Hmm, forums stopped sending me emails sometime during covid lockdown and I didn't notice since my LMS is temporarily out of action. I've unwatched and re-watched this thread, and posting this, so hopefully it'll start emailing me again. Unlikely given LMS has no IPv6 support at all. LMS only looks up A records, and it does the lookup itself so the OS doesn't get chance to decided to look for as well. I am still running 7.8.1 on Windows Home Server v1 with no apparent problems. I only listen to Classic FM live, and BBC using iPlayer plugin which is also mostly live. When Apple bring out a new major version n, I usually wait for something like n.1.2 before upgrading to n. In this case it'll be more like 13.2.2 or even 13.3.2 I wait for, depending on how quickly 13.2 appears. Apple have made a complete horlicks of this. Red Button was overtaken many years ago by the web, and never worked very well anyway. My dad used Teletext a lot to look things up and it worked well for him. He never took to Red Button the same way, he claimed it didn't have what he used to read on Teletext, and he only got that information back when he went online and could get it on the web. On the few occasions I tried to use Red Button I found it incredibly slow. Far slower than I remember Teletext being. Not to worry, a new manager of BBC radio will be along sooner or later and the BBC Sounds obsession with being "Cool wi' da yoof!" will change into some other random obsession. As for BBC Sounds, the "iPlayer" brand name has global recognition. Throwing that away and trying to start again with a new name seems like absolute madness to me, but what do I know? The BBC squander the licence fee in mysterious ways. Meanwhile as bpa says, all we can do is accept what we get. We have zero ability to change BBC policy. Working here, but the scaling of the graphics to square seems to be cutting things off. There are lots of resolutions on the list, but I was hoping to find an option which simply displays the original graphics from the BBC as is without changing it at all. There doesn't appear to be one, at least not by name. I'm usually looking at them on Squeezebox Controller. I don't care that they're often not square, but I want to see all of it. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.6 (and higher) & BBCiPlayerExtra 2.0 (and higher) Support
Do the BBC say anywhere why the podcasts are only in 128kbps MP3? That's a step down even from the non UK streams and a considerable reduction in quality compared to UK 320kbps AAC streams. A few years ago it was all about HD radio and then the FLAC Radio 3 Concert Sound for the proms, it was encouraging to see the push for better sound quality. It seems a big reversal to suddenly go to only 128kbps MP3 for some things. I know some players can only cope with MP3 but they could use 320kbps, or offer two streams. What happens on an LMS too old to support the fix? Does it just behave as before ie. as if you hadn't fixed it? Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: BBCiPlayer Plugin (UK only)
There is no working old iPlayer plugin version 1.3, users have to manually apply about 3 patches to the file. I know mherger moved the repo for the old 1.3 as the previous ones stopped working. But even with the newer repo I'm not sure bpa can put out an iPlayer 1.3, it was Triodes and maybe only he can issue a new one or maybe now only mherger can (I'm not sure what the restrictions are). In addition to which, I suspect bpa doesn't want to be responsible for merging all the 1.3 patches and issuing an updated 1.3 and then dealing with the support problems as they arise. Better in my view to let 1.3 wither on the vine and do no work about it. What I was asking is if it had already completely withered, but if live play still works I guess not. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.5.2 beta test
BBC Apps and web site originally only went back 7 days so the external feed matched. Then everything else got upgraded to 30 days and the external feed we use got left as it was. I don't believe it was any more complicated than that, apart from possible complications that third party(ies) seem to be involved in maintaining the external feed and may not have wanted to do any work to upgrade it. There may also have been concerns that some third party equipment couldn't handle 30 days of data on the external feed, maybe enough new hardware is out there now that this is no longer a concern? Personally I suspect some of the third party hardware manufacturers that use the external feed pushed for this. They probably didn't like that BBC Apps and web site could do 30 days and their internet radio hardware players could not. The BBC block a number of common VPN providers, specifically because they don't want people doing what you are trying to do. And given you don't pay the BBC licence fee the BBC are entirely within their rights to restrict the bit rate you can receive. So don't be surprised if it doesn't work. The flaw in the BBC's scheme is they don't provide a way for non UK citizens to pay the BBC licence fee and receive the benfits. But then they'd have to work out rights issues, ie. a 320kbps AAC stream but with the content they don't have a non UK licence for removed. I can see why the BBC stick to just two options ie. UK full fat and international rights restricted and bit rate restricted. There is no connection between what repos current LMS server releases use and what current iPlayer is on. LMS still ships with a much older repo. I tried once to persuade the LMS maintainer to update it, but he asked for advice on what repo to use instead and people couldn't reach agreement. I feel bpa is too modest and defers to the last version the long term iPlayer plugin maintainer released rather too readily, but that version is no longer of any real use. I think people playing Radio 3 with VLC and ffmpeg constitute such a tiny fraction of listeners as to be irrelevant. Sadly the same probably goes for LMS these days, I suspect there aren't enough of us to make an impact. And none of the other hardware internet radio suppliers got their act together in time, which sadly isn't a surprise. What matters is people playing with web browsers, and much more importantly iPlayer Radio app on various platforms. But I believe iPlayer Radio doesn't support Dash Flac, so this is a very early trial of the infrastructure in a situation where they know they're not going to be swamped with more listeners than they can cope with. But that raises the question of how they can possibly judge the appeal of lossless Radio 3 with such a small subset of the listeners. The binaural streams and local FLAC files play fine. I meant that the binaural surround effect doesn't work well for me, I can hardly hear it. Distracting sounds aren't the issue, if they were at I'd least I'd know it was working! Maybe it's because I don't use headphones or earphones much. In stereo it all sounds inside my head, which is weird because that is never how music is in real life. So I listen with speakers almost exclusively, and I'm a big fan of quadraphonic recordings. The FLAC stream itself will run at anything from 700 to 1000kbps depending on how complex the PCM is and how loud it is (modern loudness wars music tends to get less compression out of FLAC). The Touch can play AAC natively, whereas the Classics and Duet need to transcode it (probably to FLAC). There's an option in iPlayer plugin for whether to allow transcoding, make sure you haven't turned that off. Others will probably suggest playing some non iPlayer AAC streams to see where the fault is. I don't know where those streams are. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: BBCiPlayerExtra v2.0
Well I've taken the plunge to get iPlayer Extras 2.0.0, I'm using that and iPlayer 1.5.4.4. They are both working fine with LMS 7.8.0 on my WHS v1 Atom N270 based server. I have noticed that Dash 320kbps AAC streams (I don't use anything else) start faster than 1.4.10. In particular they start in one go, with 1.4.10 I got a brief burst of music then a quick re-buffer then the music came back and ran continuously. Now it just starts and plays, which is an improvement since getting to the "just plays" is faster even if there is a slightly longer initial delay (or maybe I'm imaginging that). Radio 3 FLAC doesn't work of course, I expected that it's all turned off at the BBC end. I am told on the get_iplayer mailing list that when FLAC comes back for the Proms it will be for all Radio 3 output 24/7, not just the Proms. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: BBCiPlayer Plugin (UK only)
Just for the record, iPlayer v1.4.10 works fine on my WHS v1 server (LMS 7.8.0), streaming live 320kbps AAC Dash to a Receiver ie. uses transcoding. As I understand it this is just about the most troublesome combination on Windows (with the possible exception of the same combination using HLS) and yet it gives me no trouble at all. In mitigation it's an Atom N270 system ie. slow, and running XP era OS. As I understand it faster hardware and/or newer Windows both cause increasing problems which iPlayer v1.5.* aims to resolve. The reason I haven't upgraded is confusion over repos. There are so many, and the 1.5 series were all labelled "test" or "debug" initially that I couldn't work out what to install for a stable supported v1.5. As to whack-a-mole, I think the BBC have decided they only want people using Apps or the BBC web site because they have tighter control of those. They probably regret ever officially supporting third party hardware internet radios, the feed for them (which this plugin uses) probably only still exists because the BBC don't think they can get away with annoying the manufacturers. I like the idea of the plugin accumulating 7 day schedue information until it has 30 days worth. It's reasonably elegant, and it uses the official published feed for third parties so I don't see how the BBC can do something to break it. The biggest loss for me from Extras is the 30 day Listen Again window, we're down to 7 days now on the official feed which is rather paltry. Are they deliberately trying to drive users away from third party internet radios and players to get people to use Apps or the BBC web site? Because it certainly feels like it. I've started recording BBC radio programmes on my Freeview PVR again, a 7 day catchup window just isn't enough for me. This unfortunately means poorer sound quality compared to the 320kbps AAC iPlayer feeds. And I also miss the A-Z of programmes. I don't care when The Early Music Show was broadcast, I just know that's what I want to play so A-Z is easier to find it. I have an LED panel lighting my kitchen that puts annoying amounts of noise on my FM reception, even with a loft aerial. I've tried ferrite chokes on the light panel cables but to no avail. It's incredibly annoying, but at least iPlayer AAC at 320kbps sounds better than FM anyway so I'm not losing out really. FM broadcasts are distributed digitally around the transmitters using NICAM. So there is already a digital section in the middle of the transmission network, and has been since the 1980s as they started to build out the digital distribution system for FM. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer with DASH support - test version
The 365kbps is a lie. FLAC is lossless, it takes as much or as little bit rate to represent it as necessary. You can throw more cpu at the task to compress a little better, but you absolutely cannot achieve any particular target bit rate. I saw something (linked off get-iplayer mailing list probably) from the BBC saying they're seeing averages around 500kbps but there are peaks up to 1000kbps. This doesn't surprise me at all based on what my CDs rip to as FLAC.
