Hi jxself, I find your response interesting. So, you're saying the concept of
'cloud computing' is fundamentally incompatible with free software, because
we don't have control of software that is running on another person's
computer?
But, I often see web-based e-mail services, such as
Hi! Yes, I mean the latter - an external service similar to AWS, where I
could rent access to cloud computing hardware for hosting a website or web

You don't think any of the options on the page I linked are fully compatible
with free software? Why is that?
Sorry, this is the link:

(Damn, I'm always doing that!)
Hey, I'm just wondering if anyone can recommend a good free-software
alternative to Amazon Web Services? I did a quick DuckDuckGo, which turned up
this list here, which looks promising (it says 'open source', but most appear
to be free software):
Hi alimiracle, thank you for the offer, that's very kind of you. Although,
from other discussions I've had, it seems that GlassFish may not be what I
need after all. Thanks again though :-)
I installed the package in the Trisquel repository and, as far as I can tell,
it seems to be Java EE 5. So, perhaps the Debian package is out of date (and
has been carried downstream to Trisquel)?
I think for now I'll probably just go with the download from the GlassFish
website.
Hmm. According to the Wikipedia page, GlassFish 5.0 was released on 21st
September 2017 and is compatible with Java EE 8. Unless I'm reading the
package version wrongly ... but, that Debian page you linked says it is
compatible with Java EE 5, which seems pretty old, if the current version
The latest version appears to be licensed under the GPL.
It seems that, even in the Flidas repository, the version of GlassFish that
is included is extremely old. The version of the 'glassfish-javaee' package
is given as 1:2.1.1. I'm not actually sure if that means version 1 or 2, but
the most recent version is 5, which was released last year.
Using smartmontools to read the 'SMART status' of the HDD, it seemed to be
fine. I also ran a short self test on it and that checkout out fine. So, I

Ok thanks. One other question though: if I back up the root partition into a
tar archive, will that preserve the file/folder ownerships and permissions?
Ok, thanks for your advice, Magic Banana. I will give that a try, although I
am using LXDE, so I'm not sure if that same option will be in there. It's a

I think the best thing that can come out of this mess is an increased drive

It might be worth the OP checking the config settings for the Trisquel
kernel, to see if the voltage/frequency scaling features are enabled. If not,
that might be part of the reason that the machine is running hotter under
Triqsuel. Although, I would think those things should be enabled, if
Any changes to those files are not going to persist when you reboot the
machine. The /sys directory is populated/refreshed by the kernel during boot,
to provide info about the underlying hardware to userspace processes.
I was going to suggest adding some commands to one of the init scripts,
I don't think there should be too much concern about 'frying' the PC. There
should be a thermal cut-out that will immediately shut the power off if the
machine gets too hot. When I bought my Macbook 2,1 off of Ebay, the fan

From what I read in the news articles, it sounds like the issue is a flaw in
the chip design, which can't be simply fixed by updating the microcode. In
which case, the only way that Intel can fix it is with a new chip design,
which will almost certainly include their horrible Management
Oh, that laptop has 2 fans? I've only got 1 in mine. Were they both running
previously? That might explain why they were running at a lower rpm, if
you've got two to help with the airflow. I don't see why you shouldn't be
able to do the same thing with the second fan to increase the speed.
Also, you can try doing something more intensive, such as compiling something
using multiple cores or playing a video or game. If you do that, does the fan
speed increase to help manage the temperature? If not, again, that probably
suggests that the controller is not doing its job well,
Yes. Just replace the 0 with a 1 and that puts it into manual mode. Then, you
can manually change the demanded fan speed by editing fan1_output in the same
way. I suggest upping it to around 5800 to see if that helps bring the temps
down.
What do you get if you type:
cat fan1_output
and
cat fan1_input
when the machine is running hot?
fan1_manual will be set to 0 by default, as it will be in 'auto' control
mode. I tried setting it to 1 with:
sudo echo 1 > fan1_manual
but that didn't work for some reason. However, I was
Ok. Is that when the machine is running hot, under load? If so, then that
would suggest to me that the controller is not good, because it is not
demanding the max rpm when the machine is hot.
Try setting the fan speed to 5800 manually and see if that brings the
temperature down.
cd = change directory. You can change the working directory to that folder by
typing:
cd /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768
Then, you should be able to view the values in the fan1_input and fan1_output
files that I mentioned, to see more details of what the fan is doing. With,

btw, the 'sensors' command should also print what the min and max fan rpm

4000 rpm sounds a bit low to me. If your system is set up like mine, the

if I cd to that folder and type:

If you have 'lm-sensors' installed, then just typing 'sensors' in any
terminal prompt should show you the temperatures and fan speed. If not, then
there may be a PATH issue.
What does the fan speed show as if you use the 'sensors' command (with the
lm-sensors package)? If the machine is hot and the fan speed is very low or
zero then, if upgrading the kernel doesn't improve it, it's possible that
your fan may be faulty. I believe they can be replaced - I got a
Good idea :-D
Ok, thanks, I hadn't considered SFTP, but it sounds like a good option to

Interesting. I wonder why they would run hotter under Trisquel than Parabola?
I assume Parabola uses the same Linux-libre kernel that Trisquel does.

it's probably using a newer kernel than Trisquel and maybe they've

Hi gnutastyc,
Thanks for the info. I downloaded that diff you pointed to and patched

that fixing the package builder should be a high priority, if it isn't
working properly.

I'm interested to try to lend a hand with fixing some package helpers, to try
to do what I can to contribute to getting Trisquel 8 ready for release, but I
have a couple of questions:
1) Why is the HEAD of the trisquel-helpers git repository pointing to the
'belenos' branch? Isn't flidas
I'm writing this on Trisquel 8 right now - it's completely useable (although
perhaps not quite stable enough yet to be formally released).
I managed to solve the authentication issues by simply re-installing the
'Trisquel-Keyring' package. New packages are now authenticating fine with
Flidas. However, if the keys had been updated, shouldn't that have prompted a
package upgrade?
Ok, thanks for your advice, Magic Banana. I will try the latest kernel and
see if that trackpad driver is any better. Failing that, is it possible to
'transplant' a kernel module from an earlier kernel version into a newer one?
I had originally intended to use the shared /boot partition to simplify
things, so I could use the same kernel and grub.cfg to boot up both systems.
But, that doesn't seem to work, because Trisquel uses an initramfs and LFS
doesn't. So, my /boot partition is becoming a bit of a mess of
Well, I have some complications, because I have Trisquel 8 and a Linux From
Scratch system that I am booting on the same laptop, so I want to have a
separate /boot partition.
I don't like grub-mkconfig either ... it usually just makes a mess of
everything :-(
I renamed and moved the update-initramfs binary, then replaced it with a
short script that removes the old image first and then runs the relocated
tool for the running kernel version. Seems to do the trick! :)
I seem to be having some problems with automatic initramfs updates when I
install/upgrade certain packages via Synaptic.
Firstly: I have a newer 4.8.0 Trisquel 8 kernel installed, but I didn't like
it (the trackpad driver seems worse), so I've gone back to using the 3.13.0
kernel from

Does anyone know what is special about an 'amd64+mac' ISO anyway, compared to

In that case, you may have to try the Sugar or Netinstall versions mentioned

My Synaptic is telling me that there are a load of packages that can be
upgraded for Trisquel 8. However, when I 'mark all upgrades' and then
'apply', it tells me that it's going to have to install 154 new packages,
including some that seem a bit strange (e.g. upstart, which is listed as a
I had a similar problem installing Trisquel on my Macbook. Unfortunately,
Trisquel doesn't seem to provide an 'amd64+mac' ISO, which is required to

It looks like linux-firmware is only a dependency of linux-image-lowlatency

Ok, thank you for these details - this is all very interesting :)
Ok, thanks jxself. It seems that I had some misconception about how the
firmware/bootloader interact. So, it sounds like the main differences between
BIOS and UEFI are in the services they provide after the hardware is
initialized (which in Libreboot is determined by the payload)?
So, am I

I don't know if you saw it, but I made a bloggy post a couple of days ago
about upgrading from Trisquel 7 to 8 on my Macbook laptop:
Upgrading to Trisquel 8
I ran into problems with some packages breaking, but was able to get the
upgrade to work in the end.
Thanks for answering my question, Leah, although I don't think that was quite
what I was getting at. As I understand it, there are two firmware
'paradigms': BIOS and EFI, which are quite different in the way they work.
So, I am wondering if the Libreboot firmware is more similar to BIOS or
This sounds promising, if it is true. However, as I understand it, such a

firmware to be ported to it, or that there won't be other issues, like
requirements for signed microcode.
Yay! Trisquel is saved!! :-D
It seems that, for the most part, Trisquel 8 is working and available, for
those that want it. I guess we just need to polish out a few remaining issues
and get the word out there then?
One comment I have is that it doesn't really 'look' that much different to
Belenos. For example, it
So, I've fiddled about a bit more and I seem to have gotten it working (sort

I'm hoping that the upgrade would have removed Upstart and installed Systemd,

No, unfortunately not. I really want to use LXDE, so if it's got broken
