[q] Vintage Macs list on Google Groups

2006-02-22 Thread Dan Knight
Members of the Compact Macs, Quadlist, and Vintage Macs list on
Maclaunch,

This is the final message posted to these lists. These lists have been
replaced by a unified Vintage Macs list on Google Groups that covers
all 680x0-based Macs.

The Vintage Macs list FAQ has been updated to reflect the two ways you
should be able to join the new list on Google Groups if you haven't
already done so. There is an email subscription method, but it has very
limited options.

The best way to join the group is online, and this allows you to choose
digest mode and also browse postings online. There may be problems with
some browsers, but most vintage Mac users also have access to newer
computers, so that shouldn't be a problem.

If you absolutely can't get subscribed, please email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to let me know that you wish to join the Vintage
Macs list on Google Groups. Be sure to include your preferred email
address and subscription mode (messages, digest, summary, or no email).

We already have 258 of you on the new list. I'm hoping to see more of
you there soon.

  Fellow Mac lovers,

  1. You can manage your subscription. Change mode.
  Unsubscribe. Set to

  3. No more [EMAIL PROTECTED] WARNING messages.

I *think* that this might be a bug in Mozilla. I ass-ume you're using the

In the case of gmail, though, I encountered the same problem you did. I had
selected the disable cookies option before faffing about with gmail. Even
after I enabled cookies and left the browser wide open, I still got the same

So has it come to the point where even an email list about vintage macs

 saying goodbye as well.

I dunno about the latest borwser bit. WaMCom Mozilla turns 3 years old in
July this year (if I'm not mistaken). In Internet terms, it's ancient.

As much as I enjoy wringing the most out my older hardware, it seems that
there's a point of diminishing returns. Me, I'm hoping I can use the WaMCom

be Wishful Thinking on my part because there are already some things I can't
do with it. :/

[q] Moving to Google Groups

2006-01-30 Thread Dan Knight
After reading discussion over the weekend, let me clarify a few things.

Google Groups functions as an email group, so the format of posting and
receiving messages can be exactly the same as you're used to. In
addition, you can read, search, and reply to messages online, something
you couldn't do with our old email system.

Nobody is required to use Google/Gmail to join the list. You can use
any email address. And better yet, you can now control your own
subscription - single message mode, digest, even set it to no email
when you go on vacation. Or you could just read online if you prefer.

Some people are having problems posting via email, just as has been the
case with Maclaunch. Your email address has to match the subscribed one
- most list servers won't see [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] as
the same thing. If you have trouble posting, check the headers to see
how your From: and Reply-to: are configured.

There have been some objections to Google based on their willingness to
provide a restricted search engine in China (among other countries) and
abide by national laws rather than opt out of the Chinese market. If
you want to boycott Google, consider that Apple Computer, General
Motors, and most international businesses also elect to work within the
constraints of Chinese law so they can reach the Chinese market and/or
use Chinese labor.

Neither Google nor the Chinese government puts any restrictions on the
political views of participants of our email lists. We chose Google
Groups because the provide a much more flexible service with greater
user control than any of the mail list software we've run across.

Further, politics is explicity listed as an area not to be debated on
our lists, along with religion and Windows advocacy. We are building
helpful Mac communities, so we try to avoid divisive issues.

It is off-topic to comment on the politics of google.

And to deliberately retain the subject is asking for trouble IMHO.

I will send Simon a copy of the rules so he can read for himself. Anyone
else should go to the Low end macs website as noted in the footers.

So far nobody's been banned. All further on-list comments will be though,

[q] Moving to Google Groups

2006-01-27 Thread Dan Knight
Fans of 680x0 Macs, we've successfully launched our first two email
lists using Google Groups - one for Macintel models and one for the Mac
mini.

As of this afternoon, we've turned off our three Maclone lists, which
have also transitioned to Google Groups.

Advantages: You can browse messages online, where they are threaded.
You can manage your subscription yourself. Lots more room for the
archive. And Google Groups doesn't automatically include your email
address in your postings.

Today we begin moving Compact Macs, Vintage Macs, and Quadlist to
Google Groups. Google Groups will not replace the current lists until
early next week, but I wanted to give everyone a chance to subscribe.

To join the list and set your mode (single messages, digest, etc.),
point your browser to http://groups.google.com/group/vintage-macs

When the list goes live, [EMAIL PROTECTED] will be the
posting address. I'm updating the Vintage Macs List FAQ to reflect
these changes.

I look forward to seeing most of you there next week.

Dan Knight, listmom

Re: [q] Moving to Google Groups

2006-01-27 Thread Al Winfrey

Steve,

I'm willing to give the Google Groups a try. I have avoided reflectors
in the past because they seemed to attract spam but this service
appears better protected. Macs are neat and I've used them since 1986
or so but they are more fun when one can converse with others who also
appreciate them.

The second thing is that with the choice of message delivery methods,
we can now adjust the mail flow into our mail boxes and that is much
better. If one goes out of town for a few days one can turn off mail
flow or put into digest form without leaving the list. Most of the time
I prefer to read it from the web and not mess with regular email but
the choice is still there.

I signed up with Google a few minutes ago and look forward to full
activation. One thing is that I didn't mention is that I haven't
tried it with the Quadra or with one of the older SE's from my herd of
Macs. We'll see how it works with them a little later.

cheers!

which

have also transitioned to Google Groups.

A lot of discussion activities have moved to web forum formats, which
I am not fond of either. Some do retain the email type capabilities
and I think Google groups does. Perhaps those of us that like will
find new messages from people who like like a forum based messages.

At the age of our Macs forums or email probably serves more for
camaraderie than for support. It has been a long time since I have
had trouble with my Quadra 840. There remains things I wish with it
though. With the way the internet is moving perhaps soon the old
Quadras will be the last place where we have local data.

[q] New Low End Mac email lists

2006-01-20 Thread Dan Knight
We've created some new email lists, but they're different from the old
ones. We're using Google Groups, which means you can sign up, change
your status, and read postings using your browser.

I hope to eventually move other lists to Google Groups as well.

The Macintel list, which covers all Intel-based Macs, went live last
week and has 57 members. Once the MacBook Pro ships, we're ready to
launch the MacBook List. I've also set up a Mac mini List.

Details:

Macintel List:
http://groups.google.com/group/macintel
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Mac mini List:
http://groups.google.com/group/Mac-mini-list
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

MacBook List:
http://groups.google.com/group/macbook-list
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

You can join any of these lists, but the MacBook List will not go live
until the MacBooks start shipping in February. Until then, all
Mac-on-Intel discussion should be on the Macintel List.

still works. I looked hard for a replacement but couldn't find one.

The utility showed up in every 'Open' and 'Save' dialogue screen and
did wonderful things. You had several options to change the order
folders, documents and drives appeared in: By date, by size, by name,
etc . . . You could also make a list of favorite documents or folders
that were always there to go to. You could change the number of 'last
used' documents and folders at will. You could delete, duplicate and
find from that same dialogue window in any application.

I think the best thing it did was let you put the folders first or last
in the list. (I tried in OS 10.3 but I changed the finder windows only
and didn't find an option to show the list by date nor the dialogues in
any other program.)

So is there anything that sweet, and simple, for OS 10? I'm spending a

places to put stuff.

[q] OT - Wireless Access Point info

2006-01-18 Thread Don Wakefield
This post is a bit off topic, but I hope someone can
help.

I have a House Branded Wireless Access Point
purchased at CompUSA approximately 2 years ago (when
they were blowing out the 802.11B only products to
make room for the 802.11G's) At first, since I was
the only kid on the block with wireless, I set it up
naked and ran without wired equivalent protection
settings. Recently I have noticed another signal in
the neighborhood and it is now time that I locked my
unit down!

The problem is that in the two years since installing
it and letting it sit, the unit no longer responds to
the password I gave it. My guess is that it has
regressed to the default settings possibly from one of
our past power outages. I have pushed the reset button
on the unit, (just to be sure we were starting from
scratch,) and now need to have the Default password
to get in. Naturally I cannot find the instruction
manual and I am hoping that somebody in the group will
have a similar unit and will be able to provide me
with the missing password. Any ideas on how to start
over would be appreciated.

This is what I know about the unit:

   MAC address: 0008A1425AD7 DA
   CompUSA SKU: 295105

My guess is that it was originally made by CNet
Technologies
(but they no longer admit to any products before

'admin'/'admin' is pretty standard. If worse comes to worse, you could
pop open the case and look at the internals, from there you can figure
out the chipset manufactuer and search for other routers with the same
chipset (they may be the exact same one in a different package) and see
if they provide documentation for default admin. Also, to make sure it
is reset, hold onto the reset button for a while.

Subject: [q] OT - Wireless Access Point info

MAC address: 0008A1425AD7 DA CompUSA SKU: 295105

My guess is that it was originally made by CNet
Technologies
(but they no longer admit to any products before
G's.)

Re: [q] Replacement Hard Drive for a Preforma LC 575

2005-12-24 Thread Brett Forrester

Michael,

Be sure also to check (or just replace since it's inexpensive) the
PRAM battery. This is located on the motherboard and provides power
to maintain necessary info for startup, like date and time, etc. If I
recall correctly, the 575, like the 630 series, uses an alkaline,
instead of a longer life lithium, PRAM battery, and if that battery
is shot, various odd startup problems can also result. Be sure to
consult the archived info on the Low End Mac site about the 575 for
additional information.

Good luck!

Brett

Re: [q] Replacement Hard Drive for a Preforma LC 575

2005-12-24 Thread Matthew Lawrence
Changing the PRAM battery might be a helpful solution, in this case. A
severly weak PRAM battery can cause a whole host of performance
problems, from file corruption to funky hardware behavior. This might
also be a cheaper solution than a replacement HDD, and you're not really
out anything to change the PRAM battery, if your problem does turn out
to be a bad/non-existent HDD. In this case, either way you're simply
buying future performance insurance by changing the battery.

A flashing question mark on startup means that the computer is unable
to find a suitable operating system to boot from. That might mean the
hard drive is bad, but it might also mean that the OS is missing or
corrupt.

You can try and start from either a boot floppy or from a CD. If it
starts and a hard drive icon appears on the desktop you would simply
need to install or reinstall an OS on the computer.

If you do need a hard drive for your computer, the low end swap list

Re: [q] Replacement Hard Drive for a Preforma LC 575

2005-12-23 Thread Chuck Bush
It certainly could be the hard drive, but it is not necessarily. The
question mark means the system simply cannot find a start up system. Do you
have an internal or external CD drive? Start the system with a OS CD, and
see if the hard drive mounts. You may just need to reinstall the Operating
System. When I maintained many of those in a school district, they often
forget how to use their operating systems, and I had to reinstall to totally
fix them.

Re: [q] Replacement Hard Drive for a Preforma LC 575

2005-12-23 Thread Chuck Bush
The reason I mentioned an external CD drive is often the stock CD drive that
came with the LC575 was not fast enough to boot the computer. Also, you
would do much better to start it up with a system 8, 8.6, or 9 (not 9.1 or
higher) CD than system 7. Even if you eventually reinstall system 7, I have
found the other OS CDs to be much better on emergency startup and repair.

If you do get it going with a CD, you probably should reformat the HD (Drive
Setup program on the CD), and then reinstall the system. You can run the
System 7 CD in the built in CD Player, while an external CD Player is your
startup drive. I have then found it helps to restart with the CD again after
installing the new system, holding down the option and command keys to
rebuild the desktop folder before actually starting the computer with your
new system.

Again, you may indeed have a bad hard drive, but if it is something else,
replacing the HD may not solve your problem.

Being a 68k, the LC575 will only go as high as 8.1.

The OP should probably open the back panel and look to see if there
is a HDD in there at all.

Given the symptoms, I would suggest disconnecting that internal hard
drive and trying again to boot from floppy or CD. When it freezes at
Welcome to Mac it may be attempting to access the broken or scrambled
internal drive. Or the floppy drive may be dirty (a common problem easily
remedied by an ordinary floppy cleaning disk).

I assume the OP knows that it will attempt to boot from any floppy
automatically, but you generally have to hold down the C key or
Cmd-Opt-Shift-Delete to get it to ignore the hard drive and attempt to
boot from the CD.

The 575 uses a SCSI hard drive, typically 250M in the original. I have
plenty of these and the OP can contact me off-list to buy one. The hard
drive and battery are the most likely components to fail on Macs of this
vintage; battery failure does not prevent the 575 from booting.

... i have been told that if it can not find a hard

Not correct.

I've booted many a 580 and several 575's from CD without ever seeing this

Thanks for the tips Bill,

It will boot without an HD. But I have run into a few cases where it
wouldn't boot with a corrupted HD.

So try disconnecting the HD and then booting from FD or CD. If it
does boot then you can try (if possible) this:

Leave the data cable connected to the HD but leave the power cable off.
Boot from FD or CD.
Connect the power cable to the HD.
Launch Drive Setup.

Then Either

Try mounting the drive.
See if the drive is accessible.
Update the driver on the disk (sometimes the problem is a corrupt driver).

or

Format the drive.

[q] Changing stuff in finder folders.

2005-12-22 Thread Ron 'Hollywood' Parro

Just one more before Christmas.

When I was administering a large Mac network at a newspaper I had a
little utility that I was sure was the most important thing on my
computer(s).

The utility was Directory Assistance from Symantec. They quit
supporting it about three system upgrades before my current 9.x but it
still works.

I'm spending a
lot of time moving around on the desktop looking for stuff and finding
places to put stuff.

OS X should offer Internet sharing. (Look for the Sharing preference
pane.) You would probably need a second ethernet interface to get the
Quadra on, though.

Can you describe your current network topology? 'I have a machine running
OS X and I have a Quadra' does not provide enough information. How are
they presently connected? What is connected to what, if anything? (Is the
OS X machine connected to the Internet? If so, how? DSL/cable modem?
Dial-up? Do you have a router? A hub? A switch? Describe your network
setup.)

3) Tell it to share the connection FROM the first (original) ethernet
device TO the second (new) ethernet device.

That should be all that's required?

Although, what does your network topology look like right now? You gave
very few details, so I'm going to GUESS that you have your Mac plugged
directly into a cable modem or DSL modem, with no 'router', right?

OS X should offer Internet sharing. (Look for the Sharing preference
pane.) You would probably need a second ethernet interface to get the
Quadra on, though.

I do not need to connect to the Internet. Just share files between
the PB and the 630. The PB is running 10.4.3. The Beige is running
10.4.3 using xPostFacto. The iMac G5 is running 10.4.3. The 630 is

The simple answer used to be to activate AppleTalk on both machines,
enable file sharing on the Quadra, and connect to the Quadra from the
OS X machine (which is what I do with my Performa 630CD running 8.1
and iBook running Jaguar). HOWEVER, I believe I read that Tiger
eliminated AppleTalk as a connection option--I'm not sure. See if you
can find Make AppleTalk active as an option under the Ethernet
settings in your Network control pane on the OS X machine. If so,
you're in luck. Otherwise, I think you have to go through TCPIP, but
I'm not sure of the details. Can anyone else lend us a figurative
hand?

Good luck!

hooked a q800 running 8.1 to a sawtooth running some version of jaguar, they
were connected through a switch

it was simplest thing I ever did, selected the G4 in the chooser like usual

on jaguar it took me a while to figure out that it considered my q800 a server,
but apart from that it just turned up in the chooser equivalent - no special
settings or anything

dunno if that helped

2005-12-14 Thread Ron 'Hollywood' Parro

Please allow me to jump in and ask a question.
I am trying to do the same thing and it worked once but won't work now.
File sharing is on, local talk is on, both Macs are running through
the same router.
I have Panther on a PowerBook G4 and 8.6 on the Performa. Where am I
going wrong?

Before I go completely nutz.

Some time ago apple released updates for Open transport, 3.8? sorry may
well be wrong.
Anywho, these allow appletalk via tcp which is required for 10.4 and
includes needed updates which are also required to connect, for example,
a connect to server button in the chooser which is very handy for
finding shares not visable in the chooser pane.
I havent done this for a while so its from memory. you will need to make
appletalk active on the osx mac, you may need to entre the osx's ip
address to connect, a icon should appear in the chooser pane.
A badly configured netatalk server wont show a icon in the chooser pane
on a os7.5.x/OT machine but can still be accessed by entering the
servers ip address, I imagine the same under OSX 10.4.

Open transport works from os7.1.
I'm not fond of it but it has its uses.

Re: [q] Centris 650 Problems

2005-12-08 Thread Jeff Walther

Date: Tue, 6 Dec 2005 16:56:46 -0800 (PST)
From: Nick [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [q] Centris 650 Problems

I was hoping someone could give me some suggestions
for a sick Centris 650. I had it in storage for a
while and before I put it in, it worked great. Once I
took it out, however, I couldn't get it to turn on at
all. It appears to be dead. I can't get the fan to
come on or get a chime or anything. As far as I can
tell, everything is fine. I even pulled the SIMMs to
see if that would help. I also replaced the PRAM
battery and nothing worked. At this point, I am at a
loss.

At any rate, I would appreciate any suggestions or
tips anyone can offer me on getting this Centris 650
back from the grave. I'd hate to scrap it as it's a
fine machine.

Most likely the some capacitors in the power supply or on the
motherboard have given up the ghost. Examine the motherboard
carefully for a slightly dark discoloration around the area where the
power supply plugs into the MB. If it looks like there's a cola
stain on there, then your surface mount electrolytic capacitors (look
like tiny silver storage tanks) have leaked their electrolyte onto
the board.

If the MB caps have leaked you could have three problems. The
electrolyte is somewhat conductive and can cause shorts. This is
corrected by cleaning the MB. Some folks run them through the
dishwasher, but I recommend a careful scrubbing with 91% isopropyl
alcohol (or spray with Flux remover and scrub). A soft bristle or
worn out toothbrush is good for scrubbing.

The electrolyte is corrosive and may have eaten through traces,
solder joints or vias (conductive holes through the motherboard) on
the motherboard. If this is the case, you would need to identify the
damaged area and either resolder damaged solder joints or bypass with
wire wrap (for damaged traces or vias).

There are about four of these caps that are important to the power-on
circuitry. If those caps stop working, then the machine won't stay
on. However, this problem more commonly has the symptom that the
machine powers on for a moment and then turns off. If these caps are
dead then you need to replace them. If you have leaky caps, you
really ought to replace them all anyway, because they could continue
to leak. If you use two 15W soldering pencils (Radio Shack $10
each) it is easy to remove the surface mount caps. Just apply one
pencil to each side and gently lift the cap when it comes loose.

Alternatively, your power supply may be history. Again, the
electrolytic capacitors in the supply are the most likely culprit,
but this time you'd be dealing with through-hole caps rather than
tiny surface mount caps. Replacing the caps in the power supply
might fix it.

You can use the power supply from the following Macs in the Centris
650: Mac IICX, IICI, IIvi, IIvx, Q700, C650, Q650, PM7100.

Motherboards for the Centris 650 are not uncommon on Ebay and
generally under $15. You can also use the motherboard from a Quadra
650 or a Q800. Your CPU chip is almost certainly still fine, so you
could even get a MB with no CPU and just move it over, which might
save you a bit. I like the seller, Olde Mac Milt (olde-mac-milt),
so you might contact him and see if he has a C or Q650 motherboard
available.

Oops, just checked and it looks like he's in the process of moving.

There motherboard and power supply are perfectly
clean. No dark stains.

Most likely the some capacitors in the power supply

As far as I can tell, all the capacitors are fine. I
have read about the capacitor plague but I think
that's been more recent and has mostly effected PC
hardware. The power supply circuit boards looke clean
too. And even if I could just replace the caps, I
have zero skill with a soldering iron.

There are about four of these caps that are
 important to the power-on
circuitry. If those caps stop working, then the
 machine won't stay
on. However, this problem more commonly has the

I'm kind of looking for a no cost/super low cost
solution as I'm a college student. Much of the Mac
stuff I have is from Goodwill or sometimes people just
giving their old stuff away. If I ever pick up a
compatible power supply or motherboard I could plop
those in. But I wouldn't want to gut a working Quadra
just to revive a Centris.

Alternatively, your power supply may be history.
 Again, the
electrolytic capacitors in the supply are the most
 likely culprit,
but this time you'd be dealing with through-hole
 caps rather than
tiny surface mount caps. Replacing the caps in the
 power supply
 might fix it.

Do you know anything about the fuse?

You can use the power supply from the following Macs
 in the Centris
 650: Mac IICX, IICI, IIvi, IIvx, Q700, C650, Q650,
 PM7100.

Motherboards for the Centris 650 are not uncommon on
 Ebay and
generally under $15. You can also use the
 motherboard from a Quadra
650 or a Q800. Your CPU chip is almost certainly
 still fine, so you
could even get a MB with no CPU and just move it
 over, which might
save you a bit. I like the seller, Olde Mac Milt
 (olde-mac-milt),
so you might contact him and see if he has a C or
 Q650 motherboard
 available.

Thanks very much for your help.

Oops, just checked and it looks like he's in the
 process of moving.

[q] REDUCED after intervention: Centris 650

2005-12-07 Thread Mark

Other than the externals, you have a $10 computer. The
externals themselves are not likely to fetch more than
$25, as a scsi cd burner is going to be slow and
archaic.

So where are you getting this $200 figure and why are
you posting ads on quadlist?

[q] Centris 650 Problems

2005-12-06 Thread Nick
Greetings,

I was hoping someone could give me some suggestions
for a sick Centris 650. I had it in storage for a
while and before I put it in, it worked great. Once I
took it out, however, I couldn't get it to turn on at
all. It appears to be dead. I can't get the fan to
come on or get a chime or anything. As far as I can
tell, everything is fine. I even pulled the SIMMs to
see if that would help. I also replaced the PRAM
battery and nothing worked. At this point, I am at a
loss. The only thing I can think of trying is to
replace the fuse in the power supply. I have no idea
if the fuse is blown or not (it's opaque so I can't
see the filament) but I figure it's worth a try.
Unfortunately, I can't find a replacement fuse around
here.

At any rate, I would appreciate any suggestions or
tips anyone can offer me on getting this Centris 650
back from the grave. I'd hate to scrap it as it's a
fine machine.

Thank you.

-Nick

Well, I suppose you could always crack it open and find out... If I
remember correctly, all you have to do is pop open the cover over the
ports on the back, and the motherboard slips right out.

Yeah. I was able to make an ordinary 16MB SIMM-- an EDO one at that (I
guess EDO is backwards-compatible with non-EDO?)-- work fine with it. Now
to find me a 32MB or 64MB SIMM

My sources are contradictory as to whether or not the system supports a
64MB SIMM...

[q] flashing X at startup screen

2005-12-03 Thread Mauricio Santana

Hello list,

I just got my hands on a Quadra 950 without a hard drive, just a floppy,
which was bad (it wouldn't take floppies in).

The mac has the following problem:

The mac displays a floppy with a flashing X.

After replacing the floppy drive with an auto - inject one, the mac
displays the same flashing diskette with an X, and a startup floppy
*known*¨to work gets ejected.

I tried another floppy drive *known* to work and same thing (also
auto-inject).

If I disconnect the floppy I get the familiar flashing question mark.

Any ideas as to what may be happenning?

Thanks for the help,

Mauricio

Re: [q] flashing X at startup screen

The floppy is designed for a Quadra 950 (it is the install me first of
A/UX 3.0 actually) I double checked this by inserting it in a mac
classic (the mac did start up and bombed after asking for an FPU).

Now, what I don't understand is that there is no question mark in all of
this, the X is displayed as soon as the machine is turned on, even if
there is no floppy in the drive... :-(

The flashing X generally means that the disk was seen but
that there was no system on the disk useable on the computer
you are using.

Is the disk known to work on a Q950 or some other machine?

Ken

1 Replace disk with known-good system disk.
2 Clear parameter RAM. Hold down Command Option P

[q] Desperately need a bootable hard drive for a Quadra

2005-12-01 Thread j
I'm working on a vintage Quadra belonging to a client, and while taking
the hard drive home, it FELL out of my backpack.

I desperately need a SCSI hard drive of at least 250MB, suitable for a
Quadra and preferably Apple branded, which:

* Works
* Is in decent cosmetic condition
* Contains an installation of Mac OS 8.0 or 8.1 BOOTABLE ON A QUADRA (do a
'Universal' install, I guess?)

* Is at least 250MB in size.

I will pay for such an item. Please help, help, help... :( I'm having an
awful day due to this.

Many thanks.

Actually, the hard drive is SCSI, though you may be
able to insert the drive into another SCSI based Mac
or an external SCSI case and be thus retrieve the data.

like to get it up and running so I can get file off the HD.

Any Ideas to try?

[q] Quadra 610/ DOS problem

2005-11-22 Thread Jeff Walther

Date: Tue, 22 Nov 2005 11:57:22 -0800 (PST)
Subject: [q] Quadra 610/ DOS problem
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,
Just wondering if anyone might be able to assist with a dead
Q610/DOS. Problem is that I get the 'Chimes of Death' on Boot and no
Picture on the monitor. It has 16mb of RAM and is maxed on Vram. I'd

As Ken wrote, the RAM is the first place to look. If that doesn't
work, I'd pull the RAM (there's 4 MB on the MB, yes?) disconnect all
SCSI cables (internal and external) and remove anything (DOS card)
from the expansion slot.

Then test to see if you get a proper chime. If you do get a proper
chime, then add things back a few at a time until the problem returns
or until you're back in business. This is a standard kitchen-sink
diagnosis method.

If the stripped down machine still doesn't chime properly, then
you've got a power supply or a motherboard problem and probably
motherboard (power supply problems tend to manifest as dead sets).
In that case, I'd examine the motherboard carefully for
darkened/discolored areas. Old Macs bite the dust as the
electrolytic caps start to leak. The stuff they leak is apparently
conductive and corrosive. If it hasn't corroded anything, then you
cna probably get operational again by thoroughly cleaning the board.
Some folks swear by running it through the dishwasher, but I prefer a
thorough scrubbing with alcohol or spray and scrub with Flux Remover
(available at Frys). To be really thorough, replace all the surface
mount electrolytic caps with SM tantalum caps.

If there are no discolored areas, I'd guess that the on-board RAM has
developed a fault. It's probably not too hard to scavenge some chips
from old 4 MB SIMMs and replace it if you're reasonably skilled at
soldering. I could do it but the shipping both ways is probably more
than a replacement Q610 board.

Re: [q] Quadra 610/ DOS problem

2005-11-22 Thread Matthew Lawrence
If reseating the RAM don't do the trick, try replacing the clock
battery, especially if the Quadra's been sitting around unused for any
amount of time. Something's happening when you try to boot it, which
means the clock battery is not completely gone, but there are quite a
bit of problems traceable back to a dying clock battery. Your problem
does sound like the RAM needs reseated, hence the breaking glass sound.

[q] Web browsing on vintage macs

2005-11-19 Thread Robert Patterson

I thought I'd pass on a useful link to those of you browsing the web
on 68K Macs...

If you use iCab 2.9, you probably encounter a lot of errors or lock-ups
resulting from most modern web-pages which use resource-hogging technology
or plug-ins. So, it's refreshing to find sites which are still quite
useful on older Macs.

The regular Yahoo! sites don't take well to older browsers, but they also
have Pocket PC-friendly addresses that we can use successfully. Try:

http://wap.oa.yahoo.com

You can get the latest news, sports and information even if you don't have a
Yahoo! log-in, but if you do, you can even use Yahoo! web-mail!

Give it a try!

[q] Fraudulent request from List Mom

2005-11-07 Thread Dan Knight
Friends,

The message posted to these lists late last Friday did not come from
me. Good portions of it were quoted from things I had written in the
past, but I would never use these lists to look for a partner. I'm
doing quite nicely with Yahoo Personals, Match.com, and eHarmony, thank
you.

I appreciate the notes of encouragement, but the posting was
fraudulent. Someone spoofed my return address, and we are investigating.

Why do you want the pin-out? Wouldn't it be easier to just
get an adapter and plug it in? Most have the settings printed

What are you using, open transport or mactcp?
 what are you connecting to?
You may be better setting a static address, gateway and dns by
 hand, depending.

I think OS 7.5.5 supports OpenTransport, if so you should use that and I
would use a router to connect to the cable modem or DSL.

I have my Quadra 610 connected this way and it works with no problems, and my
PowerBook 3400c had problems when connected directly, but it works just fine
through the router.

I think you could share the USB printer with your Performa 637CD, if you have
it networked to a Mac that has the USB printer, or you could get another

The quad doublers are for quadra's and centris systems. They run at double
the speed of the original cpu, up to 50mhz, so they can't be used on
quadra's with a 33mhz cpu originally. They are only for 20mhz and 25mhz 040
systems, upgrading them to 40mhz or 50mhz.

I'm not sure about the turbo 040, but I'm sure somebody else here can chime
in about them.

The Turbo 040 is for 68030 based Macs. It works without an adapter
in the IIci, and (IIRC) the IIvi and IIvx. With various adapters it
can be installed in the Mac II, IIX, IICX, IISI and SE/30. Oh, I
believe there's also an adapter for the LC, LCII and Color Classic,
because I have a couple of those laying around here--okay, I checked.

This adapter puts the PowerCache in the Color Classic, LCII and the
LC. However, the PowerCache (68030 based accelerator, up to 50 MHz)
generally used the same adapters as the Turbo040, so it may be
possible to put the Turbo040 in the LC, LCII and Color Classic as
well.

In general, the 68040 chip is very over-clockable, so I'm not sure
that there is much point to the Quad upgrade from Daystar. With a
bit of soldering, the Centris 650, Q650 and Q800 can often be bumped
up to 40 MHz. See:http://homepage.mac.com/schrier/mhz.html

Re: [q] USB port in a 637CD Performa?

2005-10-11 Thread Matthew Lawrence
Unfortuanately, Jim, USB is not an option for a Performa 637CD, unlike
with the PPC-powered 62xx/63xx series after. Even IF somebody got
ambitious enough to develop a USB upgrade for 68K Macs, it'd be
painfully slow, being limited to either PDS slot or COMM slot for where
to stick the card. One of these days (i.e. when I've got the time), I'm
going to resurrect my late mom's Performa 637CD for the sole purpose of
playing my original version of SimCity...and some SimTower as well.

Re: [q] USB port in a 637CD Performa?

2005-10-11 Thread David Bell

Hi

I've never had a Performa 637CD to play with, but I have messed about
with a few 630s,
replacing the slide out logic boards with those from 5500/6500 Power
PCs. If I remember
correctly, this'll give you access to a PCI slot but you'd also need
a one slot riser to rotate

the card through ninety degrees.

The downside is that your 72 pin ram won't work - you need 5v 168 pin
sticks. To speed

things up more, you could also fit in a level 2 cache card.

I only ever fitted ethernet cards, so can't say for a fact if a USB
card would work properly.

This must have been two or three years ago and might be a cheaper
proposition today.

Using OS9 Helper, it was possible to get 9.2.2 running quite happily
on the upgraded 630s.

The experts on the list may be aware of restrictions due to power
supplies and so on with

your particular machine.

Hope this helps.

Hi Bill,

On my Quadra, I use Kensington MouseWorks v5.02 (dated 1997). The
software supports all the Kensington ADB pointing devices + some
third-party ones and, among other things, allow to re-assign the
buttons. I use it in conjunction with ordinary mouse, so I haven't
tested reassignment, though. As graphical Control Panel shows, it can
handle up to four buttons, and in addition, simultaneously pressed two
buttons are treated as separate event. It works on 68k machines running
system 7.x or higher.

Distribution SIT file is about 800k; let me know if you're interested.

Went to visit some old friends tonight have a small haul of old Mac
software. Office 4, FoxPro 2.5, Borland C++, SoftQuad HotMetal 3.0,
Apple Internet Connection Kit and some others. I've also got some old
Norton Utilities, about v6. Coming soon should be some MacOS CDs, too
- OS 8 / 8.5 / 8.6.

Anyway, I don't really want or need most of this, so I'm happy to give
it away to anyone that wants it. I've also got some LocalTalk cables
and things spare, too.

The S/W is almost all boxed with manuals so will be expensive to post.
I'm in London, England, so Brits only need apply for most of this, I
fear. Happy enough to post to Europe or wherever if you're paying PP,
though!

[q] Kensington Turbo Mouse ADB driver or settings

2005-09-11 Thread William Ove
I picked up a few of these. They are model #62360. They appear to be
working fine, but I have been unable to either find a driver for them
or any information about the dip switch settings for them. I am left
handed and having a two button input device that is configured for
right handers is difficult to use.

If anyone has any information about there track balls, I can most
likely put it to good use. I assume these would work well with the
Quadras. I have never been able to locate 68k drivers for their V5 4
button trackballs.

thanks
bill

2005-09-11 Thread Lynn Lasswell
I am using a Model 64210 Vers. 5 on a G4 with an iMate adaptor for
the ADB to USB conversion. Would any of that software help? I used
to use it with my Quadra 700.

Re: [q] Kensington Turbo Mouse ADB driver or settings

2005-09-11 Thread William Ove
Thanks for the response. I have a 64210 as well. I use it with OS X
on a G4 as well, but I have never found any software to fully utilize
it on my Quadra 840, all the Kensington drivers I have for it are PPC
only.

The 62360 is much older. It is a two button trackball. There are six
dip switches on the back that are probably used in configuring it,
but I have found neither directions nor drivers for it.

If you do have 68k drivers for the model 64210 I would be very
interested in obtaining a copy.

Once again thanks for your response
