Help with TB data recovery (cont)

2003-12-12 Thread Nick Dutton
Hello again,

Well a new dawn has brought no helpful revelations...

Every time that I try to re-discover my files with ctrl-alt-shift-L,
TB creates a complete replica of each of my account trees at the root
level - but they are just regular folders (i.e. no account details in
properties).

Worse, they share the same directory on disk, so cannot be
deleted/emptied without emptying the real ones.

I've already tried deleting them (thus clearing out their mirror) and
then importing my saved files, folder by folder, into their original
places. Only to find that the next ctrl-alt-shift-L brings the
problem back!

This looks terminal. I'm crushed that I've reached such a wall
here, with _no_ way to continue with my old data.

Just for the record, I've created my folder structure below:

--- folder layout as it should be -
@ account1
  - inbox
  - outbox
  - list folder
- list1
- list2
- etc.
  - etc.

@ account2
  - inbox
  - outbox
  - client1
- list1
  - etc.

... etc.

root folder1
  - dir1
  - dir2
  - etc.

root folder2
  - dir1
  - dir2
  - etc.

--- folder layout that I'm getting -
@ account1
  - inbox
  - outbox
  - list folder
- list1
- list2
- etc.
  - etc.

@ account2
  - inbox
  - outbox
  - client1
- list1
  - etc.

... etc.

account1 # these are the duplicates of the @accounts above
  - inbox # sharing the same disk file properties
  - outbox
  - list folder
- list1
- list2
- etc.
  - etc.

account2
  - inbox
  - outbox
  - client1
- list1
  - etc.

... etc.

root folder1
  - dir1
  - dir2
  - etc.

root folder2
  - dir1
  - dir2
  - etc.

-- end ---

Is there something fundamentally wrong with this layout? Otherwise
that's about it for me 'cos I can't see any way forward with TB.

nothing to compress because there were no deleted messages in the

That is correct, because TB will look for deleted messages and then
compress, i.e. zap (not zip) them from the database. If the message
itself is not marked as deleted, nothing gets zapped.

As a workaround, I moved the message (without the deleted attachments)
to another folder, compressed the original folder, moved the message
back, and then compressed the intermediary folder. To my surprise,
however, the two folders showed an amount of compression that was
substantially less than the size of the deleted attachments.

 Why?

I don't know the format in which TB stores the attachments. Maybe some
kind of compressed form?

You may want to try something that has worked for me in the past and
that I have just verified.

1.- Make a copy of your Mail directory, with all its Accounts
subdirectories, somewhere else.
2.- Uninstall The Bat! completely and delete any folders that may have
been left over after uninstalling.
3.- Install TB again from scratch.
4.- Copy your saved Mail directory over the just created one.
5.- Start creating _new_ accounts but with the names of your old ones
(the names of the subdirs in Mail directory), and you will see that TB
picks up and takes all the account information from the existing account
folder.

You are correct. But the result with view modes is not predictable,
the view mode settings are not respected or sometimes saved properly.

Here a some examples:
- selected columns are no longer selected or size down to 0
- column size wider then defined, yet they come back to the correct
size after going into the view mode editor and clicking on OK to exit,
without making changes.

And, if you select Use Folder Specific Settings and use Setup
Columns in the drop-down menu when right-clicking on the columns
headers, the columns settings do stay as predicted.

Folders and rearranging

2003-12-12 Thread Adam

Have you ever noticed that if you try to add a new folder to an
account, the new folder is always added at the very bottom of the
account tree? So, let's say you are trying to add some categories in
which to stick the boxes. And you have maybe a hundred folders or
more. So you are there hanging around at the top of the tree, so you'd
like to place things in some better order. Or maybe later archiving,
or whatever. So I should take this bunch of folders, and package them up
in some new folder, shall we say, boxed tight. So that random parts
don't just hang around aimlessly.

Since you started at the top of the tree, now you need to get the
parts at the top, and move everything half a dozen screens to the very
bottom. I can say that I scratch my head at this point, see? Are
there other options, or anything I have missed?

This could really take a while, as is.

Another thing is, say on the other hand you take a fresh new Account.
It has automatically like 5 folders or something to start off with.
Try create a new folder. Now, if you try to move the original bunch,
Inbox, and so on, it seems to fail. When you drag one to the new
folder, the pointer does not change form as you would expect.

I agree that having the option 'Insert new folder here' would help, I
sometimes create a subfolder using one the folders I wish the new

the folder, I just move it to where I want to using
Shift-CTRL-Left Arrow

The same problem exists with filters. If you have a long list of
filters and you wish to create a new one that goes at the top of the
list, you have to drag the new filter rule all the way to the top of
the list since a new filter is always created at the bottom of the
list.

Insert Before/After buttons for new rule creations would increase

Font Size - The width and height of the ASCII characters

Column Headings - The ASCII characters above the lists of folders, and

Some of the Column Headings are Name, Unread, Total, Subject,
From, Size.

When opening it minimized it will just sit in the traybar and
when I click on it it will open but just in the middle of the

(I start it minimized)
When opening TB (with start-up folder) in maximized window it

- Setup *everything* in Manage View Modes (which can be found in

- Setup each individual view mode
- Then, go into the Use By and click on all the folders that should
use each view mode (I think you need to also click the Account as
well)

I have found that the Folder Properties View Mode setting does not
work.

Tray Icon tool-tip

2003-12-12 Thread Ken Stuart
Hello,

Currently, the Tray Icon tool-tip simply reports the total number of
unread messages in the whole database (or possibly just the Account,
but they are the same in my setup, so I cannot tell which).

Is there an existing enhancement request to make the Tray Icon
tool-tip utilize the Folder Property Show unread messages on
MailTicker(tm) and also to use the MailTicker(tm) time settings?

Panda Titanium antivirus and TB?

Is anyone using Panda's Titanium antivirus product with TB? As far

this might be a good solution. My company is switching to Panda, so
I've got to figure out what my solution is going to be.

 Any help appreciated,

Sorting new messages and focus

2003-12-12 Thread Wayne Howard

There has been one thing that has been really bothering me. Is there a
way to change the default sort of new messages? I sort on the Received
Time, in Ascending order. When new messages come in, I would like the
focus to be on the top message of the column. Otherwise, I have to
reach for the mouse and then scroll to the top to see messages off the
screen. It kind of defeats the feature of being able to use the
spacebar for advancing through my messages.

Thanks!

I didn't post an oops message because I thought that would just add
yet more clutter to the list - but since you commented...

The problem was that I used the RFC Headers command to look at all
the headers in the message just before replying. In all other e-mail
clients that I have used, quoting never includes the headers,
regardless of how many headers are being displayed in the message view

Now I know that The Bat! has this behavior and I'll watch for it.

(Perhaps an option is needed Popup a warning if all headers are
quoted...)

Edition and announces a Special Offer: from December 10, 2003 to January
10, 2004 you can register The Bat! with 30% discount.

Only for registered users of The Bat! version 1: during the Christmas
Offer your upgrade discount is 30% in addition to 30% Christmas discount
which yields 60% as a total discount
/quote

First, users were more-or-less being pushed to upgrade to 2.xx at 50%
discount, being $17,50 per personal copy, as I did (and probably many
more).

Now, 1.xx users can upgrade to 2.xx for $35 - 60% = $14.

Why do I, an early adaptor of 2.xx, feel being F ?

This is true of early adopters of EVERYTHING.

For example, a new 133mhz PC was US$2500, now a 2000mhz PC is US$400.

Originally, DBS satellite receivers cost US$800, now they give them
away if you sign up.

The flip side is that, in all cases, the early adopters get to use the
product ... early.

Spam reporting

Bayesit Training (download)

2003-12-12 Thread John Morse
Hello The_Bat! Users,

I have uploaded my entire Bayesit directory, so that anyone can
download it and have the pleasure of using one of the finest spam
filters anywhere. You will not have to train it with so many emails,
like before, just download and install Bayesit from here:
http://klirik.narod.ru/usefuls/bayesiteng.htm
...then download these files
http://legacy.sheltonbbs.com/~jmmorse/Bayesit/

and then unzip them to your Application Data directory, it will
overwrite your Bayesit folder. Or you can unzip them to a temp
folder and then move them to the Documents and Settings/Application
Data folder manually. (you should already have the Bayesit folder
there since you installed Bayesit, just overwrite it)

For example mine is found at:
C:\Documents and Settings\John\Application Data\Bayesit

After downloading all 6 files, then double-click the one named
BayesIt.part01.exe When you unzip these files it will replace your
Bayesit folder in your Application Data Directory.

Here are a list of all the files (with file sizes) you will need to download:
BayesIt.part01.exe (1.4m)
BayesIt.part02.rar (1.4m)
BayesIt.part03.rar (1.4m)
BayesIt.part04.rar (1.4m)
BayesIt.part05.rar (1.4m)
BayesIt.part06.rar (583k)

Don't worry about training Bayesit with a bunch of messages, just go
through the motions, because this will replace all the training
anyway.

I never get a false positive with this plugin, and only get a new
piece of spam to my inbox only every few days.

I should caution you that the From: header is almost never the
person who is sending the spam.

I often see this pattern in spam:

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED]

and so forth.

For example, I received a spam with the From: line:

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

where they are clearly taking the first part of my address and adding
that to @stockscenter.net since the spam was about buying stocks.

The spam actually says Visit our web site @__ since they don't
want you to use e-mail to communicate with them, since none of the
e-mail addresses are theirs.

Even the first Received from header's IP address can just be a relay
point.

Trying to report spammers doesn't work - they just move somewhere
else. Spammers send spam because some people buy the stuff, and as
long as that continues, so will they.

Only two things work - the less effective one is using spam software
to filter your mail and then delete the spam after scanning the
titles/senders for real e-mails. The only effective one is changing
your e-mail address, and then not using it on the web or in newsgroups.

Nice gesture, but a bad idea IMO. The beauty of Bayesian filtering is
that it learns from an individual's email. Other users may well get
spam of a different nature than yours and, aside from TB! mailing
lists, will almost certainly receive a different assortment of good
mail.

Here's an excerpt from an interesting article on Bayesian filtering:

,- [ http://www.paulgraham.com/spam.html ]
| Ideally, of course, the probabilities should be calculated
| individually for each user. I get a lot of email containing the word
| Lisp, and (so far) no spam that does. So a word like that is
| effectively a kind of password for sending mail to me. In my earlier
| spam-filtering software, the user could set up a list of such words
| and mail containing them would automatically get past the filters. On
| my list I put words like Lisp and also my zipcode, so that
| (otherwise rather spammy-sounding) receipts from online orders would
| get through. I thought I was being very clever, but I found that the
| Bayesian filter did the same thing for me, and moreover discovered of
| a lot of words I hadn't thought of.
`-

I haven't used BayesIt, but the training period for POPFile was
remarkably short. Well worth the effort to have it know *my* mail.

HTML not creating links

2003-12-12 Thread Ken Stuart
Hello,

I received a monthly newsletter in HTML, with a link that is
referenced by clicking on an image.

Now, unlike many newbies, I don't expect The Bat! to show the image,
but isn't it a bug if it doesn't make that area (with the red X) into
a link, the same as a browser would do with the actual image?

Here is an example (with web address changed):

a href=http://www.blah.org/merchant/new.html;img
src=http://blah.biz/merchant/moreinfo.gif; width=77 height=17
border=0/a

If that same href were attached to a text, it would be clickable, so
why not make the 77x17 box with the red X clickable ?

PS Has this been reported to the bug/enhancement database before?

Actually I know most of that, but I just opened a new
email account and the first mails I got were spams from
yahoo addresses ... on the one hand it's pointless to
report them, because as you say, they will simply have
new addresses tomorrow, but on the other hand, if you
don't report them, everybody thinks the spam problem has
gone away.

I'm also aware of the spoofing issue, and find that most
of the ip's involved are not merely overseas, but also
have no address to report to.

Having said that, I'd really like to find the control
that attaches an email to a new mail intact because it's
a useful thing to be able to do, I've done it before, but
can't find the control or the mail reference to it ...
and I promise not to lose it this time if someone can

Thanks...
