[SlimDevices: Unix] pCP, Jivelite, touchscreen and HDMI video output
Dear All, I am running pCP on a RPi3 + official touch LCD display. Everything is PERFECT. Days ago I connected an additional monitor using the HDMI output and I do not get video signal. I do not want to use HDMI ad audio output at all, but just video, let me say to duplicate what I am getting on the LCD display. Is it possible? steff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66870 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109774 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Well... I know quite well what a real time kernel is. You could eventually say: ask to google, search the forum, etc. and this would be acceptable. Go back to my question: I was not asking what is a real time kernel system, rather I was asking the differences (if any) versus the "old" Audio Optimized version. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] LMS start\stop\restart
Dears, trying to find how to restart LMS, I got this "solution". In the pCP TWEAKS page, I put two commands: User commands User command #1 sudo killall slimserver.pl User command #2 /usr/bin/perl /usr/local/slimserver/slimserver.pl --daemon --user tc --group staff In this way, at the boot, LMS is started by the normal procedure, then LMS is stopped and then restarted. I got the startup command looking at the processes running. The above procedure WORKS!!! Now finally I have internet radios available, but... there is another little problem... if I visit the pCP web GUI, I see LMS stopped, even if everything seems running correctly. This is the difference: when LMS is started by pCP boot process, this is the running process {slimserver.pl} /usr/bin/perl /usr/local/slimserver/slimserver.pl --daemon --user tc --group staff when the process is killed and then restarted, I get this new running process /usr/bin/perl /usr/local/slimserver/slimserver.pl --daemon --user tc --group staff any suggestion? steff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66870 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108549 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] LMS start\stop\restart
No... radio will not show even waiting days... until I restart LMS and Jivelite I am using the software as it comes from the official distribution. Yes,,, telnetting the Rpi3, I can confirm it gest IP and DNS and gateway, etc. Yes... 1 interface at a time... it happens even with just the wired Eth and internal WiFi disabled my Internet provider is Vodafone and I have a proprietary modem\router. I can not change the configuration, so... if DHCP is enabled on a device, it gets as DNS the IP address of the router (same as gateway). In order to override the default DNS, i have to put it into the device. I already tried, but seems that using the pCP web interface I can just forse the static IP on the wired Ethernet and not on the WiFi. Question 1) How to force a static IP and DNS using the WLAN? Question 2, for SBP) what have I to write in the tweaks page to restart the LMS and to restart Jivelite? (if I just restart LMS, I can play radios from the web interface, but no radio icon on the LCD screen... I need to restart the Jivelite too) My best regards. steff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66870 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108549 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Looking at the LCD screen during the boot, I can perfectly see that together the IP address, the DHCP correctly assign the ip of the DNS server, after that mouts the NAS, then starts the LMS. This afternoon I got a new Rpi3 to be used for VPN terminator at my home and I tested a brand new setup of pCP. I got the very same behaviour. Supposing my problems can come from my home network, I got a mobile WiFi hotspot. I configured the Rpi3 to connect to the WiFi provided by the hotspot and... IT WORKS !!! Radio available!!! The problem is that I have a huge number of devices @ my home working on my network without any issue (Playstation, TV, Sky box, iPad, Samsung smartphones and tablet, two HP Proliant servers, the alarm system, etc) So I can not confirm it is problem of my switches and router... pobably a problem of "inter-compatibility" between the Rpi3+pCP+my network. suggestios? steff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66870 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108549 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Looking at the log, when my Ri3 boots, it first connect to the network (yes, WiFi), it gets the IP address from the DHCP where is its reservation, THEN LMS starts. So... Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] help: pCP on Rpi3 and DSD
Solved. in the Squeezelite settings there is Output device supports DSD over PCM (DoP) (-D) delay = optional delay switching between PCM and DoP in ms. Note: LMS requires the DoP patch applied. This is what I understood 1) Without adding the DSDPlayer plugin, no way to play DSD files 2) Just adding the DSDPlayer plugin lets you play DSD files that will be converted by pCP to PCM (in my case 352 kHz) My DSC displays PCM 352 3) adding any value in the above SqueezeLite setting will make pCP avoid to convert and the same DSD files are played correctly My DAC displays DoP DSD 2.8M Is everything correct? steff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66870 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108257 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Yes I see this, but... my DAC natively supports PCM 352 and DSD 11 Mhz. using JRiver and disabling all the internals audio engines: - if I play a PCM, the DAC displays ORIGINAL (it means no internal processing) and PCM. It means the original source PCM is played with no manipulation by the DAC - if I play a DSD, the DAC displays OROGINAL and DSD - if I set JRiver to bitstream to DoP, the DAC disaplays DoP and DSD, meaning it receives a DoP signal that is then extracted to DSD Playing the very same DSD file with pCP, the DAC displays ORIGINAL and PCM !!! it means the DAC is not receiving a DoP signal, but a real PCM. Seems that somewhere pCP takes the DSD and convert it into PCM, not DSD over PCM, but real PCM. steff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66870 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108257 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BitPerfect
Talking about "bitperfect", I would like to ask a question to you. If we take different devices labeled as "bitperfect", I suppose that there should not be any difference among them. I mean... no difference in the bitstream delivered... is this sentence correct? Since I am playing around this matters since years, some days ago i got an OTG USB cable and connected my DACs to a Sony Experia Z1 Android smartphone where I installed "USB Audio Player PRO". Everything is played from a NAS and it works well even with my 352 kHz \ 24 bit FLAC with no problems. The question is: what could be the difference between an Android smartphone running USB Audio Player Pro and pCP and a PC running Jriver or any other high-end multi k$$$ streamer? If bitperfect is bitperfect... there shuld be no difference at all (speaking about bitstream and not other features), or not? thanks. steff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66870 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108191 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BitPerfect
When I was student at the university, I designed and build a digital volume control by using a 8 bit DAC. It was a cheap Burr Brown chip and the idea was: since in the DAC there were a sort of resistors array properly scaled and powered by an external reference voltage, I replaced this one with the audio line signal. Of course the DAC was not clocked. Today one of my DAC ( Teac ) seems to use a very similar idea: the rotary volume control has 256 steps and the encoder controls the gain of the output drivers. I am not sure if decimating a digital signal is worst than using analog solutions, but a digital control can be designed even with an analogue approach. Some months later, during the final exam of digital electronics, we had to design and program all the above with a Xilinx, but we are talking about 1993, more or less Unfortunately I am no more into this stuff... so sorry having to deal with budget and economics :-( steff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66870 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108191 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Clear explanation. So both pCP and my little DAC (M2Tech) control volume in digital domain and so, if volume is less than 100%, no more bitperfect. Maybe several ways are available to control volume in digital domain, with different quality. Need to understand if it is better to let pCP to control volume or the DAC. For sure the other DAC I have ( Teac ) manage volume in analog domain, after the signal has been decoded. steff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66870 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108191 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Looking aroud, seems that letting the player modify the volume it is called "software volume control", while controlling the volume by tellig to do it to the DAC is called "hardware volume control". No, I just tried the stadard version, since the Audio Optimized one was not suggested for USB DAC This version contain all the same improvements as the above normal version. But in addition we have added all the audio related patches that Clive (aka JackOfAll) made for the raspberry kernel. So here we have support for more i2s-DACs and we support higher sample rates etc. **Please note: This version is only recommended for I2S soundcards and hardwired network. The optimizations for audio has been known to interfere with wifi, and for sure will make USB soundcards unstable. steff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66870 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107463 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Moreover, I tested several FLAC, from 44 to 384 kHz and... what make the difference is the bitrate and not just the sampling rate. Ler me explain: I have 384 kHz with 6 kbps VBR and with 11 kbps VBR... @ 6 kbps it is noisy but much more less noisy than @ 11 kbps For the CPU... let me say that it is not an issue: here my results: Running Raspbian + pure MPD, the results are always PERFECT, absolutely but the CPU usage rise 30% in some cases. Running Volumio (that is based on MPD) with no graphic interface it is perfect as above Adding the graphic interface to Volumio... it is TERRIBLE and the CPU goes very very high With piCorePlayer + Jivelite I experience noise, as told in this post, but the CPU is extremely LOW LOW LOW... never higher than 10% and the most consuming process is CIFSD responsible for mounting the SAMBA from the network. Why Rpi3 + Raspbian + MPD is always perfect even with a much more high CPU usage? Are there any tools or commands to check... let me say... interrupts, buffers and so on real time? steff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66870 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107463 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

More over, just made another test: the LCD board of the raspberry gets power from the raspberry main board. I powered the mainboard and the LCD with two separate power supplier ( 2.5 A each ), but no improvement. it is for sure something related to the LCD, but... having the LCD connected but Jivelite not installed (so, in the LCD you have just the kernel consolle) the sound is perfect. Installing Jivelite, but keeping it off, again is perfect. Enebling Jivelite... nightmare. it is not a problem of power, of network (same problem playing from USB memory), of the DAC, and so on... it a problem of the graphic interface & high res file (no problem @ 44 kHz) steff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66870 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107463 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

No, I do not see any lighting bolt when booting or during the normal use. in order to see this bolt, I have to switch to a low power old microUSB power supplier and connect it to the LCD board and not on the Rpi3 mainboard. I have a dozen of power suppliers, I tested all of them, no improvement. The one I am using right now is the official Raspberry 2.5 A. I plugged a digital sampling Fluke multimeter (a 600 $ unit) to see if I have any drops in the voltage, but... sorry... no drops at all (2ms sampling interval) steff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66870 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107463 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

I do not think to be part of this 5% I suppose there is "something" in the 3.20 that causes pops and cracks. I do not talk about overall sound quality, but sporadic noise that increases with incresing sample rate. Of course it is not dependent on hardware because, as I told, MPD does not suffers. I suppose that the LCD and touch interface makes some differences, since without is really better. Do not know if it helps: Volumio is build on MPD + some front end. Pure Volumio is as perfect as pure MPD, but adding the LCD\touch plugin... it is a nightmare for my hears ... really terrible. P.S.: I run everything on the same Rpi3, even the LMS. I understand, but since the very same Rpi3 work great with the official Raspian + MPD + the same USB DAC even to 384 kHz, I suppose that is something not dependent to the HW. Anyway the DAC is this: HiFace DAC by M2Tech http://www.m2tech.biz/it/hiface_dac.html I am listening right now and confirm that 3.11 is better that 3.20 and playing without the touch LCD is better than with the LCD. Moreover, since until 6 month ago I was running the "old" Rpi2, I can confirm that on the Rpi2 pCP is really better than pure MPD: I suppose that MPD cunsumes more CPU and the Rpi2 + MPD can not compete with PCP that is very very light. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce piCorePlayer 3.20
I am a newbie using pCP, but I am experiencing better sound quality with pCP 3.11 than 3.20 Lot of pops and cracks with 3.20, very few with 3.11, let me say with 3.11 almost zero if I avoid to use the touch LCD. Anyone some feedbacks on this matter? steff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66870 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107352 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
[SlimDevices: Unix] Newbie of pCorePlayer (coming from pure MPD)
It is my very first time here in this forum and I am quite new in playing with piCorePlayer. I am running a Raspberry + MPD since years; the flac files are stored on a NAS and the audio system is connected to the raspberry by a USB-DAC M2Tech. With some tweaks and a recent upgrade to pi3, I am playing even high resolution FLAC (up to 384 kHz and 24 bit) without any audible pops. All is perfect even pulling data from the NAS using the built in WiFi. I was looking for an improvement: avoid using the smartphone with app such as MPDroid to control the device. So I switched to Volumio, since it is based on MPD but can offer a built in support for the official rpi3 LCD and touch. Volumio was almost as perfect as my previuos pure-MPD setup, but whenever I use the LCD\touch... my God... it is a terrible experience. The CPU usage of the rpi3 gets higher due to Crmoium web browser used by Volumio to control the GUI. A lot of pops and glitches on high resolution FLAC. Then I started to look aroud for something different and I found piCorePlayer and... I am here. pCP is very interesting, very "light" and... once activated the touch LCD... WOW! It is GREAT! Unfortunately, after playing for some weeks, I am not able to find the "perfect" setup... I mean I am not able to get the same performances running the pure-MPD setup, maybe because of me or because of the pCP architecture, so I am going to asks some question. 1) since I am going to use the built in WiFi and an USB-DAC, should I use the standard pCP or the Audio Optimezed version? 2) Why I am getting better performances (less pops and cracks) using the 3.11 release versus the latest 3.20 ? 3) Why I am getting more pops and crackes with the touch LCD interface than without? 3) Why no audio at all playing files with resolution higher than 192 even if the DAC supports is (and with MPD I am able to play) ? The file of course il played by MPD 5) Is there the (maybe undocumented) possibility to play from memory? I mean to buffer the 100% of the file before playing it (for example JRiver offers this feature) Of course, the above problems occur even with the wired Ethernet and not only with WiFi Thanks for your help. steff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66870 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107369 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
