GNOME has its own l10n.gnome.org, some important projects use translationproject.org, etc., etc. * Translations should be made through Launchpad: 1. when Launchpad is upstream with respect to translations 2. for Ubuntu specific packages and projects 3. for packages where the bulk of the translations are fetched from upstream, but where Ubuntu specific patches add translatable strings. With that said, and to still give you a hint about the volume for Ubuntu specifically, let's look at this page: https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/ (click the "View all languages" link to get an overview) That page indicates 350,000+ translatable strings. But as Ask Hjorth Larsen pointed out, you probably want to prioritize and focus on the most visible strings for desktop users. OTOH, there are for instance Firefox, Thunderbird and LibreOffice which are installed by default while their translations are not present in the Launchpad translation interface, but handled elsewhere. Call for testing: langpack updates for 22.04.2
Hello translators! I'm here again with a plea to help with testing new language packs. 22.04.2 is scheduled to be released in less than 2 weeks, and today is about time for the usual point-release language-pack updates. Updated language packs are available in jammy-proposed as version 1:22.04+20230209. They will be moved to jammy-updates on 2023-02-17 for all languages except those languages where we identify issues with the proposed language packs. As a prevention measure you can help out by installing the language packs for your language from jammy-proposed and report here any issues you see which might be related to the updated translations. Then the language-packs for that language won't be moved to jammy-updates until the issues have been considered and/or resolved. The names of the language packs which have been copied to jammy-proposed are: language-pack-XX language-pack-XX-base language-pack-gnome-XX language-pack-gnome-XX-base where 'XX' is the language code. The purpose of a manual test is to make sure that the system keeps working normally and that there are no noticeable translation errors which stand out. So basically: log in into an Ubuntu desktop session and make sure that the core features behave as expected. Example check points: * Open the Activities overview, enter some search terms (for example home, netw, update). * Check the menu on the top right of the screen. * Start the file browser (Files>Home Folder). Check your home folder location, the menu items and the side bar. * Start Update Manager: check out it runs and has sensible UI. If you find issues, please report them here by 2023-02-16. Since this time of the cycle is optimal — we are well beyond both UserInterfaceFreeze[1] and DocumentationStringFreeze[2] — to provide translations via Launchpad, I wanted to post this heads-up. Two deadlines apply: 1. NonLanguagePackTranslationDeadline[3]: April 7 Some packages, for which the translations are not dealt with via the language packs, need special translation updates via package uploads. Examples here are ubiquity, ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu (multiple translation templates), and ubuntu-docs[4]. 2. LanguagePackTranslationDeadline[5]: April 14 This is the same date as Final Freeze. Translations added to most packages in Ubuntu's "main" until this date will be available to the users on the release day (April 21). This looks weird to me. I just wanted to check with you. Apparently you looked at language-pack-oc and language-pack-gnome-oc. But this is a full language pack update, so those packages are basically empty both before and after the update. The actual changes are done to language-pack-oc-base and language-pack-gnome-oc-base. Hello translators! I'm here again with a plea to help with testing new language packs. Updated language packs are available in focal-proposed as version 1:20.04+20220211. They will be moved to focal-updates on 2022-02-17 for all languages except those languages where we identify issues with the proposed language packs. As a prevention measure you can help out by installing the language packs for your language from focal-proposed and report here any issues you see which might be related to the updated translations. Then the language-packs for that language won't be moved to focal-updates until the issues have been considered and/or resolved. The names of the language packs which have been copied to focal-proposed are: language-pack-XX language-pack-XX-base language-pack-gnome-XX language-pack-gnome-XX-base where 'XX' is the language code. The purpose of a manual test is to make sure that the system keeps working normally and that there are no noticeable translation errors which stand out. So basically: log in into an Ubuntu desktop session and make sure that the core features behave as expected. Example check points: * Open the Activities overview, enter some search terms (for example home, netw, update). * Check the menu on the top right of the screen. * Start the file browser (Files>Home Folder). It means that translatable strings in the default packages for the desktop and applications won't change unless "absolutely necessary". Possible exceptions will be announced here and need to be approved by the release team. So this is a good time to take a look at the Ubuntu translations. The NonLanguagePackTranslationDeadline [1] is on September 30, and the LanguagePackTranslationDeadline [2] is on October 7. Let me take this opportunity to mention the highly visible Ubuntu Software. If we want this to work at the release of 21.10, I think it's highly
desirable to make the changes early in the cycle to be able to test.
Generating the files is easy and having a process that automatizes it
isn't complicated, but I would like how this can be handled. >

Heads-up about new package for desktop icon support
Hi Translators! For 21.04 the desktop team has replaced the previous desktop icons gnome extension with an improved one: Desktop Icons NG. It brings some rather visible translatable strings, but since it's a new project, there are quite a few untranslated strings at the moment, and many languages are missing. To add translations upstream, you currently need to propose a new or changed PO file as a merge request (<https://gitlab.com/rastersoft/desktop-icons-ng>). But to improve it for the upcoming Ubuntu 21.04 release, you can use the Launchpad interface: https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons-ng The package name is gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons-ng and the name of the translation domain is ding. Well, what can I say? TBH I don't think that our procedures give
translators any veto power. The bug is implicitly an UIFe request, and
the decision lies with the release team. With that said, it's important
that info about late translatable strings are brought to the
translators, and that's done with your message.
Btw, isn't there an unusually large number of late translatable strings
this cycle?

Hi Aliaksandr, and sorry for late reply. Thanks for reviving the efforts to translate Ubuntu into Belarusian! There is a problem with the name of your team, since it uses the country code "by" instead of the language code "be". You may think that I'm nitpicking now, but it may be of some significance. If, for instance, I see a bug report about some Belarusian translation issue, I will likely want to assign it to your team. So I go to <https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-l10n-be> but find that the page does not exist. To avoid that kind of confusion going forward, and use the same naming scheme as other Ubuntu translators teams, I would recommend that you consider to rename it to ~ubuntu-l10n-be. That would of course mean that some links would need to be changed, but I think it may be worth that effort. As regards the team coordinator, that's up to the team and/or the Belarus team to decide upon. You know better than me if there are any local procedures in place for that decision. As long as it works, the Ubuntu Translations Coordinators team has no reason to interfere. So it sounds to me as if you are the new coordinator already. Congrats. :) From my POV it's important that at least one active team member, including the coordinator, is subscribed to this mailing list. Announcements and calls for testing related to translations of Ubuntu will be posted here. This list may also serve as a HUB for cooperating with other translators teams. Some notes which may be relevant to mention since you are new: * Most of the translation of Ubuntu actually happens upstream (GNOME, Debian, etc.). It's important that you cooperate closely with other Belarusian FOSS translators, to avoid duplication of efforts. * Some packages have their home and should be translated at Launchpad. * Some upstream packages are modified in Ubuntu, and to the extent the modifications include translatable strings, they need to be translated at Launchpad even if the rest of those packages are translated elsewhere. * Please keep an eye on the release schedule for respective cycle, e.g. <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EoanErmine/ReleaseSchedule>.
