Well, since the almighty Ubuntu wiki tells me to, I suppose I should introduce myself. Hi. As you can tell by my email address, I'm Connor Peet. I've been a fan of Ubuntu for neigh on four years now, and have recently started looking at giving back to the community. I am a student, and part time web developer/graphic designer/general computer guy, who also happens to be good with graphics. I began playing with and (at first) breaking computers about six years ago, and have been graphic designing for most of that time. With that said, is there anything that needs to get done? Re: [ubuntu-art] Introduction
I think they've started to hit a tipping point recently. I was always a staunch PS user - hated gimp. Recently, I started designing websites in Inkscape and have been coming to love it. That's a lot of what I used PS for, so now when I have smaller graphics editing (not site design) I give it a try in GIMP first. It's gotten way better the past year or so, IMO. It certainly has all the power I need, it's just a matter of uncovering it and getting used to the interface - which is at least as good as PS, I'm just not totally used to it yet. The thing about open-source software is that it evolves quickly so you have to keep an open-mind and give things another try every once in awhile. -Nicky --- Challenge is the Opportunity for Greatness On Sun, Jun 26, 2011 at 1:53 PM, Andrew apperley the.adventure.ish...@gmail.com wrote: I've used gimp but don't find it easy to use. Hey, Alexander, I really like rbpitch5 and rect3813-0! rbpitch7 looks kind of like a certain rude gesture ;-) I might consider swapping out the excellent tuning fork from Saleel for rect3813... but it would be great if you could use the same pattern as 3813, but with the little horizontal slices like rbpitch5. So, combine the slices style of rbpitch5 / 7 with the vertical bar sizes of rect3813. That would be great! I'll still include saleel's svg in the distribution since it is a small file and people might prefer it, but I could switch the default if you make the requested change. [ubuntu-art] Introduction Request
Hello Ubuntu Artwork Team, I am a community / hobbyist developer, who has written a plugin for Rhythmbox called rbpitch. It is not being included in upstream Rhythmbox, but I have plans to get it one day included in Ubuntu, when it's ready. I have developed it using Ubuntu tools, such as Launchpad, Bazaar, and the Ubuntu Forums for user feedback. The plugin's feature is to allow near real-time pitch, tempo, and speed shifting in the playing song in Rhythmbox. It is licensed under the same terms as Rhythmbox. Here are a few relevant links: Screenshots: http://tiyukquellmalz.org/rbpitch-0.13.0.png depicting the configuration and user interface for rbpitch http://tiyukquellmalz.org/sean/rb-main.png with a stock GTK icon as a placeholder, where the rbpitch icon shows up on the Rhythmbox toolbar (see the red rectangle outlining the icon; I edited this in with GIMP.) User Feedback: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1303297 Launchpad (code, etc): https://launchpad.net/rbpitch I am writing to the Artwork team to ask for someone to design for me an icon to go on the Rhythmbox toolbar. My only requirement is that it be a distinctive icon. By distinctive, I mean, that it would be difficult to mistake the icon for another icon that is already used on the Ubuntu desktop. The reason why I want a custom icon is that the existing icons that are even remotely relevant, are already used. For example: icons of a speaker, music note, etc. are already used somewhere. I don't want to confuse the user. I could probably make a very bad-looking icon on my own, but artistry is really not my forte; I am a programmer. :-) I desire to make rbpitch available across multiple distros, but I've always considered Ubuntu to be the showcase distro of rbpitch: the one where I develop the code, and the one that (hopefully) will package it first. So in return for my contributing rbpitch to the distro, I would be grateful if someone could design an appropriate but distinct icon for the toolbar. If you would like to help me, then please reply with any ideas you have about what the icon would look like. If you are then able to create an icon, I will most likely accept your first submission if it is at least decent. My eye for aesthetics is poor, so I will readily accept something that someone else worked on and thought it was good. Technical requirements: 1. PNG, XPM or SVG format 2. 32 x 32 pixels if raster (there will never be a need to have a larger or smaller icon than exactly 32x32) 3. Background should be transparency so that the icon gracefully sits on the background color of the Rhythmbox window 4. Must be licensed under terms allowing royalty-free, non-restricted distribution in open source software. Example acceptable licenses: Creative Commons, Artistic, GFDL, GPL 5. Somehow the idea portrayed by the icon should be relevant to some of the concepts of rbpitch. Here's a concept list, including a brief list of possible applications: Concepts: speed, pitch shifting, music, sound End-User Applications: guitar practice, dance lessons, singing practice, entertainment, novelty, karaoke, vinyl playback, transcription, dictation And last but not least, I would be willing to make a $25 USD donation to the artist whose icon I accept, as well as a $25 USD donation to the Free Software Foundation (above and beyond my yearly membership). PayPal is my preferred payment method. I am eager to hear your feedback. And please feel free to send me elsewhere if I have found the wrong list for this request. :-) Thanks, Sean -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art
Re: [ubuntu-art] Introduction Request
Saleel, That will work great! The icon is kind of nice because the default position of the sliders on rbpitch is almost that shape :-) That's just the way it works out because of the supported ranges of pitch, tempo and speed varying. I know it's supposed to be a tuning fork, though: that is an excellent analogy to the physical world of what rbpitch can do. How would you like to receive your donation? Feel free to send me your paypal info off-list. I'll make the donation to the FSF shortly as well. I've wired it into the code with a few changes and pushed a revision to Launchpad. Installable debian packages for 10.10 are coming soon. How would you like to receive your donation? Feel free to send me your paypal info off-list. It was good practice, and that focused spec was also nice. Seeing how this is for an opensource project accepting the donation doesn't seem right, donate it to the EFF if you like :) Also the icon people on this list like vish, and thorwil, may have some critique/ improvements. -- Saleel -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

Hello everyone, I'm Goce. I'm a freelance graphic and web designer from Macedonia and I would like to contribute to the Ubuntu Art team. I'd like to introduce myself, and say that I've been reading the list periodically and would like to start contributing to the community. I've been a graphic designer for almost 20 years and am excited about this community. However, I must say I'm feeling a bit intimated and clumsy with understanding how the whole thing works. I'm trusting UDS Brussels will help. I'd also like to say, BRAVO to all who came up with the new color scheme and font! What a great improvement. Thanks, and I look forward to helping out in any way I can. [ubuntu-art] Introduction new Ubuntu user with gfx design experience
Hello all, I installed a desktop version of Ubuntu on my pc yesterday so i am very green to Ubuntu. But after some hours getting used to the new layout etc i really saw the great potential of Ubuntu! Still snooping around all the great apps and programs that are free and open source, installed some programs already but still looking for some that i use on xp(yes sorry i do own a copy of win xp)but that i would love to run in Ubuntu. But i do have over 10 years experience with graphics, designing in 2d and 3d on my computer. My tool of the trade are a wacom tablet, ps cs4, 3dmax, poser, bryce. I run my own website at darkdesign.eu where i share a wide range of resources. But you can also find my work at silver-.deviantart.com. Or you might come across my work some where else on the Internet I would defiantly want to spend some of my time designing something for Ubuntu and getting to know this new OS better. So if there is any interest, great project or something else i might be able to assist let me know. I´m following your discussion about the future of the Ubuntu Artwork with a lot of interest. I think you all are doing a great job with building a really beautiful Operating System. If there is something I can do to help you with your work please send me a message. If you need for example a place for uploading your artwork or functionality to discuss or vote on something I would be glad to help you. Greetings Lisa. It is wonderful to have a point person for the Edubuntu development! Currently we are trying to apply the existing Ubuntu design procedure to the Artwork cycle. We have two current Artists in Chief: Ubuntu -- Frank Schoep KUbuntu -- Kenneth Wimer XUbuntu needs an 'official' person to step forwards, although Mr. Mak's name has come up. We have been working on using the specification procedure at Launchpad to get the system up and running. http://www.launchpad.net/people/ubuntu-art/+specs We have been gradually evolving the process, and a good summary of what we have achieved thus far is located at the wiki (which we hope will centralize all the artistic related matters into one good starting point) http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork The specification outline was recently updated by myself according to Matt Zimmerman's email guidance. You can locate this here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs Hope this helps. I assume you might be able to dive into the process quite quickly if you examine the five approved specs at the artwork team Launchpad root. It would be extremely helpful if you could manage to get the Edubuntu team up to the same speed that the Ubuntu team currently is at. What would be extremely useful would be motifs and design patterns. We have a good starting point for Ubuntu here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Documentation/Philosophy This helps anyone contributing by locating a distinct grounding for development. Hi, I keep continue working on the xubuntu artworks, as Jani Monoses the chief developer of xubuntu asked me to do so; so far, we have done some preliminary decisions regarding edgy; for instance, we have decided that in terms of look and feel we would prefer a distinct character for xubuntu rather than just copy the ubuntu desktop. Currently, I have been working on new logo and gdm greeter ideas; also on a new splash animation that will eventually replace the current one.
