As for testing with your 6.12.0 version, I honestly wouldn't know where
to start. If there are instructions available somewhere for what I'd

In the absence of any help or feedback I've downgraded from 8.10 to
8.04. That system recognized the sound card immediately, and everything
worked just fine.
With the downgrade I can no longer reproduce this bug. I don't know
what should happen to it now.

8.10 not autodetecting my sound
Yesterday I saw this problem for the very first time using xlock instead
of the gnome screen saver. Whatever the issue is, I now know it is
possible to see it in xlock. It is, however, much more rare in that
environment.

Over the weekend I downgraded from 8.10 to 8.04 to try and get around
this problem, among others.
Just now I found out that 8.04 shows it as well. I managed to get out
of it with repeated ctrl-alt-F# poking this time, but I'll be using
xlock and not the gnome screen saver from here on out.
Here's a new variant of the problem.
I'm sitting in X and everything is just fine. I use Ctrl-Alt-F5 to switch to a
tty.
Then I try using Ctrl-Alt-F7 to switch back. That fails. I get a back screen

a mouse cursor (I-beam shape), but the system is otherwise completely
non-responsive to

I, too, am seeing what may or may not be this problem. I've seen it on
two different systems running 8.10.
The first was an ancient p3-800MHz that is now retired.
The current is a Dell Optiplex 330. I'll attach output pf lspci --vvnn

Logging in remotely I found nothing obviously wrong. System was almost

should emit sound from the speakers I have plugged in will do so. (Yes,

I previously uploaded a print attempt with LogLevel set to debug,
but I am trying to do that again now.
However, the system is behaving oddly. Here is what I did and what I
saw:
1) stop cupsd
/etc/init.d/cupsys stop
2) examine log files
/var/log/cups/error_log was empty - size

debug. I've never heard of debug2 and didn't use that setting. Here
