[RBW] WTT: Camper LF and Bagman for Lowsaddle or Saddlesack Small
I'd like to see if I can eliminate the need for a rack on my Sam. I've only got 9 of clearance between the tire and the saddle loops. Is anyone interested in trading? The Camper will be two this Christmas, and is in good shape. The Bagman is the same age and in good shape as well. I'd also be willing to include a Bontrager Backrack if someone wanted that instead of the Bagman. [RBW] Re: Grips for Albatross Bars
Something about silicon reminds me of grabbing hold a squid in rigger. I just don't find it a pleasant experience. It's too squishy (not enough feedback from the bars) and unbreathable. What's the attraction? Now cork, cotton tape, and some shellac, I'm a happy lad. ESI grips are rather firm, not at all like silicone padded saddles for instance. I use silver ESIs on my not painted and not polished stainless steel bike, as the color is close to the stainless steel. When I last had my Albatross bars, I used fiber infused track bar grips. Plenty of bar feel there. On Saturday, August 24, 2013 10:45:26 AM UTC-5, Deacon Patrick wrote: Something about silicon reminds me of grabbing hold a squid in rigger. I thought the same thing when this popped up over a month ago. You can still see the original colour in the seat post binder lug and cable slots. Who would paint that bike yellow without removing the original paint first and then use a magic marker to highlight the lugs? Even if that frame was legit the price is too high.1250 for the bike 500 for a back to original paint job on a bike with unknown providence. You might as well buy a new one. Also not in the nicest area of the city which is a red flag. If someone on the list thinks it is theirs and they want me to check it out, just let me know. [RBW] Bleriot Birthday Ride Report
Greetings, Some people want gifts and parties for their birthday. I just want to be alone on my bike! Got my wish yesterday as the family dropped my off at Snoqualmie summit outside of Seattle. With the Shimano brake levers that came with my Sam you can mount it just behind the cable adjuster lock nut. That puts it in a very nice position. Re: [RBW] Re: Jamboree, China Camp
Since it is the 20th Anniversary of Rivendell why not celebrate with both locations since separate dates are already being proposed. Although the SF location has a growing lead very few pollsters (only 3 of 60) currently listed a willingness to attend either great state. Conflicts due to proximity or the dates tentatively selected could axe(no pun intended) 20 or more dedicated Rivendell riders and lovers of camping if this is whittled down to a single local. Therefore, I propose both get a nod to proceed, since the poll shows each with a minimum of 20 committed attenders and counting. Let the hosts or their designated poster start a new post or poll to select a date if those are not eched in stone yet. Then over the winter plans and updates can come together as fast or slow as each respective subgroup wants to put things out in hopes of increasing the number each Jamboree. If we want to have a National Jamboree, we should have a National Jamboree. It'll require some work and planning. If we instead want to have a get-together at China Camp and another get-together in Minneapolis, like the get-togethers we've been having all along, that's fine, but that's a different thing, a lesser thing. If it's just a matter of oh, there's an event in China Camp in July, and an event in Minneapolis in September, fine, but what makes them different than the get-together that just happened in Southern California, or the get-together in New Jersey earlier this year, or the get-togethers in the Pacific Northwest, or all the other get-togethers we all arrange and post about? [RBW] Re: SoCal Rivsters San Clemente S24O
Keeping up the momentum after the successful San Luis Obispo NorCal VS SoCal rumble we SoCaler’s decided an S240 was necessary, so the plan was hatched to ride from the Irvine Amtrak station the thirty odd miles south to San Onofre via the coastal communities of Laguna Nigel, San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente. Curtis from San Diego met up with Evan and me at the station; it was fun to gawk at the two Hilsen’s Curtis’s 67 cm and Evan’s 47 cm, great contrast. David and Doug rode down from Doug’s home to meet us. Doug being the local denizen led us through a scenic urban landscape the temperature was typical August weather for the South land and we only felt some respite from the heat once on the coast where there was a slight breeze. We were asked a number of times by combustion drivers where we were travelling from? Folks were so disappointed we were locals (as if being SoCaler’ on bikes with racks and bags isn’t something to behold) I mean they always think were from Oregon gasp! We decided to say we were travelling from Vancouver to Mexico just to keep the car deizen’s happy. What’s a little white lie for sanity. What kind of ride would this be without some libations there was a lot of arm twisting and we found ourselves at the Pizza Port, so we hoisted some liquid amber made a hearty toast to all things Riv, bikes, and compadres of course playing hooky from all of our responsibilities remember this was early Friday that’s how we roll down yonder. The conversation was good and of course there was talk of the National Riv Jamboree and other topics on the list of interest, but the best discussion was the curious case of the nebulous Mike Schiller there was conjecture that he was merely a collection of electrons which formed only long enough to make posts and commentary on the list-serve a ghost in the machine if you will. We’ve planned a number of Riv outings and Mike was digitally involved but at the last moment something would undoubtedly pop up? The night before our S240 we received a post “I'm up in Sylmar tonight at a last minute family gathering. I may not be back in time. I may ride up later if I'm home in time” We were laying down the odds of Mike making a showing I think we concluded there being a 1% chance he’d make it and just then the electron ‘field that is Mike materialized he was standing behind us albeit a bit sweaty but ready to have a beer pizza. This is why I don’t bet. At camp we noticed a tent set up and concluded this must be Tom Virgil as it was! With yet another surprise Esteban showed up on his sleek Matthews. Always great to meet more Rivsters. As usual we didn’t get enough saddle time so we rode our un-laden “rock fire” steeds with appropriate visibility back into San Clemente to a great taco shack and yet more great conversation. The next morning we awoke to another cyclist camped out David Greenblatt newly relocated from San Francisco to San Diego who rode in like a true randonneur arriving while we were sleeping around midnight. Tom Esteban had to make their way back home and the rest of us took off on some single track that was epic! What a way to get the day going. Curtis, David G, headed back South through Camp Pendleton to San Diego and the rest of us rode north to Irvine. Sorry for the long ramble... Pictures prove it happened. http://www.flickr.com/photos/pedalpusher61/sets/72157635232197840/show/ You can’t ask for better people to spend time with. More flash SoCal S240’s to come. At least judging from the pictures on the cyclofiend collection there seem to have been a variety of Saluki colors over time, and brake styles too. [RBW] Re: front or rear rack?
Jack, I connect with this, as I go back and forth between using the Acorn Rondeneur and a Carradice Barley bag. I definitely prefer bags that are above the fenders over panniers whenever possible. My two favorite rear bags are the Barley Bag mounted on the SQR release and an old large, wedge shaped Rhode Gear bag.The SQR keeps the bag off the back of my hips, and is absolutely the quickest on off the bike. You could pick up a used Nelson LP for short camping trips and skip the whole rear rack all together. I suspect that one of Rivs large trunk bags would be the most aerodynamic option. [RBW] Re: front or rear rack?
My set-up is an Acorn Rando bag on the small Nitto front rack, leaving the handlebar free for other clutter. I always a rear rack, even though it's usually empty. I think of it as one would the trunk of a car. It's always available if needed I can easily toss on a pannier or 2 without planning. dougP On Sunday, August 25, 2013 1:47:18 PM UTC-7, Michael Hechmer wrote: Jack, I connect with this, as I go back and forth between using the Acorn Rondeneur and a Carradice Barley bag. Re: [RBW] Re: front or rear rack?
I've gone back and forth between saddlebags and panniers so often that I must have lost hundreds of $$ by buying each dear and selling off cheap. I've tried: Nelson Longflap (many) Nelson shortflap Nelson Lowsaddle (1) Camper Longflap (two) Juniors (4-5 -- have one now) Adam (1) Hoss (1) Sackville Medium (1) I love saddlebags when they require no rear rack; hell, I like them BECAUSE they require no rear rack (I used the Hoss on the Ken Rogers tricycle where it sat between the wheels and thus did not require support to keep it above a wheel). BUT!!! None of the above held as much in volume or weight as I can get into two good-sized panniers. I hear that the Sackville Large is huge-issimo, but it still is short of a pair of Packer Pluses at 2451 ci the pair, or a pair of Banjo Bros Market Panniers at 3K ci the pair -- stuffed the S L handles 1984 ci, which is close to the pair of Packer Pluses but not quite there. In the Banjos I've carried, at the same time, a medium watermelon, a 12 pak of diet Root Beer (not for me, man!), a coupla bottles of wine, and miscellaneous food items and mail -- hit 50 lb once. Now if I had a bike that I wanted to carry only moderate loads -- say commuting, and never groceries -- I'd have stuck with the S-Med which, to my mind is the Ne Plus Ultra and Per Magnitudinem Rationabilem Ad Astra Et Beatitudinem of all saddlebag-kind, but it just won't handle my grocery loads. And if I have a rack, then I figger i'll use panniers that I can switch between one, small, say the Ortlieb Packer Sport at 900 ci, to the mega-sized pair of Market Panniers at 3K ci. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Saddles - A Weighty Question

The rails are the same I believe. But before you switch saddles, you may want to play with (one at a time to not confuse the issue) tilt of the nose up/down, sliding the saddle forward or back (try this first, moving it forward first based on what you wrote), and height. What you describe may well be resolved with those adjustments and have little to nothing to do with saddle width. [RBW] Mini Riv Ramble.
Got out for a few hours riding with Andy and Tommy. We rode through Forest Park on dirt roads up to Skyline Blvd. It was nice to catch up as we rode as I hadn't ridden with either of these guys since the Wasco County Ramble in April. After we got to Skyline we dropped down into Washington County. The descent down Springville Rd was great. From there we rode over to and up Old Germantown Road which climbs back up to Skyline and feels more like a bike path than a road. As we climbed it began to rain. Fortunately it wasn't too cold and the rain actually felt good. Once back up to Skyline Blvd we dropped down Germantown Rd. This is a bomber descent with the rain making it all the more treacherous. After riding across the St Johns Bridge we stopped by Rivendell Ridge to take pictures of the bikes. It felt great to get out with these guys and we talked about future rides. Oh, and it was Tommy's birthday! Pictures proved that it rained in Portland in Aug (probably because Andy's bike doesn't have fenders). http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/sets/72157635236299766/with/959345/ --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Tom, Thank you for the kind words. It was a pleasure to meet with you and I appreciate the grocery run you made a very communal spirit ,everyone brought something to the table to make this an epic get together. David, all the bikes were eye candy makes me feel a bit ADDS. ~Hugh On Saturday, August 24, 2013 10:10:17 PM UTC-7, Tom Virgil wrote: Now this was a good time. I hope that the SoCal Rivsters are safely arrived home or will soon be. Much appreciation to Hugh for setting this up, choosing San Mateo, selecting this campsite, and reserving it for us. Hugh made it happen. And hosted it. He helped folks set up tents, fix tires, heat water and spent some time with each person expressing friendship, humor, or some connection about bikes. I met some very nice people. All of them. There was bike talk. All very cool bikes being ridden. Liquid refreshment in general, and remarkably high quality sipping whiskey to nip off of in flasks. David's stealth appearance after hours had major benefits. Somehow he managed to visit a grocery store and score some very nice things that he shared in the morning. I have no idea how he pulled that off at that hour of the night time. I didn't get to do every thing due to work commitments. But it was the perfect S24O. Things here are changing very quickly (I am sure you know if you still have family here). There seems to be more and more cyclists on the road here and I have seen TWO Rivendells- besides the three we have. There are a lot of bike lanes here and some good riding. As Diane says - don't give up. I have spent days getting my wife and daughters saddles adjusted - and they are all three adjusted differently. The nose tilt is critical and I adjust that in very small increments. Interesting to me, the saddle didn't seem to be as important as the adjustment. RE: [RBW] Re: front or rear rack?
The Sackville Saddlesack Large is huge - and the loading is very easy and practical. It's true it needs a rack, so that you COULD run panniers. But it's just SO easy to load, and it feels like it will handle anything... If you like the Medium, you'll LOVE the Large. If you have a front rack like a Nitto mini, I also encourage you to consider a Wald Medium basket and even better, a Wald medium with a medium Shopsack. This is a totally sweet combo. Removeable zip ties make it easy to take on an off. It's a really useful set-up and will hold more than your rando, but it isn't too big either. [RBW] Re: Saddles - A Weighty Question
With respect to adjusting the tilt of the saddle, I found that some seatposts are better than others at allowing one to make some pretty fine adjustments. If you are like me, my small female hands can't always tighten up a Nitto post with a good adjustment at the same time. I've found that I really prefer posts with two bolts fore and aft like the Paul Tall and Handsome or the Thompson Elite. Just something to think about. Good luck! Liesl (a.k.a. From there we rode over to and up Old Germantown Road which climbs back up to Skyline and feels more like a bike path than a road. As we climbed it began to rain. This is the reason I pretty much avoid single bolt seatposts like the plague. The nitto S83 is a nice two bolt post, and only $13 more (from RBW) than the crystal fellow. Re: [RBW] Saddles - A Weighty Question
I don't think there would be an issue with a B17 as far as weight. I do, however, think you may end up considering a saddle with a cutout. If a B17 or a B67 is causing pressure where you don't want any pressure, you'll try tilting the nose down, but tilting the nose down enough to get the front of the saddle out of the way makes you slide forward off the saddle. On Sun, Aug 25, 2013 at 5:42 PM, Cecily Walker cecily.wal...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all, I have a Brooks B67 S saddle on my Betty Foy, but I'm finding that the saddle isn't as comfortable as it used to be when I was riding completely upright on my Dutch bike. I'm leaning a bit more forward on the Betty Foy, and that's putting some uncomfortable pressure on sensitive parts. My concern is that because I'm a heavyweight rider, a saddle like the B17 won't stand up to my weight, and I'll damage the seat rails. Have any of you who are in excess of 220# had any issues with the B17 saddle? If you have other recommendations, I'm happy to entertain them. Thanks!
