Hi everyone!

I, for my part, only collect for IBM. My parents bought an IBM PC in

I have been collecting PC games since then and I must have now somewhere

bought a single adventure games because, as a player, I did not like that
kind of games very much. Now, as a more serious collector, I try to acquire
the classic adventure games as well.

Re: [SWCollect] New topic--Collectors UNITE!

2003-02-04 Thread Pedro Quaresma

I collect RPGs in general for the following platforms (in order of preference):

IBM
AppleII
Amiga
C64
Atari ST
Sinclair Spectrum (probably not worth mentioning as I believe there are only two interesting/known RPGs on it: Bard's Tale and Times of Lore)

I usually skip RPGs that do not exist on the IBM platform (which means, for example, I don't mind having a Bard's Tale on any of the above platforms, but if Bard's Tale never had an IBM PC version, I would not want it).

The list above stands true for Ultimas, although with some extra exceptions, namely Atari 8 bits and some japanese platforms.

Well, except that this is only accurate to two significant digits. :P
You'd have to get exact birthdates from everyone for the digits after the
decimal point tomean anything, heh.

Seriously, we all are rather young. I always thought this hobby would
attract more people who were around when Zork was played on mainframes
 and who now approach 50.

Hmm ... well, actually, this is what I expected. Zork-on-mainframes has
not been around that much longer than Zork-on-personal-computers. Also,
and more importantly, commerical personal computing gaming software just
didn't exist until the late 70's. You can't really collect freeware
gaming programs like Roguelikes :)

That doesn't explain it all -- it used to be that the average age of
computer gamers was around 35-40 (this has been steadily declining for
several reasons), so you'd expect people who played lots of games in the
early 80's to be 55-60 today (eep!) People don't typically feel nostalgia
for things that happens when they were 35-40; it's often things that
happened when they were kids or teenagers or in their early twenties.
And a big motivation for collecting is nostalgia. So we're the lower end
of the 80's gamers, 15-20 years later.

That's my theory.

RE: [SWCollect] New topic--Collectors UNITE!

2003-02-03 Thread Stuart Feldhamer
WellI mostly collect for IBM, but it doesn't have much to do with my
age. My first computer was a TRS-80 Model I, then a Model 3, then an Atari
800 XL, then a Commodore 128, and then a PC AT. The reason I mostly collect
for IBM is that I collect newer games too, and I need to somehow restrict
the number of titles I have, for space considerations. And most, if not all,
of the games that I'd ever want to play/collect are available in
PC-compatible versions. (There are some exceptions, of course)

I also only collect adventure games, for the most part.

Referring to another discussion: I also own an Ultima II large box. In

with a Buy It Now! of $25. Who was I to turn that down? It had even been

I go away for a week and this mailing EXPLODES! Sheesh :)

Anyway, I'm 29. I'd tell you how many months but no one else seems to be
either, so there :)

Referring to another discussion: I also own an Ultima II large box. In
fact, I don't have either of the other two package types available for IBM
at all -- this is the only U2 solo I have at all. Some idiot put this up
with a Buy It Now! of $25. Who was I to turn that down? It had even
been up for like four hours when I nailed it, too. The box is in rough
shape, unfortunately, so it's not worth the full $200 or so, but it's
still one of my great prizes.

This is usually good for a double take in a conversation, and what better timing. My
birthday is 6/6/66 and the person who did the sound for The Exorcist and, I think,
The Omen is named Chris Newman.

Don't make me angry. Just don't.

[snip]

Devil's advocate: We all worship the oldies, and have fond memories
of playing them. But, any titles you've played for a thousand hours way
back when that you light up now and can't play for more than 10 minutes for
some non-technical reason? (bad controls, overly simplistic, etc.) Nah,
unthinkable.

Short answer: Happens now and then, I guess :)

Long answer: I think it's proportional to the time you've dedicated to it in the past. I still play a lot of the Spectrum's Formula 1 now and then on an emulator, and most of the RPGs I enjoyed in the early 90s I still pick them up to play again (or else why am I building a retro-gaming 486?!). But obviously if you think of a game you just played for a few hours/days back then you won't be dedicating some minutes to it nowadays.

Research, mostly. Looked at other lists of adventure games, got most of the
early CGW issues and went through them. I check catalogs that come in game
boxes, sometimes they list additional titles I haven't heard of. Got a

Well, I suppose we are all roughly in the same age group. I'm 36 and I
think Jim, Romero, and CE are in their mid 30s too. Wackys were a major
phenomenon of the early to mid 70s. Topps literally sold each set in the
millions (saw an order from from Topps to a printing company for one of
their runs, and they ordered 15 million stickers. That's ALOT of
 wackiness! :)

Re: [SWCollect] New topic--Collectors UNITE!

2003-01-29 Thread C.E. Forman
There's another thought I had concerning this: many of us have games in
their original shrinkwrap. The manufacturers of these games probably
never figured they would ever stay for so long in that shrinkwrap, so
might we actually create ourselves a problem if we leave those precious
games in there? There is surely no air circulation going on through the
 shrinkwrap.

Good shrinkwrap jobs have the pencil-eraser hole in the front and back.

I may have actually brought this up in a column once (or was going to): If
the shrink threatens to compress and damage the package, we may have to
decide slitting it slightly is acceptable. Like the action figure
collectors who decided cutting the spare battery out of the package was
better than having it rupture and leak acid all over an MIP fig.

That's correct, 28. Though I vaguely remember Wacky Packs. Got a gift

fad from my era was Garbage Pail Kids, though I never got into them myself.

That's ALOT of
 wackiness! :)

I live on Long Island actually (New York). I'd REALLY like to go, as
I'm
very curious to see the faces behind the e-mails (except, of course,
for
Jim now that he sufficiently scared me by his totally unwarranted
appearance on the MindCandy DVD) but I doubt I could make it. I have a
new baby, and it's not easy to get a babysitter for an overnight.

This get-together idea is a good thing to nurture. I visit the Wacky
Packages (another of my hobbies -- remember the 70s phenomenon of
Wacky
Packages stickers? http://www.wackypacks.net ) forum over on Delphi
and
they have get togethers constantly. It adds a new level of friendship
and allows for a greater scope in the topics of the forum (because
they
know each other) and it's fun to read the back-and-forth exchanges.

That's what I figured, but my fingers will tremble when I actually have

All my collection is shrinkwrapped only. I don't need to touch the stuff
inside the box, I did that when I actually played them many years ago ;)
They look nicer in the shrinkwrap imo too. I'm not in it to make money, but
there's nothing wrong with keeping the maximum value in tact for my
collection, right? Plus, I think a collection of originally shrinkwrapped
stuff is just more impressive. ;)

 Now, next question...

Would someone who lives closer (driving distance) be willing to accept a
package with some of the stuff I'll be bringing to show off? It's too far
for me to drive (10+ hours) and I'm not chancing my items getting damaged
or
the shrink opened by airport security.

Yeah, I sort of feel the same way...what could I possibly bring that the
people on this list haven't already seen??? Personal Software Zork? IBM
King's Quest? Adventure in Serenia? Microsoft Adventure? Large box Ultima 2?

I have a lot of rarer newer titles but you guys seem much more interested in
the older stuff.

I'll be there for some part of each of the three days. Though I
can't imagine what I'd bring. Nothing I have is exceptionally rare or
unusual (to the people on this list). I've seen C.E.'s want list and I can
honestly say I've never heard of most of them. Come to think of it, how did
you come up w/that list? You played most of them? Research? Filling in

That's ALOT of
wackiness! :)

It's matured into a full-blown hobby. The original art used to generate
the stickers sells on ebay anywhere from $3,000 - $20,000. Some of the
stickers are worth quite alot of money.

It's funny when the fans of a hobby grow from innocent kids to
calculating adults and bring their wiles to bear on the hobby. All of
the manuvering they use to get a hard-to-find item is surprising. Kinda
takes the fun out of it and turns it into a cynical profiteering
enterprise.

Agree on the air circulation issue - covering games in plastic for a longer
period *may* prove fatal depending on the humidity you enshrine with them.
Make sure to puncture ziplocs if you plan to store games in them for
several years.

As for the plastic cases I would order 100 or so if they were in the $1.50
range, more if they were cheaper. I don't quite care about the size, the
bigger the are, the larger the range of games I could put in them :)

I'd highly prefer ordering custom-sized cases though (i.e. something that
snugly fits a specific box type so the package won't rattle around inside).
Perhaps we could ask other collectors outside this mailing list and see if
we can commission a larger quantity. I'm in dire need of at least 200 cases
for the classic OSI boxes.

Won't be able to attend a meeting although I'd certainly love to.

/Alexander

We agreed on the idea that if we could find some sort of inexpensive, clear,
plastic box of the clamshell variety, that would be ideal. I searched the
net for anything that would match that description, but came up empty. We
thought that if we could have a custom box made to a sof
tware collector's exacting specifications, we may be able to have a plastics
manufacturer actually create our 'software collector's box in a limited run!
So, here are the questions:

I already ventured into the idea of preservation some time last year and
read some articles on how libraries and antiquaries preserve books. From
what I read putting the boxes, which basically are cardboard and paper,
into plastic boxes might prove fatal. According to the Library of
Congress air circulation should be present:

http://www.loc.gov/preserv/presfaq.html

If you'd want to pay $1.50 for a plastic shell and order an amount of
1000, you'd might in the long run be better off to invest the money into
a humidity and temperature controller, provided you have an extra room
for your collection.

 2. C.E. and I also spoke of the possibility of a software collector's
'meet and greet' at an agreed upon event. We could get together to swap
stories, share a meal, and perhaps even bring along some of our prized
collectibles to show to each other! The Philly Classic in Philadelphia this
March, or Dragon*Con in Atlanta this August could be possible locations. I
assume that some of you would be interested in seeing the Museum's original
Akalabeth, or our genuine Wing Commander Kilrathi head! If we c
ould make this happen, we could all at least go home with a ROMERO autograph
(for a nomial fee, perhaps?) ;)
Please let me hear some ideas on locations, dates, and enthusiasms for an
idea like this.
 Would YOU attend?

I'd love to attend, but I'm in Germany, which is a little far off for
the occasion.

Would this plastic case idea work if they simply had small vent holes in
them? I'm most interested in them to prevent crushing during movement and
damage from touching (or biting in the case of my dog or son).

RE: [SWCollect] New topic--Collectors UNITE!

2003-01-25 Thread Dan Chisarick
I had a pipe burst above one of my boxes of games once. They were
spared because of some cheap loose-fitting bags sealed with a single piece
of tape. Breathable but servicable too. Certainly one can't expect plastic
boxes to protect them from everything, but I strongly agree with the
'strategically placed' comment. Perhaps just on one side?

John,

Think long and hard before you get rid of your Synergistics on ebay!
Financial gain aside why would you do it? In a few decades the infant
hobby of computer software collecting might turn into a mature,
mainstream hobby. By selling these titles you would be removing a direct
link to the very beginning of the hobby. How many hobbies can you think
of where acquiring first generation artifacts is possible?

These games are also a link to the state of the industry at the
beginning of your career, as well as the state of the art. Keep them as
pristine and innocent markers of a very exciting era.

Just my opinion...

2003-01-23 Thread hughfalk
Making games today isn't like the old days. Teams of 15 to 40 people are typical, and
project managers are necessary for a team that size. I've seen many times where a
programmer has a great game idea and therefore also wants to act as the designer or
project manager. In the past a person could easily wear many hats. Now-a-days that
is VERY difficult. A serious game design today requires a full-time lead designer,
lead programmer, lead artist and project manager throughout the course of the project.
More than once I've seen companies try to fill a few of those roles with one person
and failing. The cowboy days of game development are rare today, and the more
structured software discipline of modern games doesn't always appeal to the old-timers.

Oh and I'd definitely buy a few hundred cases at that price. I'd want SSI big box
sizes and the more standard SSI gold box sizes.

Boxes: Not sure of the sizes. I'd say something big enough to hold
an SSI wargame should be about right. I'd definitely order at least 100
of
them if they're in the $1.50/ea range.
Philly classic: That gets my vote (so what if its 35 minutes from my
house).
John Romero's sig: I don't suppose you have a small cache of your
own creations in a box somewhere that you'd sign put up for auction...

Random comment: Backhand me if I'm wrong but depressingly few
classic game developers still write games. I stumble across the
occasional
homepage of an author and they have their past creations listed around
page
3 or 4 of their online resume. And then they have project management at
the
top (yuck). With the possible exception of politics and corporate
manuverings getting in the way, how can you get bored of turning pure
thought and creativity into reality?

Re: [SWCollect] New topic--Collectors UNITE!

2003-01-23 Thread C.E. Forman
To add to what Joe wrote, my cousin currently holds a management position at
a plastics company. If we can get a large enough order to justify the
expense involved, I'd be glad to talk to him about a production run, see
what's involved. (Haven't gotten around to it yet, Joe, this Infocom
T-shirt faker has been taking up a lot of my time, but it's on my list.) I
can see myself ordering 200 - 300, easy. The more we order at once, the
lower the unit cost. This could be something they could continue
manufacturing, if the demand catches on. For the time being, I'd say
something about the size of an Infocom grey or Origin two-piecer is about
right, and maybe some a little larger. I think we're looking at 2 sizes.
You don't want to make it too small and leave your big box Ultima II out,
but they can't all be big enough to hold Suspended masks, or we're out of
shelf space. B-)

I'll put this to my readership in the next column, too.

If I can get the Friday before off, I'm definitely planning to do Philly
Classic this year. Dragon*Con is out, as I've already made plans with a
visiting German buddy for the CGE in Vegas that month. If you can make
Philly, LMK if there's anything I can bring that you'd like to see.

On plastic cases:

So far, the tally is as follows:

Museum-200
Dan-100
Brad-100
Hugh-100

Current imaginary total=500

Of course, I won't hold anyone to these numbers until I could get a more detailed idea
of cost--but I don't want to call any vendors until I can assure that there's enough
interest. I assume that we'll need about a minimum run of 1000 to 1500 to make this
happen...keep those imaginary bids coming!

As to size, Hugh writes:

Oh and I'd definitely buy a few hundred cases at that price. I'd want SSI big box

For now, I believe that we'd only stick to ONE case size, and see how that goes. My
idea is that we have cases made that would accomodate *MOST* box sizes, and the
smaller ones would fit as well. With that in mind, could anyone measure an SSI big
box for me(Hieght, Width, Depth), and we'll start with something a bit bigger as a
standard to work with. (...so that it'll fit, of course)

Or, better yet, could a few of you measure your biggest titles (after discarding the
Ultima9, Ultima2, and other 'oversizes'), and post them here, so that we can get an
idea of AVERAGE size?

You don't have to put everything in a case. I've got around 3000 games, but
I'd be thrilled if I could just put a few hundred of the most delicate in

Hello, yeah, I've also been largely absent because of busy-ness in real
life, but I'm now furnishing a large room and am now thinking of filling
the rest of the room with games :)

I think a big problem with plastic boxes is that games just come in too
many sizes. They also weigh a ton ... and now that my game collection is
somewhere over the 1,000 mark; if I got a thousand of these at $1.50 a
pop, I'm out enough money that could have gotten several shrinked pink
frisbees (eek!) I can't afford that; I need to be reasonably economical.

Right now I think I'll just go for bookcases with glass cabinet doors
attached. These will reasonably protect the games from dust (not perfect
but should be close) and still make them readily accessible for playing
and looking. Plastic baggies, even if you go deluxe baggies, are
awkward-looking and not really a long-term solution.

Also, unlike many of you other folk, I also have to worry about anchoring
my bookcases to the wall, so I don't lose too much in case an earthquake
strikes :)

I did look around the 'net for storage solutions, and much of what
currently exists can't accommodate something as large as a common Ultima
VI box.

As for meeting, I'd be all up for that, except most of the people reading
this aren't in California, I'd wager, even if there are enough collectors
here to clean out any remotely reasonable source of goods (sigh).

Although this talk about genres is fascinating, I'm gonna start a new

I spent some time a few weeks ago talking to C.E. Forman on the phone. We
covered a multitude of topics, but the two that were the most interesting
are below. I'd like to get input on each of them. Please post to this
topic if anyone is interested in either.

 1. C.E. and I got into a long discussion on how we store our collections.
We agreed that plastic baggies were a 'short-term' solution, and tried to
think up another (better) way to preserve our software for the long haul.
We agreed on the idea that if we could find some sort of inexpensive, clear,
plastic box of the clamshell variety, that would be ideal. I searched the
net for anything that would match that description, but came up empty. We
thought that if we could have a custom box made to a software collector's
exacting specifications, we may be able to have a plastics manufacturer
actually create our 'software collector's box in a limited run! So, here
are the questions:

*If you were able to have plastic boxes made to preserve your software,
what would be the specifications?(size, ie: LxWxH)
*What type of box would they be?(clamshell, like an Ultima box, hinged, or
something else?)
*How much would you pay for each box?
*How many boxes would you buy in your first order?

If we can suss out some agreeable details, and enough people were
interested in buying in large numbers, we *MAY* be able to make this happen.
I'm assuming the more that were ordered, the cheaper they would be. I know
that if they were relatively cheap ($1.50 to $2.00 each), I would buy 200 of
these boxes immediately. Please let me know what you all think of this.

 2. C.E. and I also spoke of the possibility of a software collector's
'meet and greet' at an agreed upon event. We could get together to swap
stories, share a meal, and perhaps even bring along some of our prized
collectibles to show to each other! The Philly Classic in Philadelphia this
March, or Dragon*Con in Atlanta this August could be possible locations. I

Akalabeth, or our genuine Wing Commander Kilrathi head! If we could make
