Why create another Window-Eyes group when Window-Eyes is dead, as said by
Doug. Don't folks have anything better to do with their time?

It would make far more sense to study up on NVAD, Narrator for Windows 10,
or VoiceOver for the Mac and iPhone and give their developers useful
feedback.

Subject: gun shy about new laptop

Late last summer I got a new HP laptop. The primary thing that drew me to it
in the store was the keyboard layout of having the 10-key number pad on the
right, yet only being a 15 inch screen. What I did not realize until after I
got it home and paid money for a tech to come help me set it up was two things.
First, it does not have the application key, which I have learned to get
around with the Shift F10 keystroke. The bigger problem was the whole thing
we've talked about with now having to push the FN key in order to get the
function keys to work the way I want. (I had not found someone who was
comfortable going into the bios to help me see about changing this.) The
biggest problem Is that this function key thing also applies to the Insert key,
as it is right next to the F12 key. I've gotten pretty good at using the caps
lock key instead, but this requires some real finger gymnastics to activate
certain Window Eyes command. Aside from all this, there is also some we
ird clicking thing that the keyboard occasionally does that is annoying. All
this to say, it's not been a great experience and had I not invested in paying
a tech to set up the computer for me, I probably would have quickly returned it
to Costco for a refund or exchange.

So, I'm in a situation now where I may be giving this laptop to my sighted
husband and getting a new one, but I'm gun-shy about how not to repeat this
problem in my laptop selection. I am not a heavy computer user at home, so did
not want to spend much money, although I'm not looking for the cheapest netbook
thing either. I mainly looked at Best Buy and Costco, because I wanted to get
my hands on the keyboard and feel the layout. I like that Costco doubles the
manufacturer's warranty and provides great, free help desk support for the
computers purchased there.

Any advice from those of you having purchased computers lately on how to
navigate this keyboard dilemma, especially if buying one online? I'd really
like to stay in the $500 range, if possible.

Staying with what I know

Hello all, I have been with window eyes for a very long time. I may be in the

definitely like what my iPhone does but I believe I'm in a safer zone sticking
with windows and whatever the update brings when I get it. I think getting
office 365 might be a good strategy for me. Yes I own window eyes but… I want
to stay in from your territory now. I don't like some of what has gone on in

stick with it and see what happens for now! Good luck to everybody.

OK folks, I've been wanting to ask this for a long time. Not having ever
attempted to use a tablet, iPhone or any other touch screen device, I
realize just how stupid this question might sound, but bear with me, OK?

I just want to know how a blind user like myself avoids becoming a hunt
and pecker when trying to type on a touch screen. There obviously can't
be anything like home keys, or a easily recognizable home base for the
fingers, so short of having to buy and use a bluetooth keyboard, how do
you guys who make use of these screens do it?

Please be nice .

want it there. How can I get rid of it? I to have you read but I have not used
it much. I still think there's something wacky about my computer in windows 10.
Yes, someone set it up for me and I'm not a happy camper… Thanks for the great
information, Dave

QRead is not freeware, but the price is affordable. Think it was
something like 20 or 30 dollars. And since it lets me read certain
documents that Adobe does not handle satisfyingly I feel the price is
worth the money.

As already stated, whether anything beneficial or not, PDF has become
the industry standard of everything now aday. Consequently, we just have
to deal with it. Unfortunately PDF has no real standard in setting up
things, and could hold both written and scanned text, along with
graphics, drawings, photos and logos. Not to mention all the troublesome
layouts with multiple columns, text written around the pictures and so
forth. And, the PDF can be made non-accessible. But other than that,
except from all the drawbacks, I guess the format is good enough. hahahaha.

Since we cannot get around the format, we have to get a way to bite it.
And therefore a software like QRead is a good tool in your toolbox.
Since it is a stand-alone program, it will not be messed up by strange
new ideas from Adobe, long as they don't affect new documents. From what
I remember, the upgrades of QRead are free of charge.

You want to have a look at the program, search for it on the net, or
come back and let's see if we can dig out the homepage for you.

All just to remind you, there does exist alternatives to the main-stream.

I have been back and forth over the same Territory at least five times trying
to effect a change, but still can get nowhere.

I'm beginning to wonder if we are even talking about the same issue. Am I not
understanding correctly just what we are trying to accomplish, or are a whole
different set of instructions in order for my particular situation ?

Actually, I don't fined this to be much of a bother, because all of this info

extra verbiage, it would certainly help a bit.

function key combined with the control and shift keys. When I have to do a
lot of typing, I use an external keyboard. When I bought the computer, I
didn't even thhink to ask whether these keys were present; I just assumed.
Silly me!

Hope this helps,

did not come through. Spyware is web root which Best Buy installed for me.
It might be blocking The installation of other software. I can tell it's

RE: Persistent Windows 10 offer

The same thing happens here. I just do an alt-f4 and it shuts up for a
while. I am going to call Microsoft and ask them to do a clean install
because when mine upgrades by itself, it really really seems corrupted. I
think I'm going to go to Windows 10 sooner or later so maybe I just need to
upgrade and be done with it. I am not sure how to tell you to remove the

I have started getting a message to upgrade to Windows 10, which I do not
intend to do. There's nothing in it to say "don't ask me anymore." Even
after closing it, it pops up again and again. It also seems to make the
computer unrsponsive when the Win 10 message is open.

Any suggestions as to how to get rid of this annoyance?

Thanks!

Hi Marc,
I think you could put topics 4 and 5 together to make a great webinar. I
haven't used Windows apps so I'd like to know what they are and what I
could use them for to enhance my computer efficiency.
I'm not sure I understood Ninenet and I'd love to know more about its
capabilities.

Why not, every so often, do just a Q and A with no real agenda except that
the questions must be restricted to a certain operating system or program.

RE: Virtual View 5.0: what's this garbage?

For what it's worth, I suggest going to http://www.gwmicro.com and app.
Central to read more about Virtual View and OCR. I'm not sure I understand
it either but there are indeed options in the Help section when you find the
app in the app management section of the WE control panel. I have a feeling
there will be a webinar to assist with all of this so I hope WE staff can
answer your questions better than I have.

Subject: Virtual View 5.0: what's this garbage?

I have a pdf called Tension_Chart.pdf, which is basically a document that
tells the amount of stress each of, I think, the D-Addario strings puts on a
guitar at standard tuning. First, I tried opening the pdf in Adobe Acrobat
DC and pressing Control-Alt-V, then selecting focused window and OCR.
Virtual View processed something, and, all I got for my trouble was the
title bar and menu bar. So I closed VV and re-opened it, this time selecting
active window. Again, VV displayed only the title bar and menu bar. Finally,
I closed Adobe and pressed Alt-Print Screen, then selected the
Tension_Chart.pdf. Here is what I ended up with.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

I had read in another email that TIF must be enabled in Windows programs and
features as well. So I did that. If that's true, shouldn't that be mentioned
somewhere in the VV installation notes? BTW. I opened the WE control panel
and browsed the File> Factory Settings dialog to see if there was any
additional information about Virtual View. Virtual View is not even listed
there.

I'm using Win 7 64-bit and WE 9.1.

I agree with the sentiment of the other list member who asserted that the
information for Virtual View is just too techie. For example, the require
UAC check box. I guess that means require User Account Control, but why is
that important to have as an option? Those 4 method radio buttons. For one
thing, what is method? I remember that script writers have three characters
of objects to consider: properties, methods, and something else I can't
recall. In the case of these radio buttons, does method mean mode? If so,
can that group of radio buttons be re-labeled to mode?

As for the radio buttons themselves. Option 1: clips. What is that and how
is it used? UIA. I'm assuming User Interface something. What does that stand
for and how is it used? The bottom most radio buttn: Version. What is that
and how is it used?

I don't mind a bit of trial and error, but I become discouraged when two of
my trials produce the exact same results.

On a related note. Why, after several versions of Window-Eyes and Adobe, is
a WE user still unable to access the text of a pdf with the mouse?

It isn't a problem, it is how reading PDF files in Adobe Reader has always
worked.
If you want the visual page to coincide with what you are hearing, you need to
switch to read only visible pages and use control-page up and control-page down.
In Adobe Reader; Control-k for preferences, Press R in the tree until you get
to reading. Tab 3 times and use your arrow keys to make the selection.

When you are reading the entire document and you press page up and down you are
moving the browse mode pointer 24 lines in the browse mode buffer.

No visual synchronizing is taking place.

RE: WE 9.2 and IE 11

2015-08-26 Thread Jo Taliaferro via Talk
Well, I'm not having problems with WE 9.2 and IE 11 latest updates so I find
myself wondering what I'm doing right! I have everything set to the
defaults in IE 11 and use Windows 7 64-bit machine. Maybe we should go from
what's right instead of what's wrong! I'm not denying problems others are
having, just puzzled. I'm not bragging, either, just finding very few times
when IE says it's not working.

that is the issue, again and again, when a program has stopped working,
Window-eyes also stops working when the computer is still working!
THAT is the issue, though IE or any other program stops, Window-eyes has to
be hearty enough or however or whatever it takes in resources, to make us
competitive with other screen observers that say X, program has stopped
working . . . Then, we can properly interact.
Issues with that program stealing focus away have to be dealt with as well
since if we are writing a message, or a book, or . . . and X program
crashes, the issues where Window-eyes becomes unable to talk are like we're
going blind again without any access at all.

If you call their Tech Support, they won't say that 9.1 or 9.2 has

story they can not say over the phone. After all, management might
be listening, and heaven forbid someone tell the truth about a product.

Although, I am still wondering what the differences are between
those systems that are said to run 9.2 without a stitch of problems,
and the systems those of us who can barely get a session on the Web
finished without speech dropping out, or the system freezing up.

I asked this question to those who had those systems that were
having no issues, but did not get a single reply. So I'll ask my
question to those of us who are having major issues with 9.X.

To those who are finding 9.2, or 9.1 locking up, or Speech Dropping
out, or requiring a restart of WE, or a hard Re Boot, does your
computer have a Dedicated Sound card in the system?

Meaning, the Sound chips you are using, are on a Card that is
plugged into the Mother Board, rather than are built into the Mother
board from the Mother board manufacturer.

This system I use, has no dedecated Sound card, but is using the
built in Graphics as well as the built in Sound features that were
  part of the Mother board.

How about the rest of you, if you can write an Email without having
  the system freeze.

I used to, when I wrote tutorials on Windows for the blind, recommend to my

The release of a new Windows is a massive undertaking, and it is impossible
to find and fix all problems before a major release. Users will try the
strangest things - which would never occur to developers.

So, if you depend on your computer for work or school, don't muck with it!

Personally, I have an old spare computer on which I put a new Windows
release and play for a while and get use to its new ways of doing things,
most often better ways, sometime not.

For instance, as mentioned on this list, Microsoft forgot to build
Accessibility into the new browser Edge; but, wait a while, and that will
get fixed.

The developers of Windows at Microsoft have regular meetings at which they
discuss which bugs and oversights to fix; that list can contain thousands of
problems. Fortunately, Microsoft has observed the Pareto Principle at work:
20 percent of the bugs cause 80 percent of the problems, so they are
addressed first.

BTW: Pareto's law applies in many situations: 20 percent of the workers at a
company do 80 percent of the work. 20 percent of mathematicians
discover/invent 80 percent of new mathematics.

Good luck, Peter Duran

I could not resolve this on my own with my level of knowledge, but my tech

keys the standard windows function keys. If I use the FN, I could get the
results for the other function options. I do suggest you get a list of what

I wasn’t sure how to word the subjectline. I have asked this question before
and not gotten an answer, so I hope somebody can help me. People talk about
getting computers and having the function keys do different things. One person
said the function keys act right away, so that when you go to use our commands
with them, they do other things. I think it was said that you have to either
use a function key with the function keys on a laptop, or you have to go into
the registry or the bios and change it so that the keys do what we want.
Rather than have to do that, what question should I ask when buying the laptop
so that I get one with function keys that act properly? I need to know, since
I am going shopping for a replacement. Thanks. Pam.

Firefox driving me crazy!

2015-07-11 Thread Jo Taliaferro via Talk
Hi,
I am using a Windows 7 64-bit laptop, latest version of WE and latest
version of Firefox. I use Google to search. I can't figure out what the
Firefox defaults should be so when I do a search for a website or just
search for something online, Firefox seems to get scrambled and I hear, C 2
C 16by 16 or, Search with Amazon. I don't know whether the menu bar should
be checked or unchecked or whether I need to be using the regular google.com
or the accessible google with WE. I'm not sure what, if any add-ons would
make things easier but if I get to the top of a web page, I run into the
address bar which I'd rather not hear all the time. Can someone help me set
this thing back to its defaults or suggest which version of FF won't drive
me nuts! Thanks.

I suggest that when we have webinars, Marc could tell us not only the voice
he's using but also the version of firefox.

Question about computers with WE

2015-06-05 Thread Jo Taliaferro via Talk
I think the AISquared team works closely with certain entities of Microsoft
in making WE better and better but I have a question. I know there is
access to Microsoft support and some technical assistance. How does the
access to this Microsoft assistance carry over to the computers Microsoft
builds and sells?

My understanding is that there's no trialware that comes with a Microsoft
computer but are their computers, (especially laptops, accessible for a
blind user without an external keyboard or braille display?

I use Windows 7 64-bit ultrabook with latest WE and appreciate feedback,
off list, if preferred.

Outlook 2010 help??

I'm using a Windows 7 64-bit laptop with ie 11 and latest Firefox. I have

chime goes off and I'd just like to be able to control when I'm nagged about

Thank you! I'll remind you same time tomorrow if I hear nothing!

I am a bit confused. This is not about appointments I have put on my

I get it on all special days: Easter, Administrative Professionals Day,

This is also true if you hve an iOS device and create reminders on it. If
your reminders are saved to iCloud and you have iCloud interfaced with

Jo, we need some more details to know exactly what reminder chime in Outlook
you are referring to. Here are a few that come to mind.
1. If you have created appointments in your Outlook calendar with reminders,
Outlook will emit a chime and display the Reminder dialog with a list of all
reminders each time you open Outlook until you dismiss them.
2. Outlook plays a chime when new emails are received and displayed in your
Inbox 3. The Window-Eyes Outlook Enhance app is designed to play certain
tones when an email is opened that has text presented in the message's
information bar.
If you can let us know which of these chimes you are referring to, we will
be in a better position to assist you.
Regards,
Marc

Hello,
I'm using the latest version of Firefox on a Windows 7 64-bit Toshiba
Ultrabook and latest WE version. I also have Adobe flash player 17 or
something similar. I've done google searches before, like maybe 2 weeks
ago, and I've found music I wanted that I could play. Now, for example, when
I search for: Vivaldi: Gloria there is a long pause and the message I
finally receive says, Plug-in is not responding. Stop plug-in or
Continue. I get no info as to what the plug-in is and doing some research,
I can't seem to fix the problem. I did un-install and then re-install
Firefox, I checked and updated some of the WE factory settings and still the
problem exists. Yes, I did try with Internet Explorer and then I tried
going to youTube which really screwed up my system. I'm back to basic
settings now.
How do I fix this?

been talking about investing in a new one.

This is our main computer in the house. We will want it to be a PC, since
we keep financial records on it and are not as comfortable with software for
doing that on the Mac. We've also got scanning software that runs on the PC

 Here are my questions:
 1. I think the answer to this is no, but I'll ask, can you still get an
Extended Keyboard laptop, with the numpad keys on it running Windows 7
64-bit? I was going to check at Best Buy but I thought I'd ask here first.
 2. Assuming the answer to question 1 is no, what are people's experiences
with Windows 8.1 654-bit? How hard is it to use with Window-Eyes, which is
our primary screen reader?
 3. Does Kurzweil 1000 run on 8.1, and if so, what version would we need?
 4. We use Money Talks to manage our checkbook and write checks. Is APH
even supporting it anymore, and does it run on 8.1? If it does not, what
accessible personal finance programs are people using which can also print
out checks?

I think that's all for now. Thanks in advance for any help.

defrag. I found nothing in options to help, either. Using Outlook 2010
with WE 9.0
Regards and thank you!

Hi Brendon,

I wonder if Joe is talking about the deleted items folder that resides
somewhere in his computer. Every now and then Windows Live Mail asks me if I
want to save on space and it makes a back up copy of the entire email
folder. I've yet to find out where these emails are sent. I have tried
searching for them but so far no luck.lol

I've checked in options but there is nothing there that relates to saving
emails and where they are saved.

Live long and prosper, John

Hi, I have old emails that really haven't been permanently deleted
from my ssd Windows 7 64-bit computer. There used to be a way to do
 this but I
don't remember it. I have searched online for help and I have performed
disk clean-ups each month. Perhaps some just drift away as I add to the
deleted pile but I'd like some feedback, please.
