That should never have happened - there's not that much vibration from
the garbage grinder. The manufacturer should be willing to replace the
sink. Repairs on a crack like that are just a stop-gap measure. Is the

that shows my everyday kit. Now you have to remember that I am a woman, and as
such, I've had to find a way to combine a purse and a camera kit. I start with the
Domke F-5XB. The link below shows what I can carry in the bag as a purse and a
camera bag. I even show a photo depicting total weight.

Now, as I said this is an everyday kit, which I virtually always have with
me--even if I don't shoot anything that day. I did add the DA 21mm for the
purposes of this demonstration, but normally I would only carry one lens
mounted on the camera. Since I got my FA 50 back from repairs, I have that
mounted. With the DA 40, you'd even have a lot more room in this bag, and the
bag would be lighter.

Now the gender thing is important because men usually carry wallets in back
pants pockets and maybe phones in a shirt pocket, habits which would actually
leave you more room in the bag. I normally have my keys in my front jeans
pocket, but I put them in the bag for demonstration purposes.

As I said this is an everyday bag, but if I was really restricted for travel, this
is the kit I would carry: 50mm 21mm (a pared down long and wide combo).
When I travel for pleasure, I usually always take the DA* 50-135mm, so I use a
different bag. But this past year, I've had to travel for work, and I used this
kit set-up.

Clearly, one good Fujiesque camera would be less gear and lighter; this kit
won't beat that, and I do appreciate the point that even a kit like this can be
burdensome sometimes. Like you, I've been thinking about a Fuji/Pentax MX-1
set-up as an alternative, but if you want to pack a DSLR with fantastic low
light ISO quality, this kit works really well. Hope that helps.

My thinking at the moment is to go with Paul's solution and kill two birds with

I think Insinkerator only made one model that turned on like that.
Supposedly a safety feature so you couldn't stick one had inside it and
turn it on with the other. As I remember, it's somewhat more expensive
than their other models and doesn't necessarily do any better grinding job.

If you can find out the manufacturer, it might be worthwhile to contact
them. Those solid surface sinks should have a lifespan much longer than

2. No Pentax gear except W30 for Anat was taken on this trip. Two AF
modules acquitted themselves perfectly in Galia's hands (I shot several
shots with both of them when I got lazy with my MF lenses). Nokton
40/1.4 and Heliar 15/4.5 (Cotty :-) ) are excellent lenses. All this
gear is so small and light that I could totally afford taking it with me
at all times.

very special experience that I very much like.

May the light be with you and please have a look at the photographs and

How about this...

Eye-Fi Pro card - set to transfer only JPGs

Shoot RAW+JPG with JPGs set to smallest file size

Let the built-in wi-fi transfer from the card to the iPad. No need for
a card reader and the small JPGs transfer fairly quickly.

Then run the JPGs through Photosmith as planned.

metadata. All this is pretty straightforward if there are two cards: RAW's go to one
card, jpeg's to the other.

but Pentax doesn't really need me, they need new customers, so it's probably
most important how it will appeal to people who haven't already got a K-5-level
camera

Something else that would interest me: remember tethering? Pentax used to have
tethering capability on early DSLR's. Top-end modern cameras have wireless
tethering to iPads or smartphones. It would be nice if Pentax were to
rediscover tethering and join that group . . .

That is the viewpoint from a collector, of course. If we don't
produce any artifacts now, there won't be anything to collect later.

The basic concept has been brought up several times over the last many
years. Not only do people not make prints, they don't get the photos
off of their devices. I guessing most of us know someone that lost
all of the photos when a phone or computer was lost.

Apple, Google, Smugmug and others may help a little bit as photos
taken on a phone can automatically be copied to the Internet, but when
the person quits using the account (for whatever reason) all of those
photos go away.

If you don't take an active part in constantly backing up your photos,
and moving them to whatever new and improved media emerges, they will
be gone.

As silly as it sounds, the fragile paper print may be the most
archival media for most people simply because it can be put in a
shoebox, stuffed under the bed and forgotten for a few decades.

Agreed!

This is an interesting topic both in the general and personal sense. Having
passed the half century mark and not having kids, I've been thinking about all
my stuff, and, of course, that includes photography. What do I leave behind?
Is anybody really going to be interested in my stuff (probably not)?

Darrel I have started cleaning house this summer, culling my personal
library, giving away clothes and household items to charity. There's much more
work ahead, but it's really starting to feel liberating.

I don't think anyone in my family will be interested in the stewardship of hard
drives with digital negatives (frankly, I don't find it much fun either :-)),
but they do have interest in prints and as you'd expect, prints of family
moments. Prints are mainly stored in boxes to be sure, but not all.

And my family really enjoys looking at the photo books we can make through
blurb. They enjoy looking at the PDML annual, and they really enjoyed looking
at the Wilson book the UK PDMLers and I made for the Wilsons as a thank you
gift after last year's trip to England.

So this is the direction I'm headed. It's no longer a question of, how am I
going to store this stuff digitally (though that issue doesn't go away
obviously), but rather, let's get these photos printed up and in books for both
future enjoyment and perhaps more reliable backup if you will. This also
includes my own personal work--the GESOs and PESOs and photo essays I've done
over the years. I'm even planning to do some quick books by year; that is,
best snaps of each year since I've been back in photography. With Lightroom
it's pretty easy to go through large groups of photos, make collections, then
pop over to the book module and do a basic layout. Granted I may be
oversimplifying a bit, but if you don't over-think the project, you can get a
project done pretty efficiently. So I say get them in books and prints and move
on.

I'm not sure I completely agree with Robert Jackson's definition of a snapshot,
which he claims is often a mistake, but I do agree snaps of family and friends
should be printed up for posterity. Printing should not be an activity
exclusive to fine art printmaking. Print the silly, the playful, the fun--then
share!

Cheers, Christine

OT - Positive Customer Service

2013-08-03 Thread Paul Sorenson
In March 2005 I bought a Sigma EF 500DG Super to use with my *istDS and
DS2. Worked OK but with the next Pentax generation it was good only for
manual use since it didn't match P-TTL. At the time Sigma offered a
free upgrade, but I used it as a good excuse to bring an AF540 into the
house, followed more recently by a Metz 58.

Fast forward to July 2013 and I'm looking at the Sigma and thinking it
might be worth the $10 postage to send it in a see if it's upgradeable
for the K-5 and, if so, how much Sigma would charge for said upgrade.
So...off it went to Sigma in NY on July 20. Ten days later UPS is at
the door with a package from Sigma - with my upgraded 500DG - no charge.

Always nice to have an extra backup.

Alternative Processes there (that I had never heard of before) by the
name of Jason Jilg.
http://www.jasonjilg.com/home

His work was quite lovely and he displayed cyanotypes, salt prints,
bromide prints, and tin types. I got to visit with him briefly and
gathered a few nuggets of information. He is soon moving to Wisconsin,
but apparently he had offered classes through the Sheldon Art Gallery
in Lincoln, NE (which I was also unaware of).

Anyway, this reminded me that I had intended to purchase Jill
Enfield's new title after it was published in June, so I did. I can
highly recommend it and even wrote a review on Amazon for it. In
addition, I checked another book that is considered a classic in that
field entitled, Coming into Focus by John Barnier. This book is
apparently used in many classes and so was in short supply when I last
looked (and textbook expensive). However, this is a good time to
purchase textbooks (before students begin purchasing them again for
August classes) and I found a Very Good copy for less than $20
shipped. While I was at it, I purchased the chemistry for cyanotypes
(Photographers' Formulary 07-0091 Liquid Cyanotype Printing Kit) and
some hake brushes.

I've created the inverted image files for a couple of different
versions of my image God Rays that I hope will make a decent
cyanotype. I have the transparency material (Inkpress Transparency
Film, 8-1/2x11) and I plan on printing 7x10-1/2 on watercolor paper
from the local Hobby Lobby.

Once I have a few transparencies, I'd like to experiment with some of
the other processes beginning with Van Dyke brown.

If there is anyone on the list that has dabbled in Alternative
Processes, I'd love to hear your experiences.

after a few shots. It's definitely something going on with the lens.
I've tried it with a bunch of other lenses that have the aperture ring
an 'A' detent. They all work just fine.

I've seen that F-- before with several different lenses and it's
always been when I somehow got the lens unlocked from the 'A' detent. As
soon as I get the lens back in the 'A' position the problem goes away.

I think something inside this lens that has to do with whatever circuit
detects whether the lens is mechanically locked into the 'A' position or
not is wearing out.

You wont regret it. Even the K-5 II is hardly $ 70 more than the K-5.

The problem isn't the body, it's the glass. I don't own any Pentax
equipment currently (I rented for my cruise), and I haven't decided yet
what kind of equipment I want to get medium-term.

If I was starting from scratch, I would go with NIkon, better range of
dslrs and you can use newer af glass, as well as vintage mf glass.
No FF with Pentax, no vintage mf glass with Canon.

Nikon weather-resistant lenses are more spendy than Pentax, I don't care
about FF, I like in-camera shake reduction for prime lenses, and I have
a soft spot for Pentax because I grew up with it. Basically, my choices
boil down to Pentax, m4/3, or high-end PS with occasional equipment
rental when I need the best (the last is what I'm currently doing).

As I mentioned in another post recently, my impression is that long-term
(more than 5-10 years out), *all* the camera makers are poor bets due to
likely technological disruption, which makes me leery of investing in
glass.

5-10 years out you could be bored with photography, blind or dead. Buy
glass now while you can still enjoy it. :-)

Right -- the question is whether I'll enjoy the glass enough over 5-10
years. The way I think about stuff like this, I guess/calculate how much
it costs per hour. So a movie these days is about $10-$15/hour (ticket
plus munchies). So let's look at how much basic Pentax gear would cost
me, assuming I buy new (all Amazon prices, rounding to nearest $50):

K-5 II with 18-135 WR $1150
DA* 60-250 $1350
D-FA 100mm macro WR $700

That's $3200, divide by $25/hour and that's 128 hours. So I'd need to
use that for at least 25 hours per year over five years to get my
money's worth. And that's rock-bottom minimum, I'd really want a
normal or wide-angle lens F2.8 or wider. Buying used would save some
money at the cost of time (keh.com doesn't have them all right now and a
used 60-250 isn't much cheaper than new).

Then there's the fact that I rented two bodies for the cruise, and it's
really really handy to not switch lenses...

Normally I wouldn't be quite so rigorous in my analysis, but that much
money makes me think, especially when I already have equipment that gives
me about eighty percent of this capability (and is significantly better
in some respects, namely bulk/weight/convenience: Nikon P7100, Canon G1X
with 250D closeup lens, and a Fuji X-S1 that arrives Tuesday). So
really, that's 25 hrs/yr *in addition* to what I'm already doing for
taking photos. Makes it a lot harder to justify to myself.

2013-07-06 Thread Paul Sorenson

Walt -

It sounds as though there are a lot of unknowns at this point. A good
long talk with the bride to be should give you an idea of what she
wants. You need to know her expectations and results that she wants -
CD, 8x10s, album, books, etc. Once you know what she wants then you can
decide if it's something you can deliver.

What pixs does she want - of whom? Who are the special people? Many
times these are the last photos of old folks before they die.

Get a checklist and have her mark what pix she and the groom want. If
you can't find anything by googling let me know and I'll get you a
couple samples.

When it comes to what the bride, groom and their families want, get as
much in writing as possible. A completed checklist signed by the bride
(and groom) is invaluable both as a reminder to you of what pix to take
and as something to point to when someone after the fact says but you
didn't get that shot that I wanted. They also need to sign off on all
the locations and what time you are to be at each one.

Know the venue. Where are good shooting locations and what limitations
does the clergy have? Sometimes it's not just a case of flash or no
flash. I had one minister tell me if he caught me taking *any* pix he'd
stop the ceremony and throw me out. OTOH, a Russian Orthodox priest
told me his only restriction was that I couldn't stand up on the altar
behind him.

Have an agreement about what happens in the event something unforseen
happens and you can't do the shoot. What if you are struck down by bad
lobster the night before the wedding?

No alcohol for you...you're working!!!

Then...have fun!

Will let you know if I think of anything else.

and such. So, I can't help feeling I'll be the proverbial turd in the
punchbowl. The closest thing I've done to this was an awards banquet at
the Olympic Club in SF -- back when I crashed on Larry's couch. I'd only
been shooting a little over a year at the time, and I've learned a
(relatively) huge amount since then. But, still . . .

Thanks for the pointer on practicing flash technique. As for what the
bride is expecting, as I understand it, she's going to want prints and
an album -- likely even a book. I figure I can glean the overall
aesthetic she's looking for based on what I see at the wedding itself --
assuming I'm stupid enough to take on the challenge.

Thanks for the input. You've given me a good set of questions to ask the
bride before making any kind of commitment. I'll have to sit down and
come up with a list of others to ask, as well as a litany of reasons why
she might consider someone who knows what the hell they're doing. ;)

Second, at least sample some of the web resources Bruce mentioned.
Third, sit with the bride-to-be (and her mother if the mother is going

Fourth, practice your flash technique in spaces similar to what you'll

what sort of restrictions there will be on photography during the
service; if it a church, some pastors can be quite fussy about
photography in general, about the use of flash [generally not
accepted], etc.)
Fifth, make sure that you and the bride-to-be are totally in synch
with respect to what the product will be. Prints? Albums? 600x800
jpeg's on Facebook? Does she expect to see everything, or is she
willing to let you cull and select the better shots for her to choose

Ok, here's the deal:

The problem with Mozilla started on Saturday, 29Jun2013. Every time I
launch the browser, I get TWO tabs - homepage Plugin check.

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/

I have to tell NoScript to allow Mozilla.org before I can see the
plugins being checked.

*ALL* of my plugins are currently up to date except for Quicktime (more
on that later). I had to disable Quicktime.

I cannot log in to Mozilla.org support. It tells me my username or
password is incorrect. I cannot create a new account because my existing
account is already linked to my email address. I will have to create a
new email account if I want to create a new Mozilla account so I can log
in to Mozilla.org support.

Searching Mozilla.org, I find a question about the same problem I'm
experiencing. The topic was CLOSED as FIXED 2 years before I encountered
the problem. None of the solutions proposed back then work.

Quicktime - You can't just download it, you MUST HAVE AN ACCOUNT.

Apple won't let me use my iTunes username/password to download Quicktime.

Apple wouldn't let me create a new account to download Quicktime because
my email address is already linked to my iTunes account. I can't update
Quicktime because I can't log in to my existing account I can't create
a new account.

So, I have disabled Quicktime. When I start Firefox, I still get the
same two tabs when I look at the plugins, Quicktime is not shown.
All of the other plugins are current and up to date.

I'm looking to see what other browser options I might have. It will
*NOT* be Windoze Exploder, and it will *NOT* be Chrome. Probably not
Safari either given the number of horror stories I've heard about it
the problems I'm already having with Quicktime.

I have both the Pentax AF-540 and the Metz 58 AF-2. Speaking from using

The light output seems to be pretty close to the same

The Metz seems produce more consistent exposures.

Both can be run wirelessly.

Function changes can be more more quickly with the Pentax using
switches and dials. The Metz is more menu driven. Some users have
complained about the use of menus with the Metz.

The Metz has an adjustable secondary flash to use for fill when bouncing
the main flash.

The Metz firmware can be updated via USB connection to your computer.
The latest upgrade appears to address the K-5 II.

The Metz retains its function settings when it goes you turn it off, the

All is not lost for stills if your husband got some decent video with
the K-01. In LR4 you can copy a single frame as a jpg at the same
resolution as the video.

It's explained just after the 5 minute mark in the video tutorial on
this page...

a lonely existence. It's an oddball choice among people who use
cameras generally, and people who use cameras for money especially.
Sometimes, I am called upon to defend that choice, or explain it, to
those who are unfamiliar. Fine. But, that becomes harder to do when
I start to publicly mouth off about the failings of my gear. I think
when a CaNikon photographer grouses about their camera's latest
failing, nobody questions why they were using that brand to begin with
(aside from the usual brand wars/fanboys/girls). My social networks
are intertwined with those of friends, family, customers, colleagues
and I just don't feel like exposing myself to that line of questioning

But, I'll bitch moan with you guys all day. That's fine.

Wouldn't focus, wouldn't shoot, no matter the on/off, in/out/switch of

Not sure if this is a warranty repair or not... Especially since the mirror

The guy at the venue recommended transferring the pix to iMovie and burning it
to a DVD. I tried that, but the tops and bottoms of portrait-oriented pix got
cut off. Time is short, so I can't do anything elaborate.

So, the questions are:
- is there another way to project from a DVD?
- If not, and we have to take a laptop along, would you recommend projecting
from Lightroom, iPhoto, or something else?
- Is there an advantage to a pdf slide show? What software would you use to
project it?

Thanks!

The above might work, but no promises. When I got Elements 11, I couldn't get
a lightroom file to open in the photoshop elements editor. Then with some

editor as opposed to the PSE organizer. But saving the file next to the

PSE 11 then reimport into lightroom. Maybe someone knows the trick to get the
file saved/stacked next to the lightroom original in lightroom 4--even though I
have this option ticked in Lightroom 4.

Other than this procedure , I don't have any other ideas.

plain glass in the glasses I have on that side.

I was quite nervous beforehand, but it really was no big deal and

knocked out and it ws local anesthetic and a sedative.

For all of you facing this - the improvement in color perception is
terrif - I can see those things in the shadows now, even though my

best of all, it had a definite positive effect on my glaucoma control.

(aside to Dan, 16-16 after surgery ) Doc said that happens in about 20%
of cases.

Only thing that is a bit hard to deal with is how very very drowsy the
medications post-op are making me. three different eye drops on a tight
schedule 4 times a day for a week, then 3, then 2, then once.
plus my twice a day glaucoma drops.

Big plus was my friend with benefits came down from Massachusetts the

stoned by sedatives and post-op meds around for a bit. Especially if
you are a cheap drunk like moi - who doesn't drink at all, and hasnt
been even slightly sedated since 1995 after a car accident broke my back.

I was so wired -before_ the op that I was more awake than I though I'd

Turns out a friend's son , just by chance, was my nurse du jour before
the procedure, which was fun and comforting for me.

I swore I heard someone say whose carving? when I was wheeled into op

been a total hallucination - my doc on second follow up was quite amused
but assured me no one had said _that_ and evryone in the op theatre was
far to young to catch the reference, not to mention the
inappropriateness. I do wonder what was said that became carving to
my ear.

I actually watched the whole thing, in a way - you don't have any sense
that anyone is even touching you - very odd - and what I saw was like
watching a spaceship, lots of intersting colors, and so on. Unlike
some friends who thought that nothing had been done and asked when
where they going to do anything, I had specifically asked not to be
heavily sedated, and I did know something was being done and talked with
the doc during it, who kept telling me I was doing fine, as if I were
a participant.

Then there was the nasty stuff afterwards - nono, not physical -
financial! If I had gotten the prescriptions that were written (It
occured to me they didn't know I didnt have the med thing on medicare)
I simply would have been unable to get them - close to $400 for those
three little drops ... HOWEVER,
FWB got on the computer and got it down to $88 through Canada and we
went back to the hospital for the follow up on Friday the 3rd with
papers... I bet they thought he was a lawyer.

Suddenly, I got 3 new prescriptions for generic equivalent drugs that
brought my investment in drops down to $59 total. (I get my glaucoma
drugs free.) Now, even if your health insurance covers those obscene
prices (which, of course, are chicken-feed compared to those for really
serious illnesses) sheesh...

By yesterday I got to reading archived posts and was awfully pleased

loved the book.

Bought the ebook of the annual - just wonderful! design, photos, Doug's
funny and touching intro and delighted to once again have a quote in :-)

I'm still wobbly under the influence, and have to be especially careful
where I put things (the cheese went into the cupboard for a couple of

Re: OT Striking a blow for cropping

2013-05-09 Thread Paul Sorenson
It is said that Walker Evans cropped by trimming the negs to the crop he
wanted. Then that was the only way the neg could be printed and still
retain his vision of what the image should be.

On 5/9/2013 8:11 AM, P.J. Alling wrote:

35mm and strangely enough 8x10 and larger formats were the impetus for
the no cropping movement in photography, 35mm because quality really
began to suffer, when cropping, due to it's limited real estate and
really extreme magnification at viewable sizes. Large formats were
usually printed as contact prints, (enlargers that could enlarge 8x10
film captures were extremely expensive and required not just a darkroom
but a dedicated room where they were often built in to the building),
and cropping would have to be done with a paper cutter, and really if
you're shooting an 8x10, (or larger), view camera it's not like you
don't have plenty of time to get the composition right with the camera.
Press camera photographers, using formats in between expected to crop.
16-18 mp sensors in cameras have brought that kind of cropping latitude
to very small formats, especially so if you don't expect to print larger
than 8x10 or simply display on the web.

Admittedly the extreme cases were probably only possible because of
being shot with a large format camera to begin with, but whatever.

days and it's coming together. Things haven't been helped by a hard
rive failure two days ago but it's by backup drive so nothing was
lost. Only a second hard drive failure would do that! (I have two new
drives on the way.)

Photos were prepped as they came in (spreading the work out a lot and
saving much stress in the long run). Photo selection was finished some
time ago by the editorial staff. I've got the overall book design,
fonts and layout set and the various section divider pages done. It's
really just a matter of loading the photos into the pages.

Oh yeah, Doug still has to write the foreword and I still have to
write the Global Health Initiative page. No biggie(s). We'll get

never has been. She's an iPhone snapper/videographer, but I hope to
get her interested in what she can do with a 'real' camera. I plan on
starting her out with the 16-45mm that I'm getting from Tom C and also
giving her a Pentax F 35-70mm for when she wants a bit more reach or
close focusing.

I hope that once she sees the quality of photos and videos she can
produce with it that she'll have a lot of fun capturing the grandchild
and who knows what else. Maybe I'll create a monster.

If nothing else, we can share lenses and perhaps it will provide me
some cover. But honey, I bought that new lens for YOU.

Peeking at the box right now, I see that the glass scanning surface is indented
a bit into the scanner.

The pages that I have to scan from their wedding album are oversized - like an
8x10 image on a 10x12 board-like page. The pages come out (the whole album
can be disassembled into a bunch of flat pages - I'll have to remember the page
sequence so I can reassemble it properly) so that's not an issue.

The problem is: Towards the edge of the image, the photo is actually going to
be maybe as much as a few millimeters above the surface of the glass. That's
going to suck, isn't it?

How deep is the depth of field of the scanner? Am I screwed?

that people look at the gallery.

lifespans). My HP LP2065 is almost six years old and still going strong.
I've had some bad luck with desktops, this is my third or fourth in the
same time period, but it would be unusual to have only one.

(Anecdotal evidence, to be sure, but it matches what I've seen
elsewhere.)

My iMac is 6 years old. It is my fourth Mac all-in-one computer since my first Mac+, and
I've never had one fail (with the exception of one replaced power supply which happened
fairly early in one system's lifespan). Replacement has always been motivated by a
perceived need for more memory, larger screen, faster processor, etc. I'll
probably buy a new system this year, and the new iMac looks like a very attractive
option. I can't see any advantage to the Mini, but I might go for a Mac Pro for the
benefit of greater capacity for internal HD capacity and external ports. (Anecdotal
evidence, to be sure, but it matches what I've seen elsewhere.)

It depends on your definition of a Public School. If it's a school

The argument for that is they provide a better education than the

their own choice. The selections are generally many and no one is
compelled to attend a religious institution. Thus, they don't really

I have no problem with parents choosing to send their children to
private or religious schools - *Choosing* being the operative word. My
point is that they have the option of attending a public school and if
they choose a private school they know there is an obligation to pay
tuition. The taxpayers do not/should not have an obligation to
subsidize them.

Wisconsin is one of only a few states that allow vouchers to be used
in religious schools. The Wisconsin Supreme Court okayed that in
1998, but it's expected that the U.S. Supreme Court will eventually
rule on it. I suspect they will affirm the state court's decision, in
that federal student loans have always been available at religiously
affiliated universities. That doesn't make those universities public
schools.

Apples and oranges...vouchers are paid directly to the school as state
aid with no requirement for any reimbursement - a gift from the
taxpayers. Student loans are just that...loans that the student can use
for tuition as well as other educational items and that come with a
payback obligation on the part of the student.

In regard to traditional public schools being better than or equal to
charter schools that's largely a myth perpetrated by teacher unions
-- of which I was once a member. In Detroit, the charter schools and
religious schools far outperform the public schools. Nationally, the
margin is thinner, but overall, the charter schools have an edge.
That's not to say that there aren't bad charters. There are. But the
competition of the marketplace eventually weeds them out. Public
schools don't have to compete. That's part of the problem.

I have proof of past BW successes which only serves to make me doubt

The only calibrating I've ever done to the system is a fairly
regular session with Huey whenever I begin to see ghostly shadows bordering images.
I've given control to the printer and then turned down the available colors (only
includes magenta, yellow and cyan) to a limit of minus 25. Get a grape blue. If I select no
color control or photoshop elements manages color it's a shade of magenta.
I don't do a lot of printing any more, but seems it's a BW when I do. Color
hasn't been a problem.
I've made several trips to my favorite lab in Sacramento in recent years, always to get a
BW done that I'm pressed to supply. I, also, do that when I need a print larger than
13x 19.
I've figured out that a new printer would solve my problem, but I'd
likely not be around long enough to use it up.
If you're familiar with the printer and have any thoughts that may
help, please pass them along.

Thanks!

Considering the reputation they have for good design, I'm really surprised
at some of the shitey junk in Apple's apps.

For example, at the place where I worked way back in the Windows 3 days we
used Lotus Notes for our calendar and email. The calendar had this really
awful Filofax look, with fake ring-binder clips, and pretend paper and bits
of pretend leather for the cover. It was really vile, the worst sort of
'chartjunk', to borrow Tufte's term, and used to get a real hammering in
books on good visual design - the same books which often promoted Apple's
visual design as a standard - which described this sort of thing as
'overbearing metaphor'. Think of Microsoft Bob

 think I'm merely Apple-bashing.

So what do I find when I start setting up my calendar and stuff on the iPad?

They've committed the same crime with their Contacts app, and worst of all
is their Newsstand, which has faux woodgrain shelves, believe it or not (not
that I want to use it).

 It's not even ironic post-modernism.

Do any of the Apple junkies here know if there's a way to re-skin these apps
to something that doesn't look like it was designed by a 13-year-old?

 Cheers,
