2017-03-24 Thread Lori Michaelson
Thanks for all the info Greg! I have heard of the Camelbac but never needed
one. Just one more thing on my list of things to do but if I want it or
need it bad enough... obviously I will find a way somehow. I am trying to
cut down on expenses but, every time I do, it's time to order this or that
or the other thing.

Thanks again!

Camelbac is no issue, IV tube can be. I just sucked until water got to tip, then breathed, and started drinking. You get the hang of it after a few sips.

I don't like my head covered, but pull the blankets over my ears and eyes.
I use a spring clip to clip the blanket to my bottom sheet, other wise as I move around, if slides down.
I sleep slightly turned and can get my top arm uncovered and sometimes covered back up.  Having it clpped helps.
I often wear a fleace hat or ear muffs when its colder.

The nice thing about the tube, either IV tube straw, or Camelbak, you an keep it under coves with you. I even wore a sweat band and had the IV tube under it. To hold it to my wrist.

Danny,

I too use a CamelBak in bed at night. I have use of my arms so I can reach
the tube and get it to my mouth but I feel

The tube could be clipped near your head as long as you can turn your head.

This may not work for you Danny but the C4-5 quad I worked for has a T- shaped
microphone stand with a tripod base that holds a water valve next to his mouth.

It's cumbersome but it was already in place to hold his microphone which is
kept about 1/2 an inch from his mouth while in bed to control his ECU for (
lights, thermostat, tv, and opening back door).

We used this same mic stand to hang a Camel Bak brand water bag with the tubing
running alongside the arm of the stand and attached wit narrow Velcro straps.

The Bite valve is at the end of his microphone close to his mouth and secured
with a rubber band.

I put the bladder of the camel bak in a nylon bag that has 2 handles like a
plastic grocery bag. Actually a grocery bag might work just as well.

I threaded the handles of the nylon bag on the top loop of the camel Bak bag so
it wouldn't just flop over or fold on itself.

The nylon holder hangs by the two handles right where the top or horizontal
part ( arm ) of the stand meets the vertical post ( leg ) of the stand.

I put a hole at the bottom of the nylon bag and put the tube through this hole.

The arm of the stand is adjusted up or down until it's at the right level each
nite depending on the head of the bed.

He has two of the 100 oz. Camel Bak bladders called the Antidote that Greg
mentioned so one can be washed and hung to dry.

If you want cleaning tablets they are cheaper at Walmart sporting good section
but a tip is to use denture tablets for routine cleaning which is cheaper still
unless you use dish soap.

We tried the cheaper Walmart Ozark brand water bladders but the Bite valve was
straight in-line with the tubing making it harder to access and it also dripped.

The Camel Bak brand brand bite valve is not only drip free as Greg mentioned
but it's also the only one that I knew of at the time ( it's been a few years )
that had the valve at a 90 degree angle to the tubing making it easier to
access.

Also the cap opening was large enough to put my whole hand into it to clean the
bladder thoroughly.

Of course the set up with the mic stand only works for bedtime but you can turn
it around and position it to be accessible when in your chair but it's easy run
into to and knock over.

When in his chair he uses the portable set up Randy mentioned with the Loc Line
modular hose somehow rigged with connectors and with smaller tubing that would
go through the Loc line and then reconnect to the camelback somehow.

It was made by someone in the Rehab Technology department at Craig Hospital and
cost about $130 or so maybe $150 when he had surgery a few years ago.

What I'm wondering is if the instructions for making this device could be
emailed if requested by calling the free Nurse Hotline at the hospital if it's
not proprietary.

There are also photos of products made with what looks like this flexible Loc
Line product on the Broadened Horizons website.

I think the tubing that can go inside of the Loc Line is the kind used for
ice-makers that you can get at the hardware store but I'm not sure.

Somehow there's gotta be a way for everyone to access water at night!

I'm looking forward to checking out these web sites that Joan sent like the
instructables!

I hope something works out for you soon.

I have 2 of the inferior Walmart brand bladders never used and a cleaning set
that I'll be glad to mail to anyone who needs them.

Hello Denny
I'm a c4/5 complete with no movement from the neck down. For drinking I use a
Camelbac (that's a brand, there are others) on the back of my wheelchair and
also in bed when necessary. You can find them on the Internet. They come in
sizes, I used the hundred ounce. I attach it to the sip-puff tube on the
wheelchair. When in bed I use a product called Loc-line, also on the Internet,
for mounting the tubing so I can reach it during the night.
I also use the Loc-line for mounting a sip and puff tube to answer/call with my
phone.
I do use Dragon Natural Speaking on the computer, ECU's on the wheelchair for
front door opener and telephone, but for now that's about all the electronics I
use.

Hello Denny
I'm a c4/5 complete with no movement from the neck down. For drinking I use
a Camelbac (that's a brand, there are others) on the back of my wheelchair
and also in bed when necessary. You can find them on the Internet. They
come in sizes, I used the hundred ounce. I attach it to the sip-puff tube
on the wheelchair. When in bed I use a product called Loc-line, also on the
Internet, for mounting the tubing so I can reach it during the night.
I also use the Loc-line for mounting a sip and puff tube to answer/call
with my phone.
I do use Dragon Natural Speaking on the computer, ECU's on the wheelchair
for front door opener and telephone, but for now that's about all the
electronics I use.

I get most of my shirts from a place called handcuffs.net, they are
generally $20 apiece but if you watch for their sales you can generally get them
a lot cheaper, I have gotten mine for as little as $6.66 . They not only have
longsleeved T-shirts, longsleeve poll over sweatshirts, zip up front
sweatshirts... they are not only longsleeved but the handcuffs around your thumb
and fingers so your seams don't get twisted, that is a big annoyance of mine.
The ones that I use during the day I split halfway up my back so they fit better
and the ones that I use at night I split all the way up the back. They also keep
your hands a little warmer during the winter.

Jim,I am interested in to know how you are able to use two leg bags at the same time. The primary reason I do not use these type of bags is because they do not have enough volume capacity. Additionally, I used to lie back too much and my urine wasn't flowing downhill enough. This is one I used to have chronic UTIs. Now I wear a bed bag on the side of the chair. This bag has been cut down so I don't have excess tubing and am able to cover it sufficiently for aesthetic purposes.Billy[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Billy,

I sent my son to the auto store to find a plastic tee and a 90 degree elbow
that would be used for vacuum lines on vehicles. He could not find a 90
degree elbow so he purchased two plastic tees. I had him lay two 1000 CC
leg bags side-by-side. We took short pieces of latex tubing and connected
to the two bags together. The tee that is not connected to your catheter,
must have a short piece of latex tubing long enough to be folded over and taped
to prevent the urine from flowing out the top. You can also purchase a
plastic or rubber cap that fits over the end of the tee from the auto parts
store.I can tell whenI have to urinate so, I make sure I tilt
myself down so theurine flows downhill as much as possible.I have my
leg bags strapped to my shin down by my ankle. Here is asimple

Another side effect ofedema. Is the pressure buildup on your
nerves in your legs in feet causing them to tingle continuously. I start
having these feelings almost immediately after I am placed in my
wheelchair. If I tilt back for any length of time the feeling might lessen
but then it comes back short left are going back down. It's just another
thing that we have to deal with.

Jim I wear condom caths too and change mine almost every day to ensure no problems the most important thing is no kinks for me, I very seldom have any problems and after changing it a few times it's very quick to do after all it's just a condom how complicated can it be.
Now if you sweat a lot you'll have problems andI'll sweat if I'm ill or somethings wrong but besides that it's the best move I've madeso far because those indwelling are a nightmare to deal with and kept me supplied with UTI's for 2 years no way I'd go back.

works very well. dave

Jim I wear condom caths too and change mine almost every day to
ensure no problems the most important thing is no kinks for me, I very
seldom have any problems and after changing it a few times it's very
quick to do after all it's just a condom how complicated can it
be.
Now if you sweat a lot you'll have problems andI'll sweat if
I'm ill or somethings wrong but besides that it's the best move I've
madeso far because those indwelling are a nightmare to deal with
and kept me supplied with UTI's for 2 years no way I'd go back.

I also wear a condom catheter and have way over 50% success.
I have my catheter changed every 36 hours or when needed. I am so
diligent on telling my PCA is to make sure that my catheter is untwisted
and that the tubing is run straight as possible. I also make sure
that when I urinate while in my wheelchair that I am kept all the way
forward to make sure everything flows downhill and I also where two 1000
CC leg bags.

Plus my urologist said that when your up in the chair, liquids settle in the lower parts of your body. When you lay flat or have you legs elevated the fluid evens out and causes more peeing. I don't know if she was just appeasing me or not

This is true. While we sit our lymph nodes are getting restricted causing exactly that.

You tend to see it in the ankle area first. That's why most doctors feel thereduring check-ups.

Stop drinking after a certain time. If I
recall you just had bladder surgery as I did. I sleep through the night
but it required time/training my bladder.

Well, get used to it.:D Unless you put a catheter in, tape it in place and
have it attached to a bed bag, you will be peeing every 3-4 hours. Actually
thats good. I wake up naturally now every 2 hours if I need to or not. If
I sleep for 3-4 hours that is a luxury! I do do a good amount of drinking
at night. Plus my urologist said that when your up in the chair, liquids
settle in the lower parts of your body. When you lay flat or have you legs
elevated the fluid evens out and causes more peeing. I don't know if she
was just appeasing me or not, but I 'always' pee more at night.
take care,

Dana

Dana- what the doctor told you about that is correct, my doctors in
rehab spinal cord injury class taught us all that. Most will go more laying down
for nap or at night.
