[Texascavers] Change of Mailing address & Lengthy email

2022-06-28 Thread Bill Bentley

Mike and Others,

Please let the SWR & Everyone is the Speleo- World know that I have a
change of mailing address.

It is now William (Bill) T. Bentley

3323N Midland Drive STE 113

PMB 221

Midland Texas 79707

My physical old house address is the same as as it has been since
19/30/1993

400 Eastwood Drive ( I just can't seem to get my mail there )

Midland Texas 79703

Here's is why and reading for your amusement!

Yesterday I had to pay to go get a Pac Mail mailbox and there were so
very friendly I was pleasantly pleased and I will use this cheap gas
(LOL) to go check it every week or so, but it's near one my grocery
stores so all is not a complete loss and today I started the arduous
process of changing all of my mailings especially some lifetime
membership magazines.   (I already talked to Michelle at the NSS)
All because the Untied States Postal Service is denying me the
free service guaranteed to every property owner in this city ( Yeah
right) if you you should dare ask your carrier who will be a different
person from one day to the next then you will get threatened and cursed
at by by Shirley at Claydesta Post Office in Midland and then hung up
on. Real unprofessional and criminal behavior. She actually said we
don't care your delivery and we want get you arrested by postal inspectors.
I don't know maybe at some point if they do this to enough people
something might change but I doubt it.

and on another note:
Okay I've given everyone over 2 years now to let them know that
ca...@caver.net was going away. It's gone.. a autoresponder mostly
ignored told ya so. If you still email me there. I don't know what to
tell ya.. I can't fix stupid. Tired of even trying.

I maybe crazy people but I'm not stupid!
Sincerely and with love to all my caver friends especially the craszy ones!

Re: [Texascavers] Speelunker Cave ride to open at Six Flags Over Texas :

2022-05-13 Thread Bill Bentley
I graduated from high School in 1977 and went to Arlington and stayed
with my oldest sister and her late husband for that Summer, I worked
nights at a place called Meritex Plastics on Randoll Mill Rd making A
framed little hollow bars for integrated circuit chips it was 19.5
inches long and made from virgin poly vinyl chloride plastic which just
so happens to have natural anti static properties and made after taxes
$115.00 a week.

But I got me a $29.95 Season to Six Flags over Texas, I bet I
spent 4 out of 5 days there at the park. I knew it backwards and
forwards, quickest route to anything I knew shortcuts even through
employee only areas. I got away with it because I have always had the
ability to fool people into thinking I known what I am doing. I could be
at entry gate to the shock-wave Roller-coaster which opened that season
in 4 minutes or so, I knew where best food for money was and to know
some the regular worker's during the week it wasn't as crowded as
weekends. Now you may ask why I am telling all of this? For one thing I
can remember it in great detail and because I would go through the
"Spelunker's Cave" there to cool down and it was highly air-conditioned.
To ride 4 to 5 times back to back and that helped you tolerate that
nasty old East Texas Humidity which I never did like.  I didn't think it
was like a real cave as I knew it for what it was, but at 17 back then I
was probably smarter than kids today in knowing al little bit about a
lot of stuff.

My short term is going which is irritating as hell and do a whole lot of
repeating or so they say.

I would say something about cannabis  or hemp but you all know and my
views on that have drastically changed! LOL.

Thanks for evoking a memory of fun times at age 17.

Cavers are the best!

Bill

When Mike lived in Odessa he helped me and a few others get trained to
do vertical rope work. I remember his trips into Wizards Well, it was
full on go and we never rested but once in 28 hours . He was always a
good friend to me and many others, I have some great memories...

Re: [Texascavers] Crane Bat Cave Clean Up, Sunday, March 14 2021

I have been all over King mountain and any other hill all the way to
Indian mesa around Crane Texas, I did not even know there was a cave
there, more or less with bats, I must have missed that one, but I do
tend to forget things these days.

Folks,

The San Antonio Kickoff for the International Year of Caves and Karst
was last Sunday, March 14, 2021.

I want to thank everyone that came out to the Crane Bat Cave property
cleanup. The weather was cool and overcast and we were able to fill
two twenty-yard roll offs with ranch waste. We also created some piles
of trash we had drug out of the weeds which will make cleaning up the
property easier in the future. Materials ranged from shingles, sheet
metal, an old chicken coop, boards, old swing set, wire, fencing, more
wire, glass, and more sheet metal. There was also a large metallic
disc that was too large to pick up and was hot to the touch. We tried
to break it up with a sledgehammer, axe, grinder, reciprocating saw,
cutting torch, and couldn’t dent or even scratch it (You know if Paul
and Stephen Bryant can’t tear it up, it has got to be tough). We
figured we could get some worth decent beer money with it at the scrap
yard. We could hear something moving around inside but couldn’t see in
the windows. I slapped a yellow bat sticker on the thing and left it
for the next cleanup.

We had about 28 people attend the event. I think the Aggies drove the
furthest to get there and always put in a great effort. Others came
from Austin and the rest from the San Antonio area. Here is a list of
people that attended. (I’m sure I’ll get some of the names wrong but
folks need to learn how to write their names so an old man can read
them.)

Mike Yang (Austin), Alan Montemayor (aka Curly Merkin), Nat Clark,
Kori Dunaway, Richard Silver, Adam Dow, Mauri Attil, Marco Ramos,
Srirm Madabushi, Tom Florer, Mark Dobson, Mark Walker, Sara Ranzau,
Liz Brearley, Catherine Daas, Dilan Klessel, Alyson Lipsett, Garry
White, Bobby Randolph, Isabell Petersen, Chelsea Parada, Paul Bryant,
Rebecca Bryant, Liam Bryant, Stephen Bryant, Marrin Atzil, Leia Hill,
Geary Schindel, and Engledink Humperbert (British singer that provided
entertainment.)

The Crane Bat Cave property was acquired to protect the contributing
zone of the Edwards Aquifer and will be used as a nature preserve. We
contributed about four hours labor each with 28 people for a total of
112 person hours of work. At $15 per hour, our efforts were valued at
$1,680. I used the $15 amount since we’re dealing with skilled caver
labor and many have prior  experience picking up trash along the
highway (the orange jumpsuit crowd). I would have valued the work even
higher, but we couldn’t get the metal disc cut into smaller pieces.
Maybe Galen will come down next time and do a little micro-shaving
with some diamond bits.

Jim Bowie’s buried silver was not found under the trash piles but I’m
sure it’s there. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Thanks to everyone that helped. It was nice to get folks together, do
a little socializing (at a distance) and I  It has earned us a lot of
good will with the city.

[Texascavers] Bill Bentley

2020-11-23 Thread Bill Bentley

Greetings fellow cavers,
As some of you may know already.. but I have 2 more tests to rule out a
diagnosis of something they call "Lewy Bodies Dementia". But I have all
of the symptoms. I have known myself that something was not right for
quite a while. I was glad to finally get some answers that made sense.
My family and friends have been wonderful in their support so far. I
hope to soon be making a few bucket list trips. I also am trying to make
the conscience effort to be upbeat and positive through it all until
such time as I can't.

God bless all my friends and people that care.
I will try to post as much as is possible.
Take care and try to make someone smile and brighten their day and think
of me.

Keep the undying spirit of exploration going.

[Texascavers] Fwd: Hudspeth County caves?

2019-03-27 Thread Bill Bentley

Can you all help Charles,

El Paso and Hudspeth County is 300 + miles from me.

 Thanks,

Bill

 Forwarded Message

Hi,

I am working with cave-obligate pseudoscorpions in the Appalachian region. Next
week I will be at Indio Ranch (aka Indio Mountains Research Station) in
Hudspeth County, it’s a 40k acre property owned by University of Texas El Paso.
I am primarily looking for species related to eastern ones that occur on the
surface in the area, but will happily poke around in caves as well while I’m
there. Would you be willing to share data on caves in this region of the
county, or for the whole county?

I am a NSS member (#67409) and have presented my research at a few NSS
meetings. I’m planning on attending NSS 2019 to present the results of my PhD
research in the biology part of the meeting, which will include what I find on
this trip next week.

Thank you!

Charles

I could deliver but he'd have to hitch back with someone else.

But I am at the point today, where I either need to start turning down work, so
that I will be free the week of the convention,

It might as well be in Hawaii or Alaska or Taiwan or Puerto Rico or Guam, etc.

Driving my Sequoia there, especially alone, would be one of the stupidest thing

Flying seems impossible, since I waited so late.

I imagine others will skip this year too.

But I had fun at Bellingham, Marquette and Essex Junction and Maine, and other

This list has always been self moderated, at least in the 13 years
I've run it, and probably before then, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

If someone gets out of line, send them a PRIVATE message. If a few
people did that every time someone did get out of line, it would
likely solve the problem.

We are up to 388 members on the list, there is no way in hell that
everyone is going to get along, and while it would be nice that
everyone acted like an adult, there is little chance that is going to
happen as well.

Cavers are a stubborn bunch for the most part, it takes that
stubbornish attitude to keep digging in a cave that you feel a slight
bit of air in, or hope that it's about to expand and go another 10
feet or 100 miles.

Here is a little fact, 1 out of 10 people who say that they are going
to quit, actually do.  Most just start lurking or stop reading it, but
do not actually quit the mailing list.  I know, because I get an email
every time someone quits, and to join, I have to approve (to prevent
spam bots).

We get about 10 - 20 requests a day to join the list from spam bots,
most of them are obvious and I delete. Occasionally someone has an
email address that is iffy and I have to email them to see if a human
responds.

We also get a couple of hundred emails a day of spammers just trying
to send junk mail to the list, these are blocked since they are not
members, and since I get notifications on this, I have to filter
through and delete.  There is about .1% one of these emails are legit,
a caver forgets and sends an email to the list serve from another of
their email addresses.  Sometimes I catch these and allow it to go
through, most of the time I don't, but I do try.

Please keep in mind, everyone has an opinion, no one opinion is right,
and while you don't agree with your fellow caver about their opinion,
it's their right to say it.  You do NOT have to listen to it, and in
this context, that's what the delete is for.  It's also your right to
quit the list, or just setup a rule in your email to delete an email
if it comes from a particular person.

In my mind, moderation is akin to censorship, and yes, that's a very
loose interpretation, but it's not something I'm willing to do, as
long as everyone is civil.  We have 4 simple rules :
http://texascavers.com/rules.html Civil discourse is the key here.
Unless it gets unruly, I'm not going to do anything but eat my popcorn
and watch.  I've only had to remove 1 person in 13 years.

On another subject:
The deterioration of the TexasCavers listserve is quite amazing.
The fact
that it is not moderated has been seen by a small number of users
as an
opportunity to subvert it to a personal blog by a few who have
lost sight of
the stated purpose (or choose to ignore) and feel that "anything
goes."  It
is ironic that this condition drives away the very people it was
meant to
serve.  Cavers are a tolerant group but individuals do have their
patience
limits.  With increasing frequency we see "goodbye, I've had enough"
postings from longtime supporters of Texas caving.

A previous attempt to create an "off topic" group was a failure
because the
abusers of the main list failed to acquire a large enough
readership to
satisfy their needs for attention.  Subtle (and not so subtle)
requests to
"take it off-line and/or use personal messages"  have been ignored.

Because Texas cavers have no reliable newsletter, if TexasCavers
listserve
fails to serve its purpose, what are we to do?  I don't have a
good answer.
I can't blame Charles Goldsmith for wisely choosing not to
moderate the
list.  Who would like that job?  Perhaps we need an "ON-TOPIC"
listserve
with  a "three strikes and you're out" policy.

I'm hanging in there but it's requiring an increasing effort and
my delete
key is looking quite worn.

Re: [Texascavers] [SWR CAVERS] 12 miles in USA Today

2017-07-11 Thread Bill Bentley via Texascavers

37 years of caving is limited experience... Geez.

Maybe that was why I was denied entry into Lech too because of my
limited experience...

I was told I had to volunteer to work and do my part to go there several
years ago... I have yet to be notified that I could participate even in
a mule fashion of assistance.

My perception hasn't changed one bit.

As far as Whitenose... Did anyone even listen to Dr. Tuttle at the
Convention? The country's foremost and knowledgeable person said there
isn't much anyone can do except let it run it's course. Yet things have
not changed and caves still remain closed or limited.

Bill,

I agree that this is an unfortunate perception of the FSCSP.
However, we work very hard to be as inclusive as possible. The
perception of privilege and exclusivity is, for the most part, a
consequence of the severe limitations on entries imposed by the BLM.
The management plan for Fort Stanton Cave calls for as many as two
trips per day with as many as 10 cavers per trip. That plan has been
superseded for the last several seasons, in response of the perceived
threat of WNS, with an annual limit of 120 entries into the cave.
That is supposed to accommodate all research, exploration and
administrative entries for the season, from April 15 through October 31.
Because of this severe limitation, every entry into the cave is
valuable and we have to make sure that we make good use of each entry.
It makes it difficult for someone of limited experience to be placed
on a trip, but it does happen. We encourage trip leaders to be
inclusive, and in the last couple of years, where more activities were
focused on the historical part of the cave because of flooding in
Snowy River, several new cavers and cavers new to Fort Stanton Cave
got an opportunity to participate.

Will this bring us some new NSS members?

This news release does refer interested individuals to the Fort
Stanton Cave Study Project web site, but that is clearly written for
established cavers. It gives the dates for the upcoming project
schedule.

Your web site is wonderful, conveys the right message, and is very
educational. You list a series of requirements for participation in
work trips and then say:

---

The FSCSP is unable to accommodate persons not possessing all of the
above skills, attitudes and equipment during project events in
caves. However you are welcome to join us in surface events where we
perform other work including ridge-walking and various scientific
activities such as geophysical surveys during regular or special
expeditions.

Fort Stanton Cave is a publicly-owned resource and sections of the
cave have been available in the past for recreational trips under a
permit system from April 15 through October 31. Although the cave is
currently closed to the general public because of White Nose
Syndrome requirements, in the future interested persons may contact
the BLM
<http://www.blm.gov/nm/st/en/prog/recreation/roswell/fort_stanton_nca.html>
for information concerning application
<http://www.blm.gov/pgdata/etc/medialib/blm/nm/programs/recreation/rec_docs.Par.35039.File.dat/Cave_Application.pdf>
for a public entrance permit, or directly at the Roswell BLM
office,. In addition to the SWR <http://www.caves.org/region/swr/>,
the BLM also may be able to provide contact information for caving
clubs where appropriate experience may be gained to enable future
participation in FSCSP projects.

---

How do you plan to respond to inquiries from non-cavers in light of
this discussion of getting new NSS members? It does not seem very
welcoming but clearly this is something that needs to be dealt with
on an individual basis. The implication is that you will refer them
to a local grotto. It's not clear what the SWR is, but you can find
out by clicking on the link.

It will be interesting to see how many inquiries the FSCSP and the
BLM get from non-cavers and cavers who are not NSS members. I would
say that this is both an opportunity and a worth-while experiment.
Keep us posted!

The first part of this message may only be useful peripherally. The last part
will be directly useful to you and perhaps may other Texas cavers.

About 25 years ago the manager of the Annie Riggs Museum in Fort Stockton was
quite knowledgeable about the spring. I'm drawing a blank on her name but she
is no longer there as I understand. However, the museum may have information
about the spring. Also,
it is not unusual for some old-timer to serve the unofficial role of city
historian in small towns. If Fort Stockton has one, the museum staff would know
who it is.

There is a short write-up in The Caves and Karst of Texas that describes the
cave which underlies the spring, in case you haven't already seen it.

Lastly, TSS has a bibliographic database called TexBib that anyone can download
from the TSS website. You can then search on "Comanche Spring" and you'll get a
list of all publications TSS knows about that mention the spring (or any cave,
spring, author,
 topic, etc. involving Texas).

[Texascavers] Andy Kominsky

2017-03-29 Thread Bill Bentley

Copied from Facebook

It is with a heavy heart that I share that my dad, Andy Komensky
<https://www.facebook.com/andy.komensky>, died unexpectedly this
afternoon in St Louis. In true Komensky form, he and Maureen had just
arrived at the Casino for a few hours of diversion. Maureen said that
dad probably didn't have any forewarning and that he did not suffer.

I am grateful to Maureen - more than words can possibly say. Maureen
helped my dad live the fullest possible life.

I will post more information as we know it. If you have particular
questions, please reach out to me or Susan Komensky-Hamilton
<https://www.facebook.com/susan.komenskyhamilton> directly. I think
Maureen knows how to get into Dad's Facebook Account so you can also
leave a message for Maureen on Facebook too.

Dad would want no goddamn sadness... everyone go grab your favorite beer
and have a toast to the Mad Russian of New Mexico!

I don't know any other way to contact his Duryea, Pennsylvania/Carlsbad,
New Mexico/Spelunker/National Park Service/Geological Society friends
and acquaintances except via Facebook.

As Carl Kunath wold say "We are diminished."

Repost of my comments for those among us not on BookFace.

A)
Fending for ourselves disrupts the communal nature of the Saturday
evening meal. If we end up going this route it would be important to
continue with Saturday evening activities that encourage everyone to
come together.

B) Catering will drive up the cost
and limit the meal options. There really is a limit to the amount of
fajitas or mediocre BBQ we should be forced to eat.

C)
Folks stepping forward. This is a challenge as we can clearly see the
job is pretty thankless. "You didn't cook polecat three ways this year,
how the hell do you expect me to eat?!?" Most of us no longer cook for
the masses either. Watching new folks struggle to tackle the TCMA breakfast
every
few years is always a hoot and it's on a much smaller scale.

Alternative
option ) Grotto cook-off - Create competition amongst the grotto's and
tie it into the theme. Have the parade start a little later and
everyone can tour the camp dining at the different offerings or it could
all be brought to a central location. This helps share the load and
teach folks to cook on a larger scale before having to tackle the big
feed themselves.

Important Cave Finds in Chihuahua

INAH Archaeologists in Chihuahua have investigated a cave where an infant
skeleton, the lower half of a man whose ankles were tied, and the remains of
a scarlet macaw along with points, textiles, a sea shell, a bag of deer
skin. The remains were naturally mummified by the dry desert air. The finds
possibly date to 2000 years ago. The site is 250 miles from Paquime, which
was a trading hub between Mesoamerica and the Ancestral Puebloans. The finds
suggest the site pre-dates Paquime, which was founded around 1,300 years
ago. The discovery of a scarlet macaw that pre-dates Paquime may show that
long distance trade in exotic goods predate Paquime.

Western Digs has the report here;

I plan to arrive around noon or so on Saturday and we can work on the
road until dark or until we are exhausted. We are camping Saturday night
and will finish up on Sunday.

You must be a TCMA member to help out.

Bring tree saws, choppers, cutters and tools to remove mesquite mostly
and some cactus.

Contact me via email if you can help out.
No trips into the cave are planned.

Subject: [Texascavers] sort-of NSS related

I imagine by now, Monday evening, that the attendees to the 2016 NSS Convention
are either safely home or back to work, or at their post-convention destination.
For me personally, getting back to work in the real world was both physically
and mentally challenging.   I had symptoms similar to Regret Sex.   Meaning, I
enjoyed it, but regret doing it.    Had I accepted some cavers offers to stay
home for financial
gain, I would have not missed work and could have easily relaxed by the pool.
I am almost caught up at work with the task that I postponed.   Everything
would be fine now, if my customers were not such a**holes,  ( I have lost all
respect for attorneys ).   All I have left to do is tedious bull-collecting,
meaning I finished all the
deliveries that I postponed.    That was mostly luck.
When I was leaving Houston for the trip 10 days ago, I was optimistic that I
would either pick up a caver along the way, or a Craigslist rideshare-rider.
I even tried to get cavers flying into Phoenix and Vegas to ride with me.   And
even nudged one caver
to drop work and to fly out to Vegas.
But that was all wasted effort.
I have rested up now, and I should be back to my normal grumpy self tomorrow.
It sounds like the convention was a success.    I would have never believed
1,000 cavers would show up in Ely.    Ely is a remote place.    The nearest
Walmart Store was a 3 hour drive.
I could have easily spent a week in Ely in April or September.    But not sure
if I would want to live there.   I think it would have been like living in
Alpine, Texas, as far as being far from things.    However, there was really
cool stuff within a 6 hour
drive.   I have no idea what life in Ely would be like in the peak of winter,
but I can only guess that it is harsh.
See you all in Rio Rancho in 2017.    I hope I can fly to that, but will most
likely wait till the last minute and drive again.
I encourage young cavers to attend next year's convention.   It is inspiring to
meet like-minded people who love caves, and the maps are so cool and the photos
and artwork are interesting.    And there are usually unique opportunities to
go caving.

send them a private message if possible.
If you don't like the list and how it's run, anyone is free to step up and take

This is "caver culture” related:Back in the day, Austin cavers used to
congregate for lunch at the “caver table” in the Chuckwagon snack bar in the UT
Student Union. We were occasionally joined by some of Austin’s rising
counterculture literati, including a very funny and talented Vietnam War vet
named Big Boy Medlin. Big  would occasionally attend parties at the Kirkwood
Kaver house and other 1970s caver hangouts along with his fellow contributors
to our beloved bi-weekly hippie newspaper The Austin Sun, including Jeff
Nightbyrd, Michael Eakin, Bill Bentley and David Moriarty.Big and many other
Austin writers and film people of that period eventually emigrated to LA, where
he helped launch  LA Weekly, co-wrote the screenplay for the movie “Roadie”,
and became Head Writer at E! Entertainment Television. For today’s younger
cavers, who missed the opportunity to enjoy Big’s writing in the long-gone
print version of the Austin Sun, the publication has been re-launched this
month as a website featuring contemporary contributions by Big, Bill Bentley,
and Michael Ventura.Here’s the link:http://www.austinsun.us

As I stated before to everyone, this was forced upon us because of

I know it's a pain about the lack of name for some people, but without

Call for Presentations: US Exploration Session at the 2016 NSS Convention

Hey all:

This year is the 75^th Anniversary of the NSS and that event will be
celebrated in Ely, Nevada during July 16-23, 2016.It is also a great
opportunity to share with fellow cavers your cave discoveries,
exploration stories and mapping exploits at the US Exploration Session.
This is one of the Convention’s most popular and well-attended venues.

You don’t need to have made record-breaking discoveries to present – all
exploration is good and can be effectively displayed with photos
(salon-quality not necessary), any kind of maps, and some good stories.

Presentations are relatively painless – 15-20 minutes in length is
typical though we can provide some 30-minute slots.Single or multiple
presenters are welcome. Presentation format is open - powerpoint or
other computer media, slides if that's all you got!, or just stand up
and tell some good exploration stories!

For the program, please send an abstract (short summary of what your
talk is about -250 words max) to Pat Kambesis, US Exploration Session
Coordinator at pat.kambe...@wku.edu .
Deadline is May 10, 2016.

Feel free to forward this message to other cavers!

See you in Ely, Nevada!

Here's a conservation project you may want to support:

'The Friends of Mammoth Cave' are asking for assistance in their special
restoration efforts within historic Floyd Collins Crystal Cave. Check out the
Indiegogo Crowdfunding Campaign the 'Friends' group has initiated, along with
a story describing how Jim and Val Werker are assisting in ongoing speleothem
repair efforts in this famous Kentucky cave.

About 10+ years ago, I was very lucky to find several new copies of the books
at the old Half-Price Books on Guadalupe St in Austin for about $25 each.
Probably because HPB was getting ready to move.

A group of cavers saw Jean Clottes speak about 10 (?) years ago on successive
nights in San Antonio and Austin, sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of

the books which he gladly autographed. He was happy to know there were cavers

Thanks, Jerry. That sure sounds like a very impressive job of creating an

Inevitably, the discovery of Chauvet Cave gave rise quite quickly to a couple

Chauvet Cave: The Discovery of the World's Oldest Paintings, by Chauvet,
Deschamps, and Hillaire, 1996, seems to be out of print. So, apparently, is a
paperback reprint from 2001.

Chauvet Cave: The Art of Earliest Times, edited by Jean Clottes, 2003, is also
out of print.

Such coffee-table art books seldom stay in print for long. They end up on
remainder tables within a year or so. Both books are available used.-- Mixon

Call for Presentations: Cooperative Projects between Cavers, State
Surveys, Agencies and NGOs at the NSS Convention in Waynesville,
Missouri, July 13-17, 2010.5

The purpose of this session is to look at ways organized cavers can work
with a variety of government agencies, local governments, and
non-government organizations that manage caves.

Emphasis is on survey, monitoring, data management and restoration projects.

A major part of this session will be a round-table on state cave surveys
and how the proper accumulation of data gives cave organizations the
ability to interdigitate with agencies and others that need that data to
properly manage cave resources as well as to effectively explore new
opportunities for discovery both on and off public lands.

Presentations are 20-30 minutes in length. Let us know how much time
you need. Presentation format is open to any medium. Let us know if
you have specific needs for your presentation.

Send an abstract, no longer than 250 words to daniellamp...@att.net
http://daniellamp...@att.net/ by April 25, 2015.

Please share this information with other cavers.

Making valued contributions are essential to maintaining access to
publicly owned caves. In addition, proper management of and access to
data is key to successful cooperation among cavers in order to support a
wide range of projects. Cavers around the nation have been doing this
for decades. Come share what's worked and what has not.

For Sale: Deep, Spacious Roswell Property, Once Occupied by a Missile

 By RICK ROJAS

The Roswell, N.M., site had been the home of an Atlas-F missile, 100
times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki. The silo
is a fixer-upper, to put it mildly.

Next is the date. There have been several traditional weekends and many

Re: [Texascavers] Summary of last night's DFW grotto meeting

2014-11-20 Thread Bill Bentley via Texascavers
Well, you could come to the PBSS Christmas party at my house on Friday
Night Dec 12th...

We are gonna party like it's 1985!

On 11/20/2014 7:32 PM, Diana Tomchick via Texascavers wrote:

These are not official meeting minutes, but several people were not able to
make it to last night's DFW Grotto meeting, and asked me to fill them in on
some things that happened.

1) We re-elected the current slate of officers to serve again in 2015.

Chair: Jake McLeod
Vice-chair: Jacqueline Hawk
Secretary: Bill Steele
Treasurer: Diana Tomchick

2) Since no one could agree on a good weekend in December for the annual grotto
holiday party (too many travel conflicts), we decided instead to have a New
Year's party on Saturday, January 3rd. Tom Sims has graciously offered to host
the party; more details will be forthcoming.

3) For the last approximately 6 months we have known that our long-standing
meeting site (the Dallas REI store on I-635) would be closing and moving to a
site closer to the SMU campus and less convenient for the current membership.
We have tried to find another inexpensive (i.e., free!) meeting room in the
same general area as the current site, with no luck. Bill Steele has been in
contact with the Southlake REI store (which just opened last weekend), and they
are happy to have us meet there at our traditional monthly schedule (the fourth
Wednesday of every month from January to October, and the third Wednesday of
November). The new meeting room looks much better than the one we currently
use--it has built-in A/V and will seat 35 people. The address for the new
meeting site is

1011 East Southlake Boulevard, Southlake, TX 76092

The REI store is the first store to open in this new mall. We have yet to
decide on a restaurant for the traditional after-meeting dinner; more details
will be forthcoming.

4) Four new cavers joined the grotto last night. They attended the November
Colorado Bend State Park Project and are excited about going caving this
weekend with the grotto at Spring Creek Cave.

5) We showed the Honey Creek video (by Joe Furman Jean Krejca) as our program
last night, and hopefully some of the new members will want to help out with the
January Tank Hauls.

I think I can speak for all the grotto officers when I say that we are really
looking forward to a great new year of caving in 2015. We are also hoping that
the new meeting location will attract new members from all over the DFW
Metroplex.

I may or may not be able to set up and take down. Too far out to forecast.
I have a question though about what call sign will be used? Will
it be W5MAF?, which is currently assigned to Les Blalock N5KOA as a
Trustee for the West Texas Skywarn Association. Has he been asked? As a
courtesy he should be notified as it is his license on the line if
someone violates the rules and a heaven forbid a citation should be
issued by the FCC. Hopefully with competent control operators that won't
be an issue.
I certainly don't mind being the control operator while I am there,
which would give everyone the Extra Class Portion of the band privileges.

I say take lots of pictures and show the others what they missed.
Make sure there is coffee and donuts and it will be okay.

[Texascavers] Fwd: FW: EMERGENCY BULLETIN - Huge Flood hits BTSR

2014-09-17 Thread Bill Bentley via Texascavers
This is a call for anyone in case they might be interested in doing some
service work.

Thanks,
Bill

From: gracie.quint...@scouting.org
Subject: EMERGENCY BULLETIN - Huge Flood hits BTSR
Date: Wed, 17 Sep 2014 22:41:19 +
To:

Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch desperately needs clean-up crews to dig out
from a major flash flood that came down from Goat Cave Creek on Friday,
September 12th. It was larger than anything experienced in at least the
last 30 years. Flood damage includes:

* Pool shower house / latrine

* Rocks and boulders in the pool

* Slab for the pool has been partially washed out

* Large trees between the Old Folks Home and the pool washed out

* Both Jeeps, all Kawasaki Mules and four ATV's were submerged

* Shop area was flooded leaving large amounts of silt and rocks

* Water damage to Ranger's house, Buffalo Hall, and the Dining Hall.

BTSR needs anyone that can come out with a shovel in hand. Please
consider coming to BTSR over the next several weeks to lend a hand. With
Cub-O-Rees scheduled October 18th and 25th, we need to make sure the
Dining Hall is operational. The bottom line is BTSR needs help,
desperately! The ideal weekends are the weekends of September 26 - 28,
October 3 - 5, and October 10 - 12.

If whole troops are unable to help, individuals or families are welcome
to volunteer weekdays or weekends. Contact Rangerdan directly to
schedule a time and projects. You can reach Dan at:

rangerd...@hotmail.com mailto:rangerd...@hotmail.com

432-426-3709

If you have your own, please bring:

* Shovels

* Rakes

* Wheelbarrows

* Gloves and any other tools that would be beneficial

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the damage at camp, any camping will be primitive.
Troops need to bring their own food and water. At this time, there is
water available but we cannot guarantee that it will still be when you
arrive.

EARTH: Valley Fever an Occupational Hazard for Geoscientists

Alexandria, Va. - Valley Fever - a sometimes-fatal infection with no known
 cure
and no vaccine - is caused by a soilborne fungus that thrives in the hot, dry
soils of the southwestern U.S., Mexico and Central and South America. However,
recent reports of infections far outside the endemic area indicate the fungus
 is
either spreading or becoming active in new areas. The disease is contracted
through inhalation of fungal spores, which can be aerosolized by soil
disturbances from construction, excavation, gardening and landscaping, as well
as natural events like dust storms, earthquakes, landslides and wildfires.
Geoscientists working in the field need to take precautions against
 contracting
 the disease.

For the record - and I'm not mad at anyone; I think this is a good
discussion - the Texas caving news appearing in the latest issue of
the NSS News is in Buford Pruitt's Underground Online column.
Buford's method - as I understand it - is trolling the chatter on
various blogs, email lists, etc. across the nation and compiling the
interesting bits in his column. That is how a Colorado Bend trip
report, a Government Canyon trip report, and a report on the latest
Deep Cave trip ended up in the NSS News. They were not sent to the
News as an article to be published but were instead picked up by
Buford off of this very email listserve. That's great. Cavers across
the nation and the world need to see that Texas cavers go caving and
do interesting things.

I know that occasionally the three people who wrote those reports for
Texascavers.com also compile the happenings in their respective
projects in a bit more of a readable and concise fashion with pictures
and maps and submit an article to the Texas Caver. That's also a great
thing. If the editors of the Texas Caver want to pull things of the
email list and publish it, more power to them. I'll continue to
support the magazine and the TSS and news about caving in Texas
wherever it appears.

[PBSS] Mailing list change

2014-07-25 Thread Bill Bentley

Greetings fellow Cavers.,
Just an FYI to everyone, I've made a change to the mailing list
software on the reply-to section. It used to default to the user who
sent the email, and people had to hit reply-all to send back to the
mailing list.

This now defaults to the list, and while not optimum and would not be my
first choice, the anti-spam measures of AOL, Yahoo and a few others are
forcing us to do this.

If some of you received notices saying that you were removed from the
mailing list, and if you read the body of that message, it talks about
providers rejecting email from mailing lists, due to DMARC policies.
That policy is forcing me to make the changes.

I know, a lot of technical mumbo jumbo (borrowed from Charles
Goldsmith), and if you have any problems or questions, feel free to
email me directly.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) --- For the first time in more than 30 years,
paleontologists are about to revisit one of North America's most
remarkable troves of late Pleistocene fossils: The bones of tens of
thousands of animals piled at least 30 feet deep at the bottom of a
sinkhole-type cave.

Natural Trap Cave in north-central Wyoming is 85 feet deep and almost
impossible to see until you're standing right next to it. Over tens of
thousands of years, many, many animals --- including now-extinct
mammoths, short-faced bears, American lions and American cheetahs ---
shared the misfortune of not noticing the 15-foot-wide opening until
they were plunging to their deaths.

Now, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management is preparing to reopen a metal
grate over the opening to offer scientists what may be their best look
yet at the variety of critters that roamed the foothills of the Bighorn
Mountains during the planet's last glacial period around 25,000 years ago.

Des Moines University paleontologist Julie Meachen said she has been
getting ready to lead the international team of a dozen researchers and
assistants by hitting the climbing gym.

I'm pretty terrified, Meachen admitted Wednesday.

She hasn't done any real climbing before, she said, and the only way in
is to rappel down. The only way out is an eight-story, single-rope climb
all the way back up.

The cave is perpetually cold and clammy, with temperatures in the
mid-40s and humidity around 98 percent. Even Bureau of Land Management
regional paleontologist Brent Breithaupt, who isn't one to get the
willies from lots of animal bones, describes it as a tad creepy.

1.I was unable to attend the last SWR regional due to scheduling

find it surprising to be asking for regional support after the fact.
If it was discussed and approval received from a majority of the

2.Who will be the SWR’s “experts” who will be reviewing the documents.
If you are questioning the veracity of the scientists and the land
cave managers, they have every right to ask the same of the SWR. So…
I, as a SWR member, am asking: Who will be our experts who will be
reviewing the said documents and what are their credentials?

3.It appears that a great deal of information has been requested. How
will the fees for labor and coping charges be paid? Were these

All,
On Tuesday, May 20, 2014, our SWR Vice-Chair, Jim Evatt notified the
membership in the SWR, through the SWR mailing list, that a Freedom of
Information Act (FOIA) request had been filed by the SWR for information
related to the BLM's management of the threat of White Nose Syndrome
(WNS). This act, arguably the most significant act taken by the SWR
for a generation, is the result of a string of events over the last
several years. I want to give the membership some of the background
that led up to this request.
As most everyone knows, WNS is a debilitating condition that has
affected hibernating bats, primarily in the eastern United States and
Canada, causing very high mortality rates in the bat colonies from the
fungus that causes it. /(P. destructans)./ The first evidence of WNS
came from Howe Caverns, a commercial cave in New York, in 2007.An
initial thought was that perhaps a caver from Europe possibly brought
this fungus to the United States by visiting the cave with clothes that
were contaminated with the fungus. As more and more evidence
accumulated of the devastating effects of WNS to bats, the US Fish and
Wlldlife Service developed guidelines for the various cave management
agencies to use regarding the potential spread of WNS. These guidelines
included recommendations to close caves and abandoned mines to human
entry because of the possibility that humans may be a significant vector
to the transmission of the condition.
In January of 2011, the NM BLM published a Federal Register Notice of
Temporary Closure of 28 caves in New Mexico known to have significant
bat populations, probably as a direct result of a report of an infected
bat in the neighboring state of Oklahoma. That Temporary Closure was
for 2 years only and expired in January of 2013. At the 2012 Winter
Tech, Ms. Marikay Ramsey (BLM bat biologist) announced the intent of
the BLM to renew the closure. In January of 2013, at a special meeting
in Albuquerque, Jim Goodbar, National BLM Cave Program lead, again
discussed that intent, and also mentioned that 3 of the caves previously
closed would be re-opened. The BLM revealed that it was delegating the
management of caving activities under the threat of WNS to a state-wide
Cave Management Team.
Cavers waited for the announcement that the Temporary Closure was being
renewed, or that a new Temporary Closure was being instituted. This
didn't happen (and hasn't happened to date). Instead, the BLM merely
said that the caves are closed. Cavers inquiring about the closure
were told that BLM didn't need to have a Federal Register Temporary
Closure because the cave specialists could merely refuse to issue permits.
This management plan, if it can be called that, for the BLM caves that
were previously closed by Federal Register Notice persisted for another
year, as cavers became increasingly dissatisfied with how the caves were
being managed. Meanwhile more research was being done on WNS; research
that demonstrated that bats were very good at transmitting WNS from one
to another, but that humans ere not very good at spreading the fungus.
In fact, we know of no credible evidence that WNS has been spread from
one cave to another by humans.
At the spring SWR regional on April 12, 2014 there was a significant
discussion of the BLM's continuing stand that they could close the caves
by just saying they are closed and what to do about it. One idea was
to ask for permits for some of the closed caves in order to bring the
issue to the forefront. This was done by several folks, including Dave
Belski and Stephen Fleming, who both requested recreational permits to
Fort Stanton Cave. Both were denied.
On May 6, 2014 the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation
announced that the previous report of a WNS bat in Oklahoma was a false
report, and that no WNS infected bats had been detected in New Mexico.
On May 9, BLM's Chief of Communications issued this statement to the
SWR mailing list:

*BLM New Mexico White-Nose Syndrome Closure Strategy Update*
*May 2014*
BLM New Mexico is evaluating the new information released by the
National Wildlife Health Center about the Woodward County, Oklahoma bat
originally tested in 2010 being now reclassified as negative
for/Pseudogymnoascus (/formerly /Geomyces) destructans /and White-nose
syndrome (WNS).
At this time, we are sustaining our WNS cave and abandoned mine
closure strategy. The BLM’s team of biologists, cave specialists, and
managers will work internally, as well as with our NM interagency
partners, to consider the new Oklahoma findings.
The BLM is the responsible party for managing hundreds of New Mexico

You all might tell your buddies that are on AOL for email that AOL in
it's infinite wisdom are rejecting emails from list servers like SWR

I doubt they will ever see this message..

The caver.net mailing lists are down as the server is being migrated I
don't think anything will be lost... only delayed...
Thanks,
