You can hide it if you want. It is very useful for me.

Though I question the usefulness of the connection center at all then. The
transactions happen so fast there is no possibility to see anything and there
is no reason to not just limit the connection center view to the last event or
set of events or the last 1000 lines or something like that. There is no reason
the clear that log and every reason not to. I didn't know clicking on the
status bar would bring that up. I've probably only cared about that log a
couple of time in the many years I've been using The Bat, rarely enough I would
never remember a secret button like that.

So as soon as I finished sending this message I clicked on the status bar and
it brought up an empty log. As I spend most of my time looking at virtual
mailboxes, I don't usually see a status bar with any information and at some
level was not even aware it existed.

Just on a hope, set it to Always.

Also, in Account/Properties/Options check Invoke Mail Dispatcher
in Mail Management.

Just something to try. If these options already are selected, change,
and then change back. Then re-launch TB!, to try to get its attention?

Just a thought. Maybe only something to do, like boiling water when

Yeah, my CC looked exactly the same until this morning. Well, I cannot tell
if I pressed a key or clicked with the mouse by accident. It usually does

I cannot catch and drag this part of the window. The only things I can do
is clicking on the four buttons on the bottom and resizing the window.

The mouse does not change its cursor and noting happens when clicking
somewhere below the white surface.

Hm...

Press the "details" button.
It's a bit difficult to understand what you mean with "usual", but
that's the difference with my CC.

Thanks, Bill. And thank, Mary. And thanks "tomtpe" (if you are here).
It seems that this issue is gaining some momentum, and maybe there is
a chance now that Ritlabs will stop ignoring the issue. Maybe there is
a chance that Ritlabs will even take a little time to fix the problem
- possibly even before that long-imagined and perhaps imaginary day
when they finally will get IMAP to work right.

Confirmed in all respects, including Ian's observation about focus not
being handed over to TB is you bring up the CC from the task bar under
these conditions.

Bill, why not add this observation in Bugtraq under the bug that I
have already reported at https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4612

Ritlabs introduced this problematic behavior of the CC in the 3.5
series, but after one month of complaints - ever since RC5 - RL still
has not even acknowledged that an issue exists. No one from RL has
ever even had the courtesy to respond on the subject, which I find
rather disheartening as a fairly long-time member of this tbbeta
forum.

Yes - for quite a while, too. Might be nice to have these things time
out eventually. I really don't what the Connection Center on the Task
Bar and for it to hide (auto) but my IMAP account always is in the
queue, so it stays visible. Maybe I just don't know how to set this
up, but I don't think I have control over it.

Most of the times, when a pop3-tasks hanged, I could close CC, but I

Trying to close The Bat! (Alt-F4), I get the warning "Some tasks are

Abort. (Although no tasks are shown in connection centre!)

Did you experience this behaviour?

MS> Similar observations?

Perhaps somehow related to my (still persisting) problem with
anti-virus-plugins (<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>) and Mary
Bull's observation of AVs with MailDispatcher
(<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>).

My impression is, that the "task-accounting" sometimes "looses" some
of the tasks it has started. It seems, that it does not always keep
track of all the things happening in the background, like an
antivirus-plugin needing some time for scanning a mail or a lot of
connections opening and closing in very short time.

I deactivated the antivirus-plugin that "solved" the problem for me.
However, I remember a situation similar to yours. But this only
occured once, so I cannot confirm this for now.

BTW: Are you able to close TheBat! after you had to "Abort all tasks"?
This was a problem for me with activated antivir-plugin.

Or maybe it opens in the background - like the way it now does when
you select an account from the dropdown menu on the toolbar?

Either way though, my opinion is it's a bug. I have reported it to
this mailing list since RC5 and placed it on bugtraq. I would
appreciate it if someone could confirm the problem. I am almost
getting desperate enough to do a top-post or leave out my

I have this all the time, especially with SSL connections. I can't
remember that it was otherwise, in any of last versions. It seems I've
gotten used to it, I kill The Bat all the time and restart it :(

This is one of The Bat's great weaknesses: the connection centre which
is impossible to quit out of when it thinks it's "busy". End Task,
here I come. :)

IMHO there should also be an option for timeouts on both incoming and
outgoing mail servers, as ANY other mail client has. That would at
least solve the problem that it never gets any new mail for hours on
end. But really the hanging problem should be fixed.

Yes, I'd say so indeed. It never came to my mind to try maximising, as I

Ah, of course. I think you got it pinned down. It's so simple.

Of how much use would a "disconnect" checkbox be for a LAN connection?
Or a "connection" tab? So the options you see depend on what TB! thinks
is useful for you (better: what you told TB! what was useful for you :).

Took a little searching to find this one. I am on a cable

no tick box in CC. I reset my network options to dial-up

Hello, Thomas F!

Surely, we should. Nevertheless, I would recommend to install a good
antivirus program (I prefer Kaspersky antivirus, www.avp.ru, but it's
a matter of taste and belief ;) to get warned about trojans on the
computer (and to update the antivirus definitions on a daily basis).
And a good firewall to not let the trojans (which weren't detected by
antivirus) to send any information from your computer. The two
firewalls that can do this job reliably (that is they really check
what program sends what), are ZoneAlarm (a very simple to setup, but
not as powerful as Tiny Personal Firewall) and Tiny Personal Firewall
(www.tinysoftware.com). I would recommend the latter - it has a very
powerful filter rules system, is evolving quite fast. The latest
version is 2.0 build _14_. If still not available on the official
download page, find there a link to the TinyFirewall YahooGroup, and
download from there.

TF> Check out the DDOS attack on http://grc.com (do take a look) -

This site is a good source for info on firewalls, too. ;)

Thanks, I am: I managed to dislocate the wallpaper (which is a
catastrophe, as it is my roommates fav) and found it again . I
disabled the Win98 splash screen at reboot, and did some other little
changes. I almost lost all some icon associations to file extensions,
but luckily TweakUI has a "repair" button.

It's great fun! And it's unusually good (and small) for that software
house. I even like it that they name one of the tabs "Paranoia". ;-)

Anyway, Beep On Errors is on. Let's wait for an error: TB needs to
send the signal that an error has occurred.

Thanks. I'm sure it is on the CD. I also have a big book about

Allie, this is far too complicated and not necessary. When I invoke
the ConCen manually, I obviously want to watch it (better than Str
Trek, actually).

OTOH When I'm composing an email and the ConCen starts automatically,
I obviously want to continue typing my mail - but I want to know the
ConCen is active, so a status bar showing that it is there, is enough.
I can click on it if I want to. I'm not asking for anything fancy.

This morning, I had set the Center to "Hide" (following last night's
postings of some gentle readers), thinking I don't need the
disruption. Suddenly the modem began freaking out, especially the TXD
and RXD LED's, and I was close to panic and pulling the plug when I
remembered what I had done. OK, Options / Preference / Show: and there
it was, checking as it was supposed to.

Excurse into cyber security: Unless you are really sure that you
cannot have trojans on your machine, you should watch the LED's. Check
out the DDOS attack on http://grc.com (do take a look) - hundreds and
thousands of people have these IRQ-bot style trojans unkowingly on
their computers and enable the cyber terrorists to shut down any site
at will. Do you want to be part of this? Also, a special kind of
trojans are the keyloggers. Do you want to broadcast your passwords to
these people? Even if you have a firewall and run AV and anti-trojan
software: like with viruses, you can be "hit" with a new trojan at any
time. Why think you are immune?

I switched back to show "Automatically". While typing this particular
message, the ConCen came up three times.

Yes, I did that. It's great if you know that all your accounts check
well. It's more inconvenient when you need to take a brief look at
waht is gong on.

> An idea that came into my mind upon seeing this is like that: the CC would

Absolutely. This is what I would like to see, too. Good idea.

> Additionally, it would REMAIN open (even if all its tasks were
> already finished/killed) if there was an error in any of them.

For me, the log does fine. Some accounts have problems checking every
second time. That's normal, I don't need the ConCen to stay open each
time there is a problem. I look up in the log whether I have been able
to connect at least once in the past hour, and if not, I go hunting
for the problem. There also used to be an acoustic "dong" whenever
there was an error. It was good.

At any time I want to know when the ConCen is open, and I need to take
a quick glance every now and then. If it stays open too long, I look
at the error.

A checkbox for "[ ] remain open upon error" instead of default
behaviour is my suggestion to complement yours.

Those of you on this list who don't have trouble connecting to their
ISP and downloading mails, will not understand it. Despite my cable
modem, my POP servers are located on three continents, and 90% of this
traffic goes through one single undersea cable conecting Asia with
N.America. In additon to that, sometimes my modem starts flashing like
a discotheque, and since a have I security-unaware roommate ("if I
don't say Yes when IE asks me whether to allow ActiveX, I cannot see
the website") which has led to trojans, viruses and all kinds of
trouble on my machine (good; this way I learn a lot of stuff about
internet security), so I cannot just ignore the LED's. If I know it's
the ConCen, everything is fine. Maybe mine is a special situation, but
shouldn't software stand up to more than the easy situation?

I would also like a little word (like "fixed") from anybody at Ritlabs
about the timeout as reported earlier.

Yeah that seems logical to me. That's about the behaviour I would like

An idea that came into my mind upon seeing this is like that: the CC would
get "on top" with manual checking of mail, but stay "on bottom" with
periodical checks. Additionally, it would REMAIN open (even if all its
tasks were already finished/killed) if there was an error in any of them.
This would, then, be a good place to add a behaviour so that an "errored"
account would NOT disappear from the CC, but instead remain there to be
inspected.

Precisely:

1. If it's a manual check
-> get the CC on top
-> otherwise leave it in the background
2. Download mail, as usual
3. For all accounts that have completed successfully
-> remove them from the list
