[Openvas-discuss] Migrate discussions to new platform

2018-09-15 Thread Jan-Oliver Wagner
Dear subscribers to openvas-discuss mailing list,

as you have surely noticed via openvas-announce we migrate the old
community infrastructure to a modern one. At the same time we bring
various groups into one community, which also means to not distinguish
anymore between developers and users.

We will shut down the openvas-discuss mailing list by October 31st 2018.
Everyone will be unsubscribed, but the archives will remain online.

The members of this mailing list (openvas-discuss) are welcome to join
the new community portal at

  https://community.greenbone.net/

The category "Source Edition" is a good home for what was discussed at
openvas-discuss.

However, also the new github infrastructure is a place where
you can directly discuss bugs and code:

  https://github.com/greenbone

Hope to meet you soon on one or both of these new platforms!

Best regards

Re: [Openvas-discuss] Regarding GreenBone for OPenVAS9

2018-03-20 Thread Jan-Oliver Wagner
Hello,

there are two feeds available, GCF (Greenbone Community Feed) and
GSF (Greenbone Security Feed).

GCF is used as default with any source code based setup and also
is the default for for the GCE VM.
GSF is used for commercial contracts and only for GSMs.

The problem you describe very much looks like a network
problem on your end. Your firewall might restrict this
kind of access. In any case I recommend to talk to
your network guys about it.

The GCE default and the Open Source stand-alone modules both
use the GCF. The feed content is identical for both setups, but
a setup from source code might be missing some build configs, tools
or maybe you have older system crypto libraries or alike.

to get all functionalities you could build from source code or
install 3rd party packages. This is combined with the GCF.

The GCE has not all functionalities but can optionally be tested with GSF.

For evaluating a full combination of GSF and all features, you need to
contact the Greenbone Sales Team for a trial hardware appliance.

there is no such thing like default packages. It is all 3rd party.
Please contact the authors of the packages about the radius build options
(or consult the respective src packages).

[Openvas-discuss] Open Positions at Greenbone

2018-02-01 Thread Jan-Oliver Wagner
Hello,

this is to drop notice that Greenbone continues to grow
and is looking for several new team members.

This ranges from development (NVTs, GVM, GOS etc), over Support,
Professional Services and not at least: Technical Writer.

Being on-site at our headquarter in Osnabrück (Germany)
is preferred, but we also support home office.
However, our internal language is english.

If you are interested to learn more about the opportunity
to be with Greenbone, please contact j...@greenbone.net.

All the best

there is indeed no option to purchase Greenbone Support or the
Greenbone Security Feed without a GSM appliance.

We did so in the past but supporting problems on arbitrarily compiled
modules on arbitrary platforms was too ambitious. Additionally
we were not able to guarantee that all NVTs of the feed would work
on all the systems. Discussions with customers became endless.
So, we stopped that product in favour of supporting a range of
well-defined environments which is way easier to maintain and support.

Hello,

I am not quite sure what problem you have.

But maybe you mix up a single report (with results) and a list of reports ?
The XML you posted looks like the latter and your omp call like the first.

we see some high load peaks over the day where connections

Sounds pretty OK.

I tested it with a 20 days old SCAP feed where I

well, you need the base module "ospd" which is provided together with the

Yes, we are about to prepare an updated GCE with GOS 4.1.

Re: [Openvas-discuss] IMPORTANT for SVN trunk users: File location changes require manual changes

2017-08-03 Thread Jan-Oliver Wagner
Hello,

the changes are applied now with 3 commits, the last being

  *r29296*.

Any trunk user: Please consider the notes below and read
the INSTALL of module "gvm" carefully about the migration.

For me it worked like a charm. But if you encounter problems
with special setups or systems, please drop a note here
so we can fix docs or code.

All the best

[Openvas-discuss] IMPORTANT for SVN trunk users: File location changes require manual changes

2017-07-31 Thread Jan-Oliver Wagner
Hello,

this is an IMPORTANT notice to everyone who uses the "SVN trunk" version
of OpenVAS. It is also relevant later on for everyone switching
a OpenVAS-9 setup to the next generation.

As you know there are quite a number of name changes ongoing in trunk.
Most are already done.

But there remains one last big change where you need to manually
copy files before starting your services again.

We have scheduled this SVN commit to

  Thursday, August 3rd 2017.

What do you need to do?

Please watch out for the commit to module "gvm". The ChangeLog
entry will show you it is the one.

You can also just wait until we send a reply to this email that we
are done with it.

Before you start to build and install this update, first stop
all of your OpenVAS daemons (openvassd, gvmd and gsad).

Then follow the guide in section "Migrating to Version 8.0"
of the INSTALL file of module "gvm".

Then you can can build, install and start the services again.

What happens if you miss to do the above?

You will get a fresh setup with an empty database and default
congfigurations.

Your old data are not lost. They still are located in the old
location.

You can stop the services, delete the fresh setup and then
do the copying as described above.

All the best

Jan

Indeed there is currently a delay of 14 days between the community feed and
the enterprise feed (plus the enterprise feed contains some more).
We are currently working on changing this again. Especially
to get "Hot NVTs" to the community timely.

hm, I am not aware of such a migration bug, but would like to track this down.
Was it a auto-generated credential?

However, you can not change the type in the GUI.
And depending on the type of bug, you won't even be able
to fix this in the database directly because the key might be missing.

Your log reads like there is missing a font.
Maybe you need a package like "texlive-fonts-recommended"? However,

we are currently re-arranging the Community Feed updates for a better
automation. Some longer delay may happen during this month.
An age of over 1 month would nean that something does not work as it should
and any hints are welcome. The above file is from end-of-Feb or early March.

However, even after we improved the automation: the Community Feed will never
be as current or as complete or as QA'ed as the Feed that comes with the
Greenbone Security Manager (GSM).

the "--xml" option should still work fine because omp.exe then does

But consider that you could have many notes

I am not sure what you are after, but a classic approach to the
severity of some system is simply max(severities of single vulnerabilities).

There are arbitrary other formulars how to go for this and it is
basically up to you to select a suitable one. You might want to use
a spreadsheet for it and use a CSV export of scan results.

with moving to "Scanners", you need to take care of the "Credentials"
like it is done for external OSP scanners for example.

Can you check your certificate setup?
Can you check the log file of openvasmd?

you can't do that via OMP.
Each slave needs to update its scanner on its own.

Greenbone established a full sensor management including the updates
with the Midrange and Enterprise GSM Appliances.
The update even allows for Airgapped networks.
The solution is outside OMP and quite complex.

thank you for the report! At first glance it looks indeed like a bug,
but not a critical one. I've added it to our todo list.

If you specify a filter in the Report Results section and save it,
then you can use it as part of an Alert.

understand what happened.

In principle, manually starting a scheduled task should not create
any problems.

BTW: You should update your setup. There were quite some fixes, some about
scheduling, see the CHANGES of openvas-manager for example.

have you had a look at

?

With non-GSM you don't have the automatic connection with verinice.PRO, but
the logic should be the same when doing the transfer manually.

it smells like a certificate problem. Perhaps some remains from

Doing the certificate creations manually is ... well ... challenging.
There are scripts to assist (see the INSTALL guide).

There are some other port scanners in the port scanner section of the scan
config if this is what your are asking. For other vulnerability scanners
there is the OSP concept.

in case you refer to OpenVAS-8, it might make sense to go via Scans->Results
to filter what you are interested in. The classic host assets view will not
further be extended. It is still there as "classic" in OpenVAS-9 and will
eventually be removed in future releases.

Also please be aware that OMP 5.0 is not supported anymore.
If you are using OpenVAS-8, you should check back with OMP 6.0.

even in OpenVAS-9 it is foreseen to have a manager next to each scanner.

We do plan to change this beyond version 9, essentially wrapping the
the scanner with a OSP interface.

In version 9 we have done a first step into this direction: "Slaves"
as in OpenVAS-8 are now just a special scanner type and part of the
"Scanners".

the old ("classic") asset management is still there, see the menu.

However, there other ways to get what (I assume) you want.
For example you could go via the "Scans->Results" section and refine
the filter for the host and (if that is what you indend) for the report UUID.

Also in the Report results browser there is a menu item "Hosts" which might
help you get what you want.

If they are in the same group, this does not mean automatically they
can see all the data of the group members.
The data need to be explicitely shared with the group via a permission.

I'd first try from a fresh start (a reboot of the machine is a simple way
for this).

There are some tricks to repair the sqlite db, but I am not too familiar
with these.

AFAIR a public version used to be available from Sourcefire ...

in preparation of OpenVAS-9 we recently extended the migration part.
So, at least migration from 146 sqlite towards OpenVAS-9 should work.

fyi: 146 is OpenVAS-8. OpenVAS-9 will have 184.

the current state of OpenVAS-9 introduced a more helpful way to understand

I guess the feed update routine got interrupted for some reason but some
timestamps were updated already.
I assume that the probem solved on its own after some time (until the next
feed update on the server happened).

However, there are also some option in the sync scripts to enforce
updates, see with --help.

technically it is all in place to create custom "faces". There are
two in the source code repository. Read the GSA documentation carefully
how to activate one of the faces.

Next you can start with a copy of a existing face and alter it the way
you like.

However, this all is not really recommended for non-programmers.
It is a lot about XSLT transformations and you will get familar
with the OMP XML objects.

scanned ones or the ones specified by targets?
Alive or dead or both?
For all users or for a single user?

Depending on what you actually are looking for, you might want to use

there is a built-in maximum of 40K for --max-ips-per-target. You need to

the sync script were reworked and we merged the openvas* functionality

[Openvas-discuss] WEB UI langage support for upcoing OpenVAS-9

2016-10-31 Thread Jan-Oliver Wagner
Hello,

as we are getting closer to the OpenVAS-9 release, we can have
a look at the translations to be supported.

We have 100% German etablished already.

For Chinese, French, Russian and Turkish we have large number
of OpenVAS-8 translations available. But these need
confirmation/adjustments to walk through.

A Portuguese translation is in the progress by a community member and
makes great progress (at 20% already).

We started on Arabic (2%) to see how the right-left style works out. We think
it is accetable, though not optimal. Worth to continue with it.

All in all we talk about ca. 7400 words to be translated.

Anyone interested to contribute to a translation, please let me know. It
is easy to do the translations with a web platform where we can provide
access. You don't need to know anything about .po and .pot files. You should
have a running OpenVAS-9 trunk setup though.
Of course a full translation will take a couple of days to do.

All the best

[Openvas-discuss] Feed server bandwidth increased

2016-10-27 Thread Jan-Oliver Wagner
Hello,

a couple of days ago we increased the bandwidth of the new dedicated community
server by a factor of 10. We increased the bandwidth per connection step by
step and it seems we are serving most syncs quite well now.

Please let us know if you still face problems.

All the best

I do realize that there is need to better communicate that the commercial
alternative to OpenVAS is the Greenbone product series, the Greenbone
Security Manager appliances.

After all, using OpenVAS as a start and when it comes to professional setup
not bying Greenbone does not help the OpenVAS community.

I have a couple of ideas how to improve the visibility of Greenbone as the
commercial vendor of OpenVAS and at the same time continue to provide a
transparent GPLed solution to the community. The first idea is to derive a
"Community Edition" from our GSM ONE to replace the "OpenVAS Demo VM". This
will make it far easier to try out OpenVAS at no costs and without any
obligations and at the same time provides a clear hint about the commercial
option.

Best regards

not 100% sure what you are after, but in the results view you
can add report_id= to show only the results of the specific report.

One problem might be that your certificates expired (check the logs).
The other problem is that you are using an unsupported OpenVAS release.
Please upgrade to version 8.

merging directly two databases is not supported and can get
extremely hairy. Unless you know the entire datamodel blindly
you should not try this.

Maybe some communication problem with the scanner.
Or maybe it just takes looong and "looong" you considered "forever" ;-)

You could try --update instead of --rebuild. This will take even longer,
but you should see some progress on the SecInfo->NVTs page.

Have you checked the "Error Messages" section in the Report Results browser?
If the scanner runs into timeouts, such will be reported there.

the best chances to get answers for scanning/detection issues is to send
them to the openvas-plugins mailing list. The NVT developers might not always
get aware of the questions here on the openvas-discuss mailing list.

well, for example panopta.admin should have a special result in your report
which refers to NVT 1.3.6.1.4.1.25623.1.0.105431.
You can create a new scan config, derived from Full & Fast where you disable
all these NVTs.

If you only care about the reporting, the you could create overrides for
the NVTs so that they are marked as false positives.

However, actually you should secure those services by disabling them or
changing the passwords instead of not reporting about it.

as long as you talk about the same machine, OpenVAS Scanner does
already load balancing across all available CPUs.

You can fine-tune by configuring max_checks and max_hosts for the scan
task.

In the Report Resuls view, you can select the host list from the menu and
there is a column describing the success/failure state of authentication

There is also a log entry about it in the results, but this can easily be

This will not break or in other ways negatively affect a running scan.
Except that a scap update might consume CPU / Mem and thus make the
