[Bug 1801071] Re: XPresentPixmap() BadWindow, recompiling fixes it

2019-07-16 Thread agent 8131
I consider this a regression from 16.04 to 18.04. However, installing
from eoan on 18.04 resolved this set of issues for me:

https://packages.ubuntu.com/eoan/amd64/libxpresent1/download

It would be great to get this into other versions as it seems like a
trivial fix.

[Bug 1825608] [NEW] Netbeans 10 on Ubuntu 18.04 has many bugs

2019-04-20 Thread agent 8131
Public bug reported:

I had to revert to 8.1 and pin netbeans and libnb-* to keep things
working. I don't have time to list all of the bugs I encountered and I
do not have the time to waste on something that isn't pretty much going
to just work. If anyone else has issues and wants to pin netbeans 8.1
here is the apt preferences I'm using:

Package: netbeans
Pin: version 8.1*
Pin-Priority: 501

Package: libnb*
Pin: version 8.1*

[Bug 1825604] [NEW] Netbeans 10 requires openjdk-11

2019-04-19 Thread agent 8131
Public bug reported:

I just had netbeans 10 pushed to my Ubuntu 18.04 workstation.

For netbeans 8.1 I was using openjdk-8 and did not have openjdk-11
installed so I didn't have to manage the versions. Netbeans 10 seems to
require class file version 55.0. Dependencies should probably be changed
on the netbeans package to reflect that. I think the issue is:

Depends: default-jdk | java8-sdk

This probably needs to be:

Depends: default-jdk

Or something more specific.

[Bug 1808858] [NEW] fonts-ubuntu-console listed by vrms without explanation

Public bug reported:

Is fonts-ubuntu-console really non-free? I have not been able to find

If the package is free then it should not be reported. If the package is

I am seeing this on Ubuntu 18.04. The fonts-ubuntu-console is required

[Bug 1799552] Re: services unmonitored on upgrade

2018-10-23 Thread agent 8131
Thinking a bit more I'm not sure unmonitor is ever the solution I would
want for these templates. I'm trying to come up with a use case and
can't do it. For now I've changes all "unmonitor" to "alert" in
/etc/monit/templates/root*. I'll give that a try for a while.

[Bug 1799552] [NEW] services unmonitored on upgrade

2018-10-23 Thread agent 8131
Public bug reported:

I just ran realized this line, "if failed checksum then unmonitor", in
/etc/monit/templates/rootbin and /etc/monit/templates/rootstrict is
causing me grief.

Basically if one updates the packages that are using these templates
they will become unmonitored which seems suboptimal.

Monit is probably not the tool to be using as an IDS. I am considering
these options:

"if failed checksum then alert"
- basically keep alerting about the checksum until the checksum is updated, a
process that is not well documented.

"if changed checksum then alert"
- alert on changed checksum, checksum automatically updates as of Version
5.16.0.

[Bug 1760907] Re: Netbeans 8.1 crash in splash screen

2018-06-22 Thread agent 8131
This is going to sound like a strange fix but I've had it work on 2
systems:

download: libequinox-osgi-java_3.8.1-10_all.deb
https://packages.ubuntu.com/artful/all/libequinox-osgi-java/download

Install it with dpkg or similar)
Run netbeans. It should load.
Run sudo apt upgrade to get the bionic version back.
Run netbeans. For me it still works.

In other words something about running with 3.8.1-10 fixes whatever the

I seem to have found a fix. There are no 386 packages installed as given
by:

dpkg --get-selections | grep i386

dpkg -l | grep :i386

However, editing /var/lib/dpkg/arch and removing i386 (leaving just

I'd suggest that given the large number of similar reports, probably all
with different packages at fault, the actual bug is more correctly that
the upgrade tools do not report the name of the problem packages.

line 129:
if dmask and dmask not in [ 'send connect', ]:

Hopefully a better fix is in the newer branch and will be released to

[Bug 1310292] Re: installing `ruby2.0` results in ruby 1.9.3-p484 as default version

2014-05-16 Thread agent 8131
I ran into this today. I was surprised that the update-alternatives

default:

sudo ln -sf /usr/bin/ruby2.0 /usr/bin/ruby
sudo ln -sf /usr/bin/gem2.0 /usr/bin/gem

No promises this will work 100% or not cause problems with other
installed ruby dependent software.

[Bug 575669] Re: Rapid depletion of entropy pool

2014-05-16 Thread agent 8131
This appears to no longer be a problem in Ubuntu 14.04 or at least I
have not been able to replicate it in the same way. This is still a
problem for 12.04 however.

[Bug 1277655] Re: Monit fills logs when reading 0 byte pid file

2014-02-28 Thread agent 8131
Easy to reproduce. Here's syslog-ng on Ubuntu 12.04:

monit/conf.d/syslog-ng:
check process syslog-ng with pidfile /var/run/syslog-ng.pid
  start program = /etc/init.d/syslog-ng start
  stop program = /etc/init.d/syslog-ng stop

make sure monit status is running

echo /var/run/syslog-ng.pid

Wait for monit to notice, then logs fill with:
monit: Error reading pid from file '/var/run/syslog-ng.pid'

Not the best example because syslog-ng will notice the empty pid file
and start a new instance so this will not fill the logs entirely but any
application that does not actively check the state of its PID file will.

[Bug 1277655] Re: Monit fills logs when reading 0 byte pid file

2014-02-17 Thread agent 8131
Is this is the only error you have seen in the log file? Or there are
others?

This is the only message

I think, there is - e.g. monit tries to restart this service. If this
is the case - this is expected.

This is not the case, monit is not trying to restart the service, it is
entering a tight loop trying to read the PID file, as I stated. All of
my monit configs have the number of restarts limited.

And you should fix this service - pid file shouldn't be empty!

Obviously, but that does not change the fact that this bug exists in
monit. Monit should fail gracefully, handling an empty PID file the same
way it would handle a non-existent PID file.

[Bug 1277655] [NEW] Monit fills logs when reading 0 byte pid file

2014-02-07 Thread agent 8131
Public bug reported:

When the pid file monit reads for a service is a 0 byte file monit
enters a tight loop and spews this error to the syslog:

monit: Error reading pid from file

It will write this hundreds of times a second until all disk space is
consumed.

I've verified this on monit 5.3.2-1 on Ubuntu 12.04 but not on other
versions as of yet.

[Bug 575669] Re: Rapid depletion of entropy pool

2013-12-30 Thread agent 8131
Christopher,

Can you explain how the commit you linked to resolves this issue? The
commit seems to place process permissions checks on /proc/pid/stat and
/proc/pid/wchan. I do not see how this affects the available entropy
unless entropy is being depleted by unauthorized processes accessing
those endpoints, which does not seem very likely to me. I doubt I will
have time to test trusty before it is released, but once released I will
test within a virtual server to see if this issue has been resolved.

[Bug 575669] Re: Rapid depletion of entropy pool

2013-12-30 Thread agent 8131
Christopher,

You did not address my previous question as to why that patch would
resolve this issue.

Am I correct in assuming that you are requesting that I reproduce these
conditions in the unreleased 14.04? It should be noted, if not reflected
in the bug status, that this is still a confirmed bug for 10.04 LTS and
12.04 LTS. Since the status of a bug may be different for different
releases is it the case that the bug status on this ticket is just meant
to reflect the state in the current development release? This is not
made clear in any of the documentation I've read.

For people coming across this bug report who have experienced
application blocking issues due to low available entropy (usually
running under some sort of virtualization) one easy solution is to
install the haveged package and run that daemon. Whether that provides
adequate security is open for debate, but it will prevent application
hangs while waiting for sufficient entropy.

[Bug 1179119] [NEW] libapache2-mod-rpaf error on remove

2013-05-11 Thread agent 8131
Public bug reported:

This has been reported before but not well articulated. libapache2-mod-
rpaf requires a successful restart of apache and a call to a2dismod to
be removed. This should not be necessary, it is not for other modules. I
switched to nginx and then wanted to remove apache. On a live server I
should not have to stop nginx, start apache (with an old configuration)
just to remove a package. Package should make a best effort to call
a2dismod and apache restart but if apache is not present (as in having
been removed) it should not fail.

With logcheck installed run

su -s /bin/bash -c /usr/sbin/logcheck -dot logcheck
broken version will end with something like this:

D: [1358289550] error: Killing lockfile-touch - 563

Yes, adding www-data to the nagios group is an easy fix. It also carries
grave security implications. Use at your own risk.

[Bug 992469] Re: apparmor chromium-browser abstraction missing in Ubuntu 12.04 upgrade

2012-05-02 Thread agent 8131
this can only happen when the apparmor-profiles package is purged

I am confident that the package was not purged during the upgrade
process. On the server text box I upgraded there is no /var/log/dist-
upgrade/term.log file. This box was upgraded from 10.04 to 12.04. I
will check the other box (which was 11.10 to 12.04) when I am able.
This does not happen on every upgrade, but it has happened 2 out of 3
times for me. I don't know if it has anything to do with the mode of
the profiles or something else that may have been changed about
AppArmor. If it had only happened once I would have written it off, but
twice I figured I would post what happened with the solution so that
other people can get passed this.

[Bug 992449] [NEW] Ubuntu 12.04 downloads i386 sources on amd64 system

2012-05-01 Thread agent 8131
Public bug reported:

I've only done 2 amd64 system upgrades to 12.04 but on both I've found
that after the upgrade the sources are pulled for both the amd64
architecture as well as the i386 architecture whic leads to various
problems. On a test machine I'm running in the the Dynamic MMap ran
out of room error. I do not need any i386 packages on my amd64
systems. There should be an option to disable this new behavior but I
have yet to find it.

guessing that's unrelated):

[Bug 992469] [NEW] apparmor chromium-browser abstraction missing in Ubuntu 12.04 upgrade

2012-05-01 Thread agent 8131
Public bug reported:

I've had this happen on 2 or 3 systems upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04. The
file:

/etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/ubuntu-browsers.d/chromium-browser

will be missing leading to problems with apparmor like this:

# aa-logprof
Reading log entries from /var/log/syslog.
Updating AppArmor profiles in /etc/apparmor.d.

Can't find include file abstractions/ubuntu-browsers.d/chromium-browser:
No such file or directory

#

I found this could be fixed by running:

# apt-get install --reinstall apparmor-profiles

[Bug 940030] [NEW] rsyslog stops working after logrotate until restarted

2012-02-23 Thread agent 8131
Public bug reported:

This could otherwise be titled, rsyslog reload does not create log
files; only restart does.

This is happening on a number of machines I work on. It's happening on
10.04 and 11.04. It might be similar to:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rsyslog/+bug/407862

But in my case after the restart there is no /var/log/syslog being
created, nor auth.log, kern.log, etc. The files are rotated, rsyslog is
reloaded, and none of the log files are created and nothing is being
logged. This has been plaguing my systems since moving from syslog-ng,
which I may return to as it seems it was actually production ready.

Without manually restarting those files don't exist so here's what I did
on an 11.04 system:

logrotate --force --verbose /etc/logrotate.conf

gives:

rotating pattern: /var/log/syslog
forced from command line (7 rotations)
empty log files are not rotated, old logs are removed
considering log /var/log/syslog
log /var/log/syslog does not exist -- skipping
not running postrotate script, since no logs were rotated

rotating pattern: /var/log/mail.info
/var/log/mail.warn
/var/log/mail.err
/var/log/mail.log
/var/log/daemon.log
/var/log/kern.log
/var/log/auth.log
/var/log/user.log
/var/log/lpr.log
/var/log/cron.log
/var/log/debug
/var/log/messages
forced from command line (4 rotations)
empty log files are not rotated, old logs are removed
considering log /var/log/mail.info
log /var/log/mail.info does not exist -- skipping
considering log /var/log/mail.warn
log /var/log/mail.warn does not exist -- skipping
considering log /var/log/mail.err

not running postrotate script, since no logs were rotated

Then
/sbin/reload rsyslog
logger -i testing

At this point there is no /var/log/syslog

Then:
/sbin/restart rsyslog

And voila there is a /var/log/syslog beginning with:

Feb 23 19:24:48 somehost kernel: imklog 4.6.4, log source = /proc/kmsg started.
Feb 23 19:24:48 somehost rsyslogd: [origin software=rsyslogd

Feb 23 19:24:48 somehost rsyslogd: rsyslogd's userid changed to 108

Then to recreate:

logrotate --force --verbose /etc/logrotate.conf

[Bug 883464] Re: remmina fills up ~/.xsession-errors when network connection is lost

2012-01-06 Thread agent 8131
What is the effect of this command?

This says overwrite this file with nothing.

The link should stay there; this does not remove the file, only
truncates its contents.

the file got small, but became big again after some time

You may want to run killall remmina first to stop remmina from
continuing to fill the file.

[Bug 484336] Re: /etc/rsyslog.conf permissions incorrect/missing for creation of dynamic files

2011-12-22 Thread agent 8131
I ran into this today. If I understand correctly the privilege drop
happens before the chown though it should be the other way around, the
chown should happen while root and then privileges should be dropped.
And in any case the failure of chown should not prevent the logs from
writing. The solution seems to be that $FileGroup and $PrivDropToGroup
should match. From a security perspective setting $FileGroup to to
syslog is the safest course of action.

[Bug 870138] Re: .xsession-errors fills hard drive until system crashes

2011-12-20 Thread agent 8131
The horribly bad thing about this bug as people have probably noticed is
that trying to delete the .xsession-errors file will not recover the
free space. This is due to how linux/unix handles deletions through
unlink such that the space is not freed until the every process with a
file handle to that file has been terminated. In the case of .xsession-
errors it means the user has to log off or restart in order for that to
happen. The solution I found was to open a terminal and run:

echo ~/.xsession-errors

[Bug 883464] Re: remmina fills up ~/.xsession-errors when network connection is lost

[Bug 883464] Re: remmina fills up ~/.xsession-errors when network connection is lost

However, if you have tried to delete the file and do need to free the
space without logging out or restarting, for example when you have open
documents that need saving and there is no more free disk space this
should work:

find /proc/*/fd -type l -lname '*.xsession-errors*' 2 /dev/null

this will give you a list of filenames like:
/proc/12345/fd/1
/proc/54321/fd/2

You should be able to use any filename in that list and do:
echo /proc/12345/fd/1

Where /proc/12345/fd/1 is replaced by one of those filenames.

I agree that splitting it into yet another package would be silly.
Perhaps I should have been more clear. By removing the dependency I
meant changing it from Depends to Recommends which seems to be the
correct relationship as it is clearly not an absolute relationship.

Since this user is installing from source it's not a problem with the

[Bug 892897] [NEW] smplayer exits with error in 11.10

2011-11-20 Thread agent 8131
Public bug reported:

This is related to bug #878815 which describes a bug in mplayer. When
this bug is present it prevents smaplyer from working. As soon as
smplayer tries to play anything it reports the error about
ff_codec_bmp_tags. However, I've noticed that gnome-mplayer does not
seem affect by this bug while smplayer is. Perhaps it is just an
smplayer option but no amount of option changes has gotten smplayer to
work in 11.10 for me. In any case, smplayer should be able to work
around this mplayer bug like gnome-mplayer.

[Bug 849672] Re: make libvirt trivial to backport to lucid

The latest version in oneiric is 0.9.2-4ubuntu13. The latest version
you have backported is 0.9.2-4ubuntu6. I was actually trying to make
your life easier since your more recent backports have failed to build
on lucid and maverick:

Seems like if supporting ludic was any sort of priority for developers
than making minor changes to current packages to facilitate easier

Yes, that makes sense that you would not want revert the dh_python2
support. I filed a bug a while ago requesting the backporting of
dh_python2 to lucid for this reason. It would certainly be preferable
to use dh_python2 in lucid for the backport. If this was the case,
would the original request be re-examined? If all you had to do was
change 2 lines of the control file to facilitate easier backporting
would that be worthwhile?

[Bug 849672] [NEW] make libvirt trivial to backport to lucid

2011-09-13 Thread agent 8131
Public bug reported:

While libvirt can be backported to natty without changes in order to
backport to maverick or lucid requires some minor changes. It would be
nice, given how often this package has been updated, to make a no change
backport possible, especially for lucid. I have not prepared a debdiff
because in my backports I usually simple disable macvtap support as I do
not need it however for a proper solution macvtap support should be
detected and set in the rules file accordingly. Here are the other
changes, from my notes:

* control build depends - change cdbs version
* control build depends - change python-dev version
* control build depends - add python-support
* control X-Python-Version from 2.7 to current
* rules add DEB_PYTHON_SYSTEM = pysupport

I came across this bug as I was going to report a bug that the -server
and -virtual kernels conflict in lucid. I can see that this conflict is
still necessary as of 2.6.32-33:

image-2.6.32-33-virtual/filelist

I have noted that this was fixed in later releases (maverick, natty).
So maybe that will help anyone who comes across this bug report down the
road as I did.

[Bug 798583] [NEW] xen-utils-4.1 does not have pvgrub

2011-06-17 Thread agent 8131
Public bug reported:

Like the debian package the ubuntu version does not build and package
pvgrub. Granted, building pvgrub is a pain in the ass but it still
should be done.

[Bug 509180] Re: ecryptfs sometimes seems to add trailing garbage to encrypted files

2011-06-17 Thread agent 8131
I found this to be helpful for finding the corrupted files. They may
not be 0 length:

find . -type f -exec cat {} \; /dev/null

and look for Input/output error

[Bug 794378] [NEW] sync to newer version on libvirt for Ubuntu 11.10

2011-06-07 Thread agent 8131
Public bug reported:

It would be nice to see 0.9.2 in Ubuntu 11.10 but at the very least it
should ship with 0.9.0 which is a significant upgrade from 0.8.8.
Debian has backported 0.9.0 to Debian 6 for this reason. 0.9.1 is in
Debian unstable.

[Bug 550409] Re: Slow disk IO for all guests with all disc modes and types.

2011-06-01 Thread agent 8131
People should be aware that cache=writeback should only be used if you
do not care about the very real possibility of guest disk corruption
should the guest or host fail unexpectedly. Given that there is no
facility for shutting down guests cleanly on host shutdown one should be
very wary of risking their guest data for anything important.

[Bug 627740] Re: Qwit no longer works

2011-06-01 Thread agent 8131
Qwit works again in Ubuntu 11.04. I'd suggest anyone using older
versions try to use the deb from 11.04 and not from elsewhere on the
web.

[Bug 378240] Re: Please merge xen 4.0.1-2 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2011-06-01 Thread agent 8131
For anyone that's interested I've packaged Xen 4.1.0 and 4.0.1 for
Ubuntu. So far I've only released on 10.04 but I hope the debs will
work for other Ubunutu versions, and Debian as well. My strategy was to
create a package that duplicated the Xen install without all the extra
packaging done by the Ubuntu and Debian packages. I've also catered to
my needs, so at the moment no SDL and no pvgrub. Still it's a lot
easier than compiling Xen on every single server. You can find them
here:

https://launchpad.net/~agent-8131/+archive/ppa

They seem to work well with the Debian 6.0 Xen kernel.

[Bug 785681] Re: Unable to unblank screen, cursor still present

2011-05-31 Thread agent 8131
This bug report looks like what I have experienced on my system. I want
to distinguish this from other bug reports about blank screens or blank
screens. With this bug the entire screen is black but the cursor is
still visible and the desktop still works. I have only had this happen
after leaving the computer for an extended period though it doesn't
happen every time I leave the computer for an extended period. The
screensaver has activated and the desktop has locked. When this
happened this morning I was able to verify that despite no login box
being visible I was able to log in and my mouse cursor reflected my
desktop contents (namely that the cursor changed to reflect the google
map that had been on my desktop the night before). This is using gnome
classic with effects and I believe it to be a bug with the Intel video
driver. This bug may be misdiagnosed as people may not realize their
desktop is still responsive.

This is not the same as bugs 780653 or 762918 as they have been reported
though some people commenting to those bugs may actually have this
issue. This issue may also be related to those issues.

I mean to try the following suggestions next time:

sudo pkill X

or

sudo killall -w -s KILL compiz
DISPLAY=:0.0 compiz --replace
