Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Plastic Box Which Plays Noises

2013-04-09 Thread bakker_be

Just put R1 on my Wandboard. Web interface for WLAN-configuration didn't
seem to do what it needed to do (yes, I did use the Save and
reboot-button) but I used Putty to ssh in and checked if the settings
were correctly applied. ESSID WPA-PSK key were present, so I did what
you describe in the very first post (ifdown + ifup) and WLAN is working
now.
Had to google around a bit to find how to mount my Windows share to
actually get some music into the server, but now it's happily scanning,
Squeezelite is visible on my network and sees both LMS servers, my other
players also see the Wandboard server.
So far so good :) All in all a painless installation procedure, well
within reach of this Linux almost illiterate ;)
If you need localisation to Dutch or French, I volunteer.

2013-04-10 Thread bakker_be

Take your time. The way this thing is running it doesn't need to be
rebooted :)
I've turned it into a copy of my Windows 2008 R2 server, installing the
Spicefly Sugarcube plugin, pointing it at the MusicIP server I've got
running there, switched all players to it, and they're all running
perfectly, synced and all.
When I have some more time this weekend it'll get hooked up to the
stereo and I'll try to install the MusicIP server from the tarball still
available at Amplifind. If that works I'll turn it into a totally
self-contained server by transferring all music to some kind of external
USB disk, which will give me the opportunity to finally upgrade my
server to Windows Server 2012, add a HP SAS expander and another 9 TB to
the current 17 TB. The anticipation is killing me :)

Sorry if this is a newbie question (I admit I am, concerning linux, only
experience is several versions of Ubuntu, all GUI stuff) but I'm trying
to achieve what JackOfAll described in the first post of the original
thread, getting the Squeezeserver cache onto a USB stick. I've already
managed to get it formatted as ext4, mounted as
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache, my music share (cifs) is mounted also.
Both are also remounted automagically on reboot, so I think I've done
rather well already, but now Squeezeserver gives me the below output on
the Web-GUI. What am I doing wrong or what did I forget to do. Thanks
for your patience.

Not that I doubt you, but why is the web gui telling us that ALSA will
default to 16-bit. (found some time to continue the translation, or I
wouldn't have known ;))

By default on the Wandboard, the sgtl5000 codec is configured as the
audio device, and the player name is set to SqueezeliteWAND
If the selected Audio Device name contains the string, sgtl5000, and
the Alsa Params field is left unpopulated, a default value of 40::16:
will be submitted to the squeezelite config file, forcing the output of
16 bit audio. Althought the sgtl5000 codec is 24 bit capable, at the
present time it results in distorted sound. Please be aware that once
this value has been set and saved, it will remain if you change the
selected Audio Device. So if you choose another device which is 24 bit
capable, before saving, remember to delete the contents of the Alsa
 Params field.

I was just worried that connecting another Audio Device after having
used the internal sgtl5000 it would also be forced to 16-bit. That's the
way I understood the part you quoted.

You do indeed use Putty, towards the IP address. User = fedora, pwd =

Hi, the mount point is indeed where you want it to appear. Best is to
pick an empty directory for it, as you won't be able to see what's
already there anymore without unmounting your music share. I picked
/storage/media/audio /storage/media/playlists.

I'm not really too good at writing instructions, you've done a way
better job than I could, so I'd say you do it yourself and document it

I've had to comment out the line in fstab, reboot the WB without the

reboot the WB, move the files back over to the now mounted stick to

WInSCP, that sounds great for simplifying the copying process.

 CW

You have indeed oversimplified it, in that there are files inside that
directory that are needed for LMS to even start up, that's before any
scanning has ever taken place. My first tentative at running LMS was
without a stick and I found an 11hr scantime to be a bit excessive.
That's why I tried to replicate what JackOfAll hinted at in his first
post on the old thread. I didn't even bother to do a ls in that
directory, figuring that, since you can simply delete the cache files on
Windows and LMS recreates them, it would do the same on Fedora. WRONG
... ;)
In short: even for a brand new installation you must first make the copy
and put it back in place before starting LMS.

Maybe the overall physical size of the library is a factor too? I've got
around 1.5 TB of music, it's all quite extensively tagged and cover art
is as large as I can find. MusicIP (only mixable status) SmartMix are
activated as well.
I don't say that there cannot be anything wrong with my scanning
process, I'd even say there is, as the Wandboard LMS sees around 4000
less tracks than my Windows box ... Even so, the difference in going
from 11hrs to 2 hours is (for me at least) irrefutable.

Hi there,
I'm still on R3, and since updating Squeezelite to the latest version
I'm noticing some strange behaviour. I've got a Squeezeplay-computer in
my kitchen that's synced with the Wandboard, which is connected to my
stereo by HDMI. They're both set to power on/of together and resume
playing. If I start the player in my kitchen without switching on the
amp connected to the wandboard I can't get the music to play correctly:
it plays for around 30 seconds, tries to rebuffer, flashes a message on
the screen that rebuffering failed and starts over.
Is this behaviour normal, have I discovered a bug or should I first
upgrade to R4 and try again ...

being less dire in other genres ...

Alternatively, and much easier, is to use a regular 'HDMI display'

Somewhat cheaper, better resolution than the Lilliput screen:

I suppose that people who are using or will be using the CSOS player
will have an alternative way to control the player. Most people have
smartphones today and will use that as the remote. I'm pretty sure that
most people won't like the fact that you need a TV or external monitor
 switched on.
Personally, I use iPeng / SqueezePad on various iThings. But I also have
a Flirc dongle for the quick actions (press pause when the phone
rings, press next when there is a song I don't like, etc). I honestly
rarely use jivelite, apart from the initial configuration purposes
 (enable TriggerOutput for example).

So maybe jivelite should only have the now playing screen(s) and a
settings menu. It still can accept input for the basic player functions
(play, pause, power, etc) to be used with a Flirc dongle. I fear that
things will get too user unfriendly when trying to implement complex
functions like search with a simple ir remote.
 What are your thoughts?

That would be similar to the way I use my SB Touch as well. I mainly
start a random play of 1 song, using a Logitech Harmony 525 remote,
after which Spicefly Sugarcube takes over. Picking specific music for
intense listening is either through the web interface or through one
of various smartphone/tablet apps ...

On a different subject: I tried the upsampling, but to me it's not
really a success. It's probably some user error, so I'll explain the
situation so somebody can point me in the right direction ;)

- Wandboard is connected through HDMI to my Marantz Receiver
- ALSA Params are empty, except for an ending 0
- Upsampling checkbox is ticked, nothing entered into the textbox

I can see upsampling works, as my Marantz indicates a 176.4 sampling
rate, but the sound is really thin and distant compared to the default
...

As a sidenote: I seem to find that the soundquality of the wandboard
connected through HDMI SBT connected analog SBT connected through
SPDIF in my system.

you mount a NFS share from another 'nix box, mount a Windows (cifs)
share (Windows or exported via samba), plug in a USB drive, (which is
most likely going to be formatted either NTFS or extX), or possibly
least likely for storing music, use the SATA header.

The question is, how many people are mounting a remote Windows share?

I'm using a Windows share, and will probably continue to do so, as my
whole home network is Windows Active Directory based. Nothing against
Linux, it's just that I know Windows best ...
On the other hand, as long as I can get access via SSH I can do the
mounting from command-line, no need to spend time on a GUI for that ;)

without the stick, create a directory in the fedora-user's homefolder,
copy the files over, uncomment the line in fstab, disable LMS, replug
the stick, reboot the WB, move the files back over to the now mounted
stick to finally enable and start LMS. To do the whole file copying
stuff I've used WinSCP, but made the connection using the root user,
pwd by default is also fedora. Especially for Windows-users this is
a lot easier, as it gives you a familiar explorer interface.

I finally got around implementing a shutdown button. It is based on the
script gib8 created but I modified it slightly. The hardware is a bit
different too. I use a delayed button; you have to press and hold it for
about 2 seconds before it kicks in.

The hardware consists of just a few components:

As mentioned, I slightly modified gib8Â’s script and called it
*csos-shutdown*. It is located in */usr/sbin* and contains the
 following:

Code:

   #!/bin/bash

   sudo echo in /sys/class/gpio/gpio91/direction
   sudo echo out /sys/class/gpio/gpio200/direction
   sudo echo 1 /sys/class/gpio/gpio200/value

   i=`cat /sys/class/gpio/gpio91/value`
   if [ $i -eq 1 ]
   then
   sudo echo 0 /sys/class/gpio/gpio200/value
   sleep 0.5
   sudo echo 1 /sys/class/gpio/gpio200/value
   sleep 0.5
   sudo echo 0 /sys/class/gpio/gpio200/value
   sleep 0.5
   sudo echo 1 /sys/class/gpio/gpio200/value
   sleep 0.5
   sudo echo 0 /sys/class/gpio/gpio200/value
   sleep 0.5
   sudo echo 1 /sys/class/gpio/gpio200/value
   sleep 0.5
   sudo echo 0 /sys/class/gpio/gpio200/value
   sudo shutdown -h now
   break
   fi
   sleep 1
   done

This script needs to be executable, so run the command *chmod 777
 csos-shutdown*

Next, create a service file called *shutdown.service* located in *
 /etc/systemd/system*
The shutdown.service file contains the following:

Code:

   [Unit]
   Description=Shutdown Switch

   [Service]
   ExecStart=/usr/sbin/csos-shutdown
   Type=idle

   [Install]
   WantedBy=multi-user.target

Then enable the service: *systemctl enable shutdown.service* and
 reboot the system.

How does it work: press and hold the button (about two seconds) until
the LED starts to blink. Allow about 30 seconds (to be sure) to let
the WB shutdown safely before removing the power.

Hi, could you add detailed instructions on how to do this to your
msqueeze-page. To me it seems to be the missing link for implementing
a wandboard in my car :) Does it also allow for powering on? Does the
wandboard have some kind of suspend-mode, to accelerate waking up

My understanding is that the required LIRC code is now part of the
kernel so it should work with F20 with out much trouble. However with
F19 I'm not at all clear as that uses a much older kernel, which
probably does not include the LIRC stuff, and would likely require some
 effort.

As far as Johns hardware goes, I believe he is making GPIO pins
available on the board, but not sure if this will include the pins used
as standard for LIRC, although I think this can be configured to use
other pins, so that is not likely an insurmountable problem.

Be warned, however - even if the right pins are available and the LIRC
code in place, it still takes quite a bit of effort to set up, as you
need to program LIRC for the particular remote you want to use, which
can be fiddly, and then define the actions of the buttons.

If you want a cheap solution and have the patience, this might be a good
option. Otherwise stick to FLIRC - it so much simpler :D (and cost less
 than a cheap dinner out).

It's not the price, it's the elegance and hence the WAF of the thing ;)

This is not directed at you Castalla, or not at you specifically.
There hasn't been a week gone by where I don't get asked, are you (or
can you) support this ARM hardware.

We support the Wandboard. Yes, it's not the only imx6 game in town. If
you can get CS stuff running on another imx6 device, good for you! Will
it work out of the box? I don't know, I haven't tried it.

Same goes with possibly adding support for AllWinner. It'll be on that
basis, that we can say with certainty that it works on this specific
device. I can't say about some other device that I don't own.

People need to be aware, that stuff doesn't just work out of the box.
There are always some foibles that need to be dealt with. Whether it's
the random generation of ethernet MAC address, every boot, on these
Cubieboard devices or something else. Right now, I'm looking at what
needs to happen with the IR driver (the Cubietruck has an IR receiver on
board) to make it support a Squeezebox remote on initial boot. My
expectation, at first look at how the driver is implemented, was great,
can load a keymap from rc.local. Then on closer examination, it appears
not to use the usual run-time mechanism, need to edit a header file
with the mapping and re-compile the module.

The point is this, that while it's possible to make anything work on
anything, given time and resource, things don't just work. I'm never
going to say, this works on that, unless I have actually done it myself.
It's the whole reason I am sitting on my hands over supporting the BBB.
Do I know CSOS F20 works on the BBWhite? Hell, yes! Should there be any
issues... Well, on paper, a faster CPU and double the RAM. Why should
that cause an issue, right? Until I have a BBB in my hands..

And the frustrating thing for me, I look at the TP Cape thread this
morning... Control the ES9018 via I2C from the driver. That's new, isn't
it?. But I was here 6 months ago, with a TP Buffalo connected to a
Wandboard via I2S and controlling it via ALSA mixer controls which then
communicate with the DAC via I2C. LOL.

I am massively frustrated that we appear to be going backwards, while
 others are going forwards.

Hi, I believe that while you, Triode, John and any others I'm not aware
of are massively talented at doing what you do, you just don't have the
kind of technically able community here that you do the other forum,
blocking you from going forward by having to hold people like me
(relative Linux newbies) by the hand. Example in case: this morning for
some obscure reason LMS doesn't start anymore. I did some searching,
couldn't find anything, am now reimaging my SD card. If I'd not been
aware you're going through all kinds of stuff at the moment with the
repo, I'd have been here to ask support, making you loose valuable time,
and I guess I'm far from the only one.
Maybe it's time to get this project up on the other forum as well?

Just a quick heads-up maybe, concerning the R7 image. I've finally had
some time to listen to some music since re-imaging earlier this week,
and it seems to me that the choice for HDMI doesn't automatically
disable MMAP anymore. At least I can't remember specifically enabling it
after switching from the SGTL5000, but after some time I got garbled
sound. Restarting squeezelite solved it for some time, but it always
came back. Searching the CSOS homepage led me to MMAP, deactivated it,
no more worries.
I don't know how many use the R7 image with HDMI output for sound, but
it's worth looking into IMO.
Another thing I found: the character to specify an administrative
CIFS-share has changed to the Microsoft default $. On the previous
installation (R???) I had to provide *. Makes it easier for people
coming from Windows (as I do), but I'd backed up my fstab, so it errored
out on that line of course :p

Will somebody explain what to solder where?? Will it be difficult, or
within reach of a novice?

OK, let me stamp on this *NOW*. This is not just directed at you bakker,
 so please don't take personally.

USB is plug and play. RCA jacks, analogue out is plug and play. I2S is
 not plug and play.

If you don't know the what and why, you're setting yourself up for a
 whole lot of pain.

IMHO, (and this is directed at you specifically), you should head where
you were heading. Get that Curryman DAC, (which IIRC correctly is ES9023
with async clock and buffer output), get it working with a USB to I2S
interface. Put it in a nice case. Use at least a linear reg power
supply. At some point later on, down the road, you can look at feeding
it directly with I2S. Maybe put a TP teleporter sender in the WB plastic
case, add a receiver to your standalone DAC, link them with a hdmi
 cable.

There are bodies buried all over the place. With the BeagleboneBlack.
(Which is fresh in my mind as it is sitting in front of me right now.)
Easy 2.54mm headers, but the BBB has a crap standard clock and can
only do 48k multiples. The Cubietruck requires SMT soldering. The WB
 requires SMT soldering.

I'm going to draw the line on the software side. Is the software able to
provide an I2S output. 16, 24, and 32 bit I2S output. Tick. Line in the
sand. Zero support from that point onwards. You want to interface with
this DAC. Good luck with that. ;)

I could rattle off a list of DAC chips I've already interfaced via I2S
to one of these ARM devices. Since we just touched on the Curryman DAC,
I could start telling you that I've used ES9023 in async with external
osc, and sync, 4 wire with MCLK from board, but there is absolutely zero
chance of me documenting it. I'm hopeful that there will be a couple of
people, with the software side of things sorted, who have the knowledge
and experience, to provide a HOWTO with this specific DAC board and ARM
board. Something that people with lesser experience can follow and end
up with a working solution. But again, not going to be me. My priority
is going to be the CS hardware as soon as the F20 images are out there.

Not taken personally at all, please note I stressed the theoretical
part ;) I'm not planning on doing any difficult soldering, it's been
more than 20 years since I touched a soldering iron, and that was easy
stuff: passive loudspeaker cross-overs. I think combining the two parts
I mentioned elsewhere will be quite challenging enough for my skills,
and even that is still a far-off project as the PSU-part is not clear at
all to me, but that's better discussed in it's own thread.

No one is being left high and dry. You guys that have purchased
Wandboard hardware, you have them working right? You have an image on
them, right? They are playing music, right? The F19 images are available
from my vacuumtube site, right? Where is the problem?

You want to talk about John's hardware, talk to John. I have written a
driver. It is dependent on a device tree kernel and F20, which is why
John doesn't have it yet. I've made 2x DVD's for Triode, containing the
complete CS software repo and all the images, historic, (all the way
back to PBWN), and the unreleased F20 images. It includes the compose
scripts to create new images. What he chooses to release. Nothing to do

OK, point taken. We'll refrain from further questions. Thanks for the

The best we can do at the moment IMHO is to encourage JackOfAll to
continue participating in the Community Squeeze related discussions in
the forum, he is probably one of the most experienced people in the
 area.
I can only speak for myself of course, but I think most of us are quite
willing to donate some money, hardware, whatever to enable the people
behind this whole project to at least continue without too much, or just
maybe even no financial loss. Having been an independent entrepreneur
myself I'm quite aware that whatever donations we make will never
completely cover al hours spent on this. Let's just hope that the
pricing they'll eventually set for the hardware is sufficiently
attractive to be affordable to us out here, but at the same time
lucrative enough to continue making it worth their while. Maybe some
kind of Kickstarter thing would be helpful?
I know I'm still quite eagerly awaiting John's hardware.
