tried to reinstall xserver xorg and a number of other things - but so
far nothing has looked close to sorting things out. I will keep doing

Tried starting gdm via sudo /etc/init.d/start gdm - failed. The original error
about the usb cable has gone, but there is a line before the grub screen

Just tried the self extracting installer from the HP linux printer site.
Get error python-devel not found. I have attached a screenshot. I

OK, I was probably a bit quick to say the sound issue was solved. I do
now have sound, but I also have two 'speaker' icons in the upper panel.
So there is something still not quite right - I certainly don't have two

intermittent, probably happens about 50% of the time. Contact me if you

On shutdown, have to foa hard shutdown as it hangs and shutdown process

Have a compaq laptop (c792vu), wi-fi with the atheros wi-fi card was
working fine until kernel update. Now firefox has defaulted to 'working
offline'. When I uncheck the working offline box, firefox can't find a

Installed ntfs-config in intrepid ibex. There are two partitions, both
ntfs. /etc/fstab has the drives recorded correctly with 'defaults' set,
however the drives will not auto mount and it is requiring root
privileges to mount and unmount the drives. I cannot send a
dmesg|grep snd provides no output on my computer. Sound works fine with
2.6.24-18. Oh well, I'll keep using that. By the way, a friend of mine
has a computer with virtually the same hardware and the motherboard and
graphics card are exactly the same, but he has sound on kernel
2.6.24-21 - strange.
Had the same problem with kernel 2.6.24-21-generic when it was in the
proposed updates. Gave bug report then about the issue. The kernel
update I got a few minutes ago to 2.6.24-21-generic has again disabled/

Found that my entire /etc/apt/sources.list was wiped. Typed in sudo gedit
/etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/fstab was on the page. I have deleted that and
replaced it with a backup of /etc/apt/sources.list and now seem to be able to
upgrade again. At this point system seems to be working OK.

After update /etc/apt
Sorry, I am unable to provide any further information as the last
updates to hardy heron made my computer unbootable. Could not boot with
either kernel in normal or safe graphics mode.

Installing hplip-2.8.2.run, got a message that I had a crash near the
end of the install . Message came to log and report a bug. Same would
not open claiming firefox had crashed when it hadn't. Printer install
seems to work after reboot. Have tried this three times with the
