Re: [RBW] my sort of new to me Hunqapillar
Nice bike, Christian! I think my Hunqa would do a brevet, in its current config, as well. When I have it outfitted with similar wheels/tires and bars as my Hilsen, it's a bit stiffer, but a superbly comfortable ride. Nice to know that it is a proven alternate if the Hilsen has an issue pre-ride... Brian Seattle, WA On Sun, Apr 7, 2013 at 3:49 PM, Christian christian.w.mcmil...@gmail.comwrote: So back in the fall I bought a Hunqapillar from someone on the list. I rode it around here and there but nothing more than a few miles at a time. For 99% of my riding I used my 650B Terraferma. The Hunqapillar was great, but I bought it to ride around town, eventually to tour again, it was a good deal, etc. But then the drive side chainstay on my beloved Terraferma broke! The Hunqapillar needed to snap to attention. I swapped over my decaleur and Berthoud bag, head light (it came with a SON hub), converted to drivetrain from 1 X 8 to 3 X 8 (I'd prefer my compact Herse, but did not want to fiddle with it and knew I'd get the Sugino up and running quickly). I then headed out for a ride. I needed to get the bike in shape for this weekend's fleche. So on Monday I did a mixed terrain century using Marathon Duremes (talk about a workout!), ordered some Paselas, and headed out Saturday morning for the fleche. I developed some hip pain--something that's crept up before and had been solved, I think, by my low q Herse crank--and had to abandon. But not before getting in a 200k. The Hunqapillar was to be my Hunqafleche but since I did not finish I cannot christen it a full rando bike yet. It performed well, however. The Paselas make it look like a skinny tire bike! [RBW] The Rivendell Blues..
No, not the Glen Frye song... RBW has certainly had some really nice blues over the years. The Ram blue mentioned in a previous thread is French Blue, as close as I can see. Since there is a forest in France named Rambouillet as well as a sheep breed, makes sense. The Road and Romulus had a similar wonderful minty blue color, and Bleriot and Hilsen also were/are blue beauties. I don't know the names, if any, that RBW has for them. When my Road needed a repaint I looked long and hard at all the pretty bikes in the cyclofiend gallery, almost going with the Branywine red, but finally re doing it in the original blue. [RBW] Re: OT: your opinion of the Bridgestone RB-T?
No comment particular to the RB-T, but of old, used bikes in general. IME, you can spend a load of $$$ on a used bike chasing an unattainable dream. At a minimum: unless the bike is a garage-queen formerly owned by an OCD type, or you happen to be a decent wrench yourself and have a garage full of good parts, you're probably going to have to spend a small fortune at the LBS replacing things that are worn out. Chain, cassette, crank/chainring(s), brake pads, bar-tape, cables, tires, and who knows what else, along with a tune-up/overhaul...could easily run to $300 or even $500 (even with mediocre replacement parts) at a LBS. As a best-case scenario, I'm not including stuff like cracked/bent rims or screwed up hubs or a stuck seatpost or a handlebar/stem that Nitto says you should replace every 5 years (or when your GF needs a different bar/stem for comfort)...things that can run into big money. So, let's say that, with this basic maintenance, the bike actually costs you $800 total. Even for that $800, most of the good parts that were not replaced (including the frame) are still 20 years old, and have an unknown history. And besides that, unless your GF really has her heart set on a RB-T, you've just spent $800 on a bike that you settled for because it was one of very few suitable options available on the local used market. If she doesn't like it after going through all that trouble, you'll be lucky to recoup even a fraction of the extra $$$ you put into fixing it up. For that $800 or a bit more, you could buy a NEW bike with all new parts and a warranty and a LBS that wants you and your GF to be happy customers. Most importantly, the new bike world allows a person to shop around a bit to find a bike he/she really likes, rather than settling for whatever happens to make it to Craigslist. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. As a owner of many a vintage bike I have to agree with Jim. I wouldn't buy one not expecting to spend extra on a host of things. Re: [RBW] Re: OT: your opinion of the Bridgestone RB-T?
Same holds true for old cars or boats. If you know what you are doing and want to do the project, great. If you have no clue but see a low price on ebay or CL, you are just rolling dice. I bought a used frame set (RBW Road) here (or maybe it was on the 650B list?) from a reputable seller and knew what my budget would be. I also could (and did) build it up from scratch myself. It worked out satisfactorily, but for the same money I could also have purchased new, decent quality mass production bike. The bike I built up is way more bike for the same money, imo. Re: [RBW] Re: Rambouillet, finally built!
Ryan -- I know it's an odd fixation, but my goal is to have a bike that rides very nicely unladen, as the Ram has proved to do, and that can also carry groceries -- up to 40 lb, usually 25 to 30 lb -- nicely. The '73 Motobecane did so, as did my first -- early 1995 -- Waterford custom; which is odd because neither of these bikes was at all designed for loading. I don't want a bike designed for heavy loads as these, probably, won't ride as nicely unladen. As for theft, I use my '03 custom for errands but I am fortunate that it rarely needs to be locked outside, and that only in better, and well trafficked, places. Frankly, I see the Ram as a kind of high end -- well, beater is too strong a word, but one that spares my customs, should they need it. [RBW] Re: Dynamo Lights and Theft
A similar thing happened to me during a trip to the grocery store, also on a busy street, in front of a busy bus stop, and in broad daylight, except the thief tried to get my basket! I came out of the grocery store to find that someone had cut 5 of the 8 zip ties that held the basket to my front rack. I promptly got some metal plates and screwed my basket to the rack, and also now keep both my basket and the rack locked to my frame with a cable, as a deterrent. My seat post and saddle are locked to my frame too, with a U-lock. I'm a fan of pitlock skewers and, as soon as I can afford them, I'm also getting some of those to secure my wheels to the frame (for now I just TiGr lock both wheels to the frame and a bike rack (30 TiGr lock), and back that up with a U-lock). Lights are way more valuable than a basket, so I would consider a good pitlock skewer set lock yours onto your bike. Good luck, and don't let this stop you from the practical use of your bike! [RBW] Re: OT: your opinion of the Bridgestone RB-T?
What Jim says is well worth considering. I don't know how much I have in mine but I know it would be way north of $800 if I would have bought everything new (might be anyhow). I had it repainted and had used parts I on hand that I used and it still cost me a fair amount of money . The used parts cost me something at some point in time and new cables, chain, tire, tubes, ect. all add up. I also have enough parts that I knew if I didn't like the setup I could always change it's hairdo That being said it's still one of my favorite bikes but then again it fits me and I like the ride. If I were fiscally responsible when it comes to bicycles. I probably would have never pursued it. But I'm not. Yes to all of the above. As a bit of a Bridgestone collector, I can say with some authority there are two ways to buy an expensive one: Buy and expensive one, or buy a cheap one... [RBW] Re: Dynamo Lights and Theft
These would probably do the trick... http://www.bicyclebolts.com/collections/security-allen-bolts I know this notion offends some bob-types, but a bit of duct tape strategically placed on the lights seems to help. I see a lot of pretty bikes here. Shiny, expensive bits. Spotlessly clean. They are nice. I appreciate them. But I wouldn't park a show-bike at our local Trader Joe. Re: [RBW] my sort of new to me Hunqapillar
The Paselas completely transformed the bike. GB Cypres might be next. I am imagining having a set of Cypres and maybe BG Rock n Roads to swap back and forth. The wheels are Velocity Dyad 36 hole with a Phil Wood in the rear and a SON 28 up front. What's your Hilsen wheel set up? I'm not gonna do much more to optimize the Hunq for brevets; my Terraferma will be back in service before too long. Best wishes, Christian Charlottesville, VA. Re: [RBW] Re: OT: your opinion of the Bridgestone RB-T?
Agreeing with the other folks here. I've come close a few times over the past few years to buying an older bike. Once I've sat down and figured out how much would be spent, have decided it wasn't worth the effort. The other thing (and this is not a rub on the RB-T) but a lot of the older bikes don't take the tire widths I need. As Jim Thill is well aware, came close to buying an older Miyata touring bike. Once I looked and figured out the bike might be able to fit 28s with fenders that idea went out the window. [RBW] Re: Dynamo Lights and Theft
On my Indy Fab touring bike that I had set up with a dynamo front wheel I used a SuperNova light mount for my Edelux. I swapped out the standand bolt on the front (that threaded through the Edelux bracket) and put my Pitlock on there. I used the Pitlock for the seat collar. It worked pretty well but was difficult to get enough torque to secure it. It was somewhat of a hassle but it gave me piece of mind. Now my piece of mind is never locking my bikes up outside unless I have to. I live in Chicago so that might add to that mindset. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: OT: your opinion of the Bridgestone RB-T?
Interesting discussion. I've had great fun, great chagrin, and great expense trying to achieve silk purse perfection out of sows' ear beaters. OTOH, I've sold some such beaters and, afterward, regretted doing so. But on the whole, I've learned that, unless the cheap find is exceptional -- either exceptionally good or exceptionally cheap, it's not a good way to spend your money. But this sort of buy/rehab/try/sell-at-loss has at least given me experience with many bikes. Now my brother, OTOH, goes through at least a dozen bikes a year -- at one point he had so many that he would lose bikes, frames groups, inside his very large garage that was packed floor to rafters, front to back, and side to side, leaving only a little gap near the door for his workspace. And this number includes only those he buys for his own interest, not those other dozens he buys merely to flip (tho' he ends up flipping many of the former category, too). Since he's much less picky about what he likes, and knows his stuff, he does manage to find excellent bikes and still come out way ahead financially - a sort of self-supporting acquisition addiction. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Dynamo Lights and Theft
Sorry about your light getting stolen, anything stolen off of your bike feels personal. My antitheft device is a ball bearing and some Gorilla Glue in the hex head. The glue sets pretty hard, and Ive tried getting it out myself as if I were a thief. To actually get it out, I have to heat it up a bit with a lighter or any heat source I would imagine. If i were out riding and I needed to adjust my saddle or something on my light, Id be a bit out of luck. My thing is to just deter someone from stealing things off your bike because it might take too long.Maybe its stopped someone before, or maybe Ive just been really luck. [RBW] Saluki stuff
The question earlier about Pea Sage Green got me hunting down the actual color name for the early Saluki (Yellow Olive) but a crawl through old pages showed up something I missed until now. This little tidbit: Yes, you can use 700c or (on the centerpull version) mountain bike 26-inch wheels, but the frame is designed for 650Bs, and the others should be regarded as life-or-death options for escaping mean cowboys in middle-of-the-desert saloons, after you flatten their tires and scatter their horses. If mine were a center pull model, you can be sure I'd beat a path to the garage to play musical wheel sets and see how the rides compare. I've always liked it as a 650B though. Loved it as I toodled on down to City Hall yesterday to meet the mayor (and talk bike stuff for our little town) and chained it up to the fence there. In fact, I don't have a 700 wheel bike at all anymore. Tailwinds -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Interesting take on the Kojaks. They felt fast on the Fargo, but now, on the Ram, which feels and fits more like the customs, the Kojaks feel a bit sluggish: odd because the 559 ones on the '03 don't give me that impression. Too many variables to count, I suppose, but once money is available, I will give the K's back to the Fargo and buy some nice Compass tires, God willing. Just 11 miles today on the Ram, on a detour'd PO run -- windy, cold, and wettish -- even a bit of sleet! Raised the saddle a wee bit; may drop the bar a wee bit, too. (Must play racer. One way I hope to avoid this is...I have a SuperNova E3 and I set it up on my bars with their handlebar mount. http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/supernova.asp (scroll down for the mount) I used a set of gold connectors from P White near the light. with this set-up, I can disconnect the light, remove it from the bars, and put it in my pocket in less time then it takes to write this sentence. works well. -liesl -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I have patched similar cuts in tires and ridden many many more miles on them (100's at least if not thousands). If you're really concerned, take an old tire and cut out a small section to use as a patch. [RBW] Re: Hetre gash: to replace or not replace?
In the two years I've been riding Hetres I've had several similar gashes with no ill effects. Generally, they've been caused by very small pieces of glass--or the gash somehow came first and the glass got in--and so I've had to get tweezers and pull the glass out. But the gash itself has never caused a problem or grown bigger. I say: ride on. Christian -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. What Joe said. Much better off getting a MB-5 which is already built up pretty close to that one. Wouldn't pay more than $150. Good idea to patch the tire. Even if it's a little square of duck tape. You couldn't run that cut with a latex tube - it would blow right through. On Tuesday, April 9, 2013 5:56:33 PM UTC-5, C.J. [RBW] WTT: My B17 for your Flyer
Hi everybody, I have a black B17 Standard for trade: Black, silver rivets, black rails. Bought new last fall, if I remember correctly. A few minor cosmetic marks from use. Nothing that's a big deal. I will send as many detailed pics as you like. Carefully proofhided upper and lower. Garage kept on the bike. Pretty much a saddle in its infancy. I like to ride with the handlebars high and think a sprung saddle will take the edge off the road bumps. I like the B17 shape, so I figure the Flyer will work out nicely. Not sure how this messaging from the group works so I will ask you to email me at : john11.2...@gmail.com Thanks -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
