This one is not so clear. First, it talks about Usenet, which AFAIK
Mozilla news is not. Second, it says specifically to the alt.bin and
alt.bain newsgroup hierarchies that provide actual data files, which
doesn't cover us either.

Well, okay, I guess access to the mozilla.* isn't affected - but that's
only a couple dozen groups. What VZ, ATT, Comcast, etc have done is
they have closed down their *own* servers that mirrors the
mumble-thousand of Usenet groups.

http://www.afterdawn.com/news/article.cfm/2008/06/15/verizon_shuts_down_access_to_usenet

This one is clearer, mentioning innocuous tech support groups by name.

If the ISPs get enough complaints, they'll tailor their restrictions
narrowly as they should have in the first place.

We complained bitterly (see ATT below). Remember, we are among the
'less-than-2%' of ISP subscribers who even know what a newsgroup is.
It's a very small voice, and it didn't work.

..many more. Google for: verizon cuomo usenet

He did it to ATT, Comcast, and others. Not just New York; the ISPs
removed it nationwide.

There will be no Usenet access with your FiOS.

You're not 'at risk.' Just go get a free account at
eternal-september.org or a €10/year account at news.individual.net
which is very reliable.

I never realized my ISP was even a party to these transactions; I
thought they were just a common carrier that transmitted whatever
data I sent or requested. Now, I don't go in for kiddie porn, but if
I wanted to download perfectly legal adult material I don't see what
business of theirs it would be.

You can still go download pr0n, even kiddie pr0n if you want. You just
ain't gonna get it from any server Verizon owns. The binary groups are
still there, humming along nicely I suppose. All that was killed was the
major ISP access via their servers.

There is an unmentioned point here (but since you're looking for
details) and that is the Cuomo Crusade gave the ISPs the *EXCUSE* to
shut down their NNTP server farms, and *save a lot* of money, while
blaming it all on the politically-ambitious NY AG. Nowhere in any of any
ISP's publications did they publically admit this.

I was an ATT Worldnet subscriber until mid-2008. Our internal
newsgroups (support, user-to-user support, general...) were staffed by
employees. Keeping friendly watch on us chickens, so to speak. In
private email, they told me it was the perfect reason for them to just
pull the entire plug on providing Usenet for anyone.

The ATT guy said they would now save somewhere around 4 Terrabytes per
day in bandwidth as well (the entire Usenet).

If all you care about are the mozilla groups, you're in great shape. I
thought you were interested in Usenet as well.

Oh, and speaking of small voices, the nearly two million Worldnet
subscribers are losing everything except their email on March 31st.
Worldnet itself is going away. They must migrate their email to other
ATT brands (att.yahoo.com f'r ex) and give up their dialup access,
personal web pages et al.

I apologize for the length.

Tried eternal-September and just timed out. I removed it.

I much prefer the news reader interface for reading news groups (such

By the way, my ISP provides a fairly complete list of usenet news groups

Hi Frog,

Read up a bit on Usenet:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet

Most of the groups you are looking for are accessible via Usenet. As
Beau has explained, most ISP's have dropped newsgroup support. I am
fortunate in that Cox retains newsgroups, though they are outsourced.

The Mozilla Support groups you are seeing now are not a part of Usenet.
They can only be accessed s newsgroups through the news.mozilla.org
server, as you are doing now. I don't have any interest in the MS
groups, so I won't speak to them.

There is no one dedicated server for groups such as Genealogy. These
groups are accessible via Usenet. Since you ISP does not provide Usenet
access, you will need to find a newsgroup provider. That will allow you
to find the groups you want.

With the interests you mention, I agree with most, a free server will do
the job for you. I have had great success with Eternal-September:

http://www.eternal-september.org/

Sign up for a free account, then follow the directions to set it up. YOu
will find all kinds of text based groups for your iterest areas.

I apologize for the length.

mean File - Subscribe?

SM should be managing two types of accounts for you: E-Mail accounts
and News Group accounts.

When I select my e-mail account (I use an IMAP server), I can subscribe
to specific mail boxes within that account.

When I select a news server account, I can subscribe to specific news
groups within that server. As an example, on news.mozilla.org news
server, I have subscribed to the mozilla.support.seamonkey news group
(among others).

Is there some place on the web that will help me with this subject?

This news groups seems fine :)

Also, I think I will have to establish a new entry in the Mail
Newsgroups Account Settings for each group I subscribe to--is that correct?

Not for each news group you subscribe to. You just create a Newsgroup
account for the news server (like news.mozilla.org or one provided by
your ISP), then you can subscribe to individual news groups provided
by that server.

I know that the answers to my questions are located someplace on the

If you mean the different accounts in news.mozilla.org you can left
click on the Bold name and select manage subscriptions and then click
on mozilla to see what they have. If you want microsoft sites go to
edit- mail and newsgroups-add new news account- put msnews.microsoft.com
port 119 . You might also look here

I don't know what you mean by Accounts here. Do you mean e-mail accounts?
ISP accounts? Perhaps if you could provide us the names of these accounts,
it will become clearer.

By accounts I am referring to sites similar to the following (the three
that I currently have on my system):

microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
mozilla.support.seamonkey
news.verizon.net
I have found the Microsoft and Mozilla groups to be a great place to
learn things about my computer and an even greater place find help when
I don't know how to solve a problem. The news.verizon.net is, however,
a mystery--Verizon is my ISP. When looking at the SeaMonkey mail window
I do the following: Click GoI click news.verison.net in the drop
down window that appearsa window titled Subscription opens and it
appears that my computer is attempting to connect to Verizon. After a
short time, a new window opens with the following comment--Connection to
server news.verizon.net timed out. The subscription window does not
list any news groups that I can subscribe to.

I was thinking that there must be thousands, if not millions, of such
sites on the Internet. I thought maybe there would be ones for
genealogy--bird watching--travel, etc. As I have likely stated on this
group before, I am retired and attempting to keep my mind busy learning
new things.

I hope this clarifies what I was referring to when I used Accounts in
my first message. I used accounts simply because each of the three
accounts listed above are included under EditMail Newsgroups Account
settings... on the SeaMonkey mail window. I called them accounts based
on this information.

When I click File (on the SeaMonkey Mail page)open Subscribe--I can
only see the three Accounts that are currently subscribed to on my
system. Should I be able to (somehow) access the complete listing from

I'm using SM 1.1.16, but I don't see File - Open - Subscribe. Did you
mean File - Subscribe?

Yes, FileSubscribe.

SM should be managing two types of accounts for you: E-Mail accounts
and News Group accounts.

That is correct. Included under EditMail Newsgroups Account settings
is a fourth Account for my E-Mail.

When I select my e-mail account (I use an IMAP server), I can subscribe
to specific mail boxes within that account.

See comment above. I am unable to connect to the Verizon listing of
newsgroups because of a time out problem.

When I select a news server account, I can subscribe to specific news
groups within that server. As an example, on news.mozilla.org news
server, I have subscribed to the mozilla.support.seamonkey news group
(among others).

I can also access sub news groups under Mozilla and Microsoft. I was
looking for some method of accessing other news groups pertaining to
other subjects.

Is there some place on the web that will help me with this subject?

OK. I think I understand. Once I have a Mozilla account established on
my system--I can have any number of Mozilla subscriptions under this
Mozilla account.

I understand about subscribing to other Mozilla newsgroups listed under
the Mozilla account on my system. I also have an account on my system
for Microsoft. Lets say that I wanted to establish an account for
genealogy--where do I find server addresses for this subject?

I made a quick review of the two web sites you referenced above. Because
of the time (1 AM), I will explore both sites in more depth
tomorrow--I'm about to go to sleep.
