Here are the main ones:

1. Main Window's main menu shortcuts can be used from other windows, so you
should be careful assigning shortcuts to there.
2. Single-character shortcuts should not be used in main menus of any window as
they will intercept those characters from input controls, so it is recommended
to use them in local menus of lists or those controls that are not using text
input.

Hi there

Just wondered whether the bat allows us to use standard Gmail shortcuts
within the app? I've grown quite used to using these in other email apps
and wondered if the bat supported this?

Thanks

On that page, select the link for "Program interface" and then scroll
down about two thirds of the page (14 times on my screen), you get a
brief mention: "In the Shortcuts section you can check the shortcuts
set for certain program actions and specify your own shortcuts. You
can also remove shortcuts if needed."

And it is in the help file for my TB! version, although the menu route
listed to get there is incorrect.

Yes, it is changeable. These are the steps to do it:

1.- Open a text editor window (i.e. new message)
2.- Right click on the toolbar and select 'Customise'
3.- On the Customise window, on the the left of the Menu & Toolbar tab
(Containers) select Main menu.
4.- On the top left, select the Shortcuts tab. Main menu will now show
expanded.
5.- Expand 'Utilities' by clicking on the + on the left.
6.- Double click on 'Insert Quick Template' end the Shortcut Edit
window will open.
7.- Select Ctrl+Space a click on Remove button.
8.- On the right, where 'none' is shown, type your new desired
shortcut and hit the Add button. Confirm your new setting and then
click on the OK (or Cancel) button of Customiser

It *is* corrected, thank heavens. Thanks to the help from the guys in
the Czech Bat! list, I was given the suggestion to try the latest Beta
version, 4.2.10.12, and keyboard shortcuts editing works again. Hooray!

However, as to smileys, these still aren't displayed, despite identical

3.xx, which is the last time I ever saw smileys displayed here. (Admittedly,
a cosmetic issue compared to the keyboard shortcuts.)

It looks like this may have been caused by a conflict in versions, too.
Believe it or not, the smileys are *slowly* coming back. :-O I wouldn't
have thought this possible, but right now in *some* emails, the smileys
aren't displayed, and in other emails (like this one I'm currently composing),
they are displayed OK. Well... anyway... my warm recommendations to
everyone to upgrade to the 4.2.10.12 Beta version, as it seems to have
worked wonders on my computer, compared to the most recent regular

No Keyboard Shortcuts Customization, No Smilies After Upgrade

2009-10-04 Thread aam

Hello, I have just upgraded to the current version of The Bat, 4.2.10.1,
from 4.0.38. After upgrade, the following 2 main bugs occur:

* I can no longer edit keyboard shortcuts. If I attempt to do so and
confirm the change, the window immediately disappears and the change
is NOT saved. All shortcuts appear to be frozen from the 4.0.38 status.

* Smilies do not get displayed, even after activating them the rich-text
viewer.
They are present in the standard The Bat! directory in Program Files.

I will appreciate any help. Customizable keyboard shortcuts are essential
for me, and a show-stopper in case they aren't available in the new version.
I would need to downgrade. Thank you very much for any suggestions.

Shortcuts for expanding and collapsing threads

2007-01-26 Thread Robin Anson
Batfolk,

I want to find, or set, shortcuts for expanding and collapsing
threads. In some earlier version of TB! I could expand or collapse all
threads, or just the email thread I am currently in. In the current
version SHIFT-8 (i.e. *), CTRL-8 and CTRL-SHIFT-8 (i.e. CTRL-*) will
all toggle expanding all threads and collapsing them. The effect of
each appears to be the same.

However when a thread is collapsed it only collapses at the top level,
so that if I open the root of a thread (with right arrow) I see the
entire tree expanded, not just the next level. The only way I can find
to collapse the entire thread completely is to work from each leaf
node of the tree and use the left arrow to collapse to the next node -
a tedious business!

Is there a shortcut in the current version that will collapse the
current or all threads so that I can expand it just to the next level?

I looked for a menu item to expand or collapse threads, so I could
(try to) set a shortcut using the (fiendishly incomprehensible) menu
customisation process, but I was unable to find one.

Can anyone offer a suggestion?

Associating shortcuts to view modes

2006-10-11 Thread Claude Renaud
  Hi all,

Few TB versions ago it was possible as far as I remember to associate
shortcuts to view modes, and if my memory serves me well, there were
associated with shortcuts such as alt+shift+1, alt+shift+2 etc.
Currently it is not possible to quickly switch from view mode to view

Is it possible to regain this function or should it be added as a future

There are two options I think. I think you can set shortcuts for view
modes in viewtoolbarscustomiseshortcutsviewGlobal view mode or
you can change the method of threading a message by the following

· None - no threading, all messages are shown individually. Alt + 0

· References - uses two header fields, In-Reply-To and References,
which both contain unique Message ID's. Alt + 1

· Subject - threads are made up of messages with the same subject line
(minus the Re: for replies). Alt + 2

· Sender - threads by the name/address in the From header. Alt + 3

· Recipient - threads by the name/address in the To header. Alt + 4

But i'm not sure thats what you meant. But thats all I know.

Yes, I lost all of my shortcuts when I upgraded to my current TB!
version, from another recent 3.x version. Next time, just manually
 back up the

 drive:\Documents and Settings\You\Application Data\The Bat!\tbuser.DEF

file prior to upgrading, to avoid trouble in having to re-create
some or all of your keyboard shortcuts.

Thanks for the reply, but I did backup my tbuser.DEF, and this was not
the problem.

I'll try to explain the phenomenon more in detail:

* go to the Customise dialog

* pick up a menu item without a shortcut (in my setup: Main Menu /
Main Form - Message / Park)

* you can verify that no shortcut is defined on this item (nothing is
selectable)

* assign Alt-\ as shortcut, and close the Customise dialog

* in the main menu (Message / Park) you can check that the shortcut is
correctly assigned (and it works)

* shutdown and restart The Bat!

* in the main menu (Message / Park) the shortcut no longer appears

* in the Customise dialog, if you select the Park item you can see
that an *empty* shortcut exists, you can remove it, but it is no
longer working as Alt-\

I have the impression that the issue is with the backslash. I could
use another key as shortcut of course, but on my keyboard it is really
handy, and I've been using it for a lot of time...

Can any of you confirm this? Is this a bug that should be reported?

Thanks.

Shortcuts not saved

2006-03-19 Thread Philippe Macaire
Hi all,

since I upgraded to 3.71.03, it seems some of my shortcuts are not
saved. Apparently it happens when my shortcut contains the '\'
(backslash) character (e.g. Ctrl+Shift+\). I can define it, then use
it as long as TB is running, but as soon as I close and run again TB,
my shortcut has been cleared. Before this last upgrade I had no
problems with such shortcuts.

Did anyone experienced a similar behavior?

Thanks a lot.

Shortcuts Conflicts and Shortcut Collections

2006-02-02 Thread Allen Day

After a bit of a hiatus from the luxuries of The Bat/client-side

interface for editing shortcuts/toolbars/menus is most certainly

  prolbems with it, however.

First, conflicts--is there no way to tell if there are conflicting
shortcuts or am I missing something? Also, there are a few items
called Shortcut Collection -- where I'd expected to find all the
shortcuts for the parent container, however this isn't the
case--there are shortcuts listed, but by no means all/most of them.
  What's the shortcut collection for?

  Thanks

Shortcuts all messed up and how to do

No all my dozens of carefully crafted shortcuts are gone.
Having gone carefully through messages on the list

Someone please run me through a sequence of events

Alternatively how do I get back to where I was

What a mess, and the helpfile bears no relation to

And even the shortcuts that I seem to be able to
assign don't work (so if I assign control R to
mark a message Read, it still opens the message
for a reply despite altering the apparent shortcut
stated on the right click menu (and even after
removing the shortcut from the previously
designated ^R).

Wish I hadn't installed this. My previous version

Hello Robin,

Okay, I finally took the plunge and upgraded from 3.0.1. Now where has
 the keyboard shortcut configuration gone??

View/Toolbars/Customise (or right clicking on any toolbar or menu). It
may seem a little awkward at first and you may not actually be able to
assign al shortcuts you had before. 'Customise' is not yet complete.

Hmm, the keyboard shortcut I wanted was one that set the folder view
mode. On v3.0.1 it came as part of the default setting. In v3.51 I can't
see it at all. Is it one of the ones that can't (yet) be assigned?

Under Available Items on the left side, find Message Controller and
then scroll down to mFolderViewMode. Try adding it to a new menu and
then setting a shortcut to it. You should be able to then hide the new
menu and have the shortcut still work.

Hello tbudl,

I know everybody's off testing the bugs in the new version, but I'm
currently searching myself to death for a simple keyboard shortcut:

Collapse Thread (i.e. completely collapse the current thread)

An old shortcut list I have says it's ctrl-* but that does not work
on my german keyboard (most probably because the * is shift+PLUS,
which is the shortcut for open thread...

And I can't find the item Collapse Thread in the customiser. Anybody
knows where it hides?

!!! Idea !!!
How would it be to have a quick search field in customiser so
I can search for Shortcuts or functions/items by namecl? I never know if I need
to search a certain function under MsgCtl or meEdit because I
don't know what MsgCtl is...

Currently the new customizing model doesn't allow for color groups,

However, you're lucky, as it is possible to assign color groups with a
filter action and you still can assign shortcuts to a filter (at the

So I suggest you follow that path.

This is normal behaviour - it's very much like the previous versions.
The menu of the main window is considered as global and it handles
all keystrokes that were not handled by menus of the currently active

the main window menus, such shortcuts should be defined in pop-up

BM Some of my shortcuts are missing since installing 3.5. The help file states
BM that shortcuts are accessible with View | Edit Shortcuts.

BM I cannot find this. Where is it hidden?

You can do this via View | Toolbars | Customise. HTH.

Thanks Natasha, since I didn't want to customize any
toolbars, I didn't look there :)

You can do this via View | Toolbars | Customise. HTH.

No reference to shortcuts I can see in there.

Two things the developers need to look at now:

1. Move all the editing functions to and editing dialog - makes far
more sense than View.

2. Change the documentation to match the change please (I know it is
difficult keeping the documentation up to date on a forwever changing
landscape but...)

Meanwhile how do we edit shortcuts!!

An updated documentation is already in the works, it just wasn't finished
in time for the 3.5 final.

RitLabs has contracted with a professional writing firm to write a
completely revised Help File. One of these writers posted recently to
TBBETA that it's almost finished--is at the proofreading stage.

Meanwhile, there are some things still useful about the old Help File,
so it's good to have it, but it should not be taken as gospel. With
v. 3.5, sections are obsolete, and additionally many places in the
Help Topics Index give a good description of a feature but not a clue
on how to access or implement it. :unreal2:

(BTW, the above Smiley is from the PCWize collection. :) )

TBUDL, TBTECH, and TBBETA are TB!'s documentation. ;) Keep on
patiently asking your questions here--my best advice.

Customised shortcuts working where they shouldn't.

2005-05-15 Thread Allie Martin
Hi all,

I've been fiddling with customisation which has been going fine without
stability issues.

However, one problem that has found its way into the release.

I added 'move to next unread' to the 'Message' menu of the main window.
I then assigned it a shortcut.

Unfortunately, this shortcut works when the editor is in focus. I
assigned the shortcut as N, and now in the editor, I can't type 'n'
when editing.

Why did you add it to the Message menu? Wouldn't it be better to just
add the shortcut N to 'move to next unread' in message list context
menu? That is what I have done with 'Enter', which is my preferred
shortcut to move to next unread.

It will work only when the message list is in focus. I prefer if it
works from any of the panes as CTRL-] does.

It is clear that each user has his preferences, so nothing to argue :)

BTW, CTRL-] doesn't work here from any pane. But it is because it is an
impossible key combination on a Spanish keyboard ;-)

Yes. :)

This is my habit and what I'd consider smooth operations.

I'm going through messages in the message list. I go to next unread with
N and scroll with spacebar.

I wish to reply to a message quoting selected text. I move to the mouse
though I'd love a single key toggle to bring the preview pane into focus
so that I could select the text with the keyboard.

I select the text and then hit R for the reply to appear.

I type my message then hit CTRL-M to send immediately.

I'm now back to the main Window.

I'd now love to be able to continue reading with N, but I left the main
window with the preview pane in focus. I now have to get the message
list back into focus. I have to reach for the mouse just to do that
since tabbing doesn't work too well and often takes longer than just
using the mouse.

In Mulberry, it's all a snap.

1,2,3 moves me between panes.

tab takes me to unread messages whether the message list or preview pane
is in focus.

I don't have to reach for the mouse during browsing.
