No the Del key itself doesn't seem to be the problem. Im using a laptop
so the keyboard is attached, and the key works fine with any other
program such as notepad, Thunderbird, even MS Works. Just with Writer
have I seen this problem. Would it be a problem with my version of OOffice?

with the usual action.
There is a Delete contents command in the Edit category of Tools

I installed OpenOffice two hours ago. Most applications install an icon on
the desk at the same time so that the user can easily launch the program.
But not OpenOffice. Most applications have a file with an icon and/or an
understandable name that makes it easy to create an icon on the desk.
