As some have mentioned, physical trials are compounded when they are accompanied by tragic losses of ones close to us. This summer was a bust for us because we lost a dear friend- my wife’s best friend for 15 years, who with her husband were our camping buddies. She was a Type-1 diabetic and at 55 all of a sudden she was gone from a heart attack. I made it to the river once when I was feeling up to it and got blown away by the wind, so fishing never really happened. Maybe next summer. I’d like to meister the ‘blizzard swap’, but I ‘m thinking work may be taking me to North Dakota soon and that means just surviving the winter. I’m glad it wasn’t this week, as they are expecting temps of -50°F down to -70°F possibly (real, not wind chill). I’ve been in -62°F (1978 Jackson Hole- real temp.)- that was cold enough for me. (FYI- Propane stops boiling at –43.6°F, so you could cut the top off a propane cylinder and look inside and see the propane liquid @ -44°F.) That’s cold. So if someone wants to step up and meister the swap, I’ll sign up with ice-dub, seal, and Yeti-hair caddis-fly nymphs. Hopefully there’s no more that 12 as that is a nice size swap. Hi Don, I'm still here, lurking all the day. My treadmill is my new fishing cabin. Bought it in Spring, was it redoing all summer till now - still a lot of work to do. Ok, not a real cabin. An old house, made from virgin stones. Build originally in 1830 - they say - , but there are no records from that time. It's located in a great and pictorial area of the Mosel (You might now, where the famous wine is grown.), Just outside the aerea where we get highwater every year. Less than 2 minutes walk to fish. A couple of consequences. 1. I have to decide, go fishing in the afternoon or go to a winemaker and check out his latest results. Well, often it is first fishing, and than sit down and drink. 2. I have now 2 tying rooms. Need to divide my material 3. Need more rods to build. Next is a Streamer rod, planning a 2 hand rod 4. Need to learn, how to cast a 2 hand rod 5. Still exploring the hot spots to fish. 6. Must ty more streamer if you like: http://hatzenport.de/ In German, but some nice pictures from this autumn. Hatzenport is the name of the little village. Hi DonO, I'm still here, just lurking. I've been busy with work for several months with a lot of time away. Had a nice couple weeks of to fish for Stripers. Now hoping to spend more time working near home so I can tie flies and train hard for my black belt grading/test which starts in February. I like the idea of a swap. Still having Kidney problems with 25% function. Third replacement on the right knee did not work out and back surgery again is out of the question. Had surgery for Reflux that worked a while but something stretched and am back where I was before the surgery. Had another light stroke two weeks ago. I refuse to go back into the hospital. Needless to say I am getting discouraged. Can't drive, do good to walk and no fishing. As for tying, I have so many Promised Flies that I don't know if I can get caught up. I had to back out of the last Swap but thanks to Don, a set of flies got in for me. I think I had two others that offered to tie a set of flies for me, I don't remember who but thanks to them too. I will have to pass on this swap for fear that I would again have to back out at the last minuet. Good to see some activity back on the list. I miss not seeing any posts. I will probably regret sending this. I am still here. Like many others been having health issues. If the swap is after Christmas and a smaller number, I would be interested. I do have ice-dub and polar bear. it would be good to tye again. My back prevents me from sitting for very long, longer walks. So wading fishing from a boat are out for me. VFB List: A big howdy to all those remaining on the list. How many are IOFF’ers? My thoughts are with all that replied who are going through physical trials. As some have mentioned, physical trials are compounded when they are accompanied by tragic losses of ones close to us. This summer was a bust for us because we lost a dear friend- my wife’s best friend for 15 years, who with her husband were our camping buddies. She was a Type-1 diabetic and at 55 all of a sudden she was gone from a heart attack. I made it to the river once when I was feeling up to it and got blown away by the wind, so fishing never really happened. Maybe next summer. I’d like to meister the ‘blizzard swap’, but I ‘m thinking work may be taking me to North Dakota soon and that means just surviving the winter. I’m glad it wasn’t this week, as they are expecting temps of -50°F down to -70°F possibly (real, not wind chill). I’ve been in -62°F (1978 Jackson Hole- real temp.)- that was cold enough for me. (FYI- Propane stops boiling at –43.6°F, so you could cut the top off a propane cylinder and look inside and see the propane liquid @ -44°F.) That’s cold. So if someone wants to step up and meister the swap, I’ll sign up with ice-dub, seal, and Yeti-hair caddis-fly nymphs. Hopefully there’s no more that 12 as that is a nice size swap. I read every post and am on line several times per day. Am being a good boy and getting all my treatments minding my Dr's. I do feel good. I do not post much but I do enjoy the list. We might get a few flakes of the white stuff tonight. What little we got over Thanksgiving all melted off so the ground at my elevation is bare. Do have a goodly amount at elevations. Wishing everyone a safe December. I'm keeping busy building a few Quads and am enjoying the heck out of my time spent daily in the shop. I manage a few flies now and then. My tying set up is right here in the front room and seldom gets straightened out. I do not mind the mess and as there is no Mrs to complain and the dog does not mind either. I manage to keep a hook in one of the two vises at all times just in case I get the urge to create something. Off insulin now (un-officially) and my BG readings are still all normal. Exercise and diet have been the key for me. Up to a mile on the treadmill now- walking, jogging, and wind-sprinting up to 6 mph so far with incline. Two months ago a 5 min. 2 mph level walk pooped me out. My BP is now normal after the workout and after the cool-down. Have lost 45 pounds so far (less of me to love). Who-hoo! Anyone interested in fly swaps now that winter is here? I am still here. I am still working at BYU Hawaii in Laie, HI. But next year probably end of May will retire. We bought a home in Utah and will move back. I hope I can re-acclimate to the cold after all this time. We want to be back around family. I am okay on health for now. Hope to see some of you at least after moving back. Maybe a VFB conclave on the Green River? I need an excuse to tie so I would join the swap. I have no polar bear but could sub something (snowshoe or arctic fox). I have plenty of ice dubbing. I'm still here. Have a cranial mass lesion in left occipital lobe, 6.5mm, aka brain tumor. still doing the every 6 weeks MRI with contrast and perfusion routine. As long as it doesn't grow, all is well; if it does grow, I'll be in the operating room for cranial neurosurgery within a week (or so they say). So other than that, life is good. Tie on the weekends when not working. I'm game for a swap if 12 or fewer flies, and if no PB is needed. I have some Ice Dub and could tie up some Josh's White Lightnings nymphs in either purple or orange (prefer purple - caught a 13-14 brookie and an 18 rainbow on it this pattern this late september / early october). Let me know when due, how many flies, and where to send. I'm still here, waiting for my bone graft to complete. We have my mothers affairs taken care of, we just have to pick several local families to sponsor for Christmas. That will be a annual affair, early on when I was pre school we were the sponsored family, so this is pay back time. The younger of the seven of us doesn't seem to remember those day's but the 4 oldest do, so we made it the family mission. There was a little more than we expected so we decided we were all doing pretty good and to help someone else for a change. I want 2014 to be a better year, we each lost our remaining parent and several close friend, some younger than we are, so we are retiring in 2014, partial May 17 and complete August 24! Then we can travel the country in search of trout in our camper for several years. I am up for a swap this winter. And Don you are a prime example of how to treat diabetes, exercise and diet, it is the one disease that medication alone can't take care of.
