I received an HTML/Text email in which there were a website address
(spelled out) and an email address.

In the HTML version, the website and the email were not highlighted
and not clickable. I had to switch to the plaintext version to click.

Any confirmations? If so, I'll open a bug report.

There are several exceptioon logs at

This de-duplication process will only remove duplicates in each individual folder.
It will NOT do cross folder de-duplication.

So let's say you have "the same email"  in 3 different folders, the current Remove Duplicates

The old taskbar botton lost its function, and I had to drag TB! from
the Desktop to the taskbar again. This has been going on for a few

What is new is that the new taskbar botton is blank, it has no icon.

I have a much better (for me) solution for the same problem (I call it
"still needs reply", but the same can be used for "for work later"):

I "flag" messages that still need to be replied. And I have a virtual
folder that shows all flagged messages. This way unread messages and
messages that still need to be replied to don't get mixed up, and I
have an easy count of flagged messages. If you use the flag for
another purpose, you can use a colour code, for example.

I have been using this method successfully for many years. It may be
low-tech compared to the Mail Ticker, but simplicity is often more
efficient.

Did you customise the toolbar before the upgrade, and it now reverted
to the default? Or did you never customise it, so it was the default
before upgrading?

I see. This means that the configuration I have now will persist. It
will not go back to factory default, right?

If so, I can safely download this msi to my work machine.

Is this confirmed by others? I am currently on my production machine
and cannot test betas, and this would be a show-stopper for me. I
cannot lose my toolbar customisations on the production machine.

I'd like to upgrade this machine because of the much better HTML
support.

You did not say which "older" thebat.exe solves the problem. Your message does not thread for some reason, so I cannot get back in the trhead. However, maybe this helps:

Options / Prefernces / Other Options / [X] Use Denser Display

@Stefan: You we have this ticked as default, along with [X] Display "old style" tree view? I have not heard anybody saying that they like the new styles. Thanks.

FWIW I was so annoyed with the previous implementation of HTML, that I
am now considering whether to change my work machine to this beta - I
would usually never run a beta version of any software on my work
machine.

The new HTML viewer still has some quirks, but I am sure we can work
this out before the next release. that's what the beta series is for.

Agreed. I really liked the botton we had that switched from internal
to external viewer. What it did in effect was switch between
downloading pictures or not. And I had the option of "whitelisting"
picture sources that I could trust.

I really miss this too. In some HTML mais, I want to see whether the
link sends me to the website it promises, or whether it will send me
to an URL that will potentially install malware on my computer. I
don't like to blindly click.

The way I work is, I highlight the first message in the message list,
and then work may way through the messages using either down-arrow or
crtl-.

This works fine if the messages are plaintext messages, but not any
more when the messages are HTML: messages. TB loses focus, the message
is greyed (not dark blue any more) in the message list, and my
keyboard shortcuts do nothing. I have to highlight the message again
in the message list with the mouse, and can then continue browsing.

Reproducable over here 100%. Any confirmations?

I vote for re-introducing the lines. I often do follow them up to get
top the OP (original post) of any thread, both on this list and in

I've done that now, but I don't feel comfortable with it. With spams,
I don't know (I actually don't have the technical knowledge) whether
pictures can container malware of any kind.

When travelling with my laptop in a country with slow internet, or

of elaborate company logos (which I have most likely downloaded
hundreds of times before).

I had set the viewer to the external viewer (the internal viewer just didn't
cut it), and now pictures were not being downloaded; the setting under Options

doenl;oad manually, so I have set it to "Automatically (not recommended)" now.

Title: Re: TB! Re-Downloads Emails already downloaded (was: 8.8.9.5)

Hello Stefan,

Here is one of my pet peeves. It just happened again. Log says:

 08-Jun-20, 21:10:55: FETCH - 4772 messages in the mailbox, 47 new

Indeed, only 1 message was new, the others were re-downloaded. This is not the first mailcheck since I started TB.

Bug has already been confirmed: https://bt.ritlabs.com/view.php?id=1779

Highly annoying, especially when I am in a country with slow internet (such as Myanmar), and TB wants to re-download thousands of mails (sometimes all that are on the server).

So you're indicating that if I set that for never download more than 2 weeks, that at no time will more than 2 weeks of mail be downloaded even if the program somehow decides to download everything?

I think it can be done, but I have not tried it. You can add a filter that looks at "Age greater than 14 days", and select one of the three possible actions.

But, as I have said, I have not tried it.

I see. I'll try that next time as work-around.

This just happened:

 30-Jul-19, 20:49:17: FETCH - 4264 messages in the mailbox, 6 new

These were not new mails, they are from 2 weeks ago. Only these 6 were re-downloaded.

And this is my other computer, a PC which is always connected to the internet via my home wifi. The other problems reported were with my laptop, and I travel a lot, so I thought that changing ISPs might be a contributor.

Bug report #1779 is still untouched by Ritlabs.

Dear Thomas,

I'm having the issue on a laptop with permanent ISP, so that's not the reason (at least for me).

Best regards,

problem.

Right, but I don't think top-posting causes the problem here. I only
brought this up because it means that the whole email thread in HTML
is in the message, which likely multiplies my problem.

But since your problem is caused by something else, I seem to have
kidnapped your thread. I will open another thread for the HTML
problem.

That is correct. Greetings from Bangkok.

I can't see any relation to the issue reported in #1217.

I just used another angle that you, the user's view instead of the developer's.

But from what you wrote there, I guess that your problem with delays creating a reply is the bad habit to copy the full correspondence with each single message which has ever been sent in this thread, unabridged with all the images etc.

I consider this a very unpolite habit. Imagine you are sitting together in a conference, and each person, after delivering her or his contribution, repeats all those contributions which the others have made before, including all the grammatical errors and eh and ahm and what have you.

It does not matter what you think, you have an IT view and I am in the service industry. We have to quote the whole email thread and add our reply at the top. If someone starts to cut something out, you will immediately be accused of trying to hide something: "Why did you cut my instruction of 2 February?". Difference industries have different norms. You'll just have to believe me.

One should only copy what is needed to understand which part of the received message one is replying to.

Then you will have no delays before you can start writing.

I know it wouldn't cause a delay if I worked your way. However, the software is there to support the work and not the other way around. Besides, TB is the only MUA I know with this problem.

Coming back to your remark that this problem is not related to your bug, let's discuss this when the bug is fixed. I think the problem I am describing is a result of the bug.

Creating a HTML message is certainly slower than plain text. Especially with TheBat! not using proper quotes, but the Procrustean bed of creating nested HTML TABLEs (shudder — one of the reasons why I do not recomment TheBat to others).

I don't know enough about HTML to confirm about these nested tables, but it doesn't sound right and may well be the reason for the editor slowing down. It uses too much CPU time and RAM when the mails get longer.

It also makes sense that it gets better again when I reply with the plaintext editor once - the tables get deleted.

I can confirm this for many versions, and it happens often. I do not
use GPG.

It happens to me when replying to large HTML mails. Large in the sense
of many replies. Convos can be back and forth for weeks, that's
nothing unusual. But it isn't the Reply-To header: When it takes too
long to open the editor, I just choose Plaintext in the editor, and
the replies (or the openig of the editor, rather) on the next messages
are fast again.

Many business partners have set their Outlook so that the replies are
always in HTML (they want to show their logo and corporate identity in
their emails), so after a while, the replies slow down again.

My normal setting is to reply to HTML mails in HTML (to not offend my
business partners by cutting out their corporate identity in all its
glory). I do believe that there is something in the HTML code that
caused the TB HTML editor to choke but I have not reported it because
I cannot put my finger on it. Does not happen will all business
partners' emails.

(As a remark with regards to another thread: I cannot ask the business
partners to change their settings. It also won't help to point out
that this problem means nothing because Outlook is only one of many
email clients.)

Excuse me, if HSBC sends you an email, stating that a Nigerian prince
wants to send you millions of dollars, do you believe it? If so, you
do need to be protected from sender spoofing. Most people don't, and
most people use email clients that display the QP-encoded headers
correctly. And guess what, I even get emails from spoofed senders that
are not QP-encoded. Now what? Not displaying any From addresses any more?

It may not matter in your world, because you are not doing business
with China (biggest country in the world by population, second biggest
by size of economy), but a great percentage of the world population
(current or potential customers of Ritlabs) does.

Still just one mailserver. But ... could it be that the culprit is not the SMTP-Server but the mail program of your correspondent? Is there a "X-mailer" header in the mail?

  Why don't you contact them?
qq.com is actually made by Tencent: http://www.tencent.com/en-us/index.html

Yes, and Tencent is one of the biggest tech companies in the world. They will certainly listen to me when I tell them that they need to change their RFC-headers.

I just went through a month-long discussion with GMX, the biggest email provider in Europe, about one of their settings. The end was that they finally understood that there is something wrong with their settings, and that they will relay it to their tech department (of course I could only talk to customer service). I am a paying customer there.

GMX are most likely a microscopic company compared to Tencent. I don't have any comparison figures for QQ Mail, but would not be surprised if they could swallow GMX many times over in terms of number of users. And I am not a paying customer at QQ Mail, I am not even a user. I am jsut a recipient of emails from a small number of their millions and millions of users, and the recipients of emails sent by  QQ Mail who have problems with the header they send is microscopic, proabably below detection level. I just don't believe that they will follow my suggestions, even if I they tell them they are just only one mailserver and they have to adapt. They won't, and that is a fact we'll have to work with.

Some powers are more powerful than RFCs.

The sender's MUA is the webmailer at qq.com, one of the biggest email
providers in China. I would think that TB should accommodate their
flaw, as other receiving MUAs do.

The problem is that I am communicating with my customer in China, and
this is really really bad style. As mentioned, other business partners
he communicatesd with do not reply to him as 'Dear

So I wanted to enbable it weih this new .msi, and I found two choices

I consider it an error (bug), because TB does something the user does
clearly not intend. If he wanted the original version to be sent, he
wouldn't have opened it again in th editor.

Maybe IMAP handles this differently, I don't have a clock symbol.

Maybe it only happens when sending automatically. By the way, do you
use IMAP or POP?

Over here it is 10 minutes. Please try opening the mail again and
re-read, maybe edit, when the time hits and TB sends messages. It will
send this message, even though you have re-opened it and are editing
it.

> This function works as expected and I do not have any trouble with it.

It used to work correctly, naemly that it won't be sent while being
edited. I do haev trouble with a message being sent, while I
re-opened it.

Just as a question: You have delayed delivery so that you can re-read
it, right? What if you then notice that you want to change something?
Do you still want the unchanged message to be sent?
