bother with the tweaking of codes. I have done it this way for my wife's PhD thesis and it works perfectly. Problem with List of Abbreviations
Dear all,
In my list of abbreviations I need different styles for different types of
entry. A typical case is titles of journals, of which both the abbreviation and
the full name should be slanted.
I had it working, albeit with some tricks, with older versions of mkiv, up till
25-01, but with more recent versions things don’t work anymore.
Also the setup-commands seem to have been changed:
In recent versions the pair:
definesynonyms[abbreviation][abbreviations][\infull][\inshort]
\setupabbreviations[textstyle=slanted,synonymstyle=slanted,criterium=all]
gives en error message about an undefined control sequence.
In the following minimal example I have listed what I could find as
possibilities. The top three work with older versions. In the bottom three, for
the recent mkiv, both textstyle and synonymstyle remain normal.
In the older versions only the abbreviation could be made slanted the way, but
I could make the synonym slanted with {\em entry} , and I still could do that,
but this cannot be done with the abbreviation.

[NTG-context] Distances between chapter and setion titles and text
Dear list,
Is it possible, in mkiv, to fine-tune the distance between a chapter head and a
section head, between the end of a section and the following section head, and
between a section head and the beginning of the text?
My problem is the following:
In the revision of a thesis, to economize on processing times, I have done all
corrections in the bodymatter, or even parts of it, using the setups of the
entire project. But when I now add the front matter these above-mentioned
distances have slightly increased, by 3 to 5 mm, with a rather devastating
effect on the precise placement of large floats. At the beginning of a new
chapter the difference is one textline (double line spacing), which does not
seem a big deal but with nearly 500 pages of text it leads to nasty results.
In my setups I have for the heads

The minimal example you gave works here as well, but it does not really concern
the problem I had.
When you add a section right at the beginning of the chapter, as is the case
for nearly all of the chapters of my project, things become different.

I think there must have been a setup command somewhere in my setups that I had
forgotten about.

[NTG-context] Erratic error message
Hi all,
When typesetting my project with interaction, sometimes the processing stops
after a few runs with an error message that points at an empty line in one of
the chapters that normally gives no trouble.
For interaction this setup is used:

When I comment out the first of these two lines, in other words, without
interaction, the project is processed without any problem.
Sometimes, unfortunately not always, when I immediately repeat the processing
with interaction, all goes well.
So what is my problem? Not understanding what might be wrong, and not being
able to correct things gives me a feeling of insecurity, trusting Murphy’s law
to make sure that processing will fail when my deadline is approaching fast.
I use mkiv on Mac OSX 10.9.4. All my standalone versions from january up to
today give the same behaviour.
I mostly get the following error message: (occasionally something different
happens: the processing gets into some endless loop and I have to abort it)

The Project needs some 40 files but its working directory contains some 120 files (most of them only for testing purposes). Moreover, I usually only have the “project-file" open during processing (but I don’t know if that is important here). Surprisingly, as I wrote in my first post on this subject, the error up till now only occurs when I use interaction, and it usually does not occur anymore, at least on the same day, after I processed it once without interaction. But the next day, after sleep (of the Mac), the error may occur again. I did not change the settings but I will in case the problem gets worse. What I would do anyway is to make a subsection or a subject “References" after each essay, add the references that I have not cited in my text as \nocite[key] and finish with \placepublications[criterium=cite]. I should perhaps add that I always process my projects without using the bib-module. I separately make the necessary .bbl-files, which I linput before \starttext. It gives me a lot of flexibility. Here is a “minimal" example. It is for mkii now but you can easily switch to
mkiv by changing the starting (and stopping) of the chapters.

What I would do is, for the final processing, not to load the .bib-file but the
.bbl that was generated in the previous run. You can open that file in any text
processor (I mostly use TeXShop) and manually change the Author for this
particular entry. In the .bbl the field Author has this form: \author[]{}[]{}{}
.
You should be able to solve your problem by putting inside the last pair of
brackets exactly how you would like your authors et. al. to appear in your
output. Place the whole lot again between brackets: \author[]{}[]{}{{Zhou, Tom
Chao and Lyu, Michael R. and King, Irwin}} or whatever you want.
But again, don’t input the bib-file. Every time you do that the old .bbl is
overwritten and your correction will be lost. ConTeXt uses the .bbl, not the
.bib.

Hi Pablo,
I cannot confirm any bug, but what I would do anyway is to force the sorting in
whatever order I want by using
\index[]{} with the argument specifying the order.
So your example could be:

Hi,
I think it is a very recent bug. Only the standalone I installed today gives
the same wrong result that you get.
My previous standalones, of which the most recent was installed two days ago,
on november 2, all give the correct result. That is, the bookmarks look OK but
Part A starts on empty page 3 (no head) and Chapter 1 starts on page 4.
Is that really what you want?

Hi Mark,
What I would probably do (again) is:
1 leave out the float dimension from the setup and use something like
\definefloat[figure][figures]
\setupfloat[figure][location=,spacebefore=,spaceafter=,sidespacebefore=,sidespaceafter=]
or whatever you want in this respect
2 collect in a separate .tex-file, to be input in your document .tex-file, all
figure-data in the form
\useexternalfigure[Fig1][YourFigure1.png][width=.x\textwidth]% etc
If you want a different uniform figure width you can then easily replace ijn
this file all width=.x\textwidth by width=.y\textwidth.
3 In your document .tex-file use
\placefigure[here][Fig1]{Title}
{\externalfigure[Fig1]}
This will probably give you optimal flexibility.

Most probably I’m not qualified to seriously discuss Bibliography matters in
ConTeXt, but wat Keith has written here appeals to me.
It would probably be OK to try and control all and everything in a Bibliography
with commands and codes if there were only a few standard ways of presenting a
bibliography.
But that is not the case, even if most people seem to use apa-style.
What should one do with an old book, of which there are several “facsimile
editions” and an English translation, and you were required, by the publisher
or the university, to render it in the Bibliography in the following way:
Gasparini, Francesco, L’Armonico pratico al cimbalo (Venice, 1709); repr. (New
York, 1967); repr. (Bologna, 2001); trans. Frank Stillings as The Practical
Harmonist at the Harpsichord (New Haven, CT, 1963)
or, other example:
Buchner, Hans, Das Fundamentbuch (c1525), CH-Bmi, MS F.I.8; ME: in Carl
Paesler, ‘Fundamentbuch von Hans von Constanz, Ein Beitrag zur Geschichte des
Orgelspiels im 16. Jahrhundert’, VMw, 5 (1889), 1-192

With a Bibliography to make of about 500 items, for a PhD thesis, of which more
than half were of this kind, I gave up on all sophisticated tools of BibTeX and
exclusively used the format Booklet, with Author, Title, City and PubYear,
generated a .bbl and edited that to give me the correct form.
And, yes, I had to tweak the apa -style a little but that part was easy.

I would like to use something like a "half-space" or small space in a situation
where neither no space, nor a normal space is ideal.

Thanks to both of you for pointing this out to me.
Up till now I have never used unicode characters the way Idris proposes and I’m
not sure that I already have the skills to make it work.

[NTG-context] Index items
Dear all, The book I am typesetting contains a very extensive and detailed index. The number of index items is probably around 1200, 16 pages. A fair number of them occur in more than one chapter. Like bibliography items, and for the sake of consistency, I have stored them in some auxiliary files and it is a matter of copy and paste to get them into the text in the proper place and way. (With always a risk of accidentally deleting or adding a spurious brace or bracket, with nasty results.) I wonder therefore whether it would be possible to handle them like bibliography items, by means of a key, and leave their expansion to ConTeXt. Would it be possible? And if it is not (yet) possible, how could I perhaps tackle it? Thanks for any advice. Do I want to remap given index entries? Assuming I understand your reply
correctly the answer is: Yes, in principle. I would want to be able to change
them if there are errors, or if some publisher has different views about the
presentation of titles of items that are in the index (titles of songs, for
instance). And also when (parts of) the text has (have) to be reused for other
purposes. Change them in one operation, that is, not by digging up all
occurrences in the book of the item that has to be changed.
In answer to Alan’s question: names, theoretical treatises and manuscripts,
musical works, musical terms. Nearly all examples in the book have several
features that have to be indexed: composer’s name, title of the published work
(an opera for instance), title of the particular aria of which the example
shows a fragment, and the special features that are shown in the example,
parallel 7ths, for example.
The not-so-minimal example below (best processed iwth mkiv) gives an
impression, also of the optical clumsiness that makes the unprocessed text
practically unreadable. That is another reason why I would like to be able to
call an index entry by means of some sort of key, like in bibliographic items
for footnotes.

This code works beautifully in this way, with only a few index entries at the
top of the file, before \starttext.
But how can I deal with the thousand or more index items in my project, which I
have collected in four separate dedicated files with indexentries, like the
three shown in the example-code.
I have really no idea what else should be in these files, what sort of name
they should have, in particular extension, and how and where I can input them.
I use TeXShop as my texteditor but that is probably not relevant here.
Can you give me some guidance, please?

Thank you for your reply.
It took me a while to make your code operational in the way I need it.
For the new example you gave is still an "integral file". My project, like most
book-projects, I guess, is modular with a master file Project.tex, into which
everything else, setups, .bbl's, front- and backmatter, the various chapters
are input. Though strictly speaking it would not be impossible to add some 1000
lines of index entries before \startproject, it would not be especially handy,
and I cannot believe that it would be the proper ConTeXt-way to do it.
I found that when I split your code, transferred the top part to a new file,
which I named "IndexItems", and input that into the other half, the text
proper, it works. But when I add another file with indexentries, for instance
"indexitemsnames", then only one of them, the one at the top is used.
So it seems that the whole collection of index items must be in one file.
Is that the only possibility or are there ways to enable the use of several
collections of index items?

Hello Mojca, The trick that I would use, in fact the procedure that I always use, is not to use bib-files but to separately generate the bbl-file and input that. ConTeXt uses the .bbl, and once you have that you can tweak it in (almost) any way you like. You could if necessary, make two or more versions of the same publication, for instance in a footnote “Just Someone et al.” and in the Bibliography the complete list of Authors of that publication. For my Bibliographic data I even needed three versions of each entry, one with authorname, to use your example, “Someone, Just” in the Bibliography, “Just Someone” for footnotes, the first occurrence, and “Someone” with a short book- or article title for all susequent occurrences. No problem when you use the .bbl. Obviously the different versions should have (slightly) diiferent cite-keys. (And take care not to input the .bib-file, since each time you process the thing a fresh .bbl is created wiping out all your modifications.) I hope it solves your problem. Hi Mojca,
Despite being neither Hans nor Alan I could perhaps offer you the possibility
of a simple workaround,
I think you could do what you need in the same way as when you put
bibliographic references in a footnote.
So in your case it would be:

[NTG-context] Problem with urls
Dear all,
Can any of you explain, or, better, suggest a remedy for, the following problem:
I want active urls in footnotes. With the same setups and correct urls, some of
them become active and some others not.
See the following ME:

When I process this with mkiv, the urls in AA and CC are active, while in BB it
is not. Why?

I had not noticed the comma and, yes, you are right, when I remove the comma I
get an active url which opens a page on the desired site but without contents.
When I add the comma in the address I get the desired page. I could add this
instruction to the footnote but that seems to me to be a bit odd.
