For them that are interested, here's the rest of the set:

On some of them I tried to tame the lighting in lightroom, in others I went
with it, though not so radically as above.

Comments, and helpful suggestions, as always, are appreciated.

I notice that I was having a fair amount of difficulty with flare on the A*200,
even when stage lights weren't in the field of view. I may need to make
something like a lens cap for the sunshade, that has a rectangle cut out to
block anything not in the field of view.

PESO - PAD - Sand and Sneakers - Print-a-Day-18

2012-06-19 Thread George Sinos
This is number 18 in the series Print-a-Day for 30 Days.

http://georges.posterous.com/sand-and-sneakers-print-a-day-18

The annual Sand in the City competition was just a few weeks ago.
Teams of volunteers from local businesses compete to build the best
sand sculpture in an effort to raise funds for a local charity. A few
members of the Omaha Camera Club took photos again this year.

A couple of tons of sand are dumped into a big pile to give the kids a
place to play. The sand pile is surrounded by little pairs of shoes.

This print was selected for the print project because of the detail in
the shadows and the blue shoe laces. The printer can produce a wider
range of blues than can be seen on the screen. I was curious to see
how the laces would reproduce on paper.

Actually I had a similar problem with two different file viewers in

The problem could be in an OS setting. For the life of me I can't
remember what it was or I'd suggest changing it, also I can't remember
where Win2K hid it let alone where it's hiding in WinXP.

a guy. Then again, I have experience in that regard, having been besieged by
hookers of questionable gender while waiting in line to get into the Lincoln
Tunnel at rush hour. The hookers worked the car lines, going car to car to
proposition the driver and sometimes reaching in an open window to grab a
little crotch. After one such encounter with a woman who needed a shave, I
kept my windows rolled up tight. Of course that was in New York's bad old days,

Yes, I know your suit wasn't polyester nor was it a leisure suit, but it was so
seventies that it motivated me:-). Polyester leisure suits were definitely a
seventies thing. My pic is from 1975, and that suit was several years old by

Re: PESO Bass Trombone

2012-06-19 Thread Igor Roshchin

Larry,

1. Regarding the glare, - I remember reading somewhere (maybe even from
a source posted here, on PDML) an advaice that with DSLRs the sunshades
should be used at [almost] all times.
I don't remember the reasoning, however.
In any case, the newer lenses are designed (or coated?) to reduce the
flare that can be produced due to high reflectance of the matrix.
I am not sure if that might be the culprit here. Obviously, A*200 does
not have that in its design/coating.

2. I like several photos from this set (mostly portraits and group
photos).
I don't care much for the trombone one - it might be somewhat
mesmerizing but it is too mechanistic for me personally.

I hope you don't mind me sharing my rather critical view on some of
other photos below.
Continuing the idea that I mentioned to you in response to the book
photos, - I would leave out these photos:
20120617-LRC51609.jpg
20120617-LRC51549.jpg
and probably (it's close to the border-line here)
20120617-LRC51548.jpg .
For the first two, I don't appreciate the composition,
for the last one, - the combination: composition (which can be fixed
partially, - by cropping), and a combination of the facial expression
with the grain.
The composition/crop of 20120616-LRC51257.jpg is not my favorite either.

3. After glancing over the set first time, I thought that you can use
a mix of BW and color on one of the shots...
(I even pulled mine as an example:
http://42graphy.komkon.org/swing/camphollywood-2007/Artsy/index.html -
sorry, it requires flash plugin)
And then I found that you did that in the first photo,
20120616-LRC51164.jpg

4. Speaking of that first photo, - even though it is interesting for the
reason discussed in 3 above, the composition seems to be rather
disjointed. I would consider splitting this photo into two.
The right side, cut just to left of the orange light or to the right
(or possibly even through the light?)
is more interesting. The left one might not stand on its own.

I notice that I was having a fair amount of difficulty with flare on

A good friend of mine bought me a new coffee mug, and everyone says
it's a very appropriate gift for me:
http://goo.gl/3XtMe

Now, one might think this is a Dark Side mug, but in fact it is not!
Whoever made this mug changed *just enough* to not get sued. The brand
is not Canon, it's HOMADE:
http://goo.gl/dsgOg

Believe it or not, this lens mug features both an aperture ring and
Pentax's SDM focusing motor (though I think it stands for Stirring Da
Mocha, in this case):
http://goo.gl/N75t4

I'm pretty sure L stands for Latte, and the stabilizer feature is
probably useful when you've had too much and are getting shaky:
http://goo.gl/gjNFS

As much as I would love a Pentax star lens coffee mug like this, what
about Pentax Limited espresso/tea cups? A nice set of FA and DA
Limited cups would be an instant hit among caffeinated Pentaxians, I
think. Hey Pentax, are you listening? Easy money!

This one was definitely female.

I think.

;-)

Have to admit the extreme softness of the photo makes ID that much harder, but
I walked right by her and she was almost certainly a she.

As I said in the initial post what is unusual about this is the time of day.
I've seen the girls out after dark, but never so obvious in broad daylight.
Also, in our neighbourhood, their dress is rarely this garish. Maybe she's
testing out a new location or something...

As I'm sure Bruce has noticed, this part of Toronto is an interesting mix.
South of Lakeshore Blvd. are nice single family homes with Volvos, BMWs and
Audis in the driveway. I'm sure that some of the big homes with waterfront
access are valued in the millions.

North of Lakeshore? A bit more downscale. Lots of down and outers drinking at
sad little restaurants on the strip.

And at night, hookers. Sorry, sex trade workers.

Too bad about this photo. The image, the moment was a good one, I thought.
However it's way too soft to do anything with, other than show the list and
have a few laughs.

Which we've done and off to the trash bin of digital history it goes.

Thanks for looking. Thanks for commenting.

Cheers,
frank

isn't a way to fix it.

When I open raw PEF files in Elements the exposures hardly have to be
adjusted - if at all.

However, I can't preview the PEF's in the open window in Elements S

I use ACDSEE for Pentax 3.0 - when I do that I can see the thumbnails
and browse and slide show and all that BUT the images are always too
dark - anywhere from 3 to 5 stops under in camera terms.

I don't want to tamper with the raw files in ACDSEE - I've fished
around for a viewing option of brightening but I cant find it..

I'm on windoze xp (thought that shouldnt matter) does anyone know how
to adjust ACDSEE without actually editing the images?

Thanks guys,

ann

softboxes and eggcrates

2012-06-19 Thread Larry Colen
First question, how much difference does an eggcrate make when shooting with a
softobox? I tend to shoot in confined spaces, and like to be specific where my
light goes, so I'm pretty sure I want one.

I'm afraid fotodiox is a bit slow in answering email. Does anyone happen to
know what is different besides the price on these?

I see three products that look identical, one is $39 or $54 and 3.8 lbs the
other is $69 and 10 lbs
what is different?

$39:
http://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Softbox-Speedring-Alienbees-Strobe/dp/B003EWKG3M/ref=pd_bxgy_p_text_b
• Shipping Weight: 3.8 pounds (View shipping rates and policies)
• ASIN: B003EWKG3M
$69:
http://www.amazon.com/Solutions-Softbox-Speedring-Lightning-Lighting/dp/B003EWPKGA/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8qid=1340145959sr=8-7keywords=softbox+white+lightning
• Shipping Weight: 10 pounds (View shipping rates and policies)
• ASIN: B003EWPKGA

Then there is this for
$54:
http://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Softbox-Speedring-Lightning-Lighting/dp/B003EWPABU/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8qid=1340145579sr=8-10keywords=fotodiox+softbox+white+lightning
• Shipping Weight: 3.8 pounds (View shipping rates and policies)
• ASIN: B003EWPABU

Do they all work with this:
http://www.amazon.com/Studio-Solutions-softbox-Eggcrate-degree/dp/B003EWQ7X0/ref=pd_ybh_14
• Shipping Weight: 14.1 ounces (View shipping rates and policies)

RE: Question About *ist D

Hmm - I do actually shoot raw most of the time Bruce - only use jpeg when I'm
looking for fast response , as in kids running around.
I should also have said that, with a good lens, I have printed unprocessed

Not a given at all, John.

From all I've read folks generally expect JPEG shots to be basically cooked
and ready to serve. A smaller percentage of JPEG shooters will crop and maybe
do some basic exposure tweaks, but the majority of JPEG adherents expect the
camera to have done everything, like sharpening and saturation.

If you shoot assuming that the shot will need further processing you are doing
yourself a disservice by shooting JPEG and you should be using RAW. Otherwise
you are not only trying to undo what the camera has already done to the image,
but you will have thrown away precious dynamic range too.

I'm waiting for final confirmation, but it looks like I'll be teaching a class
in Redwood City on Thursday 28 June. On the off chance that any of you are
interested in either the class, or heckling me

South Bay Fusion usually has two dance classes, an introductory one from 7-8
and a more advanced one 8-9. Since a lot of people have been asking about how
I get the dance photos that I do, I talked to Bob, who runs the venue, and will
be teaching a class from 7-8. The first fifty minutes will be the basics of
photographing dancers, the last ten will be on being photographed while you're
dancing. From 8-9 I'll go downstairs and answer any questions in more detail
while the main class is going on. The cost for the evening is $12

I was curious to see
how the laces would reproduce on paper.

illuminate the subject, but I'd get some idea where the flash was aiming:
