Re: A very silly question about recording electric guitar into Protools

2018-07-20 Thread Chris Smart
Your guitar is sending audio into your audio
interface, and that audio needs to be recorded on a track.

If you want that guitar to sound like it is
running through an amplifier, speaker cabinet,
microphone in front of the speaker cabinet etc.
you'll need an effect plugin that simulates those
parts of the chain. Your electric guitar's
signal, on its own, naked so-to-speak, will sound
totally clean, perhaps uninspiring. That's just
what your guitar sounds like, before going
through any more equipment like effects or amplifiers.

At 01:16 PM 7/20/2018, you wrote:

All,

I’ve been experimenting with recording my
acoustic guitar into ProTools and, I bet you
don’t need me to tell you, but it’s a blast.
I haven’t been having as much luck with my electric guitar, though.

I have an audio interface, but when I plug in my
guitar and set the switch to instrument, I
don’t get any sound. So I’m sure it’s a
problem on the ProTools side. So, a few questions:

To record my electric guitar in this fashion,
should I create an audio track, an instrument
track, or a midi track? So far, when I try an instrument track, I get no audio.
I have a few instruments that came as free
downloads with PT. Does this apply to electric
guitar, or do I have to use a midi controller to
be able to use these sounds? Does this question make sense?

Anyway, there’s a lot to unpack here, so if
anyone cares to mail me off list, please feel

CAUTIONARY TALE: PROTECT YOUR HEARING!

2018-04-26 Thread Chris Smart
Don't protect your hearing against loud music? This could be the
ultimate cautionarytale

I haven't read Sir George Martin's book, so I don't know if he talks
in it about losing his hearing. This may be new information, and a
cautionary tale to all of us!

Invest in high-quality earplugs for loud concerts, band practices,
etc. Take regular breaks if you monitor at very high levels.

Here's the article about Sir George:
https://tinyurl.com/ybuy4vmx

and, it isn't just musicians playing through amplifiers who need to
be smart about this. Ever sat in front of the trumpets in a big band?

From what I could find, previously one or two

I ordered this multimeter 2 or so weeks ago and
it arrived today, it was $130 including shipping to South Africa.

It’s pretty neat, they customise it according
to your needs, you can choose the voice, choose
whether you want braille markings or just dots
on top and you can also choose to get a positive
probe with a button which you push for it to talk.

If you are interested, email me off list and I

Attention aspiring musicians, producers, and songwriters who grew up

tape - no pitch correction, no snapping shit to the grid, and with
real horns! First, the song in full:

Now, let's hear some of those parts isolated and analyzed!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLoh8zHjGUI=youtu.be=

That was a huge POP hit in the 80's... does Taylor, or Sia compare?
Has what passes for pop music gotten a lot dumber in the past few
decades? Or am I just getting old and grumpy?

powered mics look for cardioid mic
patterns. One you have to be right on top of
to make sound. This will help eliminate
unwanted noise that is natural to the room you
are recording in. Large diaphragm for voice
and small diaphragm for instrument
recording. But note condenser mics don̢۪t like to to be dropped.

Ribbon mics are through the roof expensive,
are fragile, and should be handled by experienced sound engineers only.

These are just a few thoughts on mics. If you
want to go further into various mics then be a
little more precise in the purpose you are to
use mics for. Broadcast is a little vague.

Hope this helps.

For live work the dynamic Shure 58 is the

The Shure 58 can also be used in the studio
depending what sound you are going for.

My sense is that if you are asking these
questions that you are new to the home
recording studio scene. If that is the case
your mic locker should only have one mic, the
Sure 58. Over time you can bring in artists
that might have their own mics and you will be
exposed to new sounds and grow your mic needs
organically. To kick things off go with the 58.

If you are micing instruments the Sure 57 also $99 is a good one.

The 57 & 58 do not require phantom power so one
less thing to worry about. And they are rugged and last a long time.

that's good to know.

Someone should create a list of the various
popular interfaces currently available, and how
accessible they are or aren't, on both the Mac and Windows side.

desktop app before the iOS app could control
your unit. Also Focusrite support was great
about Remoting into your system to do the parts
that needed sighted assistance.

but others on here probably do. I know a number
of blind musicians using it on windows with
Jaws, Not sure about the mac world. But it is
accessible to blind people. i’ll let others
take this thread further, as this is where my knowledge of it stops. lol.

Hi everyone,

I’m asking this for a friend who currently is

He is currently using Lime on Windows, with the

But he is searching for other solutions as well.
I recommended Pro Tools, but since I’ve not
worked that much with MIDI editing in PT, I couldn’t tell him how that works.

So, is there anyone here that maybe know a bit more about this?
Is it, for example, possible to explore the
musical piece, note for note, with VO, and does
VO then anounce the name of the note?

I guess there isn’t any way to get braille music notation from PT?

If PT:s score editor isn’t effective, he even
wants to know if any of the other common score programs are accessible?

Has Avid for example worked on accessibility for Sibelius?

Many thanks for your help and have a wonderful christmas!

Kind regards,

Oh shoot Phil. So he's not even going to make it public, after he

they would get access, was able to get a copy of the program from him.

Can you point me to where one can get a copy of this OSC application for
windows accessibility?
This is why stuff like the Arturia AudioFuse and the PreSonus Quantum is
promising. All the routing is done in the DAW as the latency is low enough
now that we won't need stuff like the total mix app to keep latency down.
Of course in the case of stuff like the x32 or other mixers with fx and
internal routing for live sound etc. OSC still makes sense if its
implemented. UAD on the other hand, if their latency figures are what they
are reporting, and their plug ins can already see which UAD cards are
installed, why not just enable the native plug ins to activate Unison from
with in the DAW and ditch the UAD console. Of course if they did that we
would still need UAD to make activating demos or purchase licenses
accessible.

Implement accessibility for Mac and Windows folks you mean? Not all
blind audio professionals are using the Mac.

Another option would be to request support for OSC, Open Sound
Control protocol, similar to how RME have done with their hardware,
since we now have a utility to access that with our Windows screen
readers - hopefully soon to be ported to the Mac as well.

In the RME case, we can now fully access the hardware, the DSP, set
up all the routing etc. in RME's extensive application called TotalMix FX.

Re: Pulled the trigger on the UA Apollo8P and have a question

2017-11-22 Thread Chris Smart
Implement accessibility for Mac and Windows folks you mean? Not all
blind audio professionals are using the Mac.

Another option would be to request support for OSC, Open Sound
Control protocol, similar to how RME have done with their hardware,
since we now have a utility to access that with our Windows screen
readers - hopefully soon to be ported to the Mac as well.

In the RME case, we can now fully access the hardware, the DSP, set
up all the routing etc. in RME's extensive application called TotalMix FX.

Hello list,

Here at my work, a training center, management and I are talking
about trying to bring in an engineering training program. We are
thinking of ways to make it official in order for VR counselors to
support sending clients to the program. I am wondering if anyone has
gone through the Avid certification program and if so, was it online
or in person, what was the price and the length of time that it took
to complete.

Any thoughts on this will be appreciated.

I imagine once he got the tempo following along to the subtle tempo
changes if the right elastic audio algorithm is selected and then
all the tempo changes selected and changed to the same value the
audio should playback at the set tempo then. Just going by what I
remember from using ProTOols. The really time consuming way to do
this would be to select every actual measure of the song, split it
to its own clip, and quantize it to whatever tempo you want. I have
done something like what Chris is attempting to do in logic and
these days I am a little bit more familiar with Flex time than
ProTools elastic audio implementation so this was just suggestions
based off how I have worked around different tools not being
accessible in different DAWs over the years.

What I am aiming for here, is to find a way that I can somehow
tempo beat map the song then time stretch/collapse so that the

Re: It's paramount! that I learn this task: Tempoing

LOL Check your spelling. Ritard, spelled with an i or abbreviated rit
on a printed score, refers to the Italian term ritardando: "Gradually
decelerating the tempo of a piece of music, especially at the end of
the piece."

Retard, with an e, is well, naw, it's too easy. Oh ok, it's a term
you're not supposed to be using in 2017. (grin)

At 02:54 PM 8/8/2017, you wrote:

Mr. Smart, don't be so difficult!

1. NO, that isn't what I'm asking. I don't want to do it gradually.
Did I imply that by saying a retard? I thought a retard could be
gradual, but not necessarily. I need it to directly go straight from
84 to 64. I don't need a gradual declination. Would that not be
considered then a retard? If not, then sorry. Maybe someone with a
little theory background can set me straight on that term. I'm
willing to learn.

2. Yes, Chris, paramount. I have a click track in this recording. If
I don't change the tempo, then it'll get out of sync, so yes. It's paramount.

You know, for a professional, dude, you could be a bit more
respectful with your words, thank you very much, sir!

If you didn't wanna help, then why did you waist list traffic with
unnecessary comments! Slau, tell me you agree! I'm sure you do!
You're a reasonable enough guy, I'd think, or, at least hope.

Guys,

I know this has been discussed before, but I'm seeming to not be

Hopefully, one of you all can tell me step by step the process to
make this work.

In ProTools, here's what we got going here.

I've got the song She's Not Cryin' Anymore by Billy Ray Cyrus,
which I've arranged totally by hand from scratch.

For those of you who don't know the structure of this song, it's
OK. I'm gonna explain, don't worry.

The song is your basic slow country 4/4 signature song which I am
doing in the key of B mager. Don't ask why not C. That's irrelavent.

Anyway, I'm doing the song with an 84BPM constant tempo. That is...

Up until the very very last tag of the song. The ending where he
repeats the phrase:

There's a smile upon her face, a new one takes my place, she's not
cryin' anymore.

On the word any more, on more, specifically, the song ends by going
to the root chord which of corse is B, then to the 4, which is E,
then back down to a single held B chord to end the song.

What happens here is once that bar hits, which is at bar 77, and
carries to the end of the song at bar 78, so basically, those last
two bars of the song, there is a retard. So, normally, again, the
song is at 84BPM. What I want is starting at bar 77, and finnishing
the whole rest of the session, I want the tempo to constantly drop
from the constant 84BPM down to 64BPM.

Yes, I do have a click track in this song, and I have ProTools set
to give me a 2 bar count in. Note that this count in is not
actually recorded into the song. I'm using numpad 7 to turn on the
click track, then numpad 8 to toggle on the count in.

Any help with this would be appreciated. In the long run, I'm gonna
have to teach my student how to do this. So, better I learn now,
before we get to that point, that way, I'm prepared.

Chris.

I’d say point out the things you did here,
without being negative or saying you suck.
Something like your vocals are off key and that
they should consider collaborating with
vocalist. You can also explain that to your more
experienced ears it sounds over compressed and
muddy or etc. No need to get into the technical
details you got into in your email as it sounds
like he isn’t to a experience level with
productions where that would mean much to him
yet. The thing is if they are doing this for fun
and to keep themselves busy, then its up to them
if they work on getting better or not. If they
wants to get to a point where they wants to do
this professionally however, then they’d need
to consider more experienced opinions at some point.

He wanted my opinion on his mix, etc.

First off, the guy is almost 2 whole steps off
key. I know, as I know very well the song that
he recorded. This isn't him using
improvization. It's more truely him being off
the correct note or anything there close.

Secondly, his vocals clipped horribly. With no
processing or anything, the meters are showing him at positive 9.3DB.

On his reverb, he ran both the wet, and the dry
mix at 100%, so he sounds like he's in the
grand cannyon. Plus, he's got major major
headphone bleedover, so bad, I almost can make
out each note individually from the karaoke track he used.

When he hits the higher notes, he's singing
from his throat, I can tell, as he's straining
badly, and literally almost shouting.

On the compressor, he used a 8/1 with the
attack as fast as the compressor plug would let
him, and the attack as slow as it would. Then,
he set the threshold at negative 14DB, which
obviously means he's squashing the living shit
out of things! Worse is, he not only did this
on his vocal, but he then reduplicated it on
the master fader as well. Aaa, my aching! ears!

Finally, he turned up all frequencies around 60HZ by about 5 DB.

When I told him this needed a lot of work,
being he wanted my honest opinion, he says he
cannot hear the things I'm talking about nor
how it negatively effected the mix.

This guy's been through a lot of emotional
psychological trauma, which so've I, so I know
how it feels. I don't wanna tell him this
sounds like utter F***ing shit, but, that said,
this is about the 5th song he's sent me like
this. I just don't think he's cut out for a
vocalist let alone a producer. OK, who 'em I to
judge! I know, I know, I'm not the greatest
myself, but at least I listen and try taking
advice when people give it, hince why I've
improved as much over the years as I have. This
guy simply won't take any advice I nor anyone
else give him. He didn't pay me to listen, he
just asked me as a friend to tell him. He's not
expecting me to do this as him being a client.

So, client or not, what's the best way with
love, mind you, to more politely say, Jane Doe? You absolutely suck!

Surely some of you all have had vocalists or
musicians who you listenned to, who you had to
turn down the job from as they just weren't
seen as fit for it. They just didn't have what it would take.

How do you let those guys off easy, without
being a nasty Simon Cowell the second? My
christian morrals won't let me lie, but if I
say what I really think, it's gonna break his

Re: New to the list with a few questions

2017-07-23 Thread Chris Smart
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe ProTools was one of the first
DAW's. As such, many studios invested in it, which meant also buying
some rather expensive hardware for hosting plugins etc. Anyone else
remember those inflated prices for Waves TDM plugins? Things were
vastly different in the 1990's.
I think it's a matter of ProTools were one of the first, so captured
the pro market.

While many, probably most studios, still use it - and by studio I
mean somewhere you would physically go record, in a big room -
people with less traditional set ups are using all kinds of things,
including Logic, Sonar, Cubase, Reaper, Studio 1, Harrison Mix Bus,
Samplitude, and probably several others.

I'd love to know what ProTools' market share is now. I bet it's still
pretty big, but who knows how long that will last.

What makes ProTools the industry standard, and why is it that you
all use ProTools?

Why won't reaper or any daw ever replace ProTools? Thanks for your time.

RE: Cable- signaltest

2017-07-03 Thread Chris Smart
Can you nudge a track in ProTools by a specified number of
milliseconds or even individual samples? If so, get both tracks
playing and nudge one until they sound correct.

At 05:33 AM 7/3/2017, you wrote:

Hi Slau!

Thank you for the files.

My current "problem" is that I realized phase issues when listening
back to guitar recordings.

One track recorded via mic and another via di.

When now phase shifting one of those tracks the low frequencies are
represented much better.

So I'm thinking about if this is the normal physic - the mic signal
takes longer to be recorded than than the di signal.
Or is one of the stages between my guitar and the track in pro tools
phase shifted.

Guitar pre amp out, cable from guitar into the di, the di, the xlr
cable into the patchbay, the patchbay, the xlr cable into the soundcard.

Or maybe a stage on the mic side...
Or both? :-)

For sorting this out I was searching for some tools.

Talking to sighted people they zoom into the desired tracks by 100 %
and compare the waveforms.

So they can see if the shifting is 90 degrees or something else.
Then they move the two tracks exactly that way, that their waveforms
are congruent.

Using the phase shifting tool in e.g. the 7 band eq always shifts by
90 degrees.

Better than nothing but maybe to much.

I hope that you could understand my thoughts.

a stereo output from say a keyboard or fx unit

to capture the stereo output of said device you
usually won’t have phase issues then.
The stuff that can cause phase issues in mixing
is usually plug ins that mess with the stereo

mix to mono, (once again either on your
interface or from with in the DAW) and see if
any instruments or sounds that you hear in stereo disappear in the mix.

Re: Cable- signaltest

learn to detect phase problems by ear.

For example, can you tell when one channel of a stereo pair is out of
phase, such as having the wires reversed on one of your speakers?

Basically, the center of the stereo image seems to disappear. I
almost feel it like a pressure in my head.

Other phase issues will resonate at a particular frequency if you sum
the two channels to mono. (comb filtering)

Re: Waves VoiceOver Accessibility up date.

So this accessibility work, laudible as it is, applies only to Mac folks?

Re: Go-to reverb

ValhallaDSP's Vintage Verb is excelent and only $50. All of their
reverbs are worth having: Vintage, Room, Plate and Shimmer.

had to choose just one go-to reverb plug-in, to use with PT, for
quality first, and accessibility too, which one would you recommend,
and a rough price and website would be really helpful too if easy to do please.

Whilst writing, I just have to add my heartfelt thanks and
appreciation to Slau, Chi and the others for Flotools 2.2. It rocks.

I find companies respond very quickly to tweets. Perhaps contact them on
Twitter and move it to DM, and ask for a contact person to email directly?

Re: Pitch Matching Tapes in ProTools

2017-05-29 Thread Chris Smart
Oh wow! LOL Sorry about that. I had only heard a few demos and had
not seen an actual price.

Apparently, one can "rent" it for five days for US $199. Yikes!

Perhaps they think they'll only sell a few copies to large
institutions digitizing many many tape recordings, so those few sales
have to count? Who knows what their thinking is.

Re: waves vocal override plugin

2017-04-29 Thread Chris Smart
ok, I shall refrain from posting. I only read
here because I like seeing what accessibility
developments are taking place in the Mac world,
and I enjoy being on a mailing list to do with
music production that actually has professionals
on it, and a decent enough signal-to-noise ratio.
Sorry for contributing to the noise portion.

As this is a Pro Tools access list dealing with
VoiceOver, yes, of course, it's off topic. So
why bring it up? Why add comments like, "Well,

some Windows accessibility liist and say, "Well,
over on the Mac side…" Would that help the Windoows users?
Come to think of it, Chris, you don't use or
even own Pro Tools. Why do you bother following along here? Just curious.
