Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Logitech Media Server on Ubuntu 20.04

2020-12-23 Thread Norfolk

Same here. I have a headless ubuntu server, starting like 2009 and since
then upgrading from LTS to LTS, now its 20.04.

Similar, i run squeezeboxserver on it, also since like 2009, which now
was upgraded from 7.9.1 to the nightly build v8.0.1, 1608617100 in
64bit, installed with dpkg -i and the all-debian file. Giving that
"dpkg"-command in a SSH-shell was the only thing I had to do after
upgrading ubuntu itself with the usual do-release-upgrade. I even had
that guide with the init.d-script already ready in my browser but didn't
need it after all.

So far, it works perfekt and feels almost like the 7.9.1 I ran before.
Since I use radios, the server showed me that mini how-to regarding
installing the "version fix patch" on them, which also worked withouth
issues.

Thx for your work!
Norfolk

I can confirm that version Logitech Media Server Version: 8.0.0 -
1605892076 @ Fri Nov 20 21:27:07 CET 2020 works in Ubuntu 20.04 (focal)

(FWIW - Ubuntu is running as a VM with music files on a Freenas box)

with SSH, I did an in place upgrade from 16.04 -> 18.04 Then I did same
for an upgrade to 20.04..

after reboot, went to /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache and did a wget

wget
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/LogitechMediaServer_v8.0.0/logitechmediaserver_8.0.0_amd64.deb

Finally using duo remote I did factory restore, setup wireless and voila
! Shortcuts etc still there ..

Thanks to this awesome forum for the help ...

Did you find a solution to this? I have the same issue. What I find odd

I think I've tracked this down to the use of the stanza -Required-Start:
$all- in the init script.

This is a no-op under systemd, but would have the effect of starting LMS
as late as possible on the "SysV-style init" used on Debian/Ubuntu. It's
never adversely impacted my usage of LMS, but clearly some systems do
suffer.

I've started a thread -sytemd service file for LMS-,
https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?113114-systemd-service-file-for-LMS,
with the intention of taking matters forward, if there's any interest.

I would suggest using a (modern) version of -apt- to install the
package, rather than -dpkg-. It deals with dependencies, but -dpkg-
doesn't.

See thread: -Debian packages update - Possible dpkg failure-

That's rather curious. -start-stop-daemon- is provided by package
-dpkg-, which is an 'essential' package in both Debian and Ubuntu. Is
Ubuntu 20.04 the same as 'focal' ? If so, it does seem to be included in
Ubuntu's -dpkg-.  Refer: https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/dpkg.

Which raises a question: how did your system end up with a link to
-/bin/true - ? Is this a known Ubuntu behaviour that is, perhaps, caused
by something else ?

I may be missing something.

If that was a general issue, it would have come up more often and been
fixed. I'm convinced this is a problem in your configuration or with a
file of yours. As I said: please provide a scanner.log with more

I run ubuntu 20.04, but always from git and my manually installed
systemd service. I also run a custom perl. This is the best way to
avoid OS updates from breaking things. Anyway.

It looks like there are 2 issues in this thread.
1) Install broken on some systems.
2) LMS starts before the internet is reachable.

#2 is a problem we run into on pCP, as network routers are very slow to
startup, and pCP is booting in 15-30 seconds. We deal with that by
waiting for the time to get set to start LMS. The concern here is there
is not a site that is "reachable from everywhere" We use google with
pCP, and that fails quite a bit from some parts of the world. So how
would we "choose" a common site for a standard install script?

As for fixing #1 would there be a reason to not convert everything to
normal systemd?

As upstart is not used anymore in Ubuntu in favor of systemd, the effort
in solving this should indeed be put into a systemd unit file. As I am
not a coder or scripter I was never able to solve it properly myself, so
hopefully somebody can come up with something which can be incorporated
in the official LMS packages.

I don't know about Upstart. A "proper" solution for systemd might be to
re-examine and rewrite the logic of the Debian init scripts into a
systemd unit file. In the process addressing/eliminating the quirky
squeezeboxserver_safe script.

As a hack to try out one could install a modified version of the
existing auto-generated service unit, and add a 'network-online'
dependency to it. It could look something like:

Code:

  [Unit]
  SourcePath=/etc/init.d/logitechmediaserver
  Description=LSB: Startup script for the Logitech Media Server
  Before=multi-user.target
  Before=graphical.target
  After=all.target
  After=network-online.target
  Wants=network-online.target

  [Service]
  Type=forking
  Restart=no
  TimeoutSec=5min
  IgnoreSIGPIPE=no
  KillMode=process
  GuessMainPID=no
  RemainAfterExit=yes
  SuccessExitStatus=5 6
  ExecStart=/etc/init.d/logitechmediaserver start
  ExecStop=/etc/init.d/logitechmediaserver stop

This is based on the auto-generated file
-/run/systemd/generator.late/logitechmediaserver.service-, but  I have
added the two 'network-online.target' lines with the intention of
preventing LMS from starting before the network.

The revised unit file should be saved as
-/etc/systemd/system/logitechmediaserver.service-, and the system
restarted.

It works on my Debian system, but I have not tested that it actually
solves the network problem that it seeks to address, simply because I
don't have the problem.

As a follow-up: I was worried enough about some of the reports here to
pause my planned upgrade of my main server from Ubuntu 18.04.5 to
20.04.1 while I tested a fresh install of Ubuntu (server version) on an
IntelNUC I had available.

On the IntelNUC machine:
1) after OS install, I installed nfs-common and mounted the music files
residing on my main server over NFS and made sure it was working ok.
Nothing else was installed.
2) I downloaded LMS (logitechmediaserver_8.0.0~1602486506_amd64.deb)
using wget
3) installed with "sudo -i ", but that
failed with unresolved dependency for libio-socket-ssl-perl
4) "apt install libio-socket-ssl-perl" also failed because of unresolved
dependencies, but "apt --fix-broken install" was recommended.
5) running "apt --fix-broken install" resolved all issues; a handful of
other packages were downloaded and installed in addition to
libio-socket-ssl-perl, but unfortunately I didn't make a note of them
:-(

After this LMS started nicely using "systemctl start
logitechmediaserver". No problem with start-stop-daemon, it was there -
installed as part of the OS-package (package lsb-base). (I suspect
alex.h's problems arose from a failed OS update?)
I then ran LMS on the IntelNUC for 2-3 days to make sure there were no
other sissues, but none appeared. I then upgraded my main server to
Ubuntu 20.04.1, and much to my relief the upgrade went fine and LMS
worked as before.
(My main server is very old, cirka 2007 I believe. I installed Ubuntu
12.04 LTS in 2013 and since I have upgraded to 14.04 -> 16.04 -> 18.04,
so it has most likely picked up a lot of entropy in terms of old and
unsupported packages etc. OS upgrades don't remove packages that are
installed outside the package manager.)

If there is any interest in what extra packages were installed when
running "apt --fix-broken install", I'd be happy to retrace my steps and
massage the IntelNUC with a new fresh install.

LMS is running OK here on Xubuntu 20.04. I always try to stick with the
defaults, so I don't think there is a structural issue with LMS as
described in github.

The only problems I am having are old (and have been around for years):

FWIW, I tried it too -- with basically the same results. In my case I
got a stable squeezeboxserver_safe, a stable squeezeboxserver, and then
a second instance of squeezeboxserver that would die and be restarted
every 5 seconds.

I don't know exactly how squeezeboxserver_safe works, but I tried for a
little while to debug the problem anyway. Didn't see anything obvious,
though, and my linux distro includes start-stop-daemon -- so I reverted
to the init script from the .deb package, and everything works fine
again.

LMS 7.9.3 has been running on Xubuntu 20.04 for a few months now,
without issues (I still have to test all library scan function however).
I don't use custom start scripts, only a manually added line to
/etc/rc.local because LMS is started before the network is up. This has
been an issue since the day Ubuntu started using Upstart and nowadays
Systemd instead of classic init-scripts. It might be necessary to first
enable /etc/rc.local on your system depending on your configuration.

Code:

  # 07/05/2015: added logitechmediaserver restart due to incompatibilities with
upstart

  /etc/init.d/logitechmediaserver restart

With this file, and the one before it, I can start logitechmediaserver
but it shuts down every 5 seconds and spawns a new process.

service logitechmediaserver stop -> stops and disables the web
interface
service logitechmediaserver start -> web interface runs

However, due to the constant restarts, nothing works, not a single
player (all upnp players) are found.

px aux | grep logitechmediaserver or ps aux | grep squeeze doesn't show
any other instances running

Can't seem to fix this at all.

Can anyone help me out?

thanks

Lucky you. Did not work for me. But the box is damn old. XP is still on
another partition.

Tonight I have done an upgrade from Xubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 on one of my
machines as a test. After the upgrade LMS 7.9.3 is still installable and
running without issues or manual Linux configuration. It can also be
started and stopped without problems.

So I guess the OP's system is indeed missing some compatibility INIT
packages as I suggested above.

I would bet, there will be a package available when you want to install.
There are some packages for 18.04 and the maintainer did some
customisation for ubuntu.

I plan to upgrade my Xubuntu 18.04LTS installations to 20.04 when the
first point release is there, and my first impression when reading this
thread is that it should be possible to install some compatibility
packages to run applications / services with classic init scripts. Have
you looked into this option?

On a sidenote: in my opinion the time has come to seriously consider
using LMS in a container when running it on regular Linux installations
based upon Ubuntu f.e.. I know the community over here is already busy
with it and although I know it is not ready for prime yet, I strongly
think it is the way forward for LMS for that type of installations.

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Logitech Media Server on Ubuntu 20.04

2020-05-11 Thread alex.h

I posted this already to 'askubuntu.com'
(https://askubuntu.com/questions/1188506/how-to-install-logitech-media-server-squeezebox-server)
and the 'ubuntu forum'
(https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2443133) but maybe it is of
interest here too. I could not register to his forum when I succeeded
solving my problem to post this guide here in the first place.

I upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04 and that broke my installation but I figured
out how to make it work again:

After some tempering around, I considered to do a fresh install. So I
deleted the old stuff in /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/

Then I got me a fresh deb-packet from:
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=8.0

Personally I used the version for the most plattforms but depending on
plattform just select a fitting deb:

Code:

wget http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nig...180193_all.deb

I Installed it with:

Code:

dpkg -i logitechmediaserver_8.0.0_1588799628_all.deb

As I tried older versions too and even tried a git checkout I hope I
lack no detail another script has already done for me without noticing
it.

If the dpkg installation not already added a user and group please do
so:

Code:

adduser squeezeboxserver
  usermod -a -G squeezeboxserver squeezeboxserver

Create a directory for the pid file:

Code:

mkdir /var/run/logitechmediaserver

And give it to that user and group:

Code:

chown squeezeboxserver:squeezeboxserver /var/run/logitechmediaserver

Same goes for the stuff in /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/

Code:

chown squeezeboxserver:squeezeboxserver /var/lib/squeezeboxserver
  chown -R squeezeboxserver:squeezeboxserver /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/*

The problem comes with the startup script in /etc/init.d. It simply does
not work, as Ubuntu 20.04 does not have the start-stop-daemon any more.
It is simply linked to /bin/true which might work for some scripts but
does not work for the logitechmediaserver. I tried a C implementation
for this program, but it had it hinges so I dropped the
start-stop-daemon and modified the startup program arcordingly.

Just store the old startup script away (just to be save) and paste the
attachment into an editor of your choice on your server or simply copy
it to your filesystem and remove that .txt postfix. Without it, I could
not upload it.

That script is not pretty, but it does the job for me and will hopefully
help you too. You have to place it in /etc/init.d under the name
logitechmediaserver

After that you have to run the following command to make systemctl
happy:

Code:

systemctl daemon-reload

Just give it a test run with starting it:

Code:

/etc/init.d/logitechmediaserver start

You should be able to log in with your webbrowser to
http://YourServerIP:9000/ and configure it.

30266

And test if it does shut down again:

Code:

/etc/init.d/logitechmediaserver stop

When everything has worked out, enable the service:

Code:

systemctl enable logitechmediaserver.service
