When I attempted to search the site this afternoon, I got a message alleging that the sight was not secure, and I was precluded from getting in at all to download Window-eyes scripts. It is my sincere hope that this is not some thinly disguised effort on the part of VFO to tighten the screws on Window-eyes users. In case anyone has them and is willing to send them to me, I need scripts for Ed Sharp and also for the Duxbury braille translator. The Winamp scripts of which I speak are those written by Jeff Bishop, and they are just great. I know of course that the Jaws scripts are fine, but I prefer to continue using Window-eyes 9.5.4. JAWS and the web
I've seen several questions regarding how you use JAWS on the web. I just want to remind people of the Window-Eyes to JAWS tutorials that Raul developed. There are 8 of them and they can be found on the Migrate page at: http://www.gwmicro.com/window-eyes/migrate/ The last one is specifically on web browsing. Also, you may want to spend some time on the Surf's Up. If you practice here, you'll go a long way to understanding and learning the various options on the web. On the JAWS Headquarters, this page is found at: http://www.freedomscientific.com/Training/Surfs-Up/_Surfs_Up_Start_Here.htm Someone asked specifically how you manually turn on and off forms mode in Jaws. That is answered her but specifically that can be found at: http://www.freedomscientific.com/Training/Surfs-Up/Forms.htm Regards, Doug Geoffray VFO(tm) | Accessibility Software Manager, Enterprise Compliance 11800 31st Court North, St. Petersburg, FL 33716 T 727-299-6219 F 260-489-2608 dgeoff...@vfogroup.com www.vfogroup.com The information contained in this communication is confidential, may constitute inside information, and is intended only for the use of the addressee. RE: migrating situation
Orlando, I have to admit, you make this seem like a no-brainer. However, there are many issues at play that I don't believe you understand. For example, we currently license the Duxbury braille translator, we can't simply give that away. We license several synthesizers, again, we can't give them away. We have special coding to give us access to encrypted PDF documents. There is no way we can simply give that coding away as we have an agreement with Adobe. We also offer the ability to encrypt our Window-Eyes apps. Would it be fair to release the unlocking code for that and allow anyone to see the code of an encrypted script. These are the first to pop off my head, there are many other examples of this where we can't just plop the code on the counter and let whoever have at it. I'm just pointing out things aren't always as easy as you are portraying. Window-eyes' code is obviously already written. It is working impeccably on both my Windows 10 systems and I plan to rely on it for as long as possible. Its scripting capabilities are much more robust than any other screen reader; plus, sighted programmers used to VBScript, JSCript, Python, Pearl, C++ and a host of other COM automation languages could write Window-eyes scripts. But with the code locked up, Window-eyes will not be able to keep up with hardware and software hangers in Windows . International copyright law is useful here. Works are copyrighted in order to be distributed freely or sold for profit; the copyright makes sure that royalties go to the copyright holder. But when copyrights lapse and works are put in the public domain, they can be freely distributed and altered. In Window-eyes' case, since the product is more than currently viable, it can obviously still be used. But when it requires updates, release of the code would make that possible at no loss or inconvenience to Gwmicro's founders. Orlando, Just to be clear, Dan and I sold GW Micro to Ai Squared. It was a perfect match for Ai Squared and GW Micro because they didn't have a full screen reader and we didn't have screen enlargement. The merger worked very well. Dan and I had no say in the merger of Ai Squared and VFO Group (for or against). Just wanted to make sure that was clear. You seemed to imply otherwise. Whether you used AT or MCI, back in the day, you didn't have to learn an entirely new conceptual layout just to get long distance service. If Dan and Doug simply wanted to retire from the accessibility market, they could have sold the company to an enterprising software developer with an interest in the blind accessibility market. Instead, the code now belongs to VFO, locked away from future development. That doesn't seem sensible, and I can't imagine how much VFO could have offered GWMicro to take its code off the market. Hello John and others, I've just been informed that if you are in the U.K. or Australia you may submit your request to migrate to JAWS in the same manner as those in the U.S. Meaning simply go to: http://www.gwmicro.com/window-eyes/migrate/ Read about your options and click on the migrate form or simply go directly there with the following: http://www.gwmicro.com/Window-Eyes/migrateform/ Be as detailed as you can about your situation and submit the form. RE: Window-Eyes to JAWS Migration
Matthew, I wanted to formally address this question. You can install JAWS on as many computers as you need. We give you 3 keys but will reset and are very understanding to this sort of thing. As long as you are not reformatting your computers, you should not be losing keys. As for the work question with a network, we routinely do this also for people that need to set up a license server with 1 or 2 keys for their use only. We don't advertise this but something we make available with cost, upon request. Regards, Doug -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+dgeoffray=vfogroup@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Matthew Chao via Talk Sent: Monday, May 15, 2017 11:57 AM To: Joseph Norton via TalkSubject: Re: Window-Eyes to JAWS Migration My question is: On how many computers can we install JAWS? The reason I ask is that I use three computers - a virtual machine on a MacBook Pro, my desktop, and a new laptop. Under Window-Eyes, as long as we adhered to their licensing requirements, we could have as many installs as we needed. With the new JAWS, that may not be the case. In that instance, I have issues about migrating. Worse, still, if a computer crashes, and we've gone through our allotted installs, I will not pay for another brand-new copy. This kind of "too bad, so sad" response has the prospect of generating customer bad will. Another example of the licensing issue appeared when I was working for the state. I needed to have eight PC's on a network running Window-Eyes. As long as I didn't run them all with WE at the same time, I only needed one copy. With an install limitation via JAWS, the state would have had to pay out more money, a disincentive for hiring us. David, Tandem is a feature that lets one JAWS users remotely assist another JAWS users. Window-Eyes had a similar feature. I'm not sure why they broke up the installers with and without Tandem other than to bring the installer size down and less to run. RE: Window-eyes commands using Jaws
Brenda, Unfortunately there is not a Window-Eyes keyboard layout in JAWS. To help people migrate from Window-Eyes to JAWS, there are 8 tutorials that you can listen to that talk about changes you may notice. These tutorials are designed for Window-Eyes users switching to JAWS. Is there a Window-eyes keyboard in Jaws? Are there any tutorials specifically on how to do things I did in Window-eyes using Jaws? I have done some of the on-board Jaws tutorials, but I am having trouble figuring out how do to what I used to do with W-e. for example - using the mouse cursor. Using Jaws I can't seem to move the mouse cursor around the screen. In w-E there was CNTRL-SHIFT-B to change where the mouse could go from full screen to focused window to active window. I don't know how to do that in Jaws OR if it would make the mouse cursor read more. I'm asking here instead of a Jaws list as I'm hoping some dual users who understand Window-eyes will be able to help me. Darrel, times change, and I doubt Doug and Dan and Aaron would have merged with AI Squared if they didn't think it would be a good move with the screen reader market as it is. I doubt they knew AI squared would merge with VFO. Nonetheless, this is where we are at, and at least VFO is letting us migrate to a usuable screen reader that will be developed. and List...Window-eyes is still the best screen reader for some programs. We understand how important a screen reader is to you and are offering JAWS(r) for Windows 18 as a replacement. We are committed to providing a smooth transition and will honor existing Window-Eyes product purchases and software maintenance agreements (SMA), as follows. . End users that paid for and are current with Window-Eyes 9.x will be converted to JAWS 18 at no charge. . If you are using an earlier version of Window-Eyes, you can purchase an upgrade to JAWS 18. . If you are using the free version of Window-Eyes you can continue to use it. While there is not an upgrade path from the free version, if you are interested in purchasing JAWS, please contact our sales team at 800-444-4443. . Existing Window-Eyes SMAs will be rolled into the JAWS SMA program for end users that migrate to JAWS. Learn more about the migration options and pricing by visiting http://www.gwmicro.com/window-eyes/migrate. To make this process as easy as possible, we ask you to complete a simple web form that will go directly to our sales team, who will then contact you with an authorization code for JAWS 18, or request additional information if necessary. Requests for upgrades must be submitted at http://www.gwmicro.com/window-eyes/migrateform or by phone at 800-444-4443 by July 31, 2017. iTunes accessibility
Hello everyone, Apple has asked me to post the list of accessibility fixes they put into iTunes version 12.5.4. The current version of iTunes is 12.5.5. Each release they typically fix a few accessibility issues. The list of fixes to the 12.5.4 release are: iTunes 12.5.1 for Windows Fault with column browser can't interact with each speakers when selected no longer reads out the name of Airplay speakers not reading selections from syncing panes skips Lyrics text area in Up Next and Get Info Unable to add multiple airplay speakers Unable to install apps from iTunes > iOS device with iTunes 12.5.1 for Windows Video listed as static box when played in iTunes Window Get Info hangs when does not read out star rating control does not read volume slider (or any slider) changes Unable to navigate to check/plus button in Airplay popup calls out the "+" as "button" instead of "Add to Library button" after selecting CMA calls out "Season" section in TV Shows as "Unknown" found two hidden items in the LCD labeled as "unknown" should announce "Pause 'album title' button" when selected album is playing skips over Artist / Album info in LargeArtwork MP does not read out the label of the movie ratings (G, PG-13, etc) or the movie quality (HD) I realize this list is cryptic but this does show they are working at it. If you have Window-Eyes or JAWS issues with iTunes, Apple has asked that you write up a very detailed description of the problem and email it to: mailto:accessibil...@apple.com The more specific you are to your issues the more likely they will be resolved. Urgent Notification
January 16, 2017: Urgent Notification Forthcoming Startup Failures in ZoomText 10.1 and other Ai Squared Software Products Problem The digital certificate used to certify newer ZoomText and Window-Eyes software products has been compromised. As a result, our certificate will be revoked on or around January 26th, which will result in startup failures for the following Ai Squared products. Affected Ai Squared Software Products When attempting to start the following Ai Squared software products, the product will fail to launch and display a Windows error message: "A referral was returned from the server" * ZoomText Magnifier v10.1 Build numbers 10.10.8 through 10.11.6 * ZoomText Magnifier/Reader v10.1 Build numbers 10.10.8 through 10.11.6 * ZoomText Fusion v10.1 Build numbers 10.11.1 through 10.11.5 * ZoomText Keyboard v4 Build numbers 4.0.0 and 4.1.0 * Window-Eyes v9.5 Build numbers 9.5.1 and 9.5.3 When attempting to start the following Ai Squared software products, the product may launch even though the certificate has been revoked. Anti-virus utilities may detect the invalid certificate and block the software from running. * ZoomText ImageReader v1.2 Build numbers 1.2.16106 * ZoomText Voices (language packs) v1.0 Build numbers 1.0.1.4693 * Vocalizer Expressive v1.3 (for Windows Eyes) Build numbers 1.3.0.13329 Note: Inspection of the certificate will show that the certificate is invalid. Inspection and validation of certificates is a process performed by some organizations. Solution (software updates) For each of the affected products, software updates incorporating a new digital signature will be released and available for download prior to January 26th. We will send updated information as it becomes available. You can check https://www.aisquared.com/certificatefix for updated information. Software ProductUpdate version ZoomText Magnifier v10.1 10.11.7 ZoomText Magnifier/Reader v10.1 10.11.7 ZoomText Fusion v10.1 10.11.7 ZoomText Keyboard v4.1 4.1.1 Window-Eyes v9.59.5.4 ZoomText ImageReader 1.21.3.0 ZoomText Voices v1.01.0.2 Vocalizer Expressive v1.3 (for Windows Eyes)1.3 Warning When Disabling Security Options Various websites provide steps for disabling Windows security options with the expectation that unsigned software executables will start and run. Disabling these security options will not fix these problems for the ZoomText and Windows Eyes products and may compromise security and protection from malware. Ai Squared strongly recommends against disabling these security options. Conclusion We apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you, but assure you we are doing everything possible to rectify this matter as soon as possible. To minimize downtime, we encourage you to update your software as soon as possible. If you have questions or require assistance resolving this problem, contact the Ai Squared support team at (727) 803-8600 option 2 or mailto:supp...@aisquared.com. As some of you may have already noticed, we just released English Window-Eyes 9.5.4 this morning (January 18th). Other languages will soon follow. It is very important if you are using Window-Eyes 9.5.1 or 9.5.2 or 9.5.3 that you upgrade to 9.5.4 before the digital certificate described above is revoked. There are 3 changes from version 9.5.3 to 9.5.4: 1) Support has been added for the HumanWare BrailleNote Touch braille display. 2) An issue where multiple hooking errors would occur in the latest testing builds (insider build) of Windows 10 has been fixed. 3) An updated digital certificate has been used to sign all executables. (as per the description above) Again, it is critical you upgrade your copy of Window-Eyes 9.5.1 or 9.5.2 or 9.5.3 to 9.5.4 immediately. Once the certificate is revoke these copies of Window-Eyes will no longer launch leaving you without speech and/or braille. Dennis and all, I've been getting this question a lot lately. Here is how I've been and continue responding until I know more: We are still early in the merger between Ai Squared and VFO so it is a bit early to know how all this will ultimately play out. But please rest assured no matter what happens, we will make sure that Window-Eyes users will not be left behind. As we continue we will certainly make clear what our plans are moving forward and how this may or may not impact you. But again, we will not take your years of loyalty for granted. Re: two way contracted Braille input on Braille displays
Hello Roger, Wow, it has been a long time. I was not aware of your health issues but applaud you for telling those doctors/statisticians what they can do with their odds (smile)! Window-Eyes core never allowed for contracted braille input. This is something that could be added to the individual braille drivers and I thought there was a braille manufacturer which actually took advantage of that in their Window-Eyes braille driver but I'm not certain. Because most braille drivers are developed by the braille manufacturer, I lose track of what displays are out there and how they work with Window-Eyes. I've wanted to add contracted input into Window-Eyes core but have never gotten to it. It is still on the wish list. Just wanted to correct a few things (smile). Malcolm created Screen-Talk which later became Screen-Talk Pro (linked with ProKey). VFO acquisition of Ai Squared
Hello everyone, I wanted to chime in here and give my personal thoughts to the bombshell released today regarding VFO (the parent company of Freedom Scientific and Optelec) acquiring Ai Squared. And by bombshell, I don't mean a bad thing, I just mean it is shocking and unexpected news. I know this may seem scary to many people. I know that we have a great number of extremely loyal customers who may be feeling betrayed. There are lots of legit concerns and questions that I'm sure come to everyone's minds. But honestly, nobody knows the answers at this point. We are just starting the discussions internally of how best to take all our new resources, talent, products, etc. and meld them together to give the best customer experience. For the next 6 months or so, it will be business as usual. After the 6 months, who knows at this point but I can guarantee the customers will benefit from the results. Nobody will be abandoned or taken advantage of, etc. I'm very impressed with John Blake (CEO of VFO). I truly believe John is in this for the customer. Personally, I'm extremely excited with the possibilities. Think about it, we now have all the best minds in this industry under one roof. Instead of us duplicating resources, we can combine them and inovate. Although Freedom has been our number one competitor since Dan and I started GW Micro in 1990, I've always had great respect for their engineers. Okay, I've had questions about their corporate leadership, a certain lawsuit comes to mind (smile), but that was a completely different leadership team. That was a different owner and a different CEO. Vector has an outstanding reputation. John Blake has shown great leadership and concern for the customer. Under this new leadership and available resources, I'm ready to take that and do whatever it takes to have the best possible solutions for our customers, for every low vision and blind person out there. People may be concerned about lack of competition causing innovation and quality to suffer. Nothing can be further from the truth. There is still plenty of competition out there, including free options but we have the determination and drive, starting at the corporate level all they way down to provide the best quality products, hands down. Yes, this will take some time to prove but I'm hoping that everyone out there will give us that opportunity. Again, I'm putting everything I have into this venture and I wouldn't do that if I didn't believe in it. Re: Key Definitions for Cursor Keys Still Messed Up
Dave, As per my previous email where I said exactly what I set it to, you want to set it to "Character Before", not "Prior Character After" as you just stated you are doing. This means before handing the right arrow to the underlying application, first read the current Character. Then allow the right arrow to go through to actually move to the character to the right. Bottom line, this speaks the character you left, not the character you are moving to. So please change the right arrow to "Character Before" as I believe this will resolve your problem. I didn't verify but I do seem to remember that Prior character after isn't fully implemented with some applications. But that doesn't matter in your case as Character Before gives you the same thing but works. Re: Key Definitions for Cursor Keys Still Messed Up
Dave, I am also not having a problem. Setting the right arrow to "character before" causes it to speak the character left instead of the character going to. Also, I went back in and had no problem changing my right arrow back to "character after" which is our default. Meaning I did not have to reload the factory sets. So Dave, I didn't have to go back to 8, my 9.4 works fine (smile). Either I'm not understanding the problem, or steps are being left out or maybe you are not setting up the keys properly. Curtis, Could it be because you aren't looking in the correct place in Window-Eyes? On my Windows 10 there are 2 SAPI 5 voices which I do see under Window-Eyes when I select SAPI. Re: previous link
Brice, This is a function of the browser. No matter how you get to a page, Window-Eyes will start at the focused element. Most times when you hit enter on a link and then go back to the page with that link the browser will focus the link...sighted people want this as well. But, I've seen IE get into a state where it won't focus the previous link. Even without Window-Eyes I've seen this. I was never able to figure out what specific setting was causing IE to stop doing this...or maybe there was some sort of corruption. But I believe I fixed it by going to IE's Internet Options dialog, selecting the Advanced tab, tabbing to the Reset button and resetting all of IE's defaults. Once I did this and restarted IE, it started focusing the link when I went back...both with and without Window-Eyes. So I would give that a try. Re: installing Windows 10
Richard, As mentioned, there are a couple screens that come up that do not have Window-Eyes running. These couple screens will require you to run Narrator. But all other places the upgrade process will allow Window-Eyes to run and be used. Let me address each. 1) You get a new computer and it already has Windows 10 installed You must have the full Window-Eyes 9.2 installer. Windows 10 will block the installation of any version less than 9.2. 2) You manually install Windows 10 on a system Windows 10 is no different than any other operating system at this point. Window-Eyes itself can not be installed until Windows 10 itself is fully installed so you would need to use Windows Narrator to help you with the Windows 10 installation. Windows Narrator can be launched with Windows-Enter. 3) You are upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 You must have Window-Eyes 9.2 installed on your Windows 7 system before the Windows 10 upgrade will allow you to continue. I have not seen the final Windows 10 upgrade which will start being pushed out on Wednesday so I can't say specifically what will happen but on the internal builds I've been testing I've seen the following. I had Windows 9.2 installed and running on my Windows 7 system when I started the Windows 10 upgrade. Everything was working well and speaking perfectly. However, there are eventually two back to back screens which have Window-Eyes unloaded and require you to launch Narrator. After those two screens the upgrade will continue and Window-Eyes will eventually launch and be working under Windows 10. However, under Windows 7 only there is a problem with the Window-Eyes accessibility driver. The issue is Windows 7 requires a mirror driver which Window-Eyes has. But after the upgrade, Windows 10 does not support mirror drivers so it blocks them leaving Window-Eyes without the driver causing there to be no off screen model. In most cases you don't even need an off screen model but it is still important to resolve this. The easiest way to resolve this is to simply run your Window-Eyes 9.2 upgrade on itself under Windows 10. So after Window 10 has been installed just download your Window-Eyes 9.2 upgrade and run it. This will install the necessary accessibility driver causing you to have a full 9.2 working copy under Windows 10. 4) You are upgrading from Windows 8.x to Windows 10 You must have Window-eyes 9.2 installed on your Windows 8 system before the Windows 10 upgrade will allow you to continue. Like Windows 7 there are a couple screens that come up without Window-Eyes running so you will need Narrator. After that Window-Eyes will come up and your Windows 10 will be running perfectly with Window-Eyes 9.2. There is nothing extra you need to do. Windows 8 and Windows 10 both use an accessibility driver, not a mirror driver, so life is good after the upgrade. Regarding how Microsoft is going to upgrading a billion devices to Windows 10, there is an interesting blog post you may find interesting: http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/07/02/windows-10-preparing-to-upgrade-one-billion-devices/ Regards, Doug On 7/27/2015 10:44 AM, Don H via Talk wrote: When Windows 10 becomes available can it be installed without sighted help? Re: Window-eyes 9.2 under Windows 10 Insider Preview
Bob, Glad to hear you are enjoying the responsiveness. As for Edge, Microsoft just dropped the ball on this regarding accessibility. No screen reader supports Edge at this time. I have full confidence this will ultimately get resolved but until then, Internet Explorer or Firefox or Chrome can be used. Rob Sinclair (Microsoft's chief accessibility officer) put out the following blog you may find interesting: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/accessibility/archive/2015/07/03/windows-10-upgrade-considerations-for-screen-reader-and-magnifier-users.aspx Doug On 7/27/2015 10:59 AM, bob jutzi via Talk wrote: It's been a while since I've used Window-eyes and so far, I am beyond impressed. Re: installing Windows 10
Don, There are four scenarios when it comes to Windows 10 and Window-Eyes. Re: installing Windows 10
Kevin, Oh, there is no problem at all if you just stay with Windows 7. The upgrade always contains the mirror driver when being installed under Windows Vista and Windows 7 and the accessibility driver when being installed under Windows 8.x and Windows 10. It just figures out your environment and installs the correct one. The issue is only when you upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 because the driver itself never got switched from mirror to accessibility. But since all Window-Eyes upgrade installers have everything, this is why I suggested just running it after going to 10 as it will realize you are in 10 and install the accessibility driver. Doug On 7/27/2015 4:02 PM, Kevin Huber wrote: Hi Doug: Thanks for pointing out the problem with the mirror drivers in Windows 7. Nick, The URL you gave below appears to be in Russian. I'm not sure if it is Russian but it certainly is not English. Window-Eyes is sending the text to your English synthesizer but it doesn't know how to speak it so it simply ignores it. So I do not consider this a Window-Eyes issue. Re: keyboard interuptability turns itself off.
I'm not following how you believe this problem is related to a memory leak. My guess is you have some app which is temporarily turning off the keyboard voice for whatever reason and isn't always restoring it in all cases. If you can duplicate this somewhat on demand I suggest running with all apps off for a bit and see if the problem goes away.
