Over the weekend I downgraded from 8.10 to 8.04 to try and get around this problem, among others. Just now I found out that 8.04 shows it as well. I managed to get out of it with repeated ctrl-alt-F# poking this time, but I'll be using xlock and not the gnome screen saver from here on out.
