[RBW] Re: Kickstarter Project - Ride Bike!

2023-09-15 Thread Jock Dewey
Sp well done and worthy companion to ROUGHSTUFF. And 'thank you' Isola
Press for job well-done and for what must surly be mostly a labor of love.

Hard to recall now, a time before Jobst and all of his cantankerous
Jobstisms. He got really worked up over the 'no grease' on spindle threads.
That's maybe my favorite. Seems we all needed a proper scolding now and
again.

Anyone remember good old Robin Hubert...years ago now I suppose? He'd
invoke Jobst in almost every discussion.

2023-03-05 Thread Jock Dewey
Michael, the tires on our Santana were 27" @ 28 mm wide mounted on 48 spoke
wheels front/rear. We punctured only once in just under 2,000
miles—Anacortes, WA to Thief River Falls, MN...on a gravel road into
Glacier NP. Quite a machine that was. We never touched our tool set.

Peter, that is a timelessly beautiful bicycle. Bravo for spending the $$
and taking the time to preserve it. IMHO, there is nothing so satisfying as
riding a bicycle you have owned and maintained for years and years. Richard

In case any of you are new to Kurcharik, if there are woolies your size
snatch 'em up.

I bought my first Kurcharik jersey in 2003 and twenty years later I'm still
wearing it in daily rotation. No visible wear save for some sunshine fading
on the backside. Otherwise looks brand new. Best deal ever!

[RBW] Re: Jobst Brandt thought experiment: What would he ride today?

2023-02-02 Thread Jock Dewey
RE: JB

Near as I can remember, I started lusting after bicycles at about age
four...that was a long time ago now. A Dutch track bike dangled from a
rafter in my Grandfather's garage. It was love at first sight. When I laid
eyes on my first 10-speed in 1958—a Raleigh Bluestreak—my head (and heart)
exploded. I've been chasing that one ever since.

My bikes are all steel, I built the oldest in 1998 and most recently one of
Hiroshi's EBISU, built precisely for my 130 lb. frame. It's an artful, no
nonsense rocketship. Fast as any carbon—but with its skinny tubes, lugs,
and curvy fork—looks like it, too, was built in 1958. I also was employed
by Richard Schwinn in Waterford, WI—therefore surrounded by the metal works
of many legends, including Richard himself. Those guys all know a thing or
two.

On our long rides together, my pals and I carried on endlessly about JB the
engineer or rather, his many opinions / obsessions / observations. We all
agreed with most every JB declaration. We whiled away the hours, mile after
mile, jabbering until our vocal chords gave out. I didn't have the math
skills to make it as an engineer, but I've got the heart for it. My
grandfather was a brilliant aircraft designer...I just wasn't there when
the math genes were passed out.

But I am handy, I love tools, and I've always maintained and built my own
bicycles (frames notwithstanding). In fact, the only mechanic I ever
trusted was Colin O'Brien, proprietor of Cronometro in Madison Wisconsin
and as I recall I may have let him work on one of my bikes one time long
ago.

Someone wondered how he'd fit in today, good question. I have a riding pal
in Athens, GA with a beautiful collection of steel bikes—including works by
Richard Sachs, Peter Weigle, Pegoretti, Masi, and others in that club. But
he also rides modern carbon bikes and will argue energetically with anyone
who looks down on today's machines. He loves his 'plastic' (as referenced
by Richard S.) 26-speed and the science behind it.

So back to JB. I'd be inclined to say that he'd look down upon carbon bikes
(with 8 oz. carbon wheels) and the way we ride them. Meaning lots of gears,
high cadence, wider tires, plastic seatposts 2 feet long, skinsuits, bike
positioning, white socks reaching up to the knees, and those damn white
shoes etc. etc.

But maybe, with his obvious intelligence and brilliant engineering chops,
he'd totally embrace the technology.

The more I think about it, I'm betting he would. Afterall, consider all the
carbon in a Porsche 963. Take away all that plastic, not much left but the
tires.

[RBW] Re: Grand Bois Cypres 700 x 30 substitutes?

2020-06-24 Thread Jock Dewey
Hey, Paul:

Your posts are always* the best*, enjoy reading every one of them...and
some of our conversations, too.

Especially your tire ovations.

I say this, because it is *important & necessary* that tires look good and
make proper sounds on good pavement. It's the only music I listen to out on
the road.

Re: [RBW] Sunglasses

2020-06-02 Thread Jock Dewey
Sorry, does 'diminish' the darkening over time.

That said, I still use and prefer photochromatic lenses because I just
don't like dark lenses on a cloudy day. Too gloomy for me, makes me want to
turn around and go home : )

Best cloudy day lens is yellow. Totally turn a gloomy cloudy day into a
bright sunny one. Extend your riding time for at least another 20 or 30
miles. But if sun does come out, you're screwed as the yellow lens
intensifies the light. Just can't win these days.

That is definitely true, Patrick. The constant cycling does dimishing the
darkening over time. Eventually, they don't darken much at all. Transitions
is a brand-name, and they will argue that they do not lose effectiveness,
but that is just not true.

Buyer beware.

[RBW] Re: Sunglasses

2020-06-01 Thread Jock Dewey
I'm biased, as longtime TIFOSI account manager...but the only way to find
glasses that fit properly is to try them on one-by-one. Without standing
before a display, actually fitting a frame before purchase is not the best
way to go.

All makers very likely have some frame that will fit your face and many
other styles that won't. To recommend one brand over another without
fitting is basically meaningless.

[RBW] FS: New Shimano BR-R650 47 / 57 Brakeset

2020-05-04 Thread Jock Dewey
All:

These have been mounted once, and then quickly taken off. They fit exactly
like the old ULTEGRA 47 / 57s and are beautifully finished, very nice
brakes. The frame they were destined for has a rear brake bridge that
fowled up my plans, doggone it.

BTW, they are much nicer than the TEKTRO Quartz calipers on the bike, much
stiffer and better looking IHMO.

I dropped $125 for the pair, shipped and taxed, will part with them for $90
shipped. Paypal F & F.

Please rsvp offline. Thanks for looking.

Y'all:

So here in Athens, GA we've got many ops for group riding. I ride with a
couple of different groups regularly, turns out to be 4 or 5 days a week
with other riders.

What do you all think about bicycle gatherings? We ride in pacelines, wheel
to wheel, maybe we shouldn't be. When we gather to start or stop, can
practice social distancing SD, but what about moving down the road. Any
brilliant ideas?

Shipbikes is a div of LICKTONS, one of the oldest and most reputable bike

industry his entire life and knows what he's doing.

A great character, emphasis on character!

These companies are just expeditors, so really the only two issues are 1 /
cost and 2 / who you'd rather have transport and deliver your goods.

[RBW] Re: Happy Retirement Bob!

2019-11-26 Thread Jock Dewey
George:

Lucky YOU, sir!

I loved 70s maybe best in many ways. Not least of those, the glory days of
Campagnolo RECORD. Oh, my. I have my very first Campy bit, year 73 stamped
on top, a beautiful Record rear derailer. It's always nearby, in the night
stand beside our bed (just kidding). The most elegant, ornate, functional
(tho some disagree), rebuild-able, artful chunk of ALU ever created! No
argument will convice me otherwise. And I damn near wore the thing out. Not
scratch on it, and if you've ever seen these for sale, they are almost
always really scuffed up as the result of careless 'tip overs'. I bought
the thing before I even had a frame suitable, its equal so to speak. When I
built my first really nice bike, an Eisentraut, that derailed was the first
thing I mounted.

What's yours? My guess is either Brit or French.

I love mystifying the carbons -- once I grab a wheel, I don't let go, haha!
I think it annoys them, an old guy on an old steel bicycle. An antique in
many ways. Most don't know really what it is, and they don't care.

I've been riding the Paramount quite a bit lately. Totally dialed, you
should ride yours more often!

We are a wonderful, different bunch to be sure. What fun.

Re: [RBW] Re: Happy Retirement Bob!

2019-11-26 Thread Jock Dewey
Hey, Patrick:

Thanks! I've been riding this bike, mostly as it is, for 34 years or so
now. And it brings me as much joy now, maybe more, than it ever has. That's
a great gift and I'm thankful for the gifts (of any kind actually).

The crank is what makes this thing possible just now. I built this frame up
with mostly Campy bits, save for some Suntour I thought worked better, like
Superbe Pro rear derailed, aero levers (even back that far) but the rest is
all Campy, brakes, seat post, C-Record hubs. Did have Cinelli stem and
bars, but alas, need a little higher now so beautiful Nitto fills the bill.
Actually, Nitto so much prettier than Cinelli anyway, haha!

Crank is IRD Campy copy, but 94 BCD which allows 30 inner and in the North
Georgia mountains, I need every gear-inch I can get!! BTW, the dearly
departed and sorely missed Jon Williams (RIP) MR. DRILLIUM REVIVAL, often
used these for his creations. It is beautifully finished out of the box, as
nice as any you've seen, and he then tuned them into exquisite rolling
works of metallic art. He's got plenty of FLIKR images, treat yourself
sometime when you're not too busy.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/54616231@N04/

And last but not least, I've been fussing over and cleaning bikes for a
long time. It's quite the habit, probably not one a normal person would
want to cultivate. I vividly recall polishing the chrome chainring on my
first bike, a second-hand 20"er, until I could see myself in it like a
mirror. I must have been about 5 years old. All these years later, I'm
still at it. BTW, I'm no longer embarrassed and certainly not apologetic as
I have been in the past. I am what I am.

A well-bred race bike, a stage race bike like one is, is a joy to ride. It
goes straight down the road and the harder you push and stomp on it, the
straighter it goes. (I've often thought I could easily ride this bike
no-handed with my eyes closed.) Of course, in its day, Paramount was as
fine a racing bicycle as any in the world. Probably at the very top of its
game, if you consider fit and finish, e.g. paint, chrome. Here it is 35
years later, and not a spot of decay or tarnish or blemish of any kind. And
it has been ridden, not a garage queen. That what my little obsessions get
me and for that I'm also grateful.

It is Thanksgiving time, right?

[RBW] Re: New-to-me: 59cm Roadeo

2019-06-04 Thread Jock Dewey
Beautiful machine, Bill! Nice work.

Grant's designs all ride so so well, and these two, RAM & ROADEO, just rise
like cream. Why, oh why, however, doesn't that true road bike, ROADEO, have
bosses for DT shifters. A quirky Grantism I guess, they* all *seem to have
one buried in there somewhere.

That's a beautiful bike & a brute of a ride, not for the faint of heart.

Hogpen Gap is genuine CAT 2 climb, steep and fearsome. Probably one of only

[RBW] Hats Off To...

2018-12-09 Thread Jock Dewey
...all you folks like Josh Imler...who respect the working bicycle and are
happy to spend the $$$ to make really artful yet useful machines and
support all the good guys out there who make them.

We live in a small town with great access, right out the front door, to
beautiful country backroads in all directions...but running errands and
such that makes proper use of 'working bikes' just isn't possible thanks to
no reasonably safe way to get to *those* kinds of places, i.e. the local
merchants. Weird, right? But true. Of course, as we know, life's all about
trade-offs. I'd love both but am plenty happy to settle for one.

Bravo for building a Grant Petersen 'special' and pulling your Christmas
tree home on that beautiful bicycle.

Happy Holidays / Jock Dewey / Athens, GA

[RBW] Re: handlebar/stem bags - what do people like?

And BTW, plenty of room in GB192 for SLR and lenses with foam insert. Not
too big, but plenty big enough...with some room to spare. Grab it right out
of bag with just a quick slip of elastic band.

We've owned lots of bags through the years, beginning with old TA circa
1970, but this surpasses all in function and style. In fancy NYC store
selling fine leather goods, this would be hundreds and hundreds of $$$.
Sometimes we get such a deal.

Re: [RBW] Recomendations For Cycling-Specific Vehicle

2018-09-26 Thread Jock Dewey
A resounding YES indeed.

This is the most utilitarian cycling accessory ever conceived. It has all
kinds of hooks and such inside to bungee bikes safely and securely. I've
taken the rear seats out of mine...it's an older one with the rubber-like
mats throughout. Just lift 'em up and wheel 'em right in. I bought it new
in 2004 and I am way too attached to this thing. Nevermind its good looks
and wonderful view of the road.

Like the previous poster proclaimed, I will do whatever it takes to keep it
on the road as long as I'm capable of swinging a leg over the TT.

[RBW] Re: Lights and Tariffs

2018-09-25 Thread Jock Dewey
Another casualty among so so many these past 18 months. I have good
industry pals who worked very hard to make that company what it is. Or
maybe now, was.

We are the walking / cycling wounded. A good long hard fast ride helps
control the angst, however.

So that is what we do.

Nice looking bike, Joe. Good job.

Question: why do you suppose the brake cable runs on top of the tube rather

[RBW] Re: How rusty does the inside of a frame get without rust proofing? This rusty.

Great discussion and plenty of good info.

I'll add this FWIW: I spent two delightful years working for Richard
Schwinn in Waterford, WI, early 2000s. As far as data points go, he's got
quite a few of 'em to be sure. When asked about rusty frames, he responds
that he has *never* seen a steel frame rust from the inside out. That's
plenty good for me...yet I continue to Boeshield mine. Go figure, ha!

2018-05-18 Thread Jock Dewey
Hey, Patrick:

I was playing around with my RAM the other day and discovered Compass 35s
easily fit just fine with SKS 45mm mudguards. This on Open Pro rims,
however.

Decided 35s just didn't work aesthetically for me, however. Fashion has
consequences, right? So went with 32s instead. Perfect ride now and was
really really good before.

[RBW] Re: Canti Sam Hillborne: No Cable Hangers

2018-05-14 Thread Jock Dewey
Hi, Y'all:

I have a slightly OT que regarding canti-SAM.

Instead of the brazed on DT cable stops, why not posts for either stops or
DT shifters? Using barend levers, but w/out the barrel adjusters no way to
pull up or release rear D cable slack w/out stopping and fiddling with
adjustment at the derailer.

Both require brazing so doesn't seem like $$ or time issue. It's so handy
being able to adjust on the fly. BTW using Shimano XT 760 low-normal,
really nice derailer.

Or is there a solution I'm missing?

[RBW] Re: wtb: Homer Hilsen - 59cm

2018-03-03 Thread Jock Dewey
Hey, SAMBobs:

Well, I'll weigh in here as a longtime RAMrider and now somewhat
experienced SAMrider. Also have other racy lightweight bicycles hanging
around for comparison.

My son and I just finished building his SAM with very nice wheels (White
Ind / H PLUS SON TB14) and fat -- for me -- Compass 38mm tires. To say I
was astonished at how lively the bike feels, all subjective of course, is a
whopping understatement. A totally delightful surprise. I'm probably
willing to admit that it feels just as fast and 'sporty' and pleasing in
every regard as my sweet old RAM.

The only nitpicking thing I don't care for is that kickstand plate, but
some HHs are found with those things, too.

Wow, those tires and a light, well-designed frame are just ridiculous and
may have changed my crusty old thinking regarding these set ups. So I'll
line up with those who guess that you'll likely be splitting vey fine hairs
to compare the two.

We have a new black SAM arriving soon (my son's actually) to compliment a

it road worthy.

Specifically, we have H Plus SON TB14 rims we are building around a White

easy-to-use) calculator so we can determine spoke length for this
configuration? I'm a seasoned wheel builder but working with wheel
calculators has never been much fun for me, haha!

Better yet, if someone can just hammer it out for me, I'll send you a $10

Yes, indeed!

I KNOW because I worked for TESTORS for nearly a quarter-century and also
with GRANT over a period of months to get him dozens of paint samples and
many sets of paint chips. (He will remember those early morning FED EX
deliveries I'm quite sure.) In the early 2000s, his intention was to have
all RIV frames painted to match TESTORS for the great convenience,
but...alas...that morphed over time as often things do in this life.

ATLANTIS, however, was the first of the experiments and so is exactly
TESTORS 2135. That's the story and I'm sticking to it!

[RBW] Re: In praise of Spur-cycles bells

2017-06-29 Thread Jock Dewey
Hey, BellBOBs:

Indeed, you are correct sir -- SPUR CYCLE bells are the Campy Nuovo Record
of dingers. The joy is if you have a few bikes then you're helping keep
these guys going and that's a good thing.

We bought our first one on the Kickstarter program several years ago and
once it came had to have them all around. It's a tiny jewel of engineering
and altho $$ for its size, the sound is BIG and BRIGHT and wakes you up.
Like the little wrens at our bird feeders, you simply can't believe such a
tiny object sings such a big beautiful song.

The only discord they strike is this: I ride a lot with my son, and altho
he has them on his bikes, too, he cringes when I acknowledge our fellow
riders in passing. Being the cheerful chap I am, I just can't help ringing
and waving. One pal (affectionately I think) calls me the 'ice cream man'.
Why have the thing if you don't use it, right?

Re: [RBW] So many Rivs on the chopping block

2017-06-21 Thread Jock Dewey
Good points, Garth.

One of our heroes (some of us here anyway), Jobst Brandt, likely pedaled
hundred and hundreds of miles on gravel wearing tubulars and Campy
modulators rather than brakes...as did thousands of hardy TdF riders BITD.
But trends do gain momentum, I suppose.

It seems to me also quite likely the concept of 'gravel bike' was created
by brilliant bike industry minds looking for ways to sell more stuff. I'd
probably be concerned if I thought the availability of the disc brakes we
have been using so capably and safely for 80 or 90 years (much of that on
gravel for sure) was going away, but clearly it isn't...nor will it anytime
soon, thankfully, IMHO.

[RBW] Re: When is a bike old?

2017-02-27 Thread Jock Dewey
Addison, et. al.:

Yes, indeed, been thinking a lot about that lately myself. Other riders
comment favorably all the time on my beautiful 'old' bike, even when it was
'new' in 2004. Like you, I just smile and thank them for their kind
generosity and sharp eye. And actually, some bits ARE what even I would
call old -- but also some, quite a few actually, are new as almost
yesterday.

Someone once wisely advised me that 'there's no need to educate the bus
driver if you're getting off at the next stop.' But we all like to receive
the 'thanks' due to a fine compliment.

So here's my pix for the day on that machine.

Cheers!

Hey, Doug:

Thanks for the 'redirect'.

What a heart-warming, beautifully written piece by Herb C. It just gives me
the 'warm fuzzies' and it's so much fun and so satisfying to know that
Grant's work is now receiving all the praise, even from the fringes these

Re: [RBW] My Cantis cant get no respect.

2017-01-12 Thread Jock Dewey
Wow! There are similar squabblings taking place right now vis-a-vis
cranksets on the BOB list.

I've collected a stash of NOS Suntour XC pro cantis over the years as they
are, to my eye, just delightfully elegant and simple. Those gleaming
pointy-hat fixing bolts just make me smile.

But I digress; I have them installed on three very nice bicycles, with
thick, chunky Scott-Mathauser pads & thin Eagle (orange) pads and they were
all easily adjusted with no squealing. I ride fast (sometimes) and have
just never noticed any fork flex or modulation issues. And I've never run a
red light or careened off a mountain pass...yes we have mountains in
GA--including two formidable up & downs: Hogpen Gap & Brasstown Bald. Man,
if you don't bend a fork braking down either one of those beasts, you ain't
gonna bend a fork, ha!

I guess, with nearly all things bicycle, this wise rule applies: YMMV.

[RBW] Need Help Pricing MB-1

2017-01-05 Thread Jock Dewey
Hey, y'alls:

My son is in the advocacy biz (BikeAthens) and they also have a shop that
refurbishes bikes (BRP / Bicycle Recycling Program) for those in need and
underprivileged kids. They accept donated bikes in every condition you can
imagine and what they don't give away, they sell to fund their programs.

So they just got in a white MB-1 in original condition. It's a bit rough
but no dents, only chip-rust and not much of that...and some parts, i.e.
wheels, BB, etc. are in really good shape. All Suntour XC Pro, Sanshin
hubs, nice Ritchey stem, fork, rims, seatpin, etc. He's got lousy pix, so
I'll forego that for now.

They're trying to decide whether to part out or perhaps 'BAY it to get
maximum $$ out of it.

What do you Bridgestone aficionados think this thing might be worth?
Reasonable guesses, not pie-in-the-sky. It's 19.5 frame I do believe.

Hey, TIA for your help. It's a very good cause BTW.

Oh, yes, yes...you are right about the rain!! And if we don't get it now
through the winter, we're screwed! Our local reservoir was down maybe 10'
I'll bet.

Good, we should def make some plans. There aren't a whole lot of us around,
you know; weed out the carbons and it would be just about left to me, ha!
Oh, I do have pal here who actually builds frames (just for himself, too
bad) so that's one more. Wow, 2 of us!

I think all of my bikes are right about 24.5 lbs. Who knows how accurate my
scale is but either add or unwind some tape and they'd all be the same. I
simply can't tell the difference, certainly not riding, that's why I got
brave and tried the scale. I was afraid of more, and I didn't want to know!
We're a screwy bunch, that's for sure.

Good luck with the L'Avecaise. Great looking bike, surely a great ride, and
from all accounts a good guy building them. Properly priced, too, IMHO.

Merry Christmas, Bill, and keep in touch.

Yes, Brewster, thanks.

Although it's "Limited" and not the "A", so some would say not-so-great. It
was a fantastic ride for many years and many thousands of miles--so
well-crafted. Gorgeous. It's right above my bench. The thing's in wonderful
shape and will put it back together one of these days. A little small, but
everyone in '75 or so crammed themselves on frames too small, saved weight,
made 'em stiffer, ha! I recall reading Jan talk about leaving his rubber
Mafac brake hoods off to 'save weight'! We just can't get away from it.

2016-10-15 Thread Jock Dewey
Hey, All:

I'm looking for a left side LOGIC crank arm, 170mm silver in good shape.
The generation with the sort of 'soft arrow' shape at the top and LOGIC on
the flatish arm.

I'd be interested if you have one. Thanks so much for looking.

[RBW] Re: A plug to buy something from Rivendell Bicycle Works: A Nitto F-15 rack

2016-09-23 Thread Jock Dewey
Hey, Bill, et. al.:

Count me in, too.

I've had Boxy & F15 on my bikes for 16 years (and an NOS set stashed
carefully away waiting for another sometime or other). Best combo ever. I'm
always partial to having the bag level with the top of the bars...that
thing down over the front wheel doesn't work for me...aesthetically, ha!
Fashion has its consequences, so they say.

Workhorse stuff that's so so well made. Long Live Riv.

[RBW] Re: Which bikes should Rivendell keep selling?

2016-09-15 Thread Jock Dewey
Y'all: As another just mentioned and good point, too: if it's not a
'stocking' bike, why not leave that part of the menu as is?

Roadeo, Atlantis, customs, Hillborne (altho this one is stocking, right?),
etc. can all stay, yes? It's always a bit sad when a favorite disappears,
so keep as many as possible. Me? After 12 years, I'm having my RAM
repainted (paint nearly perfect, but some corrosion on the lug shoulders,
etc.), it is such a very nice frame. As said, sad to see it go (altho
Roadeo is most suitable replacement).

[RBW] Re: FS: Blue Newbaum's

2016-08-18 Thread Jock Dewey
Hey, T-O-STAR Bobs:

We started hoarding Tressostar years ago fearing it was going away. Now
we've got a pyramid of the beautiful stuff all piled up nicely on the
bench. We sleep like a baby knowing it's there, ha. Quite a few different
colors but mostly black. Lots of black as it ages better, IOHO.

We must confess to stretching...really s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g...a thin
couple-o-inches run of cheap 'cork' (what IS that?) across the tops to
provide just a bit of kush behind the hoods mostly. You'd never know it was
there but we've grown to like just that little bit of thickness.

BTW, to engage in some unabashed name dropping, my old riding pal, Lon
Haldeman (we from NorIL), the undisputed champion of long distance cycling,
always layered cloth tape. His palmares includes countless, legendary,
epic, jaw-dropping rides, one after another, for decades. And when were all
younger, the only wrappings were essentially Benotto plastic and
Tressostar. Our T-starred arms and hands have aged just wonderfully and
thankfully and gracefully we keep on keepin' on!

Sheathed in cloth always, from steamy Athens, GA.
