Have you also tried to "Update Footprint from Library"? It didn't work with
spaces in the name.

Frankly, I consider the *recognition* of spaces in a footprint name to be a
sort of bug or inferior operation. I have somewhat grudgingly accepted

Can anybody tell me what the recommended test point pad size to be used with
the GenRAD GR228xi in circuit tester is? I think were using a combo II
board.
Our manufacturing dept. wants me to use a 100 thou diameter pad which seems
quite excessive to me. I currently have a 35 thou pad.

Tim,
It really depends on what your test group requirements are, based on
quite a few things but one would be type of probe being used, even
if the tester is capable of smaller pads and spacing, also the level at
which a fixture
is made would govern that too.
But with a newer GenRad system I would
Why do components and their pads magically have coordinates that are either
xxx.999 or xxx.001? I'm working on a .5 mil grid, with a .5 mil component
grid, and a 5 mil electrical grid. It's very aggravating.

Edi,
bingo, you got it. The update failure problem was associated with
spaces (possibly other special characters) in the footprint name. I remember
well because I had to take all the spaces out of many footprints when I
first started.

Abd-ul Rahman,
how about Protel just limits the naming of footprints to allow only
legal characters and only the length limitation which functions properly.
Afterall such is just reasonable programming, disallowing illegal functions,
a new concept to Protel!
Sincerely,
Brad Velander.

It's a bug. I've been having the same problem for quite a while. I think
it may happen when the grid is changed from mils to mm and then back, but
I'm not sure.

Protel has a few problems with mm and inches. I've often seen small rounding
errors creep in, and although I don't have any evidence, I have suspected it's
got something to do with repeatedly switching the units diplayed.
I've heard hearsay that Protel prefers to work in imperial units.

Just to clarify - i have some footprints with a space in the name from 10-12
years ago; but i stopped using spaces in footprint names several years back.
I am in agreement with others that the underscore is more appropriate and
this is how I currently name new footprints. I haven't been bit by th
I've noticed those rounding errors as well.

That is exactly my proposal. The processing of names which contain spaces

When wanting a separator in names, I use the underscore '_'. Will that be a
legal character in this proposal? I hope so.
So Abdul, is your name written:
"Abdul-RahmanLomax" if upper and lower case is OK, but spaces are not.
"ABDULRAHMANLOMAX" if only uppercase is OK, and non-alphanumerics are

They have a range of sizes. Somewhat pricey, but sturdy and well

It MIGHT be an MDAC problem. Does 'compress' work on a good ddb?
Here's the link to MS's website for the Microsoft Data Access
Components(MDAC); I think Protel supports MDAC 2.5 -- I'd check the
knowledge base, too.

Can't you just set type to "Round" and have different x & y? That's how the
IC (SMT) pads in some of my footprints are defined, and it seems to work for
through-hole pads as well.

actually although the spaces are supported in winxx if used they require
the use of quotation marks so the string may be parsed when an argument
is passed

underscores and hyphens should definitely be legal characters. So should
periods and asterisks and many or most
