Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] A little rant about LMS

2015-12-06 Thread Michael Herger

The software I have all sorts of problem with, its outdated. I don't
mind the use of a browser for playing and making playlist and what not
but why not use the new technology thats around? Making a large playlist
now is a pain. I could make one in Foobar or something and then save and
update the playlist but why should I have too? WHy cant I just drag a
song from a folder directly into LMS? I know its possible to implement.

No, you don't _know_ it is possible, you _assume_ it.

How would my server stream the files I drag from my computer to whatever
interface? It can't, because my server is not allowed to access to my
computer's files.

The UI is old and not at all good I think. I like the one Spotify have
for its webplayer, columns where you just click and/or drag. As far as I
can tell LMS haven't change at all since I started using it while the
available tech have change alot. Is there no one developing the software
anymore? Is there alternative? Why sint it open source or somthing to
let others develop it or make alternativ server software?

Perfectly valid questions. I'm sure quite a few people are willing to
pay a few bucks for a good UI. See eg. the various apps for smartphones
and tablets. They prove it's technically possible to do a nice UI, and
that it can sell.

Get your hands dirty and let us know when you're done.

All this have most certainly been brought up before or I would be
suprised.

Oh, I see. You didn't even try to find answers to your questions? Fair
enough: your subject contains the term "rant".

Why Logitech, why?

Because they dropped the product several years ago. It's now up to you
(the community) to improve things.

Yes, 7.9 is under +/- active development. It's a community build, not
supported by Logitech (only sponsored - as I'm the main contributor :-)).

I thought the Squeezebox was dead.

The product is no longer marketed by Logitech, that's true. But there's
still an active community here.

Should I be downloading each update as it becomes available, or are
these all the same files (just being archived with a new date)?

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Cache scrobbles in LMS

2016-01-02 Thread Michael Herger

OK, apologies for reactivating this query, but my experience over the
last few weeks has been that when running LMS (a recent 7.9.0 nightly)
on a MacBook (OSX 10.11.2) without internet access, scrobbles aren't
reliably cached. At least, when I later connect the MacBook to the
internet few, if any, plays are scrobbled (usually none).

This certainly never was implemented with your use case in head. Using
an online service without internet connection is rather border line...

Did you ever enable debug logging for plugin.audioscrobbler? It might
give you some indication about what's wrong. I do know for sure that you
can't queue up an unlimited number of tracks. The server would only
accept a certain number (which I don't know by heart).

iTunes Artwork indeed can't easily be shown. There's an experimental

work or not. Give it a try.

Much simpler is embedding the artwork into the music files. Don't know

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] 7.9 nightly and unix_timestamp

It may not be an LMS bug, but it seems related somehow to the LMS
version, as I can go back and forth to the 7.9.0-1447333834 version,
where the issue is not exhibited whatsoever.

Ok, it's not a bug, but a change in behaviour. Would your plugins work
if you disabled the fulltext search plugin?

The problem is that SQLPlaylist is using a hacky way to register its
custom SQL functions. I did the same for the Fulltext Search plugin
until a few weeks ago. But as I was running into similar issues as
SQLPlaylist is running into now, I decided to provide a well defined way
to handle those custom functions:

https://github.com/Logitech/slimserver/commit/58b361a26dc5867ca312cf6565dca3392d15dbcf

Unfortunately this changes the way SQL connections are handled a tad
little bit. And this little change conflicts with an assumption Erland
did make when he implemented his solution.

I think his plugins might work again if you disable the fulltext search.
But he should update them anyway.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Wavpack tags not recognised

2016-06-08 Thread Michael Herger

The problem has been the size of the tags (inc. artwork). The .wv files
have APEv2 and 1D3v1 tags. I find, with these files, that the only tags
that can be read by LMS are the ID3v1 versions. I found that I had to
reduce the size of the tags & the artwork for LMS to correctly read them
due to the ID3v1 character limit. The tags are then readable, though
obviously limited. I am talking Classical music here, so this is a
nuisance.

What if you used flac instead?

That's usually a temporary issue, as a.) some builds take a little
longer than the others, and b.) there's some caching involved. You don't
always get real-time results. Try again in a bit from now. Or go to
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/7.9/sc instead and browse your
way to the latest manually.

Just make sure the old and the new server are running at the same time.
Or shut down one of them, edit its server.prefs file to remove the

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] library.db Corrupt Auto-rebuild

2016-06-02 Thread Michael Herger
For the moment I wouldn't worry to much about the cause of the
corruption. It happens. Just shut down LMS, delete the file, restart.

Should this kind of problem occur more often, then it's probably time to
investigate the root cause.

BTW: some of your partitions are rather small (in particular /tmp).
Where is your library.db stored? If /opt is indeed part of /, then
there's only 14MB left. Not enough for LMS.

I can only see 7.9 here - in the nightly section.
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.9 - is it the one I
should install for a stable build???

Yes, I'd say so.

That said, it still is under development. It's not finalized, released,
you name it. It's really stable at this point, but I'm committing
changes every now and then. It's been rather quiet recently, therefore
it's a good moment to hop on the 7.9 train.

You will get update notifications whenever a new build is available -
this can be daily (can be disabled in Settings/Advanced/Software
Updates). You might check back with the forums if you want to be sure to
not install a broken update.

Does this:

Creating new database - empty, outdated or invalid database found

indicate a new db was created?

No, it only indicates that there is no music data in the database. When
a new db is created, then of course you would get it. But also if you
deleted its content manually, if the scanner crashed before it actually
stored any data, if your music folder was empty etc.

I must silence that warning... it's confusing too many people.

Also, the last time LMS crashed was
months ago but could that have lead to 5/30 corruption? Thanks!

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Rescan without warning, then other plugin errors

I think that when I closed Vivaldi whilst a Settings window was on
display, on re-starting it Vivaldi was restoring that Settings window on
the first page and somehow entering Enter, triggering a rescan. Very
strange.

The rescan parameter might be part of the URL for the page shown. If
Vivaldi tries to restore the exact state as before, it would try to
re-load this very URL, which would trigger the scan. I think I vaguely
remember a similar behaviour with Opera - which was the browser the
Vivaldi makers did previously.

You should give some more information about what aspects of LMS were
slower with 7.9. In general I would expect 7.9 to be faster in most
circumstances (faster scanning, faster browsing etc.). But there are
some new features which might be too much for slower machines (eg.
fulltext search, some of the additional browse modes etc.). Most if not
all of those features are optional plugins which can be turned off.

server.log should be in /var/log/squeezeboxserver.

What does "perl -v" give you? LMS 7.7.5 is pretty old. You'll most
likely have to run 7.9 for support of your platform.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Running 2 LMS Services or Multi Library question

2016-02-29 Thread Michael Herger

I've only done it running the Perl code of LMS, but I think it should be
doable running 'compiled' EXE versions for Windows.

Yes, it should accept the same set of parameters.

I don't recall if
the LMS Windows installer lets you designate an installation folder or
not. If not, you could install one instance, move or rename its
installation folder, then install LMS a second time.

No need to install multiple instances. You can run multiple copies from
the same location. Only the data folders need to be different.

But I doubt it's the easiest solution to the OP's problem. I'd rather
try to run two different library views from the same server. If the data
is well tagged and structured, this should be pretty straight forward.

Now that I recall, running multiple instances of the EXE may not be
possible. The issue I ran into was that it never picked up the
command-line option pointing to a different prefs folder. Works with the
Perl code.

I thought I had fixed this almost exactly one year ago:

Is it possibe to avoid that the files that are in my playlist files

artists, genres etc.) when scanning?

If you don't mind editing your playlists in a text editor: use LMS 7.9,
replace all file:// urls in your playlist with tmp://. LMS 7.9 should be
able to play those files without adding them to the library.

That volatile file handler is way more helpful than I initially thought.
It helped me implement various features like continuing playback during

Now I finally should fix playing playlists without storing their content.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS: Where is SQLITE located, which came w/ LMS install?

2016-01-25 Thread Michael Herger
SQLite, unlike most other databases like eg. MySQL, is an embedded database.
There's no sqlite application or server. But the whole database code is built
in to the application (the DBI::SQLite Perl module in our case). Therefore
you'll have to either use Perl for your application or find a SQLite
implementation for your language of choice.

Yes, they can live side by side. They could even be using different
