Within the folder press +* to expand all threads that may stil be
collapsed.
After this press +A to select all messages.
Now use menu "Tools" / "Export Messages" / "UNIX Mailbox"
Select in the upcoming dialog where to save the mbox-file, confirm it and
you're done :-)
To verify the export is done you can use a text editor like notepad ... but be
aware: notepad is not able to handle the unix newlines correctly:
it simply does not show them :-)
So it might be all you see is a hugh one-liner :-)
If you have a *nix at hand you can test if export worked with e.g. 'mutt' ...
everytime I did it it worked like a charm :-)

If you've further questions: ask, I think this is one of very some fields I'm
able to help as *nix is my job *ggg*

Hey Dierk,

My point was, and I think is still valid for others on this list,
that The Bat! shouldn't be assessed on the weight of its BETA
releases. I was in no way having a dig at Becky, I was merely
pointing out that I see testing Beta software almost as a privilege
that an individual can either take or leave, bug slagging The Bat!
based on its beta code is unfair.

Hey Alexander,

How on earth can you base your decision to dump The Bat! on the
quality and stability of it's BETAs??? Beta releases are announced
as buggy and usually come with a disclaimer stating that they are
far from perfect. If you are not prepared to put up with buggy software
that is still in development, then don't use beta software.

That The Bat! is a dog based on its betas is a lame point of view to
take. Go back to the stable release.

See you back here when you figure out that Becky is not all that The
Bat! is. I have tried many email clients, but nothing has ever
  topped The Bat!

They don't even need to include a full scheduler, just a command line
parameter which could automate and activate the backup feature. Then
you could use the Windows Task Scheduler or some such program.

There is an alternate option. In the days before TB had an internal
backup mechanism, I had written a series of batch files to backup all
settings and messages. Tony Boom polished them very nicely into very
usable scripts. If you're interested, it might be possible to
convince him to repost his versions. You can see a good thread on
this issue in the TBBETA archives (I hope) from July 26-27.
The subject was: "Backup and Restore of mail folders -- messages"

Ditto for DrWeb. It's SpIDer Guard let's me know

virus it has and asks me what I want to do about it (i.e. lock the

Feature Request: Printer set-up..

2001-08-30 Thread Foster, Graham

To simplify the zillions of places you can now alter fonts and colours, I
thought it would be a good idea to add a button to set your printer output
settings for font sizes colours etc to be the same as your on screen viewer
options... have them "tied" together even. At the moment, there isn't as
much functionality in the printed version of the messages as you can get on
screen, and its a pain to keep duplicating all the settings

Just a thought

JR> Hello Shauna,

I'm using EZ Trust Firewall. It comes in a package with their
anti-virus program (which used to be InnoculateIT PE). I'm more or
less happy with it - it seems to do the job, but I find it less
user-friendly than ZoneAlarm. The thing I like least about it is that
it blocks everything, incoming and outgoing, by IP address only. So if
I want to put a selective block on outgoing traffic, I have to do
things like specifically allow access to every web site I visit, which
quickly becomes a real pain. So I mainly go with the default settings,
which allow all outgoing traffic and only specified incoming traffic
(and I don't have any specified). The other thing I don't like is that
trying to use MAPI to call up TB results in at least 2 warning
messages every time - I haven't figured out a way to disable that (it
seems to be the "DeskShield" component that gives the warnings, and
there's no configuration options that I can find). Still, as I say, it
seems to do the job and it's less annoying than ZoneAlarm was, so
it'll do until I have time to look for something better.

No, thankfully. That is the wonderful thing about TB editor, it does
not change or reformat anything after you hit send. What you see is
what you get.

Your solution is:

you don't need to highlight anything in order to re-format long lines.
Just switch the Auto-format on by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+F, and then
insert a space anywhere inside the long line and again delete that
space using the backspace key. The long line will instantly be
re-formated to the proper line length.

The same thing works for quoted long or straggling lines! This sort of
auto-format (automatic re-flowing of quoted text from previous emails)
is a magnificent feature of The Bat, something that *instantly* made
me abandon Outlook and choose The Bat.

A RELATED WISH: Please, RITlabs, let the Status Bar in TB editor show
us whether AutoFormat is currently switched on or off.

Hello Timothy,

Something may have become corrupt (duh...). I can think of two things
you might try...

1) Go into the "Programs" panel of ZA/ZAP, remove TB! from it
(right-click on the TB! section, and remove), re-start your computer,
and see if ZA asks for new "permissions" for TB! when you try to check
or send mail again.

Or...

2) There is a file called "IAMDB.RDB". This, if I'm remembering
correctly, holds the "Programs" configurations for ZA/ZAP. If you
delete this file, then re-start, ZA/ZAP will start over with a fresh
file (you'll need to re-grant all your program permissions).

[If you want to be careful, perhaps just rename or copy that file to
somewhere else before you delete it, and re-start. See if ZA creates a
new file and starts over with a "clean slate" of program permissions.]

I have WinME, so this file is in my "C:\Windows\Internet Logs".
According to the ZAP FAQ, for "refreshing" ZA's settings:

"For Windows NT and Windows 2000, remove the files in \WINNT\Internet
Logs."

I remember removing the IAMDB.RDB file once, re-starting, and all
seemed well after that. I just had to re-grant all my program
permissions.

To make sure of all this before you try anything, for a quick answer,
you may want to ask about this in either this Usenet news group:

comp.security.firewalls

Or, in the news.grc.com news group:

grc.security.software

Good luck!

but not least, it doesn't interfere with TB!. :-)

Your experience is identical to mine. I now use either Tiny Personal

hi andrew!

i had this problem too, my solution was to add the mail server to the
trusted zone servers. somewhere in the configuration zonealarm lets
you define some trusted addresses. i don't use zonealarm anymore so i
couldn't tell you the correct procedure.

ZoneAlarm & TheBat

2001-08-30 Thread Timothy J. Luoma

ZoneAlarm does not want to let TheBat access the Internet, especially for *sending*
email, even though it is listed in the list of Programs in ZoneAlarm that are allowed
Internet access.

Is anyone else having this problem?

I am using the newest versions under Win2k.

Thanks

Do you get a message that access is blocked or does it just not go
through? I used ZoneAlarm Pro and Win2k on my laptop for a while - I
found that it worked most of the time, but occasionally, for no
apparent reason, I would be unable to access e-mail. Shutting down
ZoneAlarm and restarting it always fixed the problem, but it got too
annoying and I finally switched firewalls. However, I had no problems
at all using various (free) versions of ZoneAlarm on this computer,
running WinNT4, so it seems to be strictly a Win2k issue (I've also
heard of other people having problems of various kinds with ZoneAlarm
and Win2k).

Export messages

2001-08-30 Thread Susanne

Hi,

I'm trying to export some messages from TB in Unix mailbox
format, but I get stuck right away, after choosing this
under Tools.

The helpfile just confused me (I'm not an advanced computer
user ) and was wondering, if someone can give some simple
instruction on how to do this (for a whole folder).

Re[2]: replies to me in lists

2001-08-30 Thread andrew

Hello David,

To re-open this thread... (thanks to TBUDL) I now have my smtp
access sorted so that I can send mail from my domains :))

And I think someone said in this thread that if I had my own domain
mail I could achieve a filter to flag replies to me not just in TBUDL
but also on yahoo groups etc.

So I'm wondering if someone could explain how :)

I'm assuming that this will be achieved either by filtering the
'In-Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>' field which was
like this and I'm homing will now be 'In-Reply-To:
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>' But if this is what I need
to filter on how do I write the filter to look for 'In-Reply-To:
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.

I've also considered working the filter on the 'to:' field but i don't
think this will work as some lists don't personalise it and the filter
would then conflict with my personal mail.

help :))

Bye Bye The Bat.... Say Hi to Becky!

2001-08-30 Thread Alexander Turcic

I have been a faithful TB user for over a year. However, the last betas
were more than disappointing. Bugs over bugs. And the essential missing
features were still not fixed or implemented (did someone say true IMAP4
support?). Another major complain of mine is the increase in memory
usage. TB also feels more and more like a slow old animal, that needs
its time to browse through my folders with hundreds of mails.

Now... has anyone tried Becky! V2.x?! I did, and I must say, that this
is a wonderful little gem. It does everything TB should do (excluding
the TB macro features, which I virtually never use)...and it does it
without screaming or bugging or crashing my PC. Just have a look at its
filter technique, and you will feel really tired of using TB's filters
again.

Anyways, I say bye to this newsgroup for I am not any longer a TB user.

If you set The Bat! to save attachments in a 'Separate in a Special

TB! V1.54 Beta/7 - auto launching anti-virus program

2001-08-30 Thread Jan Rifkinson

Hello TBUDListers.

I noticed the following feature listed on the Poco Mail
   website:

Support for virus protection E-mail can be used to spread
viruses disguised as file attachments. PocoMail can launch
your virus scanner automatically on any attachment
received, or you can specify only certain file types that
 would initiate your virus scanner.

Can TB! do this? And, if so, how?

Currently I save all attachments, open my anti-virus program

OK ... another possibility ...
Knowing that it seems I'm a lucky one, bounces returned to me contain the
reason for bouncing _inline_ within the message :-)
Maybe it's only because most the time I get bounces they're returned by our

Yes.

Their "Exchange" configuration uses a Micro$oft proprietary format for
attachment encoding. You have to ask the sender to modify the settings
for your address in their configuration.

There is an ancient utility called Fentun which can decode these. See
http://www.fentun.com/.

What I actually meant is that you may need *different* smtp to
relay to depending the route you actually enter the Net. "Relay"
is the right term and "highest level smpt" is not. Thank you.

It would be a good addition to be able to select text and then 'reply

these points:

TJL> If I paste a really long line into a Compose window, it doesn't

There is a new "Paste formatted" command (Shift-Ctrl-Ins) to handle
this since often you want to paste and retain the unformatted (aka
pre-formatted) nature of what you are pasting.

TJL> So I highlight the line and do control-shift-F to reformat it.

TJL> But it doesn't.

It wouldn't. Alt-L will (or Alt-J for justified reformat).
Ctrl-Shift-F toggles auto-format on and off on-the-fly. If it is on,
the simple typing a space at the end of the last pasted line will
reflow the text.

TJL> What's the solution to reformat an overly long line -- or will
TJL> theBat do it when I hit send?

It is one of the **huge** plusses of TB that the text formatting does
*not* change after you hit the send button (unless some other software
changes it on the way out).

TB is WYSIWYG. Settle on your final format before you hit send and
that's how it should look when it arrives with the recipient. There
are very few email clients that can do that.

Perhaps this has already been mentioned -- maybe it's already in there and I
haven't seen it -- but I would LOVE a backup scheduler.

If it's too difficult to allow a customized schedule, perhaps you can do it
the way Intuit does with Quicken. They nag you every few
application-restarts.

Now, I presume that some folks would think their financial data much more
important and in much more need of backup than e-mails. Perhaps a preference
can be set up for those who don't want to be nagged by TheBat! backup?

Just a thought or two.

Try saving this '.att' files and have a look into them with a plain text
viewer: most the time it's Trash :-)
Some internal things Outlook send with the mail, like .. lets say this person
has to use Outlook (like me too :-( ) for job management ... I get the request
to do a job via Outlook. for Outlook being able to handle it properly with all
it's attributes (Final Date, Level of Emergency, Further Information in this
Job, what person(s) is responsible, etc.) Outlook needs to send more than a
plain text mail, therefore it attaches all 'handled only by Outlook'
information into the '.att' ...
Don't ask me for the _exact_ schema when /under what circumstances Outlook
sends this information in a 'normal' e-mail too but most the time is does not
send out this stuff if it is set to 'send plain text mail' and not 'RichText'
or 'HTML' ...
IIRC one can also set in address book 'per person' to send Plain Text (or was
that only 'Netscape Mail'???) ...
I can't test at the moment as my Outlook is only configured for Exchange-Mail
what is purely internal and every external mail (100% e-mail; not
Exchange-Stuff; short: not "proprietary information exchange" messages *G*) is
handled by TB! for me ...

I must admit, I'm a threading idiot... but I do know that neither
"References" nor "Subject" produces acceptable results --
although "Subject" seems to be the lesser of the two evils. I
know there has been much discussion about this, but I have never
had sufficient time to really dig into it myself.

I can see your point, but more often than not, I am glad it
doesn't automatically save everything in one shot. Many times I
have used the save all attachments, and then cancelled the save
for "message.htm" and/or other "junk" attachments.

As nearly every mail contains 'empty lines' between message text and signature

disturb your writings :-)

FYI: TB! decides what to insert as '%QUOTES' by searching for '-- '

The problem may be the fact, that there are actually several blank
lines in the original mail, that's where the "three enters" come from.
For example, when replying to your e-mail, i had several blank lines
to delete as well.

For freeware, there's Mercury from the makers of Pegasus. I have used

You can also look at the various freeware and shareware sites on the

I don't know that this is relevant. The "level" of SMTP is usually
about incoming SMTP mail, which will *not* apply to you because you're
only looking to run your own outbound SMTP service.

sorry, yes i should have said that they do provide smtp if i dial-up

this isn't a viable option. So I needed to fin another way.

  Serge et al,

I've made only a test-run using WINE on Mandy8...didn't work out,
but it's probably a problem with how I have it configured (WINE, that
is).

Thinking about it now, Allie is probably correct in her assumption
that TB! wouldn't fly high in Linuxland if it was pay-to-play. If
they ever considered going GPL with the license (for Linux), it'd be a different
story altogether though. However, I don't think that's something the
folks at TB! could afford (outside of a hobby-project).

There's nothing more frustrating for a Linux user/advocate than a
Windows program that truly kicks ass :)

SMTP server - setting up

2001-08-30 Thread andrew

Hello tbudl,

Ok I'm a complete novice on this...

I have several domain names but unfortunately the hosting provider
doesn't provide me with smtp access to send mail under these domains.
ie. I don't have an smtp server from the host which will allow me to
send mail.

This has meant I've had to try and find a work around. The best I've
found is using gmx.net to get a free account and then using advanced
smtp authentication (user number and password) and having to set the
'from' address to [EMAIL PROTECTED] The problem here is that a) it's
not very neat and b) if I subscribe to a mailing list with the account
the list will want confirmation from the 'from' address rather than
the account (because I'm having to give the from address
[EMAIL PROTECTED] rather than [EMAIL PROTECTED]). Which means unless
their's a web page confirmation screen I can't confirm.

So the question is...

Can I set-up my own smpt server. Is this possible on my PC or do I do
this on my webspace? (novice as I say). If so on either can anyone
suggest simple software I should use?

If anyone else has a better solution to the above problem I'd be glad
to hear that too. (or an existing smtp server I can have access to :))

Thanks

Andrew

Yes. You have to redirect the messages from the second account to the
first instead of moving the messages. Be sure to enable allow local
delivery in Network and Administration.

Then when new messages for the second account arrive they will be
redirected to the first account, where they get filtered again.

Works fine now - Thanks

ps : Net connection down and hence the delay in ack. As long as I use single quote
the
same works in the Reg Ex too.

You can use Hamster
(http://home.t-online.de/home/juergen.haible/) to poll all mail
and then receive it to a single TB! dummy account. And all real
accounts are used for from: addresses. This is the way I do it.

combining two POPs

2001-08-30 Thread mrten-dop

hello,

is it possible to (temporary) combine two POP3 accounts into one
thebat! account? i've got two places to pick up mail from (i can't
forward one to the other, difficult provider problems), but i don't
want to bother with two thebat! accounts, since i'm used to use only
one.

what i've done now is create a second account and a filter which moves
the new messages to the other account there:

BeginFilter
Name: New rule
Active: 1
Source: \\mrten-dop\Inbox
Target: \\Mrten\Inbox
CopyFolder: \\\none
MainSet: 01fyhrtyetydrtydrtyndtry
Actions: faoContinueProcessing
[snipped some for brevity]
EndFilter

however, this leaves the messages unfiltered in the first inbox! is
there a way to activate the filters there besides clicking "refilter
messages" all the time?

tnx, Mrten.

I haven't tried it myself:( but buddies from Russian Mandrake
list (its all about altlinux.ru distros that grew from Mandrake)
say they are quite happy with TB! running under WINE.
