Rod Christ,

I think that's a smart move for now. MS hasn't cooked up their best upgrade
yet this time.

Dear Rod Christ,

I don't have Windows 11, but here is "How To Know Which Process Is Using a
File in Windows 11?" It uses Resource Manager natively, or something which
you can download called 'Handle'. With either one, you can kill the
processes you want to kill.

" Hello… I do wood projects that require I flip text so it can be placed on

I'm interested in doing the same thing. It shouldn't take hours or lots of
procedures to print something out so that it can be read through glass, for
instance.

Re: How to Make a Background Fit?

2023-08-21 Thread Linda Hull
Thank you Nancy, David, Robert,

It's a new day, and I was so tired last night.

I followed the directions in:
https://smallbusiness.chron.com/add-background-image-openoffice-document-63567.html

But I also changed in View > Print Layout or Web Layout. Web Layout has the
margins way outside and Print Layout doesn't.

I made yet another draft of the letter, saved as, and opened a new copy.
Changed from Print Layout to Web Layout, got my margins back, and followed
steps 1-4

https://smallbusiness.chron.com/add-background-image-openoffice-document-63567.html
Says:

4.

Click the “Browse” button, select your background image and click the
“Open” button.

[I get a preview of the image which isn't complete]

5. Select a graphic option in the “Type” section. The “Position” option
allows you to select a page position for the image, while the “Tile” option
will repeat the image throughout the page.

[The choices are 1. Position 2. Area 3. Tile. I don't remember clicking
'tile', maybe the cat did it... I changed it to 'area']

6. Click the “OK” button when you’re satisfied with the way your new
background image looks.

Now, I have a letter, on a beautiful background which has it's own gold
frame, on a page, with white margins all the way around!

It's closer, but still no banana.

I haven't ever used 'styles'. I'm very unfamiliar with the processes they
use. The final message in this thread does appear to accomplish my goal.

https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=108078

Thank you for your ongoing support as I learn more about Apache Open Office.

How to Make a Background Fit?

2023-08-18 Thread Linda Hull
 Dear Wonderful Open Office People,

I want to send a letter, either paper or electronically, with an
appropriate background image. I have Windows 10 and Open Office 4.1.13.

I found an image, cropped it, opening it in Open Office, I get one image in
the middle of the page and even though I specified Writer, it's in Draw, OR
I get 3 or 4 images in one, in Writer.

I only want one page. If it goes to page 2, then another one maybe. Or
possibly just the background without the frame and flowers.

I'm following the directions here:
https://smallbusiness.chron.com/add-background-image-openoffice-document-63567.html

How to Add a Background Image to an OpenOffice Document
by Jacob Michael

Jacob says to write the letter first. I decided to see if I could get the
background first, because the flowers might make it difficult to read the
text. Does having text on the page make a difference? - Answer The text
flows across all 3 background images.

* I can't see how to make the margins control the text in OO 4.1.13?

[Solved] Multiple pages on screen - From 2016
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=86060
I don't see what they are talking about at the bottom.

I should note that I tried reducing the size of the image once, but the
preview looked the same.

I now changed it from .png to .jpg - it opens in Draw not Word.

Years ago I experimented with plain colored backgrounds and that worked
fine. How do I get the background image to fit the page and see ONE page to
work on, in Writer 4.1.13?

Re: Open Office crashes immediately after it loads the pages.

2023-08-13 Thread Linda Hull
Robert,

Thank you. That helped a lot. I had looked in Roaming and didn't see it,
but maybe because it was all white. My File Manager is dark background.

I have renamed OpenOffice to OpenOffice.old and opened it, and it didn't
crash. I didn't have many settings, so I'm not going to stress over it.
I'll have to find the files I had open, but that's another issue.

Thank you for providing me with information relevant to Open Office. I love
to be able to ask questions and get information from this terrific,
supportive, mail list.

Open Office crashes immediately after it loads the pages.

2023-08-12 Thread Linda Hull
Open Office crashes immediately after it loads the pages.
I'm not 100% positive that this is only an Open Office problem. I'm running
Windows 10 and this is Open Office 4.1.13.

My desktop computer was refusing to load the Start menu, so I rebooted it.
It froze and didn't do anything for about 45 minutes. I hit the power
button and restarted it again. It restarted and ran updates. My friends
advised me to run a check and fix program. SFC whic is System File Checker
> sfc /scannow. It came up with a list of things that were wrong, but it
said it fixed everything. Then, when I tried to start Open Office, it
loaded fine and opened the pages and then crashed! It's done it over and
over.

I've heard two possiblities. One is a hardware problem, but the computer
seems fine and is running on an SSD.

The other is resetting the Open Office User profile. I had problems with
that. I don't think my computer matches the description in the directions.
Or maybe I just can't see it. (I'm a little bit visually impaired.) I
couldn't make this work:

https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74=99158
"Make sure you include the percent signs before and after.
%AppData%"

Isn't AppData the same in > This PC > Local Disk(C:) > Users > MyUser >
AppData > Local .. In Local, I have: OO Software > OO ShutUp10

I really do need OpenOffice for some important documents.

Help please?

Help Making Sense of .csv Files

2023-02-08 Thread Linda Hull
This isn't a usual "I can't do x or y" problem. It might be an OO doesn't
open it right? I would like it if someone could help me make these files
readable. Barring that, I need some specific doctors. The data seems to be
all spread out in these .csv files. They ought to be lists of doctors,
including specialities and other information, so that one could find a
doctor. When I open the file: Active Provider Directory 20220902 (59.27
MB), I get a page with huge spaces and nobody seems to have entered the
data correctly. Am I wrong?
I would like to be able to find doctors by different parameters, such as
specialty and location.
'Find' works. 'Find all' does not, for me. The file is on this page:
https://dch.georgia.gov/providers/provider-directory
From:

Flying Cat broke Open Office 4.1.13 Installation Wizard

2022-12-20 Thread Linda Hull
I have Windows 10 and Firefox 108.0.1 (64 bit.) I have my computer set not
to update for 7 days and the 7 days aren't up yet. I was planning to close
everything and reboot it, when I have time for that.

I was happily browsing and making notes. Suddenly the screen went black!
The computer restarted and informed me that it was performing updates,
don't turn off my computer. I let it do it's thing. I was just reopening
updated Open Office (but it wasn't showing any of my documents) when a
black and white cat jumped on top of the desktop box, and the screen went
black, again.

I got up and looked at the desktop. It seems the cat(s) had been using the
power plug as a step. It was partially unplugged. I plugged the power
plug back in and hit the power button.

Everything else looks fine, (Bless the notepad++ developer who just "1.
Fix empty session issue due to forced Windows update restart.) Except, I'm
getting an error from Open Office. It won't open!

Error:
[Open Office 4.1.13 Installation Wizard
Please exit OpenOffice 4.1.13 and the OpenOffice 4.1.13 Quickstarter before
you continue. If you are using a multi-user system, also make sure that no
other user has Open Office 4.1.13 open.]
[OK]

I looked up how to deal with this Error in the Forum.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Open the Task manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and kill all soffice.bin processes
that you can see. Then try to resume the installation.
Then, you can try to user profile.
If no change, try LibreOffice.

Re: [DISCUSS][PROPOSAL] "Dark Mode" Color Palette(s) for "Extras>Settings>OpenOffice>Appearance", declutter Menu

2022-12-04 Thread Linda Hull
Joana Ottenbacher,

I got your email, I imagine that everyone on this list got it also.

Your idea sounds great to me. If I had a choice everything would be dark
mode and there wouldn't be any conflicts or things that don't show. I will
tell you that at least for FireFox that doesn't seem possible and I end up
turning off my user styles and dark script a lot. That however, is just a
click or two.

I found a .pdf reader that does colored backgrounds. They say it is
impossible to change the font color of a .pdf. Also, some documents
override Okular's colors with white. Okular is part of KDE but they made
it as a standalone and it works on Windows.

New Edge browser has a 'Dark Mode' but it doesn't color Gmail, back to
black-on-white again. It would be nice if OO could do documents and
spreadsheets in white on black.

Thanks for the idea!

Calc Spreadsheet Questions

2022-11-06 Thread Linda Hull
I'm on Windows 10, Open Office 4.1.11.

I'd like to:

1. Make the cells and text in a Calc spreadsheet larger, easier to read.
2. Put data on a spreadsheet that appears in a Writer document. I send
simple letters, don't know page styles etc.

Are there directions somewhere or can someone explain the steps?

3. In the past, when I've saved and reopened a spreadsheet, the headings I
put in appear lower down. Is there a way to make them stay at the top?

Thanks so much!

Linda

your personal settings or your personal settings are locked.

2022-02-25 Thread Linda Hull
I just downloaded a new copy of Apache OpenOffice 4.1.11 from Sourceforge.

Can someone tell me what to do about this:
Either another instance of OpenOffice is accessing your personal settings
or your personal settings are locked.
Simultaneous access can lead to inconsistencies in your personal settings.
Before continuing you should make sure user 'Desktop-S7U3OHI/Lhull' closes
OpenOffice on host 'DESKTOP-S7U30HI'.
Do you really want to continue?

--- My previous instance of Windows 10 became corrupt due to a power
failure. Some of my stuff was able to be salvaged, but I don't think I have
a way to get my settings back, or do you know how to do that? We backed up
the drive but probably didn't restore the right file for OO.

I need help with an Open Office Writer task.

2020-12-05 Thread Linda Hull
I have Open Office 4.1.6 on Windows 10.

I opened an archive with 7Zip, and in it, I have several files. Each file
is a book of an Aramaic translation to English, of the Bible, having
several chapters. Each chapter has verses numbered 1. 2. 3. etc.

In order to use the files in an IRC Eggdrop bot, we need them to be 1:1.
1:2. 1:3. and so on, for each chapter, so 12:1. 12:2. 12:3. etc etc.

There are twenty-seven books in the New Testament of a standard Christian
King James Bible, and that is 260 chapters, about 7,958 verses (varies by
translation).

This is a formidable task. Is there a way to use OpenOffice to
automatically insert the correct Chapter numberings?

An example, showing a Chapter break:

28. Him whom we preach; and we teach and we educate every person in all
wisdom, to confirm every person as perfected in Yeshua The Messiah;
29. For in this I also labor and fight with the help of the power that is
given to me.

Colossians Chapter 2

1. But I want you to know what struggles I have for you and for those in
Laidiqia and for those others who have not seen my face in the flesh,

The material is not really .txt it is a series of Word documents.

I hope you can help?

Thanks a lot!

Background and Text in Writer

2019-03-08 Thread Linda Hull
I'm on Windows 7 and using Open Office 4.1.2.

I want to make an image with text I write, a nice background, with some
space the same color as the background, around the writing so it looks
professional.

So far, in OO Writer, I got the background, and my text, but the text runs
from margin to margin, and so does the color, but the margin areas are
white.
How can I get the text to be smaller than the colored area?

In the end I'll want to save it as a .pdf and convert it to a .jpg or .img
or copy it to Paint, for uploading to an image sharing site, that I can
link to for social media.

I've followed directions from:
https://smallbusiness.chron.com/add-background-image-openoffice-document-63567.html

I'd like to be able to use:

https://smallbusiness.chron.com/add-text-over-image-openoffice-53710.html
(Adjust the intensity)
The steps for this are based in
http://www.openoffice.org/documentation/manuals/oooauthors/Working_with_Graphics.pdf

It isn't up to date or doesn't match my Apache Open Office. My arrangement
for these steps is different. And the "View," "Toolbars" and "Picture"
toolbar doesn't show any numbers. (Could this be because the computer is
using a lot of ram for FireFox?) I'd really like to be able to lower the
intensity of an image to make the text stand out more, but I need the
directions to be for the Apache Open Office version that I'm using. Is
there a help page that is newer, please?

Thanks so much!

Linda

if you like something about a Template but not other parts, you can change
and customize, create to suit! And save it as yours.

Re: Text CSV won't open as a Spreadsheet

2017-10-06 Thread Linda Hull
I slept on it. Really really appreciate all of your help!

Tried opening a similar file that I had not processed in OpenOffice, it
opened as a .CSV in Calc.

I pasted the file from OpenOffice to notepad++ saved as filename.txt.
Opened in Calc with 'Text CSV (*.txt *.csv)', and it did open in Calc, but
all of my columns are 2.48", 2.96", 2.67", 2.27" - this is A: USER, B
usernames, C: ACCESS, D blank.. etc.
Why so wide? I'm guessing it picked up formatting from the OO.

I don't want to do this, will I need to fix each one manually?

It really should open as a CSV file, in appropriate width columns not what
it did, this time.

USER should be 0.54", usernames 1.03", ACCESS 0.74", etc, all a bit wider
than the text that opens in that column, empty columns .55" or something.

I have to process the file in OpenOffice, then I want to open it in Calc.
What format do I need to save the file in?

Re: Text CSV won't open as a Spreadsheet

2017-10-05 Thread Linda Hull
Brian,

I feel like I'm in Through-the-Looking-Glass Land.

You know I do this regularly to manage channel access lists for IRC. It's
just not working. I have NEVER had to modify the file name before. I
don't think I converted the files to .doc, Writer holds them as .odt.

What I have always been doing is: Look up the filename in 'open'. Open the
dropdown, "All files (*.*)", scroll down to where it says: "Text CSV (*.csv
*.txt)", click that and it should show me a "do you really want to open all
this stuff in a spreadsheet?" .. click yes. Get Calc.

ONLY IT'S NOT WORKING!

I'll be happy to send you any number of files privately, but I'm wondering
if something is bugged in my Apache OpenOffice?

I need it.

Text CSV won't open as a Spreadsheet

2017-10-05 Thread Linda Hull
I saved my file as filename.txt in Apache OpenOffice Writer.

Trying to open it as .csv in a spreadsheet, to work on it further.

I click Open, and insert filename.txt, and click on .txt CSV in the drop
down.

It keeps opening as Writer, not Calc.

Is this a bug or did I forget a step or what do I need to do?

I've tried opening a similar file.txt made in notepad++, it's still Writer
not Calc.
I believe this just started today, and that I opened similar files with
this technique yesterday.

Brian,

You said:
o Go to Edit | Find & Replace... (or Ctrl+F).
o Click More Options and tick "Regular expressions".
o Search for $ and Replace with a single space.
o Now search for USER: and replace with \n& .

When I put USER or CHANNEL in the 'Search for' box, and replace with \n&,
it's adding a space above the line where USER or CHANNEL occurs?

I want it to append the line with USER or CHANNEL to the line above. Did I
do this wrong?

How to connect lines in Writer?

2016-11-14 Thread Linda Hull
A while back, I asked some questions about opening a text file in Calc, as
text, CSV. I solved the CSV part of it, but I was using notepad++ on
Windows 7, to prepare the file.

I'm still on Windows 7 and have Open Office 4.1.2.

What I want to do is prepare the file using Open Office Writer, instead of
notepad++.

An example of the text is:

USER: nIckmenza ACCESS: 250 L
CHANNEL: #arlington AUTOMODE: OP
LAST SEEN: 0 days, 02:45:30 ago.
LAST MODIFIED: pomol Sir^POMOL!digi...@pomol.users.undernet.org 4087 days,
09:31:38 ago
USER: NaV1GaToR ACCESS: 250
CHANNEL: #arlington AUTOMODE: OP
LAST SEEN: 1572 days, 05:19:23 ago.
LAST MODIFIED: pomol Sir^POMOL!digi...@sirpomol.net 5181 days, 12:13:11 ago
USER: nite ACCESS: 100
CHANNEL: #arlington AUTOMODE: OP
LAST SEEN: 0 days, 22:15:01 ago.
LAST MODIFIED: monalisa2 Moniq!asila...@monalisa2.users.undernet.org 20
days, 16:34:36 ago
USER: okidoki ACCESS: 100 L
CHANNEL: #arlington AUTOMODE: OP
LAST SEEN: 0 days, 17:27:17 ago.
LAST MODIFIED: darxide dxd-!~d...@darxide.users.undernet.org 40 days,
07:29:15 ago
USER: pomol ACCESS: 500
CHANNEL: #arlington AUTOMODE: OP
LAST SEEN: 0 days, 12:34:17 ago.
LAST MODIFIED: bobskc BobsKC!bob...@bobskc.users.undernet.org 4240 days,
02:36:24 ago

What I want to do is make all of the data about each individual user be on
ONE line, so that it will open and appear all on a single line, in Calc.

In notepad++ I would \r\nCHANNEL Find and Replace to CHANNEL, which would
cause the CHANNEL lines to append themselves to the above line, and then
\r\nLAST would do the other lines which begin with LAST (losing the
MODIFIED and SEEN).

How can I do the same thing in Writer, to make the data for each user in a
single line?

Like:

USER: okidoki ACCESS: 100 L CHANNEL: #arlington AUTOMODE: OP LAST SEEN: 0
days, 17:27:17 ago. LAST MODIFIED: darxide dxd-!~
d...@darxide.users.undernet.org 40 days, 07:29:15 ago

I wouldn't mind knowing how to elimiate the colon ":" after USER: AUTOMODE:
SEEN: AND MODFIED: without eliminating the colons in all of the times? The
obvious way is Find and Replace each one R: E: N: and D:, is there a more
efficient way, maybe a regex for letters not numbers?

Thanks so much for your help!

Linda

Basic Calc/Spreadsheet Questions

2016-01-12 Thread Linda Hull
Is there a written Tutorial for making charts in AOO 4.1.2? I haven't found
much.

I want to make a pie chart.

I have a list of country names and numbers:
390 CA
337 GB
286 NL
234 DE
 51KR
 46RU
 44EG

Calc appears to handle the CA GB NL as second column of data, but doesn't
know how to assign them values.

I would like the chart to have a key that shows the colors of the segment
and has the Country Code beside it:

[purple] CA
[green] GB
[yellow] NL

Is there a way to rotate the pie, so that I can pick which segments are in
front? Can the colors be changed?

How do I get a title to appear in the Chart? One time it worked. The next
time each word in the title ended up with a color marker by it, like a key;
but I couldn't make it do that again.

Separately:
I've had problems keeping titles at the tops of spreadsheets. When
reopened, they often end up below the table.

I appreciate all your help.

Sincerely,

Linda

Re: Open Office 4

2015-12-20 Thread Linda Hull
Jim,

Thanks a lot! I have a cooler under the laptop, but it's not very
effective. I'll probably build one using real case fans and some wood. HP
also gives directions for cleaning the fans and remounting the cooler.
Would be nice to have a backup computer first.

In the meantime, I tried downloading Apache Open Office 4.1.2, from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/?source=typ_redirect

It has failed to download twice. I speak English, didn't bother with the
language packs, just clicked download. Must be my lucky day/bad internet?

Fwd: Open Office 4

2015-12-20 Thread Linda Hull
I have the same problem but it's not going away.

In Windows 7 and OpenOffice 4.1.1.

My laptop has been shutting itself down due to overheating. I want to open
my OpenOffice files, however - I've clicked on 'open office writer' - and
it gives me the Recovery screen, but it struggles to open things and
freezes. Then I've used Task Manager, and tried to open it again, three
times now, and it's still locking up, with the white screen.

Got ideas?

Change Read Only Document

2015-10-16 Thread Linda Hull
I got a form to fill out. It's a Word .doc. I have Apache Open Office
4.1.1. On Windows 7.

I've saved it as, but that doesn't change it from read-only, and I need to
fill it out.

Calc There is not enough space on the sheet..

2015-04-06 Thread Linda Hull
I'm trying to compare data between different access lists. I have managed
to create pretty nice spreadsheets with the CSV, but now Calc says that
There is not enough space on the sheet to insert here, when I try to
paste a second list.

I actually would like to do 4-5 lists, showing changes over time.

Taking out some of the data that I don't need so much, from both lists,
hasn't alleviated the problem.

What can I do?

This is Calc 4.1.1 on Windows 7.

CSV format Not Present in AOO 4.1.1?

2015-03-21 Thread Linda Hull
I want to open my data in Calc, but while it sees myfilename.txt It's not
offering me the CSV to open it as, and otherwise it wants to open it in
Writer, which is not what I want at all.

I cleaned a list of data, and added commas between sets of information, and
now I want to open it in Calc and sort it, making pretty spreadsheet.

Maybe I'm forgetting a step, or steps? I'm pretty tired but need to finish
this.

Grateful for your help!

Linda

Re: Please remove my info

2014-05-31 Thread Linda Hull
I'm quite interested to find out that there might be hidden data in my .doc
and other AOO pages, which can be read by anyone. How do we read this in
other documents? Not just by clicking a box, but to see what might be
there?

Re: Reminder on list policy

2014-01-08 Thread Linda Hull
In the 1980s and more in the 90s, Unix and Linux developers began the
'Developer Attitude' - We know it all and you are just too stupid to find
it out yet. Go read the (curse word) manual, you misbegotten worm!

Sadly, this attitude became the Cool thing to do, continuing in many Help
forums, Email, and on IRC.

We are only now, in the 21st Century, coming to realize that this attitude,
albeit in long-time practice by many, isn't such a good idea.

Users want reasonable attitudes from helpers.

There are more alternatives now than ever before. A person doesn't have to
take endless abuse to get (or give) help.

In fact, if helpers and forum managers will take the time to be pleasant
and listen, and reply decently to normal user's questions, they will be
rewarded with increased activity and usually more people using and enjoying
the product.

I mentioned IRC because the Irc.Freenode.Org #OpenOffice channel is often
empty of helpers and if anyone feels like answering a few question he or
she might be able to please a lot of people.

Thank you everyone for providing assistance to all users of Apache
OpenOffice.

Linda
