The primary thing that drew me to it in the store was the keyboard layout of having the 10-key number pad on the right, yet only being a 15 inch screen. What I did not realize until after I got it home and paid money for a tech to come help me set it up was two things. First, it does not have the application key, which I have learned to get around with the Shift F10 keystroke. The bigger problem was the whole thing we've talked about with now having to push the FN key in order to get the function keys to work the way I want. (I had not found someone who was comfortable going into the bios to help me see about changing this.) The biggest problem Is that this function key thing also applies to the Insert key, as it is right next to the F12 key. I've gotten pretty good at using the caps lock key instead, but this requires some real finger gymnastics to activate certain Window Eyes command. Aside from all this, there is also some we ird clicking thing that the keyboard occasionally does that is annoying. All this to say, it's not been a great experience and had I not invested in paying a tech to set up the computer for me, I probably would have quickly returned it to Costco for a refund or exchange. So, I'm in a situation now where I may be giving this laptop to my sighted husband and getting a new one, but I'm gun-shy about how not to repeat this problem in my laptop selection. I am not a heavy computer user at home, so did not want to spend much money, although I'm not looking for the cheapest netbook thing either. I mainly looked at Best Buy and Costco, because I wanted to get my hands on the keyboard and feel the layout. I like that Costco doubles the manufacturer's warranty and provides great, free help desk support for the computers purchased there. Any advice from those of you having purchased computers lately on how to navigate this keyboard dilemma, especially if buying one online? I'd really like to stay in the $500 range, if possible. Yes, I hear you loud and clear. Re: The Real Value of PDF and Adobe Reader?
Jo Taliaferro Hello, I did download Adobe acrobat DC it's on my machine and guess what came up when I had finished installing Adobe DC? Yes Microsoft edge and I do not want it there. How can I get rid of it? I to have you read but I have not used it much. I still think there's something wacky about my computer in windows 10. Yes, someone set it up for me and I'm not a happy camper… Thanks for the great information, Dave On Sep 9, 2016, at 1:25 PM, Davidwrote: May I just remind you all, that the all-accessible software QREAD, does read PDF Files. Often with better result than the Adobe software. Yes, I do have both on my machine, but has set QRead to be the standard software to open any PDF files. QRead is not freeware, but the price is affordable. Think it was something like 20 or 30 dollars. And since it lets me read certain documents that Adobe does not handle satisfyingly I feel the price is worth the money. As already stated, whether anything beneficial or not, PDF has become the industry standard of everything now aday. Consequently, we just have to deal with it. Unfortunately PDF has no real standard in setting up things, and could hold both written and scanned text, along with graphics, drawings, photos and logos. Not to mention all the troublesome layouts with multiple columns, text written around the pictures and so forth. And, the PDF can be made non-accessible. But other than that, except from all the drawbacks, I guess the format is good enough. hahahaha. Since we cannot get around the format, we have to get a way to bite it. And therefore a software like QRead is a good tool in your toolbox. Since it is a stand-alone program, it will not be messed up by strange new ideas from Adobe, long as they don't affect new documents. From what I remember, the upgrades of QRead are free of charge. You want to have a look at the program, search for it on the net, or come back and let's see if we can dig out the homepage for you. Re: Verbosity ...
Jo Taliaferro Hi, I'm having the same issue with verbosity and I don't think it has to do with tooltips. My total tips setting is turned to off but I hear the same Burbage on the desk top as it speaks and explains the icons. I have been back and forth over the same Territory at least five times trying to effect a change, but still can get nowhere. I'm beginning to wonder if we are even talking about the same issue. Am I not understanding correctly just what we are trying to accomplish, or are a whole different set of instructions in order for my particular situation ? RE: Virtual View 5.0: what's this garbage?
For what it's worth, I suggest going to http://www.gwmicro.com and app. Central to read more about Virtual View and OCR. I'm not sure I understand it either but there are indeed options in the Help section when you find the app in the app management section of the WE control panel. I have a feeling there will be a webinar to assist with all of this so I hope WE staff can answer your questions better than I have. Jo Taliaferro -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+soaringeagle7=comcast@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of via Talk Sent: Friday, November 06, 2015 9:53 AM To: 'Window-Eyes Discussion List' Subject: Virtual View 5.0: what's this garbage? I have a pdf called Tension_Chart.pdf, which is basically a document that tells the amount of stress each of, I think, the D-Addario strings puts on a guitar at standard tuning. First, I tried opening the pdf in Adobe Acrobat DC and pressing Control-Alt-V, then selecting focused window and OCR. Virtual View processed something, and, all I got for my trouble was the title bar and menu bar. So I closed VV and re-opened it, this time selecting active window. Again, VV displayed only the title bar and menu bar. Finally, I closed Adobe and pressed Alt-Print Screen, then selected the Tension_Chart.pdf. Here is what I ended up with. Object reference not set to an instance of an object. pdfbox-1.8.9 at org.apache.pdfbox.util.JPEGUtil.updateMetadata(IIOMetadata , Int32 ) at org.apache.pdfbox.util.ImageIOUtil.writeImage(BufferedImage image, String formatName, OutputStream output, Int32 dpi, Single quality) at org.apache.pdfbox.util.ImageIOUtil.writeImage(BufferedImage image, String formatName, OutputStream output, Int32 dpi) at org.apache.pdfbox.util.ImageIOUtil.writeImage(BufferedImage image, String formatName, OutputStream output) at org.apache.pdfbox.pdmodel.graphics.xobject.PDJpeg.write2OutputStream(OutputS tream out) at VirtualViewHelper.OCR.PerformOCR(Object source) Void updateMetadata(javax.imageio.metadata.IIOMetadata, Int32) e.InnerException? False I had read in another email that TIF must be enabled in Windows programs and features as well. So I did that. If that's true, shouldn't that be mentioned somewhere in the VV installation notes? BTW. I opened the WE control panel and browsed the File> Factory Settings dialog to see if there was any additional information about Virtual View. Virtual View is not even listed there. I'm using Win 7 64-bit and WE 9.1. I agree with the sentiment of the other list member who asserted that the information for Virtual View is just too techie. For example, the require UAC check box. I guess that means require User Account Control, but why is that important to have as an option? Those 4 method radio buttons. For one thing, what is method? I remember that script writers have three characters of objects to consider: properties, methods, and something else I can't recall. In the case of these radio buttons, does method mean mode? If so, can that group of radio buttons be re-labeled to mode? As for the radio buttons themselves. Option 1: clips. What is that and how is it used? UIA. I'm assuming User Interface something. What does that stand for and how is it used? The bottom most radio buttn: Version. What is that and how is it used? I don't mind a bit of trial and error, but I become discouraged when two of my trials produce the exact same results. On a related note. Why, after several versions of Window-Eyes and Adobe, is a WE user still unable to access the text of a pdf with the mouse? The page up and down are to the left and right of the up arrow, making that look like a six pack, and the rest of the sixpack are in a row along the top. I'm getting that obnoxious noise that sounds like a loud doorbell when reading email or when doing alt-tab. Wait until the next release fix; let others have the headaches with the new system. The release of a new Windows is a massive undertaking, and it is impossible to find and fix all problems before a major release. Users will try the strangest things - which would never occur to developers. So, if you depend on your computer for work or school, don't muck with it! Personally, I have an old spare computer on which I put a new Windows release and play for a while and get use to its new ways of doing things, most often better ways, sometime not. For instance, as mentioned on this list, Microsoft forgot to build Accessibility into the new browser Edge; but, wait a while, and that will get fixed. The developers of Windows at Microsoft have regular meetings at which they discuss which bugs and oversights to fix; that list can contain thousands of problems. Fortunately, Microsoft has observed the Pareto Principle at work: 20 percent of the bugs cause 80 percent of the problems, so they are addressed first. BTW: Pareto's law applies in many situations: 20 percent of the workers at a company do 80 percent of the work. 20 percent of mathematicians discover/invent 80 percent of new mathematics. Help with Firefox 39, please?
I have tried without success to make Firefox my default browser by following the instructions/choices in the options menu. I also hear a message that says, Firefox is not your default browser, would you like to make it the default? I am confused because pressing Enter doesn't work nor does pressing the spacebar, or the alt-d shortcut key. I have Firefox Enhanced installed and use WE 9.2. Using Windows7 64-bitToshiba Ultrabook. Re: windows 10 upgrade
Hi, I went into the system tray by entering on the get windows 10 button and it kept telling me that it wasn't ready and there was a link that said Okay notify me when ready. I don't know what that means but I have a feeling that there are a lot of people wanting windows 10 so it is not ready to be downloaded automatically yet. This is just my guess. RE: windows update.
Yup, I have had that problem and tried again yesterday to do a Windows update and WE just stopped talking so I don't know whether the update worked or not. Sometimes I start the update as recommended by Microsoft even though I have my computer set to give me critical updates automatically so if the update doesn't work, I just re-boot and re-check my settings as the update may have downloaded automatically. I'm not sure why this message pops up and wants me to update (I'm talking critical updates here) but it does. Firefox driving me crazy!
Hi, I am using a Windows 7 64-bit laptop, latest version of WE and latest version of Firefox. I use Google to search. I can't figure out what the Firefox defaults should be so when I do a search for a website or just search for something online, Firefox seems to get scrambled and I hear, C 2 C 16by 16 or, Search with Amazon. I don't know whether the menu bar should be checked or unchecked or whether I need to be using the regular google.com or the accessible google with WE. I'm not sure what, if any add-ons would make things easier but if I get to the top of a web page, I run into the address bar which I'd rather not hear all the time. Can someone help me set this thing back to its defaults or suggest which version of FF won't drive me nuts! Thanks. Question about computers with WE
I think the AISquared team works closely with certain entities of Microsoft in making WE better and better but I have a question. I know there is access to Microsoft support and some technical assistance. How does the access to this Microsoft assistance carry over to the computers Microsoft builds and sells? RE: tutorial for window eyes 9
I thought it was on the Cd that we got with WE9. Perhaps you didn't get that?? And there's a webinar coming up that should be of help. I believe that's happening on Thursday Feb. 26 at 2 PM eastern time. It is recorded and put up on the website if you can't attend. Otherwise, all the new things that were announced should be on the website in mp3 files. But then, I don't know where you are in your knowledge of the program so why not just use the WE manual which I'm sure you got when you got WE 9? Hope this helps some. RE: I want to get rid of old deleted emails,
Hi, First, Jo is a female! I understand you wouldn't know this by just hearing the name! Thanks for all comments. I know where the deleted items folder is in my inbox folders and that gets emptied when I exit the program. I thought that deleted items went somewhere else and were not really permanently deleted from my computer. That's what I'm looking for just so I can free up more space. I use a solid state drive so I dare not do a defrag. I found nothing in options to help, either. Using Outlook 2010 with WE 9.0 Regards and thank you!
