I think Insinkerator only made one model that turned on like that. Supposedly a safety feature so you couldn't stick one had inside it and turn it on with the other. As I remember, it's somewhat more expensive than their other models and doesn't necessarily do any better grinding job. If you can find out the manufacturer, it might be worthwhile to contact them. How about this... Eye-Fi Pro card - set to transfer only JPGs Shoot RAW+JPG with JPGs set to smallest file size Let the built-in wi-fi transfer from the card to the iPad. All this is pretty straightforward if there are two cards: RAW's go to one card, jpeg's to the other. but Pentax doesn't really need me, they need new customers, so it's probably most important how it will appeal to people who haven't already got a K-5-level camera Something else that would interest me: remember tethering? Pentax used to have tethering capability on early DSLR's. Top-end modern cameras have wireless tethering to iPads or smartphones. If we don't produce any artifacts now, there won't be anything to collect later. The basic concept has been brought up several times over the last many years. Not only do people not make prints, they don't get the photos off of their devices. I guessing most of us know someone that lost all of the photos when a phone or computer was lost. Apple, Google, Smugmug and others may help a little bit as photos taken on a phone can automatically be copied to the Internet, but when the person quits using the account (for whatever reason) all of those photos go away. If you don't take an active part in constantly backing up your photos, and moving them to whatever new and improved media emerges, they will be gone. As silly as it sounds, the fragile paper print may be the most archival media for most people simply because it can be put in a shoebox, stuffed under the bed and forgotten for a few decades. Agreed! This is an interesting topic both in the general and personal sense. Having passed the half century mark and not having kids, I've been thinking about all my stuff, and, of course, that includes photography. What do I leave behind? Is anybody really going to be interested in my stuff (probably not)? Darrel I have started cleaning house this summer, culling my personal library, giving away clothes and household items to charity. There's much more work ahead, but it's really starting to feel liberating. I don't think anyone in my family will be interested in the stewardship of hard drives with digital negatives (frankly, I don't find it much fun either :-)), but they do have interest in prints and as you'd expect, prints of family moments. Prints are mainly stored in boxes to be sure, but not all. And my family really enjoys looking at the photo books we can make through blurb. They enjoy looking at the PDML annual, and they really enjoyed looking at the Wilson book the UK PDMLers and I made for the Wilsons as a thank you gift after last year's trip to England. So this is the direction I'm headed. It's no longer a question of, how am I going to store this stuff digitally (though that issue doesn't go away obviously), but rather, let's get these photos printed up and in books for both future enjoyment and perhaps more reliable backup if you will. This also includes my own personal work--the GESOs and PESOs and photo essays I've done over the years. I'm even planning to do some quick books by year; that is, best snaps of each year since I've been back in photography. With Lightroom it's pretty easy to go through large groups of photos, make collections, then pop over to the book module and do a basic layout. Granted I may be oversimplifying a bit, but if you don't over-think the project, you can get a project done pretty efficiently. So I say get them in books and prints and move on. I'm not sure I completely agree with Robert Jackson's definition of a snapshot, which he claims is often a mistake, but I do agree snaps of family and friends should be printed up for posterity. Printing should not be an activity exclusive to fine art printmaking. Print the silly, the playful, the fun--then share! OT - Positive Customer Service
In March 2005 I bought a Sigma EF 500DG Super to use with my *istDS and DS2. Worked OK but with the next Pentax generation it was good only for manual use since it didn't match P-TTL. At the time Sigma offered a free upgrade, but I used it as a good excuse to bring an AF540 into the house, followed more recently by a Metz 58. Fast forward to July 2013 and I'm looking at the Sigma and thinking it might be worth the $10 postage to send it in a see if it's upgradeable for the K-5 and, if so, how much Sigma would charge for said upgrade. So...off it went to Sigma in NY on July 20. Ten days later UPS is at the door with a package from Sigma - with my upgraded 500DG - no charge. I got to visit with him briefly and gathered a few nuggets of information. He is soon moving to Wisconsin, but apparently he had offered classes through the Sheldon Art Gallery in Lincoln, NE (which I was also unaware of). Anyway, this reminded me that I had intended to purchase Jill Enfield's new title after it was published in June, so I did. I can highly recommend it and even wrote a review on Amazon for it. In addition, I checked another book that is considered a classic in that field entitled, Coming into Focus by John Barnier. This book is apparently used in many classes and so was in short supply when I last looked (and textbook expensive). However, this is a good time to purchase textbooks (before students begin purchasing them again for August classes) and I found a Very Good copy for less than $20 shipped. While I was at it, I purchased the chemistry for cyanotypes (Photographers' Formulary 07-0091 Liquid Cyanotype Printing Kit) and some hake brushes. I've created the inverted image files for a couple of different versions of my image God Rays that I hope will make a decent cyanotype. I have the transparency material (Inkpress Transparency Film, 8-1/2x11) and I plan on printing 7x10-1/2 on watercolor paper from the local Hobby Lobby. I was thinking a command line format might repair whatever is corrupted and keeping DataLifeguard from seeing the drive. Then try a second format using DataLifeguard. OTOH, if DataLifeguard doesn't see it as a WD drive, the problem could be in the circuit board and not the platters. -p On 7/10/2013 12:04 AM, P.J. This machine is running WinXP (SP3), and I suspect that running the manufactures disk diagnostic and repair/format utility might do a better job than the windows format, for blocking out any bad sectors. Not an entirely accurate assumption - unless (1)you never buy any other Pentax cameras, (2)you throw away all your Pentax equipment at the end of five years, (3)*ALL* the photography you're doing with your current equipment continues as is and you *NEVER* use the Pentax equipment for photography you might otherwise do with what you currently own, and (4)you also never replace what you have now during that five year period. -p On 7/6/2013 9:26 AM, Aahz Maruch wrote: On Sat, Jul 06, 2013, Bruce Walker wrote: On Sat, Jul 6, 2013 at 2:37 AM, Aahz Maruch a...@pobox.com wrote: On Sat, Jul 06, 2013, J.C. With prices hitting the bottom most at around $ 600 please grab one. You wont regret it. Even the K-5 II is hardly $ 70 more than the K-5. The problem isn't the body, it's the glass. I don't own any Pentax equipment currently (I rented for my cruise), and I haven't decided yet what kind of equipment I want to get medium-term. If I was starting from scratch, I would go with NIkon, better range of dslrs and you can use newer af glass, as well as vintage mf glass. No FF with Pentax, no vintage mf glass with Canon. Nikon weather-resistant lenses are more spendy than Pentax, I don't care about FF, I like in-camera shake reduction for prime lenses, and I have a soft spot for Pentax because I grew up with it. Basically, my choices boil down to Pentax, m4/3, or high-end PS with occasional equipment rental when I need the best (the last is what I'm currently doing). As I mentioned in another post recently, my impression is that long-term (more than 5-10 years out), *all* the camera makers are poor bets due to likely technological disruption, which makes me leery of investing in glass. 5-10 years out you could be bored with photography, blind or dead. Buy glass now while you can still enjoy it. :-) Right -- the question is whether I'll enjoy the glass enough over 5-10 years. The way I think about stuff like this, I guess/calculate how much it costs per hour. So a movie these days is about $10-$15/hour (ticket plus munchies). So let's look at how much basic Pentax gear would cost me, assuming I buy new (all Amazon prices, rounding to nearest $50): K-5 II with 18-135 WR $1150 DA* 60-250 $1350 D-FA 100mm macro WR $700 That's $3200, divide by $25/hour and that's 128 hours. So I'd need to use that for at least 25 hours per year over five years to get my money's worth. And that's rock-bottom minimum, I'd really want a normal or wide-angle lens F2.8 or wider. Buying used would save some money at the cost of time (keh.com doesn't have them all right now and a used 60-250 isn't much cheaper than new). Then there's the fact that I rented two bodies for the cruise, and it's really really handy to not switch lenses... Normally I wouldn't be quite so rigorous in my analysis, but that much money makes me think, especially when I already have equipment that gives me about eighty percent of this capability (and is significantly better in some respects, namely bulk/weight/convenience: Nikon P7100, Canon G1X with 250D closeup lens, and a Fuji X-S1 that arrives Tuesday). So really, that's 25 hrs/yr *in addition* to what I'm already doing for taking photos. Makes it a lot harder to justify to myself. -- Being old doesn't seem so old now that I'm old. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: OT: Studio space enablement and an opportunity
Walt - It sounds as though there are a lot of unknowns at this point. A good long talk with the bride to be should give you an idea of what she wants. You need to know her expectations and results that she wants - CD, 8x10s, album, books, etc. Once you know what she wants then you can decide if it's something you can deliver. What pixs does she want - of whom? Who are the special people? Many times these are the last photos of old folks before they die. Get a checklist and have her mark what pix she and the groom want. If you can't find anything by googling let me know and I'll get you a couple samples. When it comes to what the bride, groom and their families want, get as much in writing as possible. A completed checklist signed by the bride (and groom) is invaluable both as a reminder to you of what pix to take and as something to point to when someone after the fact says but you didn't get that shot that I wanted. They also need to sign off on all the locations and what time you are to be at each one. Know the venue. Where are good shooting locations and what limitations does the clergy have? Sometimes it's not just a case of flash or no flash. I had one minister tell me if he caught me taking *any* pix he'd stop the ceremony and throw me out. OTOH, a Russian Orthodox priest told me his only restriction was that I couldn't stand up on the altar behind him. Have an agreement about what happens in the event something unforseen happens and you can't do the shoot. What if you are struck down by bad lobster the night before the wedding? No alcohol for you...you're working!!! Then...have fun! Will let you know if I think of anything else. -p On 7/6/2013 12:30 PM, Walt wrote: Thank you, Stan. As for what the bride is expecting, as I understand it, she's going to want prints and an album -- likely even a book. I figure I can glean the overall aesthetic she's looking for based on what I see at the wedding itself -- assuming I'm stupid enough to take on the challenge. Thanks for the input. You've given me a good set of questions to ask the bride before making any kind of commitment. Third, sit with the bride-to-be (and her mother if the mother is going to be influential throughout the process) and go through some of her friend's wedding albums, talking about what shots she (they) particularly want and expect to be in the eventual wedding album. Fourth, practice your flash technique in spaces similar to what you'll see before-during-after the wedding. If you only get proficient in using bounce-flash in low-ceilinged bars or basements, you might be at a loss in a high-ceilinged church. Cool memories, huh? There were the freights and the long-haul expresses between big cities, but in the morning a north-bound milk train that stopped in every town along the route that had a depot and in the late afternoon another that was south-bound. Big plus was my friend with benefits came down from Massachusetts the day before and stayed for 5 days. One DOES need someone who is not stoned by sedatives and post-op meds around for a bit. Especially if you are a cheap drunk like moi - who doesn't drink at all, and hasnt been even slightly sedated since 1995 after a car accident broke my back. I was so wired -before_ the op that I was more awake than I though I'd be the first day. Turns out a friend's son , just by chance, was my nurse du jour before the procedure, which was fun and comforting for me. I swore I heard someone say whose carving? when I was wheeled into op room, to which I replied where's Alan Alda? - this turns out tohave been a total hallucination - my doc on second follow up was quite amused but assured me no one had said _that_ and evryone in the op theatre was far to young to catch the reference, not to mention the inappropriateness. I do wonder what was said that became carving to my ear. I actually watched the whole thing, in a way - you don't have any sense that anyone is even touching you - very odd - and what I saw was like watching a spaceship, lots of intersting colors, and so on. Unlike some friends who thought that nothing had been done and asked when where they going to do anything, I had specifically asked not to be heavily sedated, and I did know something was being done and talked with the doc during it, who kept telling me I was doing fine, as if I were a participant. Then there was the nasty stuff afterwards - nono, not physical - financial! If I had gotten the prescriptions that were written (It occured to me they didn't know I didnt have the med thing on medicare) I simply would have been unable to get them - close to $400 for those three little drops ... HOWEVER, FWB got on the computer and got it down to $88 through Canada and we went back to the hospital for the follow up on Friday the 3rd with papers... I bet they thought he was a lawyer. Suddenly, I got 3 new prescriptions for generic equivalent drugs that brought my investment in drops down to $59 total. (I get my glaucoma drugs free.) Now, even if your health insurance covers those obscene prices (which, of course, are chicken-feed compared to those for really serious illnesses) sheesh... By yesterday I got to reading archived posts and was awfully pleased by the support you guys all showed - really sweet. Also saw the book is out and read PUG comments and looked at PUG - wow, Ken! most gorgeous! and felt bad about mine - darren, I betcha mean't me on the not so sharp bit. I didn't put much effort into that choice, I jsut loved the book. Bought the ebook of the annual - just wonderful! design, photos, Doug's funny and touching intro and delighted to once again have a quote in :-) Quotes selected were especially good this year, too - nonono not because I made it...) I'm still wobbly under the influence, and have to be especially careful where I put things (the cheese went into the cupboard for a couple of hours, instead of back in the fridge and the oatmeal ended up where I keep the catfood yesterday.) but colors are much prettier and I'm not wincing over glare. I might even take out the camera... thanks again for you well wishes mending annie -- Being old doesn't seem so old now that I'm old. --
Re: OT Striking a blow for cropping
It is said that Walker Evans cropped by trimming the negs to the crop he wanted. Then that was the only way the neg could be printed and still retain his vision of what the image should be. -p On 5/9/2013 8:11 AM, P.J. Alling wrote: 35mm and strangely enough 8x10 and larger formats were the impetus for the no cropping movement in photography, 35mm because quality really began to suffer, when cropping, due to it's limited real estate and really extreme magnification at viewable sizes. Large formats were usually printed as contact prints, (enlargers that could enlarge 8x10 film captures were extremely expensive and required not just a darkroom but a dedicated room where they were often built in to the building), and cropping would have to be done with a paper cutter, and really if you're shooting an 8x10, (or larger), view camera it's not like you don't have plenty of time to get the composition right with the camera. Press camera photographers, using formats in between expected to crop. 16-18 mp sensors in cameras have brought that kind of cropping latitude to very small formats, especially so if you don't expect to print larger than 8x10 or simply display on the web. My primary got sick of throwing out a display every time zie upgraded, so that's what zie got last December. True enough. But I love my iMac 27, and I loved the iMac 24 that preceded it. And since displays and computers have similar life expectancy, the package is one that works well for me. What's more, the new ones appear to be very special. That does not match my experience (monitors and computers having similar lifespans). My HP LP2065 is almost six years old and still going strong. I've had some bad luck with desktops, this is my third or fourth in the same time period, but it would be unusual to have only one. (Anecdotal evidence, to be sure, but it matches what I've seen elsewhere.) My iMac is 6 years old. It is my fourth Mac all-in-one computer since my first Mac+, and I've never had one fail (with the exception of one replaced power supply which happened fairly early in one system's lifespan). Replacement has always been motivated by a perceived need for more memory, larger screen, faster processor, etc. I'll probably buy a new system this year, and the new iMac looks like a very attractive option. I can't see any advantage to the Mini, but I might go for a Mac Pro for the benefit of greater capacity for internal HD capacity and external ports. It depends on your definition of a Public School. If it's a school offered/run by a public entity, then I'd agree that thy are non-denominational. However, the big push in Wisconsin by both a Republican governor and a Republican legislature is for so-called voucher schools whereby private and religious schools are partially funded by taxpayer money. Interspersed... On 4/6/2013 7:26 PM, Paul Stenquist wrote: Voucher systems provide education financing but allow parents to make their own choice. The selections are generally many and no one is compelled to attend a religious institution. Thus, they don't really fit the definition of a public school. I have no problem with parents choosing to send their children to private or religious schools - *Choosing* being the operative word. My point is that they have the option of attending a public school and if they choose a private school they know there is an obligation to pay tuition. The taxpayers do not/should not have an obligation to subsidize them. Wisconsin is one of only a few states that allow vouchers to be used in religious schools. The Wisconsin Supreme Court okayed that in 1998, but it's expected that the U.S. Supreme Court will eventually rule on it. I suspect they will affirm the state court's decision, in that federal student loans have always been available at religiously affiliated universities. That doesn't make those universities public schools. Apples and oranges...vouchers are paid directly to the school as state aid with no requirement for any reimbursement - a gift from the taxpayers. Student loans are just that...loans that the student can use for tuition as well as other educational items and that come with a payback obligation on the part of the student. In regard to traditional public schools being better than or equal to charter schools that's largely a myth perpetrated by teacher unions -- of which I was once a member. In Detroit, the charter schools and religious schools far outperform the public schools. Nationally, the margin is thinner, but overall, the charter schools have an edge. That's not to say that there aren't bad charters. There are. But the competition of the marketplace eventually weeds them out. Public schools don't have to compete. That's part of the problem. I have proof of past BW successes which only serves to make me doubt myself rather than the printer. The printer is an Epson Stylus PHOTO R1800 (remember those?) which I bought new about a dozen years ago. The only calibrating I've ever done to the system is a fairly regular session with Huey whenever I begin to see ghostly shadows bordering images. I've given control to the printer and then turned down the available colors (only includes magenta, yellow and cyan) to a limit of minus 25. Get a grape blue. If I select no color control or photoshop elements manages color it's a shade of magenta. I don't do a lot of printing any more, but seems it's a BW when I do. Color hasn't been a problem. I've made several trips to my favorite lab in Sacramento in recent years, always to get a BW done that I'm pressed to supply. I, also, do that when I need a print larger than 13x 19. I've figured out that a new printer would solve my problem, but I'd likely not be around long enough to use it up. Considering the reputation they have for good design, I'm really surprised at some of the shitey junk in Apple's apps. For example, at the place where I worked way back in the Windows 3 days we used Lotus Notes for our calendar and email. The calendar had this really awful Filofax look, with fake ring-binder clips, and pretend paper and bits of pretend leather for the cover. It was really vile, the worst sort of 'chartjunk', to borrow Tufte's term, and used to get a real hammering in books on good visual design - the same books which often promoted Apple's visual design as a standard - which described this sort of thing as 'overbearing metaphor'. Think of Microsoft Bob http://toastytech.com/guis/bob.html for another classic example, lest you think I'm merely Apple-bashing. So what do I find when I start setting up my calendar and stuff on the iPad? A calendar with a really awful Filofax look, with fake ring-binder clips, and pretend paper and bits of pretend leather for the cover. It is really vile, the worst sort of chartjunk. They've committed the same crime with their Contacts app, and worst of all is their Newsstand, which has faux woodgrain shelves, believe it or not (not that I want to use it). It's not even ironic post-modernism. Do any of the Apple junkies here know if there's a way to re-skin these apps to something that doesn't look like it was designed by a 13-year-old?
