Help with TB data recovery (cont)
Hello again, Well a new dawn has brought no helpful revelations... Every time that I try to re-discover my files with ctrl-alt-shift-L, TB creates a complete replica of each of my account trees at the root level - but they are just regular folders (i.e. no account details in properties). Worse, they share the same directory on disk, so cannot be deleted/emptied without emptying the real ones. I've already tried deleting them (thus clearing out their mirror) and then importing my saved files, folder by folder, into their original places. Only to find that the next ctrl-alt-shift-L brings the problem back! This looks terminal. I'm crushed that I've reached such a wall here, with _no_ way to continue with my old data. Just for the record, I've created my folder structure below: --- folder layout as it should be - @ account1 - inbox - outbox - list folder - list1 - list2 - etc. - etc. @ account2 - inbox - outbox - client1 - list1 - etc. ... etc. root folder1 - dir1 - dir2 - etc. root folder2 - dir1 - dir2 - etc. --- folder layout that I'm getting - @ account1 - inbox - outbox - list folder - list1 - list2 - etc. - etc. @ account2 - inbox - outbox - client1 - list1 - etc. ... etc. account1 # these are the duplicates of the @accounts above - inbox # sharing the same disk file properties - outbox - list folder - list1 - list2 - etc. - etc. account2 - inbox - outbox - client1 - list1 - etc. ... etc. root folder1 - dir1 - dir2 - etc. root folder2 - dir1 - dir2 - etc. -- end --- Is there something fundamentally wrong with this layout? That is correct, because TB will look for deleted messages and then compress, i.e. zap (not zip) them from the database. If the message itself is not marked as deleted, nothing gets zapped. As a workaround, I moved the message (without the deleted attachments) to another folder, compressed the original folder, moved the message back, and then compressed the intermediary folder. To my surprise, however, the two folders showed an amount of compression that was substantially less than the size of the deleted attachments. Why? Folders and rearranging
Have you ever noticed that if you try to add a new folder to an account, the new folder is always added at the very bottom of the account tree? So, let's say you are trying to add some categories in which to stick the boxes. And you have maybe a hundred folders or more. So you are there hanging around at the top of the tree, so you'd like to place things in some better order. Or maybe later archiving, or whatever. So I should take this bunch of folders, and package them up in some new folder, shall we say, boxed tight. So that random parts don't just hang around aimlessly. Since you started at the top of the tree, now you need to get the parts at the top, and move everything half a dozen screens to the very bottom. I can say that I scratch my head at this point, see? Are there other options, or anything I have missed? This could really take a while, as is. Another thing is, say on the other hand you take a fresh new Account. It has automatically like 5 folders or something to start off with. Try create a new folder. Now, if you try to move the original bunch, Inbox, and so on, it seems to fail. When you drag one to the new folder, the pointer does not change form as you would expect. -- Best regards, Adam Current version is 2.02.3 CE | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Only for registered users of The Bat! version 1: during the Christmas Offer your upgrade discount is 30% in addition to 30% Christmas discount which yields 60% as a total discount /quote First, users were more-or-less being pushed to upgrade to 2.xx at 50% discount, being $17,50 per personal copy, as I did (and probably many more). Now, 1.xx users can upgrade to 2.xx for $35 - 60% = $14. Spam reporting
Hi all - I know this has been covered ad nauseam, but I can't find out what I want to know, so am asking again. I know there's a switch that will let me attach an email with full headers so I can send it, say, to an isp to let him know one of his members is generating spam. But I can't remember how to do it, and can't find the mail I saw it in a year or so ago ... if you tell me again, I promise to save it for ever and ever! Bayesit Training (download)
Hello The_Bat! Users, I have uploaded my entire Bayesit directory, so that anyone can download it and have the pleasure of using one of the finest spam filters anywhere. You will not have to train it with so many emails, like before, just download and install Bayesit from here: http://klirik.narod.ru/usefuls/bayesiteng.htm ...then download these files http://legacy.sheltonbbs.com/~jmmorse/Bayesit/ and then unzip them to your Application Data directory, it will overwrite your Bayesit folder. Or you can unzip them to a temp folder and then move them to the Documents and Settings/Application Data folder manually. (you should already have the Bayesit folder there since you installed Bayesit, just overwrite it) For example mine is found at: C:\Documents and Settings\John\Application Data\Bayesit After downloading all 6 files, then double-click the one named BayesIt.part01.exe When you unzip these files it will replace your Bayesit folder in your Application Data Directory. Here are a list of all the files (with file sizes) you will need to download: BayesIt.part01.exe (1.4m) BayesIt.part02.rar (1.4m) BayesIt.part03.rar (1.4m) BayesIt.part04.rar (1.4m) BayesIt.part05.rar (1.4m) BayesIt.part06.rar (583k) Don't worry about training Bayesit with a bunch of messages, just go through the motions, because this will replace all the training anyway. L I know there's a switch that will let me attach an email L with full headers so I can send it, say, to an isp to let L him know one of his members is generating spam. I should caution you that the From: header is almost never the person who is sending the spam. I often see this pattern in spam: From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] and so forth. For example, I received a spam with the From: line: From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] where they are clearly taking the first part of my address and adding that to @stockscenter.net since the spam was about buying stocks. The spam actually says Visit our web site @__ since they don't want you to use e-mail to communicate with them, since none of the e-mail addresses are theirs. Even the first Received from header's IP address can just be a relay point. Trying to report spammers doesn't work - they just move somewhere else. Spammers send spam because some people buy the stuff, and as long as that continues, so will they. Only two things work - the less effective one is using spam software to filter your mail and then delete the spam after scanning the titles/senders for real e-mails. The only effective one is changing your e-mail address, and then not using it on the web or in newsgroups. -- Cheers, Ken Using The Bat! v2.02.3 CE on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 1 Current version is 2.02.3 CE | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Nice gesture, but a bad idea IMO. The beauty of Bayesian filtering is that it learns from an individual's email. Other users may well get spam of a different nature than yours and, aside from TB! mailing lists, will almost certainly receive a different assortment of good mail. Here's an excerpt from an interesting article on Bayesian filtering: ,- [ http://www.paulgraham.com/spam.html ] | Ideally, of course, the probabilities should be calculated | individually for each user. On | my list I put words like Lisp and also my zipcode, so that | (otherwise rather spammy-sounding) receipts from online orders would | get through. I thought I was being very clever, but I found that the | Bayesian filter did the same thing for me, and moreover discovered of | a lot of words I hadn't thought of. `- I haven't used BayesIt, but the training period for POPFile was remarkably short. HTML not creating links
Hello, I received a monthly newsletter in HTML, with a link that is referenced by clicking on an image. Now, unlike many newbies, I don't expect The Bat! to show the image, but isn't it a bug if it doesn't make that area (with the red X) into a link, the same as a browser would do with the actual image? Here is an example (with web address changed): a href=http://www.blah.org/merchant/new.html;img src=http://blah.biz/merchant/moreinfo.gif; width=77 height=17 border=0/a If that same href were attached to a text, it would be clickable, so why not make the 77x17 box with the red X clickable ? [snip details] Actually I know most of that, but I just opened a new email account and the first mails I got were spams from yahoo addresses ... on the one hand it's pointless to report them, because as you say, they will simply have new addresses tomorrow, but on the other hand, if you don't report them, everybody thinks the spam problem has gone away. I'm also aware of the spoofing issue, and find that most of the ip's involved are not merely overseas, but also have no address to report to.
