Thing is, even if they'd just add the tiniest stupid little things to each release, which would take close to zero effort, I'd still pay maintenance for it forever. I think most would be happy to pay just to make sure that Softimage doesn't break with future graphics drivers, OS versions etc.

Unfold doesn't pack existing Unique UVs, it only packs UV islands that has been created with Unfold. One trick I use sometimes is: - Create an Edge cluster with all the UV islands borders: select an island with comp.sync in polygon, select its borders with rctools and create a cluster. Repeat
